The Best Laptop for Travel/Business/Media: A review of the Matebook X Pro Posted: 03 Apr 2019 09:14 AM PDT So I haven't written a review in a long while. Before this I had owned a 2017 15" Macbook Pro with the highest specs. When deciding I had also tried a Dell XPS 15" which was a great machine but wasn't there just yet. I was on a 3 week trip to India and destroyed my $3k Macbook Pro thanks to a Gin and Tonic. Needing a new machine I set out to find the perfect machine for the daily driver. I'm a pilot and travel the world for work. I'm currently sitting in Cabo, MX at a coffee shop nailing out some invoices and online training. This year alone I'll be spending two weeks in South France, Two weeks in England, and a month in Africa with a stop in Spain and Egypt getting there. I move. I also consider myself the daily user which is one thing almost EVERY SINGLE REVIEW seems to forget. Everyone that does reviews is naturally into media so always talk about it's media capabilities which leaves 90% of us looking for the wrong reasons. So I wanted to write my review of the machine I settled on. The Huawei Matebook X Pro (Base model!). As far as I can tell a review of this unit is so hard to find. After flipping my Gin and Tonic on my $3k Macbook Pro I manged to sell it online for $640 (broken) and found the Matebook X Pro on newegg open box for $800 with free shipping and no tax. Figured I'd try it out and if I didn't like it I'd sent it right back... You'll have to either pry this out of my dead hands or give me something stronger than a Gin and Tonic as they keyboard is spill resistant! Firstly the specs on the base model are a low power Intel i5 8250U with 4cores/8threads, 256GB nVME SSD, and 8GB memory. Nothing to wow anyone... yet somehow it does. For reference my home system has a GTX 1080ti and 32GB memory and my gaming laptop has a RTX 2070 desktop level card in it. I'm not afraid to spend for what I want. This isn't a review about best value but simply the best for what is needed. I can't help it I found that for $800.00. Icing on the cake. The model was base which has never been me. I use computers for everything but outside of gaming there really wasn't anything overly demanding. I bought the machine. Hopped on ebay and bought CD keys for M$ Office for $10, installed utorrent, popcorn time, VLC media player, Chrome and away I went. The computer physically is a sight to be hold. What a beautiful design with a premium build quality you'd only expect from Apple. The screen has it's thin bezels, is absolutely gorgeous, and has touch, which I never use. The resolution is 3000x2000@60hz and looks so incredibly sharp. Better than my Macbook Pro. The keyboard keys are slightly wider than I was normally use to but after 60seconds of use I'm flying over them with no problem. They have excellent key travel, a great tactile feel, and remind you of the premium build quality. The trackpad is large, the perfect size for the machine, and works just like a Macbooks. It does allow you to press when I never do as I was use to the Mac. It does have the precision drivers and it doesn't leave me wanting for anything. To the sides of the keyboard are the speakers and these are fantastic for their size. Part of the reason I paid the Mac premium was because I wanted the build quality, trackpad, screen, and speakers. This machine gives me all of those things in Aces. Remember I'm stuck on the road a lot. I wanted something great for media consumption. I have subscriptions to all the services and use them endlessly. This machine is great for that. Next is the performance. All I can really say is it does it's job exceptionally well. When I open the lid I'm looking at the Windows login within seconds. The fingerprint sensor is faster than my Macbook Pro's and instantly I'm looking at the desktop. The CPU is 4 core and gives plenty of power for anything the average user would need. We all have the stigma that we are not AVERAGE and AVERAGE is bad... Run off with that noise. Unless you're editing 4k footage this machine will handle absolutely everything you need. It's not for gaming, I have a gaming rig for that, but it is for everything else. It includes a great USB-C adapter that lets you plug in media cards. It has thunderbolt three on the side. If you want to make this your only machine, get you the Gigabyte Gaming Box GTX 1070 (or 1060) and enjoy a compact machine that's exceptionally powerful at that point. Using adobe Lightroom or DXO Photolab 2 with 24MB raw files from my Sony A6500 is a nonevent. I'm about quality not quantity so I'm not putting 10,000 photos in for work, however. So for me it's about overall user experience. Don't forget that the newer version of intel CPUs, one of the reason I jumped for this machine, is the hardware decoding of H264 and other codecs so video playback no longer makes your machine feel like it's about to melt. This means much less power consumption, better battery life, and smooth playback. As far as media consumption goes this machine is as close to perfect as I've experienced to date. Before this I'd have picked a previous 13" Macbook Pro. The screen, the speakers, and it's lap-ability when chilling in bed make it the best I've had. I don't like tablets and sooner or later you get tired of holding them and they slide around. The bluetooth connects to my Sony noise canceling headsets if I'm wanting my "theater experience". Color reproduction is great, blacks are very black, so impressed. If you're looking for a business laptop lets talk about what really matters; portability and usability. I've never encountered a machine that offered as much. Yes I have tried the thinkpad carbon X1. The screen on the Matebook X Pro is better and don't even get me started on the speakers. 