Internet starts off fast but like me, loses stamina and gives up Posted: 11 Apr 2019 11:14 PM PDT so basically what happens is I start to download something and then it drops by like 90%. My internet is kinda shite on it's own only being able to download one megabyte a second, but whatever, at this point that's fast, because my internet keeps dropping to 100 kb/s. Here's what happens in Soulseek: 1,000 kb/s 1,000 kb/s 1,000 kb/s 1,000 kb/s 1,000 kb/s *bam get fucked kid* 100 kb/s it does this with Chrome downloads too, god can someone help me it's been doing this for as long as I can remember but I've been too lazy to ask for help. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Apr 2019 04:20 PM PDT Since it seems like hiding online activity is very difficult, is there any program that attempts to provide privacy by generating a lot of "white noise" from your IP/accounts/computer/anything? This wouldn't make it harder to track what you do online, but might make it harder to say that the data collected on you is actually accurate. For example, would something like a browser extension that quietly generates semi-random google searches in the background make it harder for google to target ads? [link] [comments] |
I think I'm victim of a DDoS attack. Posted: 11 Apr 2019 11:07 PM PDT This all started a couple of weeks ago. My nephew was playing minecraft on the computer and he won, some random guy sent him his IP and said he would do a DDoS on him. Now my computer won't connect to the internet and whenever I check Net-stat it has a lot of connection on SYN_SENT, some make it to ESTABLISHED but other go to "LAST_ACK". Everything else on my house works fine with the internet but the computer won't. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Apr 2019 06:47 AM PDT A few months ago I cleared out several gigs of useless stuff from my c drive(can't remember exactly what, I just remember I had to dig deep for a bunch of random files that people in forums talked about, among other stuff). Now I'm back at the point where there's very little space in my c drive again. I haven't installed anything in my c drive and cleared my downloads folder till there's only a few mb of stuff left. Disk Cleanup doesn't show I have any leftover files from windows update installations either. Is there anything that's maybe building up a ton of cache or something? [link] [comments] |
Event ID 41 Kernel Power Error. Need Help. Posted: 12 Apr 2019 01:54 AM PDT So I just bought a new computer. Like just purchased. Its been set up for maybe 3 days. I left my room for 3 minutes came back and it seems as if my computer restarted, so I checked the event log ( a thing i just learned about because of this problem) and it said this error. Things that just happened recently is I just updated a driver today using the geforce experience app. And a couple days ago I downloaded something from a site called sourceforge called mpc-be, which is just like a media player. I don't think the download was unsafe and dont know if this error could be caused by a download. but my virus protection says I am completely clean. I have never seen this error before on any computer I have owned. Does anyone know why this happened? Was it just a one time thing or is it likely to happen again? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Apr 2019 05:14 PM PDT I tried changing my ipv4 DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, and then about an hour later none of my devices could connect to the internet. I tried changing the settings back to automatic DNS, and now the problem persists. I've tried flushing the DNS and a few other cmd commands but nothing works. I just want my internet back... What could the problem be? [link] [comments] |
BIOS/PC suddenly only recognized half my RAM size. Posted: 11 Apr 2019 10:05 PM PDT This morning I realized my PC only recognized half my RAM size. I have a 2x4 Corsair XMS DDR3 and it only recognized 4GB instead of 8GB. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Apr 2019 09:32 PM PDT My PC won't even boot to the bios, when I turn it on fans start spinning then after a couple seconds it shuts down and turns back on again over and over. I tried reseating the ram and putting the sticks in different slots together and solo in every possible configuration. If both sticks are unplugged the fans stay on and it doesn't boot loop so I'm assuming the ram is the issue? What are the odds of both sticks going out at the same time? Maybe it's the motherboard? idk. The mobo is a z97-a. My bad on the formatting I'm using my phone to post this 😠[link] [comments] |
