My android updated and now my texting sucks

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 06:11 PM PDT

So I am not a tech guy in any way shape or form. I own a galaxy s8. About 4 days ago my phone force updated. All my icons changed shape and stuff but what my only real issue is my texting.

Message conversatiobs take around 8 seconds to load which is just annoying. Also very oddly my phone sends thumbs up messages to my SO and notifies me that the message was sent seemingly randomly. I will send a "okay sounds good" text message, put my phone down, and 30 seconds later I get a notification I sent a thumbs up emoji.

I just want my texting back to normal. Any help for a guy totally annoyed and just wanting normal text messaging back?

Other than doing a factory reset, is there any way to find & remove adware/virus from my kids' phones?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 06:42 PM PDT

My sons both are getting full-screen popup ads on their phone at random times - sometimes while just hitting home. They also have reported that youtube will occasionally minimize to window on its own.

    Phones:

    • Moto G5 Plus

    • Moto G6 Play

Running stock launcher on both. Had them go through and uninstall anything new. I don't see anything that screams risky, and I have looked at running services and nothing looks strange.

I have been scouring Android-related subreddits and the consensus seems to be that antivirus and cleaner apps are scams. Is there anything I can do, or should I just reset these phones to factory?

    No notifications for mail apps

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 06:50 PM PDT

    Galaxy S8+ on Android 8.0.0

    Hello,

When Google Inbox was shut down today, I switched to Gmail but I haven't received any notifications despite all the options being checked in the app and in the notification settings. All other notifications appear to be working correctly (no battery saver or do not disturb)

I disabled Gmail and switched to BlueMail (which I really like!), but am having the same problem: no notifications. I enabled ALL notifications on the device, and they all appear to work except these mail apps. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

After a recent update, If I delete the local copy, the uploaded one disappears from online photos although the deleted once was synced!!!

Am I doing anything wrong? new app flow?

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Note: I'm using Android 9.

Status of iTunes sync on Android?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 05:24 PM PDT

Hey guys, im looking at jumping over to android from an iPhone in the next few weeks. I have been looking at getting android for a few years now...The only thing holding me back is the way i've curated my iTunes library on my PC

What's the best tool right now to allow me to:

    - sync iTunes music including;
    - smart-playlists
    - song ratings
    - playlist folders

I want the exact same music experience on Android as i get with iPhone. I want playcounts from my phone to update in iTunes when i sync back, playlist changes made on my phone to update in iTunes etc.

Am i out of luck here?

    Android, long press.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 09:32 AM PDT

Hi, I have recently bought my grandmother an Android flip phone (physical keys and a touchscreen) so we can video call her. I've made it as simple as possible but she's having some problems with the long press. She tends to hold her finger down on both the screen or the physical "okay" button too long, which brings up different functionality. I've tried teaching her to press quickly, but she isn't managing it. Is there anyway I can disable this?

    Thanks in advance.

Is there a way I can limit the maximum number of tabs I can have open, either in Chrome, with and app, or in another browser? Moto G6, unlocked, on Android 8.0.0.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 02:35 PM PDT

I just closed 548 tabs. I closed them all because there were too many for me to reliably be able to trim them down where they didn't slow down switching between tabs. I clearly won't limit the number of tabs I use on my own, so is there a way for me to force a limit?

P.S. What flair would be best for this post?

I'm on an s8 with latest software. It's very tricky to Google so I've come here. Any ideas why?

Persistent notification: "Mobile data disabled - touch to enable". How do I get rid of it?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 05:38 PM PDT

Since Friday (Mar 29), my phone has been showing a notification from Android System that says "Mobile data disabled - touch to enable".

I'm finding it rather unhelpful considering, you know, I disabled it on purpose.

    https://i.imgur.com/YIGJbOk.png

    https://i.imgur.com/lMIIVJo.png

I can't swipe the notification away, nor can I block it. I've rebooted several times, of course, and if I take out the SIM card then it doesn't show up. I have always had data turned off and have not made any changes to my phone or my carrier.

If I turn data on and back off, then I get a second persistent notification from Call Services "Mobile data turned off - tap to see mobile data settings". This one goes away when I reboot.

Although I have the data limit set as low as it can go, 1 MB, the OS seems to have slipped 4 MB past me somehow.

    Carrier: AT&T

I haven't contacted ATT about it yet because 1) I'm expecting reddit will be better at technical help and 2) the notification is coming from Android System so I'm primarily looking at the OS here. Even if ATT is initiating the message I expect Android to let me ignore it.