8GB of memory might leave most thinking they need more, I have 32GB in both my desktop and gaming laptop, I guess I bought the hype. I do like having that peace of mind so was worried of that. I guess Windows had made so many advancements and optimizations that memory leaks and excessive usage are no longer a problem. I currently have around 25 chrome tabs open and going strong (I have 21 hrs of annual powerpoints I have to go through for training so my trick is to open them all then swap through quickly hitting the next button lol). Anyway whether it's documents or excel sheets this system handles them all perfectly fine. I'll admit I have opened a few large PDFs that might take a second longer to load than if on my power system. That's about the only time I've ever noticed anything and I wouldn't call it slow by any means. You can grab this machine, leave the charger at home (or hotel room as I have) carry it in one hand or in a small bag with zero problems, and still have an enjoyable user experience knocking out your workload. The battery last, I don't even know, but yesterday I streamed 6 episodes of Luther (awesome crime thriller) and did it all on one charge without running out. What's even more amazing is that USB-C can support up-to 100w of power delivery but this ships with a very small 45W charger. Roughly twice the size of an Iphone charger. Plug it in and it charges exceptionally quick even if you're using it. When it comes to traveling you couldn't ask for better as the build quality is as good as it gets so far, it's form factor means you can put in just about anything. When standing in line at an airport you can put this device in the bin sideways (meaning I can put another electronic device like my tablet in the same bin). This is something no one has considered but it's a HUGE benefit as I can get everything through security using two instead of three bins. I have two hands, I can carry two bins, so dropping a bin made life SO MUCH EASIER. Due to it's compact size it also workss well on an economy seat-back tray so long as you are not in the furthest back seats (last 10 rows or so) where they seats are more cramped. Most people don't know this but an airplane flies more efficient with a further aft CG (Center of Gravity). The wings are a pivot point like a see-saw and the tail pushes down. To do so it has to manipulate more of the air (increases drag) to push down. By shifting the CG (IE more weight) aft the tail doesn't have to work as hard so the plane flies much more efficient. That's why first class (the furthest spread apart) is up front followed by premium economy then economy. Economy starts off standard but the last several rows are actually slightly closer together and the seats actually smaller. Even though they are all labeled the same class (economy) the last series of rows get smaller to deal with the fuselage tapering smaller and to put the most weight in the back of the plane to lower their fuel burn and increase their efficiency. So when picking a seat always pick as far forward in Economy possible. Anyway so if in the last few rows the machine might be up against your chest but in the rest it's great. I love loading up movies and shows and plowing through them while commuting to an aircraft. This truly is the best business/travel/media consumption machine I've ever seen and I've at least tried all the recommended ones. Again I'm not afraid to spend for what I want. This ended up being what I wanted. There is a higher end version that comes with the MX150 and soon to be MX250 and the i7 with 16GB of memory. Be your own person and decide if you need that. If you want to video edit than get it. If you don't want to video edit then don't and enjoy the better battery life. You don't need the 8GB extra for the daily driver. You'll never notice it. Doubt you'd even see much difference between the i5 and i7 as the only difference is hype threading which is application specific. Don't get this machine to play games with. It's not a toy. Get it because you're a professional that wants professional quality and a professional user experience. The only real downside to this machine that people point out to me is still a plus side. The web cam is placed in the middle of the keyboard just over the number 7 key. I don't know about you guys but I've used a webcam twice and both were for pilot interviews. Even then I'd rather just set my iphone up in the proper place and go from there. I like being able to sit back at a distance and keep my notebook out so I can take notes without wobbling the camera in the screen and having the noise of my typing putting a negative vibe on the interview. What I do like is being able to hide the camera, no tape or stickynote over it here. Looks so tacky. So there's my review. I didn't have to write one but really wanted to. I've had that good of an experience. If you're looking for anything outside of gaming. What a great machine to get. It does have USB-C and lightning ports for all the expansion you would want including an eGPU (again the gigabyte gaming box is the smallest and best deal, find an open box on newegg.com). Build quality, usability, user experience, and portability (inc charger) is phenomenal. Thanks for reading! (excuse any typos I'm not getting graded here lol) [link] [comments] |