Sony headphones quality drops when plugged into new PC Posted: 12 Apr 2019 02:59 AM PDT I recently purchased a new gaming PC, as well as a pair of Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones. When using the headphones on my iPhone or MacBook, the quality is fantastic, however when I plug them into my PC, the quality often drops significantly. Occassionally the quality will be fine and at the same level as when I'm using the headphones with all my other devices, but for some reason it's not consistent and I don't know why. My PC uses ASUS Realtek HD Audio Manager and I'm connecting my headphones with a cable (the cable is fine as i've tested it on my other devices). Does anybody know what the issue may be? Thanks for taking the time to read. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Apr 2019 02:36 AM PDT Troubleshooting Help: What is your parts list? https://pcpartpicker.com/list/vD8z3b The parts are all fairly new. The PC in this configuration had been working well for about 3-4 months. Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive. On Tuesday I was playing X-Plane 11 and had been in the sim for about 90 mins and it crashed with my screen losing signal. Only fix was a hard reset. Thought it was just a problem with the game. Had another crash in X-Plane the next night much more quickly. Last night tried several different games (Forza Horizon 4, Football Manager 19, GTA 5) with crashes happening either straight away, after a few seconds or a minute or so. Either a no signal or frozen screen and hard reset is the only remedy. Normal operation (ie browsing) seems to work ok. Cannot think of any system or software changes I made on Tuesday that would have brought this issue. List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem. I tried Windows memory check which reported no problems and then tried stress testing CPU (Prime95) and GPU (FurMark). CPU was fine, got hot but stable. GPU can't get past the first sec. Either a no signal black screen or freezes on the first frame. So thinking it's possibly a GPU problem. Used DDU to remove graphics drivers in safe mode, rebooted and installed just nvidia drivers from their site. Has made no difference. I took the side of the case off and everything looks to be plugged in ok. Tried resetting some bios settings to default. RaM overclock and fast boot. Went to a few games to try kept crashing. Now opened up other side of case and now computer won't boot at all. Don't even see bios screen. CPU fan doesn't look like it's spinning but can't see any loose connections. I've literally taken everything out and won't boot. Tried removing GPU and using one stick of RAM at a time. Wonder if it's a PSU or Motherboard issue? Only case fans and some leds come on. Light around power switch doesn't turn on when button turned on and obviously won't boot at all now. Any ideas? Thanks [link] [comments] |

Posted: 11 Apr 2019 08:20 PM PDT Hi guys, I print maybe a dozen shipping labels a day and got tired of cutting up an A4 page from a laser printer so decided to do it properly and get a thermal printer... Weeks of frustration later and I'm getting no-where, so am looking to you for help. I've tried two different thermal printers (Zebra GK-420D and Gprinter Gp-1324D) and two different label medias but Australia Posts' own shipping labels from their MyPost Business portal do not print a readable barcode due to the barcode being printed vertically (the bars are horizontal) which a thermal print head is not designed for (print head takes time to heat up/cool down). This is the BEST result I can get, by printing at the slowest speed (51mm/s) and at 0 darkness and oversizing the label to 107%, no dithering: https://i.imgur.com/15nLoQQ.jpg - shown here next to the actual code. I've rotated the code in Acrobat and it prints perfectly, this issue is 100% caused by the barcode being vertical. What confuses me is why no-one else is having this issue? Surely there's thousands of people printing these Auspost labels with thermal printers? If anyone with a 100mm wide thermal printer can try and print this sample label and let me know if their printer works with it I would appreciate it: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1tyjNngHhJcADnebMyfKc41Qm3P3eFB4O [link] [comments] |
Made an oopsie with my RAM. PC had an aneurysm. Posted: 12 Apr 2019 02:07 AM PDT I bought my new RAM. 2x8 Corsair Venegance RGB I made a minor fuckup and didnt check the speed that my motherboard could handle. Spent about 40 mins before i gave up and brought it to the shop. (Currently on mobile cause it's still there.) I was told that it dosen't necessarily matter with the speed of the RAM by a friend but i dont know who to believe. Also the shop is saying it might be something to do with the hard drive now. As the PC starts up. But freezes 10 minutes later. Can someone help me figure out the issue? I'm trying to prevent stuff like this further on. (I'll start by checking what i'm actually getting in-depth more.) I can put a picture of the memory that i bought uf it helps. The person working on the pc was a bit stumped too at first and is trying to work it out but he never really explains the issue which is why i'm asking here. [link] [comments] |
