    Simple Questions - April 03, 2019

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 05:14 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    Would you pick a 8700k & 1080ti or 9600k & 2800 if both combo's were the same price?

Title says it all. (Typo; rtx 2080)

    Edit: In a gaming pc.

Please help me. It seems no one knows how to fix my boot problem due to lack of replies.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2019 05:05 PM PDT

Please, if you see this post can you up vote it, just so I know that it's being seen, even if you don't reply. I'm obviously not karma whoring, I get no karma for text posts and it's also not my style. I just want more visibility so that I can maybe get this solved. Okay, here the issue now.

I'm stuck on this screen http://imgur.com/a/lBEBcnV

Won't boot into windows, won't boot into safe mode, won't boot from USB. I can access the BIOS but that's all.

What can I do? Any help is appreciated!

Edit: Thank you so much for helping to get this seen! I wasn't expecting so much support! I just woke up and my inbox is completely full of information from people trying to help me out, I am very greatful!

I am trying to respond to everyone's questions but there is so many, I'm just going to post the answers here.

All HDDs, SSDs and USBs are detected by the BIOS, however, I can't boot into any of them.

Specs: Mobo: ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming Motherboard (ATX) AMD Ryzen 2 AM4 DDR4 DP HDMI M.2 USB 3.1 Gen2 B450

Edit 2: Its my brother's pc so I haven't had the chance to actually get my hands on it and start removing components, I will do that as soon as I can though, have just been running him through things via video chat.

We used Rufus for the boot able flash drive, uefi.

    Boot order is set correctly.

We left the computer on that screen for 13 hours, never budged.

Sometimes the circles keep spinning, other times it freezes, usually when we try booting from flash drive.

I will try a Linux distro for the next bootable.

    I'll try reseting the CMOS.

When restarted 3 times, it tries to go into auto fix but just gets hung up like every other time.

My brother has a fancy keyboard, I'll try having him leave all usbs unplug and post results.

Didn't know text posts have karma, today's my cake day of 8 or 9 years, Im stuck in the past I guess. Ty for the help though, the support is what I was after.

Later today I will remove all hardware that I can and test piece by piece, I will post what worked for me if anything does so that if anyone in the future has this problem, they may be able to resolve it through this post.

I know I keep thanking you, but again, I am blown away by the amount of people trying to help. Thank you all so very much!

Edit 3: His keyboard is a Phantom techware 87 key.

His mouse is a death adder elite pro.

Also, would this have anything to do with the Asus hack?

Edit 4: my little brother gets home from school around 4 est time so that's when I will be trying all the fixes btw.

Edit 5: tried unplugging every USB, no dice.

Tried resetting bios to default setting, nada.

Made an Ubuntu live USB, booted right up and then gave an error before it got to the gui.

I will continue to update the progress of this process.

Edit 6: error was "Acpi error :method parse execution failed _sb.pcio.gpp2.ptxh.rhub and then a bunch of different stuff on each."

Long time console player looking to build a good PC.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 05:49 AM PDT

I'm sure you guys see this everyday, but as the title states I am a console player looking to make the switch to PC.

I should say I have some knowledge of building a PC, as I have built one before, but it was very basic, and wasn't for my own use. Despite this I am not confident on building my own PC for gaming.

Ideally I would like a good quality PC, the max on my budget would be £1k, I'm not even sure what that could get me in terms of quality.

I'm also not sure if I should get a pre made or build my own, since I'm sure building my own would be better value for money.

I would appreciate your guy's help, apologies if I have left out any important details.

    AMD vs Intel build

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:45 PM PDT

I've been in the planning stages of building a PC for a good while now, but the main part I'm still having trouble deciding is going Intel or AMD.

I'll admit that I'm more biased towards Intel, but if the pros outweigh the cons when it comes to AMD, I wouldn't mind going AMD.

Even though multitasking is much more achievable when it comes to AMD, I can't really see myself doing much more than gaming and the occasional streaming as a hobby, or maybe having Discord/Skype open while gaming.

As for what I'm trying to achieve, I'm ideally aiming for 80+ FPS in 1080p and possibly 60+ in 1440p. I'd love to hear what reddit thinks and any recommendations

EDIT: would also love to know the difference between the 2600 and 2600X other than the 100Mhz clock difference

What am I even doing? Want to build for first time in 20 years - what are all these fancy lights?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 03:01 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

Yes, I understood some of the words used there.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I haven't had a desktop build in many, many years. I want a gaming build, but will probably also use it for streaming, photo/video editing, and who knows what else...

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'd really like a setup that I can honestly max out on most games and not worry about caps/bottlenecks anywhere. I realize that's a broad and ambitious (read:undeliverable) statement across the board, but I'd like to get the best experience possible for resolution and frames in most situations. Unless I'm trying to run something with every mod available. Or Planet Coaster with more than 3 guests in the park at once :)

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I don't really have a max - but it can't be high enough that my wife would kill me if she saw the total bill. I guess I'm trying to keep it in the $3,000 range (not including the monitors, of which I still have no idea on, and any other accessories), but that isn't a hard cap (or floor - I don't have to spend that much if not necessary).

