Are kernel updates necessary if everything works fine? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 09:20 AM PDT Some background, I'm using KDE Neon User Edition 5.15 (based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS) at the moment. The kernel is 4.15.0-47-generic. My laptop has a 5th gen i3 processor and integrated graphics, no other new or special hardware. Everything seems to be working perfectly fine. Are there any benefits to or reasons for upgrading to a newer kernel like 4.19 or even 5.0? Thanks. [link] [comments] |

WPS Office from original soruce or from Cyrille P. ? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 01:47 PM PDT I have installed Ubuntu and I want to install WPS Office. However, WPS is a chinese software and some claim that it's not safe to have it with internet connection. So, when I type on the Ubuntu app store, there are two options: 1rst - WPS from original source (HoLuLuLu) [wtf is holululu?]; 2nd - WPS from "Cyrille P.", which he claims to be modified for not getting internet connection. Is the version from "Cyrille P." safe? Can somebody help me? [link] [comments] |
Using Wine with malicious Windows program Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:44 PM PDT If I have Wine on my system and I download a malicious .exe file and install it would my system be compromised at all? I would assume not but I was curious. Edit: I've never used Wine before so for all I know what I said may not make sense [link] [comments] |

How can I interface with an oldschool (VT100) style terminal? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 08:45 AM PDT So I came across a listing for a pretty cheap VT100 terminal and I really want to install it in my server room for those rare times when I don't feel like SSH'ing. How do they work? I'm assuming I'll need to throw in an add-on card into my servers in order for them to communicate, but I'm really not sure how it all fits together. For some strange reason, any info I find online is how to control a 60s-80s era mainframe, not a modern hardware server. [link] [comments] |
Dual booting Ubuntu with Windows on Intel RST Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:13 AM PDT Hello all, I have two SSDs in my laptop (both 512GB). I am using the RAID settings in my BIOS to create a single 1TB storage. The BIOS calls this option as Intel RST Premium. I have 2 partitions on this 1TB storage. 700GB for Windows and 300GB for Ubuntu. I was able to install Windows in the 700GB partition. When I plug in the Ubuntu pendrive and start the installation procedure, it does not recognize the my storage at all. It only has the pendrive mounted and not the RAID storage I have created. Can anyone help me out with this? I am not sure if I am following the installation procedure right. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Which process would I follow dual booting Linux from just part of a brand new drive? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:02 AM PDT I currently run Windows 10, and I'd like to maintain my current Windows install while adding Linux. Since I'd like to get a new SSD anyway, the plan would be to put the SSD in, install Linux on a partition of it, and then have the rest of the drive be accessible for use as a Steam library on both Linux and Windows What would I do after plugging the drive in to make that happen? Linux Mint performing really slow on games Posted: 03 Apr 2019 10:20 AM PDT Hello, I've been interested in moving to Linux for a while now and I decided yesterday to take that step, so I downloaded Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.1. However I have a little problem. Games are really slow, but like **really slow**. I've been mainly playing Rocket League and Slime Rancher and, when I ran them on Windows, I just played them at ~60fps with the best graphical settings. After moving to Linux, I can barely hit 30fps with the worst graphical settings and by making the window resolution smaller and just have a few fps with settings similar than the ones I had on Windows. Am I doing something bad? Thank you for your help. (I have a Geforce GTX 1050 and an i7-7700HQ and I don't run my games through Wine) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2019 09:49 AM PDT Hey, I collect used laptops, I have a bunch of them. One I want to use as a media server for my own ripped DVDs. I've tried to set one up with Plex. (A gateway with 500GB HD) The OS is LXLE, and the plex and the media are on the same HD (the whole usb external drive thing with linux and plex is another story) Most of it works, the server sees the flies, all good. But, my Fire TV sick can't connect to the server. Not sure why. Is it the Linux version of the server? Just don't know. Tried it on a laptop with Windows 7, everything worked fine (it didn't work with Windows 10) I'd rather not use any windows. Not sure where to start to solve the problem with the plex on Linux. Tried Kodi Upnp too, didn't work. Emby didn't work either. Any help is appreciated, I am an idiot. :-) Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Apr 2019 07:30 PM PDT Hey guys! From my title, I just want to know the comparison between the two and maybe which one falls better in the end(?). I already saw some posts about it on this sub as well, but I don't really know if the answers were satisfying enough for me. Plus, that post was a really long time ago. Well, I just want to know some insights from the experienced ones on which one would be the BEST for beginners like me. I just started diving into linux and I have both Ubuntu and Linux Mint ready for installation, I just don't know which one to pick yet. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2019 05:57 AM PDT Hello guys! I'm dual booting Windows 8 and Xubuntu 18.04 for my Robotics class, and i keep having random freezes and having to force shut down. I read about running out of memory, I kept monitoring with Task Manager and RAM was always around 28% when it freezed. The only programs I've installed are ROS (for my class) and Skype, but it freezes with both turned off. Any suggestions for what is the cause? Ubuntu 18.04: Why didn't the system time change automatically for daylights saving? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 05:37 AM PDT I'm normally used to seeing the system clock (Windows) change it's time (plus or minus an hour) for Daylights savings. It even tells me in advance or even after the fact that the clock has been shifted an hour or so. However, that didn't happen on Ubuntu (I'm new to it). Not only that it didn't change, it seems like the system is completely unaware that that's even a thing. Any solutions? Suggestions? [link] [comments] |
