Where to start with a home network? Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:47 PM PDT Hi! I'm a college IT student. I'd like to have a little more control over my home network and possible improve whatever I can just for fun. I'm just unsure where to start or what to buy to begin building a nicely setup home network? I'm currently completing CCNA2 and have a fair amount of experience and knowledge with electronics and am pretty handy. My ISP: Charter (cable) roughly 100MBPS down and 20-30 MBPS up. Currently just have the company loaned router/modem. I have a job and have a good amount of spending money, I'm just unsure where to start. I'd like to be able to see who's on the network, remove them (if possible) and possibly have a networked set of drives for storing photography and videography materials as that's one of my biggest hobbies. Maybe other things, I don't really know the possibilities beyond this that would be useful to me. Sorry if this is so broad. Just looking for advice! [link] [comments] |

Provider's set-top box not behind firewall? Posted: 02 Apr 2019 11:05 AM PDT So... recently moved, from one side of the valley to another. Same provider for network, phone & TV, just different counties. Previous setup had fiber to the house, then from the provider's box there was co-ax inside to the set-top box, and cat 5 ethernet to the network jack where I plugged in my router/ap. Current setup, has one cat 5 going to the network jack as before, and a second going to the main living room for the set-top box (instead of co-ax). According to the install tech, this county's utility (which runs fiber, power, water, etc.) requires ethernet on all new installs. The way he made it sound (I didn't get a chance to peek in the box to check) is they just have a switch in there for the cat5 running to the various jacks in the house. All well and good, great having my set-top box directly connected to the 100/100 fiber outside, at least as far as speed... ...but it got me wondering: seems a bit odd to have a direct network connection into the house that isn't firewalled off from the big bad Internet. Granted, the only thing on it is their set-top box, which I'm going to assume (or at least hope) is pretty well hardened... and even if it isn't, it's not on the same (internal) network as the rest of the household devices (PCs, tablets, printer, NAS, etc. etc.) Would there be a good argument for having that set-top box instead routed through the main network firewall/router for the house? Or is it best to leave it 'outside' the house network, sort of in its own little DMZ? Guess I'm a little concerned about there being an unsecured network port right there in the living room... Looking for a cheap router to turn into an access point for my two story home Posted: 02 Apr 2019 05:18 PM PDT I was reading that you could use old routers as access points and I don't really want to spend upwards of $80-100 on an ubiquiti AP. Is there any downside from using an older router as an AP? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2019 12:31 PM PDT Here's an example: When I'm at the office I'm not able to access certain websites due to their network policy. I've set up a simple docker container running firefox behind a reverse proxy at home, and I'm now able to access these websites using this container. When I go to whatismyipaddress it shows the WAN of my home network. What exactly is happening here? Is this traffic visible to my employer? I'm assuming it is because I'm not connected to a VPN, but why am I no longer restricted by their policy? [link] [comments] |

Replacing Xfinity Comcast modem. Posted: 02 Apr 2019 02:12 PM PDT Planning to cut back on bills where I can and replacing the modem saves me money in the long run. However I don't know what I should be looking for. My current plan is 60Mbps and is Internet only if that helps. I also live in a small apartment. If you need me to provide anymore details I'll be more than happy to. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2019 05:13 PM PDT Hello everyone. I'm currently renting out a flat in London and while it comes with Internet, it's also got 8 people using the same router. I've emailed one of the main ISPs (virgin media) and they assure me they can get me a completely new setup just for myself, while the other one is running for the remaining people in the same building. Great news. However, the agency whom I'm renting from, well let's just say he isn't exactly a nice guy, might have an issue with any drilling in the house in general or the flat I'm in so it is possible he'll say no. However since there is already a router in place, I'm guessing all the wiring is all prepared for. I have found however a connector in the room which I'm not sure if it can be used or not for an Internet setup, so I need help from you guys to see if the router can be connected to this or not (that way I wouldnt have to have anything drilled). Since I cannot post a picture I'll leave the link here: https://m.imgur.com/a/phZRmi2 TL;DR: getting new setup from ISP. Can this connector be used to place the router in my flat? Thanks for any help PS: also got an Ethernet port inside my flat, does that help? [link] [comments] |

Switching to xfinity looking for a good modem and router Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:11 PM PDT I'm trying to save some money and get a good router modem set up. I will have 150mbps down speed which I may upgrade in the future. Any recommendations on a modem and router that I should look into? I plan to be gaming quite a bit as well as some 4K streaming so any recommendations will help [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2019 06:57 AM PDT Hi guys, I figured out everything I need for my network setup. The last issue and I do not have all of the info yet. I am sure the Cox cable entry that connects to the modem will be in a weird place. How hard is it to run a long cox cable to my network setup that doesnt look like crap. Would using the clear cord clips work or would there be a better solution. Somebody said to run it under where the carpet meets the wall. Im open to ideas. [link] [comments] |
Why is my internet speed lower than what the modem speed can provide? Posted: 02 Apr 2019 09:35 AM PDT I purchased Arris surfboard SB6183. Online it said that it gets up to 683mbps. I am only getting up to 100 but my service is for 200. I have checked connection line from Spectrum and they said connection and ping from the cable is good. When I use Spectrum's Arris router I do get up to 200mbps but not mine. What am I doing wrong? All speeds based on hard wire Ethernet connection. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2019 01:09 PM PDT Hey guys new poster I have a xfinity account with gigabit and cable So I recently bought a unifi gateway and a ap pro access point My question is can I use my rented modem plug my unifi gateway into the xb6 then use my ap pro WiFi to work with xi6 boxes or would I need to hard wire the xi6 into my new router ? Apple 6th Gen Airport Extreme VS Ubiquiti for mainly apple household Posted: 02 Apr 2019 12:36 PM PDT Hi, I'm thinking about replacing my 6th Gen Airport extreme for one of the Ubiquiti Aps (Pro or nanoHD) for a mainly apple household. In the past I've read that apple products work best with Airport Extremes because they use the same broadcom wifi chipset so therefore they communicate better. But, that isn't the case anymore, because the latest apple products do not use Broadcom anymore. I once even spoke to ubiquiti's chat support and they told me to keep using my apple airport extreme because it worked better than their products for apple devices. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |

Ubuntu VPS as OpenVPN Server - Connects but no internet access Posted: 02 Apr 2019 12:06 PM PDT Hello, I just purchased a VPS service and I am trying to setup an OpenVPN server on it to connect my own Ubuntu box too. I have got the Server running so that I can connect the Ubuntu box and it gets an local IP. I can ping the box when I ssh into the VPS so the local network is working but I cannot access the internet from the box. I assume it is some problem with the tun0 interface talking to the WAN interface which is venet0. Also my box does not get a default gateway from the server. I have attached my server and client configs as well as the route tables of the VPS. Thanks in advance! Server.conf Client.conf VPS Routing Table [link] [comments] |
Replacing Xfinity Comcast Cable Modem and need suggestions Posted: 02 Apr 2019 08:11 AM PDT Turns out that I've been paying $13 a month for the last like 3 years for this mediocre cable modem box. I'd like recommendation for any devices that I can get to replace it. Budget is $150 but I can probably spare a couple extra bucks if it's only $160. I pay for gigabit and I looked up the box online and it's only capable of pumping out 700mb/s... [link] [comments] |
Apologies for another multiple router question Posted: 02 Apr 2019 11:25 AM PDT I have a basic question that I'm sure is answered many times before but I can't readily find the answer... I have standard DSL using a ISP provided modem / router. I also have a secondary ASUS wifi router. I am currently using the secondary as an access point to extend the coverage in the house. In the past though, I somehow had both routers operating in router mode and had two wifi networks in operation (connected to each other via ethernet). It ran this way for a couple of years but then something went wonky a few months ago and I had to switch the secondary ASUS router to access point mode. In doing this, I lost the management capabilities of that router which I used to manage the network times of my kids. I do not like the management capabilities of the Windstream provided main router; in fact, I can't even get them to work at all. In any case, my question is, is there a proper way to daisy-chain the two routers where the primary runs a wifi network, as well as the ethernet connections it has, and then 'feeds' the pipe to the secondary which then takes that and operates a second separate wifi network? Or is it necessary to 'dumb' one of them down to a simple access point? And then, if the latter is true, can I 'dumb' the primary router down and use the secondary as the wifi router, in which case will the primary offer wifi access? I hope some of that made sense. Thanks for any advice! [link] [comments] |

I'm between the R7800, Orbi RBK50, or the Eero home w/ outlet AP's Posted: 02 Apr 2019 11:01 AM PDT After lots of research and getting others opinions, this is where I am at. I still have to narrow it down to which one though. I did consider doing an ERX and an AC-Lite or Pro, but from what I was researching and reading, it was almost better going with these others for my use cases. Heres what I have attached to Wifi constantly running in my house (small villa): Roku 4K, Chromecast 4K, Blink Cameras, Multiple Cellphones, Multiple Laptops, PS4, Nintendo Switch, A smart TV regularly streaming 4K content, and Google Home. I will also soon be adding many more smart devices (plugs, Light bulbs, etc..) Anyone got further recommendations on what route to take? Is Mesh even worth doing in a small home even if I plan to move in the future to a slightly larger home? I want the fastest possible 4K streaming with little to no quality loss when the network is under load from all the other devices. NOTE: I do PC game but I am direct connected on that so I want something with the fastest speeds imaginable with directconnect (little bloatware crap to go through as possible) though I will probably just DMZ myself. Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:41 AM PDT I have 1000Mbps Fiber service at my house and wired I am easily able to hit 900+ on a speed test. Recently I bought an Asus Rog AX11000 router. The 5ghz reach on this thing is amazing. I am pulling 200+ Mbps at the back of the dollar general behind my house. It's that crazy. However.. I am not really getting the best speeds inside my home on either of the 5ghz networks or the 2.4ghz. I know 5ghz is typically the fastest but with less range which doesn't seem to be too much the case for this device, but I am just not getting what I thought I would. I am far from any type of networking guru or settings master. This device has a LOT of options and I think I must be missing something as far as set up to really get the power / speed from this thing I should be. The RBK50 Orbi I have was going faster inside which is concerning to say the least. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2019 09:46 AM PDT I didn't have much luck yesterday, in fairness I probably used a lot of terminology incorrectly. Anyways, I'd like to set up a VLAN for a seedbox - if possible I'd also like to have dual Ethernet plugging into everything as well in order to link aggregate and in theory (I think) double throughput to 2 Gbps. See my chicken scratch: I wouldn't plan on making a rule to restrict the LAN and VLAN from communicating as I want the NAS(es) to be on the regular LAN for the TVs and such, but I do plan on having PIA on the VLAN and only letting the seedbox see internet from there. Can a D-Link DGS-1100-08 EasySmart accomplish link aggregation and VLAN? I believe my setup will require two Am I on the right track? Lol [link] [comments] |
Which router/modem specifications to look for and which might be best? Posted: 02 Apr 2019 08:33 AM PDT Hello all Technological noob here.