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    US

**Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Again, its been about 20 years since I had a PC build that I tinkered with. Since then, I've had a prebuilt desktop that I just added/upgraded on, various laptops and tablets and an iMac for my wife. Yes, I'm also a dirty console peasant. I've been wanting to get back into the PC realm and now I find myself with the time (and some energy) to actually do it.

I would like triple monitor setup - I have one at work that I use daily. Was thinking of a larger curved screen along with normal 23-27 inch on either side possibly. Again, I'm really open, but I've seen some great builds around here.

Also, everything is so colorful nowadays. Where did all the lights/leds come from? The last time I really worked on a PC, there was one light on it - a tiny little light above the power button that was red when it was off, then green when it was on. I'm not complaining, I think they look great - just so different from the off-white boxes that I used to have at my parents house growing up.

Anyway - any feedback and advice is much appreciate. Thanks in advance!

which gpu for 1080p 144hz? (esports gaming/low settings/3-5 years?) - buying in about a week!

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:07 AM PDT

will be playing mostly r6s on low settings, aiming for 1080p@120-144hz gaming at low settings

also will try to run some AAA titles at 1080p@60hz at high settings too?

hoping to keep this gpu for around 3-5 years if possible?

i have about a £320 budget, so im looking at used vega 64s/1080s, new 1660tis/vega 56s/1070s?

which gpu should i get/ any recommendations?

    been looking at:
    the zotac mini 1070 - £230

    msi air vega 56 - £250
    gigabyte windforce oc 1660ti - £255
used vega 64s/1080s on ebay around the £320 mark?

i will be getting a case with minimum 315mm gpu clearance, so triple fan gpus should be fine
also i will probably purchase a dark rock 4/pro 4 alongside the gpu
    i have a corsair TX750m gold 80+ 750w psu btw

any ideas on what i should do?

will be buying in around a week, so all help is welcomed?!

i can link some of the gpus listed above if anyone wants to inspect my suggestions
but im open to other gpu suggestions

main aim for this £320 gpu is longetivity (hopefully at least 3-5 years of solid gaming - but still fine with lowered settings)

    thanks all?!?

EDIT: i have a good pair of headphones and dont give a HOOT about noise btw

Need to buy a graphics card just to output video, what is the cheapest decent one that I can get?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 02:09 PM PDT

I'm building a new computer and keeping all of my old computer parts to use as a little home server. I'm going to take the GPU I have in my old computer and put it in my new one, but I will then need a GPU that will be able to just output video for my old computer. Ideally it would need to be AMD as the computer is running Linux. I tried looking on amazon at the different ones but they all have barely any reviews, and looking at eBay for old AMD cards feels like I'm begging to get dead mining cards. What GPU would you all recommend?

Installed new RAM, and now all my games won't load or they crash shortly after booting them. Please help.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:04 AM PDT

I just installed Corsair Vengeance 16 Gb 3200 MHz RAM. I had to RMA my last pair and I recently installed the new pair into my computer. My games are now crashing shortly after launch or when I try to load into a game. I did a MemTest86 and it showed no errors. However, I put in my old RAM and everything worked fine. As of right now, I did not OC the RAM at all. Any help would be appreciated, my RAM has been an issue for a while.

    Ryzen 5 1600 (not OC'd right now)

I would like to do a light overclock amd work on the memory timings to squeeze the most out of it. With the ryzen 2700x has anyone used thermal paste or liquid metal? I've read everywhere it doesnt make a big difference but after watching the following video:

    https://youtu.be/RacViOgpjsU

The oc'd thermal paste specs where quite impressive.

And looking at the following list

    https://img.purch.com/image006-png/w/711/aHR0cDovL21lZGlhLmJlc3RvZm1pY3JvLmNvbS9YL0YvNjk4NDUxL29yaWdpbmFsL2ltYWdlMDA2LnBuZw==

It seems for overclocking it may be useful. With the toms hardware list it seems the liquid metal makes it another couple of degrees cooler on top.

My question is, is it worth it to remove the stock thermal paste and use liquid metal in particular if it allows for better overclocking, lower temps, and a clear boost in performance for a $10 tube? Or alternatively is the ease of use of thermal paste a preffered option? OR.. keep it stock and reap no gains whatsoever?

Edit: uploaded correct parts list oops

Lian Li 0-11 Dynamic vs Razer Edition vs ROG v2

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:16 PM PDT

So I have wanted to buy the Lian Li 0-11 dynamic for a while for my new build. I recently learnt about the ROG v2, and the improvements on the standard 0-11. I read articles saying it was supposed to be released this month. I then found out, from OCUK an official response from someone inside Lian Li said it would only come out in June. I was saddened as I have already waited a month to finish my build cause I have all my parts just waiting for a case to go in. I am conflicted about what to do. Do I wait for it, do I pick up the standard 0-11 or even the razer edition. Incase anyone ask's I plan on using an 360 AIO and maybe in a year or two experiment with custom loops, but there is no guarantee that I will.