PC with SSD slows extremely down Posted: 12 Apr 2019 05:05 AM PDT Hope I'm right here with this problem, the flair is right and you can understand my problem (I'm sorry for my english in advance) A friend of mine has gotten a PC update a few weeks ago. He has gotten a new SSD with Windows 10 (before he had just an HDD with Windows 7). Bc Windows 7 was still on the HDD he had to choose in a Windows Boot-Menu, which one he wanted to start. That was never a problem, he always choosed Windows 10 and everything worked just fine, until he accidentaly opened Windows 10 one day and the PC slowed down extremely. He restarted and chose 10 again, but it still slowed down. The first half minute, after it Windows started, you cannot open anything and only the cursor respnods to your inputs. We looked into the Boot-Menu (the real one) and changed the Boot order, so the SSD with Windows 10 is number one, but it changed completely nothing. Hope anybody of you guys can help [link] [comments] |

DS4 Controller not working unless both InputMapper and DS4Windows are on. Posted: 12 Apr 2019 04:57 AM PDT So up until about a week or two ago DS4Windows worked fine for me, I would plug my controller in and it would just work, but after a restart it suddenlt stops detecting my controller. I try to fix this and I can't figure out what's wrong so I decide to use a different software, but for some reason InputMapper does not detect my controller unless DS4Windows is turned on. To add to the mystery DS4Windows does not detect the controller at all so I have no idea why it needs to be on for InputMapper to work. I've tried uninstalling all drivers, reinstalling, rolling back windows updates and nothing happened, I have found something that changed though where my 'HID-compliant game controller' driver now says 'Device not migrated' in the events tab where previously it would be 'Device migrated'. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
[meta] What are your go-to explanations or best analogies for noob customers? Posted: 12 Apr 2019 04:56 AM PDT I just started tech support. How do you explain simple things like "why does WiFi go away when you are not home, etc" to customers? Or why does your battery drain so fast due to apps while his battery doesn't? Is anyone interested in this kind of discussion or is this totally the wrong place? (Please let me know, I will delete it then) Thanks anyway! [link] [comments] |

Random artifacts while in non-GPU intensive game along with other issues. Posted: 12 Apr 2019 04:49 AM PDT So I've been having some issues. Here's my current build: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant Issue: Basically, something's happening with my graphics card. Can't tell if it's just defunct or not. Here are a few screenshots of what's happening in-game. I checked multiple games. On DMC5, it causes the same issue with random artifacts and graphical "spikes" shooting out everywhere. On some other games, it'll have trouble loading properly. The weird thing is... well the glitches occur for ~10 minutes while I play, which is weird. Then there will be like a hard "freeze" moment where all my monitors will stutter for a bit and everything will run like it's on 2 FPS. I'll try open task manager and I usually get up to get a drink. By the time I get back, like 2-3 minutes, task manager would be open and... well the graphics glitches would be gone for the rest of the time until I restart my computer. I very recently did a clean install of Windows 10 Pro on this M.2 drive, which I installed last week, with updated graphics drivers and everything. The only two games I have on the new drive is League and DMC5. Also, prior to doing a clean W10 Pro install, I was having some issues like a month or two ago, you can read the details here. TLDR on that is that I didn't know installing 4 sticks of RAM could stress out a system so much and prevent it from properly running all 4 @ 3200. If more information about my system is needed, I'll provide what I can. https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/16188821 Also not sure how to take it, but it says my GPU performing seemingly way below expectations. Powered on my 10 year old graphics card, it's probably busted, would love another opinion Posted: 12 Apr 2019 12:57 AM PDT It's an old 9600 GT, like 10 years old Bought a new 400W PSU to test it out, so that shouldn't be the problem, although I don't know if bad connections cause this kinda artifacting It's hooked to the monitor with a DVI to VGA converter, that's brand new too, hasn't been tested yet It was sitting gathering dust for around 5 years coz when I first got it I didn't know anything about building PCs, and the inept people I took it to for installation never checked the power requirements, it's blown around 3 PSUs before it was taken out I guess it's busted, but I'd love it if I get another opinion [link] [comments] |