Thoughts on the Asus Zenbook UX431? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 02:37 PM PDT Hello, I'd like to have your thoughts on the Asus Zenbook UX 431 . It's a fairly new laptop which came out last month. Is it worth the price? And if not, do you have any other laptops which would be better at that price range of ~800? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Can't decide between Xiaomi and Asus Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:44 AM PDT Hey guys.. Can you pls help me..I can't decide between Asus UX 333 and Xiaomi Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air 2018..what should i buy?.. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Acer Swift 3 OR Asus Vivobook S14 OR...? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 01:53 PM PDT Good morning guys! I need some help with deciding which laptop to choose. My budget is about 800-900€. Those are my main expectations:
Things that do not bother me:
Alright, so my first favourite one was the Lenovo Y530. Terrific design, but I guess it kinda lacks portability and the battery life. Then I stumbled upon the Swift 3 and, except for the design bothering me a little, I really like it. However, the Vivobook S14 seems quite decent too, especially the design, which is why I can't decide between those two. What would you advise? Or, are there even better laptops for me? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Is there a reason so many high=end laptops are lacking a Thunderbolt 3 port? Posted: 02 Apr 2019 07:31 PM PDT I don't get why you'd put out a $2k+ high-performance laptop and not include this. It's not a total dealbreaker for me, but it seems a bit silly. Is there a particular reason for this? edit: oof, sorry for title boo boo. I was too flustered :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2019 01:11 PM PDT Hi! My current laptop is a disgusting, useless piece of trash, probably made by Satan himself. After wasting an entire day trying to play the sims on it, I came to the conclusion that it HAS to die. I can't stand it anymore. So, here's the problem: though I've been reading articles and reviews for months, I can't seem to find /that/ perfect choice, the one you won't regret in the span of a week.
Both the new XPS13 and the XPS15 from Dell caught my attention, but I'm not totally sure about them. Please, dear reddit, help me before I go through my 25th mental breakdown. [link] [comments] |
Prevent hp probook 440 g5 booting from anything but ssd in case of theft? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 01:01 PM PDT So my ssd is encrypted but I want someone who might steal it from just reinstalling os and using it. I can password protect bios but afaik a person will still be able to boot from a USB, wipe the ssd and install an os. Any way to prevent that? I want to turn it into trash in case it's stolen. I disabled USB and networked boot (not sure if the latter poses a risk) and created a bios password. I'm guessing I've achieved my goal? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:58 PM PDT Thanks for taking the time to read this post (: My gaming laptop recently broke on me so I've been wanting (also needing) to get a new one. my budget is MAXIMUM of £2000 ($2600) and I was wondering about what recommendations people have about gaming laptops in this price range. Edit: My priorities are more performance oriented than anything else. However, I'd rather not get something that's too bulky. I'm pretty open to any suggestions you may have as I'm still gathering as much information on recommendations as possible. [link] [comments] |
Razer Blade 2019 vs Razer Blade 2018 Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:30 PM PDT I'm in the market to buy a Razer Blade laptop, and my budget is roughly $1500-$2000. I have looked at the Razer Blade Advanced Model 2018 (GTX 1060 max-q) for 1799 and the Razer Blade Base Model 2019 (also GTX 1060 Max - Q) for 1579. On paper they are quite similar, but the 2018 has a 512 gb SSD instead of a weird dual drive and it has a 144hz screen instead of 60hz. Any other differences or advice? It seems like the 2018 is the better option, but I've heard the thermals and other features are better on the 2019. Thanks [link] [comments] |
MSI GL63 8RE-673 please help me is this a good laptop? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 08:13 AM PDT Amazon has an excellent deal for $1469 $700 off. I was also looking at a razer 15's and Dell Inspirion 15 but this MSI laptop seems like the best bang for my buck 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8750H 6-Core Processor, 32GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB M.2 PCIe SSD + 2TB 2.5 HDD, 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) Display, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, Windows 10 Home) Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated folks! Crucial MX500 SATA M.2 not showing on my Lenovo 330s? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:01 AM PDT Not showing in the bios or anywhere. Not quite sure what the next step is. This is the 2nd one I'm trying, I thought the first may have been defective. [link] [comments] |