Please tell me it's not an April Fools joke or worse, a punishment for not paying for data. Any suggestions?

Screen Lock Pin changed without permission. Can't unlock.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:59 PM PDT

My wife's phone is secure by a pin number. It is a Galaxy S9. She went to charge it after dying and it is asking her for a PIN. She puts in her PIN and says it is wrong. We went to the Find My Mobile for Samsung and it lists the phone but says registration isn't complete. She only has 3 attempts left until it formats itself. We can't lose pictures and data. Any thoughts?

We have her passwords. Tried calling it and answering and using the pull down menu but cannot do anything, obviously.

    Please help.

Problems with the S9+ sound (game mode?) and phone calls ending.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:43 PM PDT

When I am on the game (castle clash) I have to pull the top (slider/bar(setting thing) down to be able to change the in-game sound using the buttons on the side.

With literally everything else including other games and with YouTube I dont have this problem so not sure why this is happening. Have I set something up specifically by accident to with "game mode" or is it something else? I know initially I did do a few things here but update has changed the layout and pretty sure all I did was mute notifications when in-game.

Also before I used ot have problem where the phone call would randomly end, I think that was to do with me accidentally pressing the fingerprint sensor which turned phone calls off?

Now I think phone calls are dropping just cuase I have bad signal sometimes or is it soemthing else?

    Thanks

I need to unlock my 1st Generation Samsung Galaxy Note.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:52 AM PDT

I am sorry if this is not the right place to post this.

I currently own the first model of the Samsung Galaxy Note (GT N7000). This phone was the first phone I ever owned, and was a gift to me from my mother back in 2012. About mid-2013 my family broke apart and I was made homeless, which lasted almost 2 years. During that period, My Samsung stopped charging completely and became a brick, essentially. I refused to get rid of it hoping that one day I could have it repaired. Well, 6 years later, I haven't had It repaired, but decided to purchase the exact same phone, and use that as a battery charger for the broken one.

The issue I face now is that it has been too long. I no longer remember the pattern I had set for it. I have tried many different patterns with no success, but I am still trying. The other option I have is to use a google account. The issue here is that even when I try, no matter what it will just say "Invalid Username/Password". I cannot see as little as a notification, so I am unsure if I am using the right account or how I could even check.

This phone contains the last remaining photos from my entire childhood. Without this phone, I have nothing else to look back on. I do not want to erase a decade and a half of my life.

    (Possibly?) important points:

    • The device is not rooted
    • I believe the device is still running Android 2.3 "Gingerbread"
    • I can not connect to a PC (reason stated above)

Please, any suggestions would be much appreciated. Sorry for my English.

Voice-to-text on Android: Some questions! Do these words work for you? Is it my accent? Is there a fix? [voice file of me included]

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:10 PM PDT

I use voice-to-text extensively because it's faster generally than swiping text, and it saves my hands somewhat since I spend all day typing and have some issues with arthritis due to an accident as a teenager. Mostly it works well. However, I have some common misrecognized words, so my questions are:

    1. Are these words (given below) transcribed correctly for you, if you're a native speaker of English?
    2. If not, do you have a workaround or pronunciation that works?
    3. Is there some technical solution, for example one in which I read a text to my Android assistant and it remembers how I pronounced "comma"? I checked the settings but all I can find for my phone is a re-recording of "OK Google" and "Hey Google".

One potential problem: English is not my native language but it's good enough that people rarely notice and I give academic talks in English regularly. My accent is minimal, but my biggest giveaway is probably a different rhythm in my speech.

The two words I most commonly struggle with:

    • "comma" is transcribed as "call mom" (maybe I over-enunciate where the word should be more condensed by a native speaker?)

    • "lol" is transcribed as "lowell" (I always assumed this was simply a "not a real word" issue, but two days ago it transcribed it as "LOL" once, so perhaps the problem is me, again?)

Here is an audio file of me saying these words.

    Managing android devices

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 09:23 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

In the past there was "Google play for education " that let you manage a group of tablets/android devices. Since this is no longer available what is the next best option? I'm looking for a free mdm? Software in order to manage and lockdown tablets for use in a class.

Is the gapps mdm the replacement for Google play for education or is there something else you'd recommend?thanks!

Do battery calibration apps work or do they harm the battery and phone?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 12:32 PM PDT

I have an s9 I bought used. I notice I will charge it up to 100 and within the first minute of using it it will immediately drop to 99. The battery life isn't great but I'm wondering if calibrating the battery with one of those apps can help?