New ISP Has A Weird Setup Chain And I Could Use A Bit Of Input Posted: 12 Apr 2019 04:43 AM PDT To start, I am a longtime DD-WRT user, and have pretty good and intricate knowledge of networking tech. So I'm pretty good when it comes to setting up Internet. I recently moved to the outskirts of PHX where Internet is almost non-existent. 90% is 2Mbps DSL (capped at 1TB monthly usage), 8% is 5Mbps Coax (also capped at 1TB monthly usage), and the rest is under 15Mbps Microwave (with unlimited usage). That's provided by Phoenix Internet. The way that Phoenix Internet works is weird, however. I could use some outside input! Phoenix Internet Setup: - They use a special dish that uses microwaves to catch a signal from a tower. That dish sits on the roof. - The dish has an RJ45 jack on it. It does not use coax. - They run a CAT5/6/7 Ethernet cable from the dish's RJ45 jack into the house. - THERE IS NO MODEM! This is where is gets wonky. - That Ethernet cable they run from the dish into the house connects DIRECTLY to whatever device will use the Internet. - For me, the Ethernet cable runs from the dish DIRECTLY into my R7000 router with DD-WRT - Phoenix Internet then authorizes the device by its MAC address to use their service. So they too my R7000's MAC and authorized my router to direct connect to their service. Weird, right?!? - There is no special ISP login info. It's all MAC based authentication. - After that, the router should directly send/receive packets from Phoenix Internet. But I had a bit of trouble using DD-WRT on my R7000 to access the internet this way; my R7000 was sending packets but not getting any in return from Phoenix Internet (Phoenix Internet said my R7000 router was showing to them as being in "walled garden" mode, despite not being set up as any kind of "public hotspot". Weird)... Anyway, my W10 PC saw the router fine, but didn't see the internet and kept timing out. This was also the case when I connected to the R7000 over Wifi; they would send packets but all time out. I was so close to flashing back to factory firmware, sadly. But first, I did a complete 30/30/30, cleared the NVRAM, reset the router firmware to factory defaults (in the DD-WRT Administration tab), and then rebooted. (Side note: the R7000 was already using factory defaults as I'd JUST hard reset it a few days ago. So the R7000 was ALREADY using factory defaults and reset a few days earlier). When the R7000 finished booting, MAGICALLY, the R7000 was sending and receiving packets to/from Phoenix Internet! And my W10 PC saw the internet connection, as did all devices connected to the R7000 over Wifi. So now the internet was magically working! HERE ARE MY QUESTIONS: If my R7000 using DD-WRT was literally just 30/30/30 reset, NVRAM reset, and factory reset a few days ago (and Phoenix Internet wouldn't work), so then I ran the SAME reset process on my R7000 again (and now Phoenix Internet MAGICALLY worked), then:
I cannot find anything on Google about using DD-WRT with no modem between the DD-WRT router and the direct internet (with no ISP logins). But I have LOTS of changes I need to make to my R7000 and I cannot do that if I have no clue how to make this work at the basic level. And I do not want to have to hard reset a million times and repeatedly lose everything to keep basic internet. And I DO NOT want to have to flash back to factory firmware. I need DD-WRT. Apologies for the long post, but I have far too many changes I need to make to my router, and I need to make sure my internet continues to keep working. Best wishes, and many thank, my friends. Windows installation/new system Posted: 12 Apr 2019 04:37 AM PDT I build my 1st pc yesterday, when the time came to install Windows it gave me the option of two partitions (new Samsung 860evo SSD). I didn't want two partitions so I deleted the smaller one. After that I tried to install on the full drive but it said that it couldn't cause it was configured in GPT. I cleaned the disk with diskpart and configured it in MBR. I'm trying again now but it said that "windows cannot be installed as the disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, windows can only be installed to GPT disks". What have I done wrong and how can I fix it? [link] [comments] |
Triple channel memory vs dual channel memory on x58 Posted: 12 Apr 2019 04:33 AM PDT Hi, I'm looking to purchase an Asus P6T6 WS motherboard but apparenty there are problems with the memory controller and the third stick of memory is not registering. But for about the same price I have an option to buy Gigabyte GA-X58-USB3 which is of course an inferior board in terms of vrm, connectivity and etc but all the memory slots are working. What kind of performance decrease am I going to have with dual channel memory vs three channel memory? Should I go with the Asus board or with the Gigabyte board? Thanks [link] [comments] |