First build ever, looking for help. $1300-1400

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 09:41 AM PDT

Hey everybody, I've been lurking the subreddit for just a bit now trying to learn as much as I can before I put together my parts list. I've compiled a rough list and would love to hear your feedback on if these parts makes sense together, or what I could to to improve the build. Thanks for taking time to help this beginner.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I'd like to be able to use it for gaming and watching movies among other things. I'd also like to be able to do both of those things without having to close every other program I have running on my computer.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'd like to be able to run new AAA releases at high settings. I don't necessarily need to have them maxed out, as I'm not looking to spend $600+ on a GPU.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I would love to keep the build around $1350 including a monitor, but would be willing to spend a little extra if the build justifies it.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

I'll be purchasing the parts in the United States.

What will I be able to get for £400?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 04:15 AM PDT

I want to upgrade my PC as I'm currently using a 2011 mac with an AMD Radeon HD 6700M with 0.5gb VRAM. But I don't really have too much of a budget, being a student with a weekend job. I literally have no experience building my own PC, so i thought i'd come here and ask what a PC worth £400 could do.

So my 3 main questions are:

    - Is it worth it? (like, would I even be able to run anything)

    - What sort of games could I run?

    - Would I be able to upgrade it in the future?

    Thanks guys.

EDIT: As, I assume, most of you are American; £400 is about $526.69

Is a gtx 760 enough of a GPU for a dedicated internet streaming computer that would be used as the home entertainment system? I have a free gtx 760 and I am trying to figure out what to do with it.

PC w/ 3 screen setup question

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 03:26 PM PDT

Hi guys. Had a question about my current setup and wanted to see if there's anything I could do better. In my setup, I have a GTX 770 (2 HDMI outputs) and a 750 Ti (1 miniHDMI output). I use these ports to connect to:

    • a 144hz monitor (to 770)

    • an older 60hz monitor (to 750ti)

    • and now a 40" Roku TV (also to 770).

My big question is, is there an easy way to disable the Roku TV as a display? I have all 3 extended, but I will rarely use the Roku to display. I get I could just unplug the HDMI, but wondering if there's a way that doesn't require me to unplug? The screen is still a display (and I can move stuff there, which is what I want to avoid) even when the TV is off.

Also, will this extra display have any significant performance affect on my 770? Do plan on upgrading to a 570/580 in the near future, but still on hold.

    My new rig! (name it)

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 01:01 PM PDT

My build is complete! Just can't find an original name...

    • AMD Ryzen 7 2700X @ 4.2Ghz
    • Gigabyte B450 Aorus ELITE
    • 32GB @3000Mhz Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro (2x16)
    • Gigabyte RTX2070 White OC
    • Corsair RM1000i (Overkill but it was on sale)
    • Cablemod Meshpro White cable kit
    • NZXT H500i
    • Samsung 860EVO 250GB SSD
    • WD Blue 1TB HDD 7200RPM

Normally as a cooler I would have used the ML240R, but I don't have the AM4 cooler brackets anymore so I was unable to install them. Installed a normal Wraith cooler until I find those brackets somewhere...

Can we take a minute to address the ridiculous prices on used gpus?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 03:12 PM PDT

Here in Southern California, there never is a shortage of used pc parts. Sometimes some great deals can be had certainly. That being said, why do people feel justified in asking idiotic prices for parts? Old gpus in particular. For example: Spent a great deal of time arguing with some tool about how his 4gb evga gtx 970 isnt worth 250. Considering an 8gb Rx580 can be had for under 200 BRAND NEW. Proceeded to tell me that I have no knowledge of computers or 'the true capabilites' of the fabled GTX 970. Right... Not that I have been building PCs professionally for the last 10 years or anything.... Not that I have personally used that card over a dozen times like 5 years ago when they released... Anyone else have issue with this?

New to the PC world and I'm looking to buy a PC with a budget should I go built or prebuilt?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 03:04 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I'm fairly new to the PC world and I'm looking to buy a tower for gaming/streaming/editing.

I am on a budget of about $1000 (give or take). And I'm trying to get a machine that's good enough for streaming/editing aswell as occasional gaming. My question for you guys is it better to go built or prebuilt with my current budget? Any recommendations on what direction to take to get the most optimal machine for my said budget.

Any help or advice is always appreciated. Thanks

I'm looking to build a computer for my daughter, but really need help.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 03:00 PM PDT

I just created this account to make this post about building a computer for my daughter, she's 10 and has been watching some YouTubers that play games such as Fortnite or Minecraft, and she hasn't stopped talking about how she wants to play those games too, and supposedly her school mates play those games as well so she wants to join in on the fun. I've asked this on FaceBook but no one seems to be able to help me.

I'm a single stay-at-home Mom and my income isn't very much, I can maybe get 200 or 250 euro to get her a computer, but that would be as much as I can get, would 250 euro be enough for a computer that can play the games she wants to play? I suppose the games arent very heavy so the computer doesnt need to be amazing, but maybe some of guys that know what you're talking about can lead me the right way to getting her this so I can finally have some peace and quiet.