I wanted to make an edit: the last 10 percent of my battery goes very quickly even with power saving mode on.

How do I renew and refresh my old android phone so that it doesn't constantly hang?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 01:43 PM PDT

I looked through the faq/wiki but didn't see much related to this. Here's the situation:

I've got a Google Pixel. It worked great when I got it and for some time afterwards. Eventually it started slowing down considerably. I get message windows popping up in the middle of dealing with email saying things like "System UI not responding" which gives options of closing, waiting, or reporting. These are newer, before it would usually tell me the app I was in wasn't responding. The problem is at its worst when I'm using the keyboard. It will get hung up for 4-5 seconds while typing and then often the keyboard goes away and I'll have to bring it back up to resume typing (this is the most infuriating part, I could deal with lag and slowness in other areas, but it takes me like a minute or two to type a 15 word response)

I'm looking for the best way to completely renew my device on the software side. Is there anything like defragging that is an option? Factory reset? Anything that could help?

Notes on my phone use and setup:

    • Android version 8.1.0 (yes I know I'm behind and that's bad security wise, but I'm reluctant to move to 9 due to slowness issues I already have)

    • I don't have a lot of apps. No facebook, no most things that would put a lot of drain on your device. Probably around 10-15 apps beyond what the phone came with.

    • I rarely have wifi/location/bluetooth enabled.

    • Hard drive is a little full. I'm considering deleting all of my music to see if it helps the performance. Has anyone had any success with clearing up hard drive space to speed up performance?

Alarm clock not playing on internal speaker with aux cable plugged in. Samsung Galazy S8

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:49 AM PDT

As of this week my alarm has stopped playing over the internal (built-in) speaker while an aux cable is plugged in.

I usually plug my Galaxy S8 into an iHome when I go to sleep to play music which is on a sleep timer. And the next morning my phone would play the alarm using it's built in speaker, so even though the iHome had turned off my alarm would still sound.

As of this week, it stopped doing that. I checked and my phone hasn't had an update installed this past weekend. I thought maybe it was the Samsung clock app, but I installed the Google clock app and it's still playing the alarm only through the aux cable when it's plugged in. As soon as I unplug it it's fine. This was never an issue before and I don't recall changing a setting with regards to this.

Any ideas? Is there a setting that I'm not aware of, or was there an update to something that went unnoticed, like a security type update?

[rant] Do you see any value in updating these apps? They don't seem to add any good value, but take off existing apps good features and turn it to shit?

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 08:29 PM PDT

    • facebook
    • Instagram
    • WhatsApp
    • Messenger (facebook's)
    • Pinterest
    • Google app
    • Youtube
    • Maps
    • Linkedin
    • Shazam
    • Twitter
    • Uber
    • Skype

All these apps have a biweekly (i think) updates and it adds nothing of value, turns apps a little more sluggish. Moves around a useful feature, to un labelled menus place where end goal is "spend time in my app"

( OnePlus3T, very capable device, where maps is Shit)

Which begs the question why should i auto-update these apps? And others that provide no useful update information.

Good play store gone after update

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 08:23 PM PDT

I cannot use the YouTube app because it says my device does not have nor support Google play store which makes no sense.

I tried all the fixes online to my knowledge. Won't let me force stop on Google play services, but apparently Google play store does not exist on my phone.

Would hate to factory reset since I have a lot of save data on some games.

[myth or true] If you download and delete apps, phone will slower

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:47 AM PDT

I often hear this threat. When you download and delete apps repeatedly, your phone will be slower and the apps are not entirely deleted, there's still some hidden data and will consume your battery/storage/memory. Is this true?

No internet on my Android Device.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 07:19 PM PDT

Hi I have a Blackberry Priv phone that suddenly stopped connecting to the internet. I do see notifications and can check and send what's app messages but I can't search anything on google, play games or anything like that.

I've tried airplane mode, reconnecting to wireless and cell provider, removing tons of apps, booster and a full factory reset but that didn't work either. What's weird is sometimes if I keep trying it'll let me search something on google and if I keep searching things then I'll have connection back and can play games but the next day the connection will be gone again.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Issue with Pie update on S8 (ATT), bluetooth keeps disconnecting from car.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 11:47 AM PDT

I've been having nothing but issues since my phone updated to Pie a couple of days ago. My phone is unable to keep a steady connection with my car (2018 Jag XE). The bluetooth connection keeps disconnecting in the middle of the song or in the middle of a phone call, but the call and song keep playing on the phone. After disconnecting the car will reconnect with my phone. Anyone else having these issues?