Dell G5 5590 i7 RTX 2060 2×8 16gb running really hot. Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:01 AM PDT This laptop runs really hot, even with an undervolt of -135mv it hits over 90C in Apex Legends. Don't know of this is normal, but I will probably be returning it, has anyone else had problems with this laptop? If mine is normal I would advise against buying this laptop. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2019 10:08 AM PDT Hi guys, I'm looking for a new laptop for my wife and am more of a desktop kinda guy so I'm having a hard time with whats good value. Budget is ideally sub £500 but i can flex a little if worth it. For her needs, i figure she'd most appreciate a 2 in 1 style device. Specs wise it needs to be snappy for browser and media consumption and SOME gpu horsepower is necessary, though not much. So far I've come across the ryzen 5 and mx130 variants of the Lenovo Yoga 530 and HP x360 which are... Okay. Screen quality however seems right down in the gutter. It would drive me to insanity seeing it over her shoulder. 200 nits and pathetic colour accuracy is just not good considering the amount of netflix she burns though, but maybe I'm being too picky and something on this list has to give way. Basically, does anyone know of a decent screen on a 2in1 with a ryzen apu or an mx130 or above? If not i'll have to look at the surface and its rivals I guess, or go back to traditional clamshell laptops. Edit: Feel free to reccommend things over budget that I can look out for used / refurb too :) [link] [comments] |
Is there any 100 watt chargers that the Matebook X Pro supports? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 09:44 AM PDT I seen that the Matebook X Pro supports up to 100 Watts in charging but the included charger is only 45 Watts. I'm not that familiar with chargers and wattage and stuff so if a 100 watt charger doesn't exist, what is the next best thing? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2019 05:49 AM PDT I'm planning on buying a new ultrabook soon and am confused about how much RAM I should get. I'm looking at the X1 Carbon which has the RAM soldered on so I can't upgrade it after purchasing. I'm a graduate student and will be using the laptop primarily for writing, browsing the internet (I usually have no more than 10 tabs open at a time), and some coding (nothing too intensive, although I will be using Mathematica which I find can take take up a fair bit of RAM at times). I will also be using Linux. My understanding is that 8GB is the standard (as the sidebar wiki says), but I've read that if I want to future-proof my laptop, it's a good idea to go for 16GB. How true is this, given what I'll be using the laptop for? I hope to have the laptop last at least 5 years so I'm willing to make a larger investment if necessary, but for the X1 Carbon, to get 16GB of RAM you also have to opt for a slightly more expensive processor (so the minimum 16GB model would cost about $200 more than the base model). I appreciate any advice! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2019 08:41 AM PDT Does anyone here know if its still possible to install precision drivers on any laptop? I'm looking to install them on a HP Spectre x360 but I don't know if its still possible/safe to do so. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Coming from Macbook, going to Lenovo X1. Wondering if I should wait? Posted: 03 Apr 2019 08:33 AM PDT Hi all. I hope you don't mind me throwing my hat into the "what should I do!?" ring. I currently have a Macbook Pro 13" (Late 2013) with Retina display. For various reasons I've become tired of MacOS, and I'm definitely not interested in the current macbook offerings, so I've been looking at getting a new Windows laptop. I think I've settled on the Lenovo X1 line (not sure yet if I'll go Carbon or Yoga). My question is: I know that Lenovo's newer models will come out in June. However, right now it looks like their website is offering a 25% discount on the current models. Based on what is currently known, would you suggest waiting for the latest/greatest, or are the current models a great deal at the discounted price? So far the only thing on the newer models that sounds interesting is the improved speakers, but I don't know if they're "$500 more expensive" better. Any input you can offer is appreciated. Thanks. Help buying a laptop, budget around £400-500 ($526-657 usd) Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:57 AM PDT Hi! I'm looking for a cheap laptop mainly for general use like using Microsoft office and internet etc, etc. The most I'd probably say it needs to run is MATLAB, although that's not an absolute necessity. Would definitely prefer to have a lighter laptop, as i have a desktop but am finding it limiting in where I can do work Any help would be appreciated thanks!! [link] [comments] |
notebook for engineering programs (3dmax, autocad, revvit) Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:40 AM PDT **Total budget and country of purchase:** 3000$ max, no specific country **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** i want good battery life and for it to be optimal for graphic designing **How important is weight and thinness to you?** not really important **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** strictly windows **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 17.3 inches preferably. i guess anything greater than 15.6 is fine **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** i guess its called CAD? the graphic designing stuff which engineer students use. programs like revvit and stuff... **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** absolutely no games on this notebook **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** i guess out of these id say build quality is most important **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** im asking for someone i know, so excuse my lack of knowledge about these programs and others. he wants it to be strictly for the engineering programs like 3D max. what im looking for is what the title states. any and all suggestions are helpful... thank you.
