    -16gb of ram ddr3

I mainly use my pc for gaming and i would like to be set for the next 1-2 years.
Also both processors are buyable for me at 317 bucks, so money won't be a factor here.

Thank you very much in advance !

Edit: i'm really overwhelmed by all the traction this is getting ! I thank every one of you guys for trying to Help, i'm really amazed at how Kind and helpful this community is !

Downsizing from ITX to ATX...wait...what?! | My Cerberus X impressions (warning, LONG)

    Introduction

I recently switched from the NZXT H200i (mini-ITX, ~26L) to the Cerberus X (E-ATX, ~19L). After a few weeks of usage and testing I wanted to go ahead and give my thought process and results.

    Purpose and Problems

I was originally using an NZXT H440 in white, as seen HERE in my 2017 build. Sure, it was a nice enough case, but it had some issues. It dominated the space, so it couldn't be on my desk. And the further I put it from my desktop, the less easily I could use the height-adjustment feature of my desk. Simply put, I wanted the case on my desk, but to not dominate it.

Enter the NZXT H200i, which I bought at launch in December 2017, as you can see HERE in my 2018 build. But that brought with it some unforeseen problems. The EVGA G2 PSU that I was using completely covered the bottom intake, while completely choking off the GPU from air. Temps were higher than expected and I tried several workarounds. To be clear, the temps were well within spec, and it was the fan noise that bothered me. I wanted my PC to be as quiet as possible, and when a case is 2 feet from your head, you are going to hear fan noise.

To clarify, this is what I mean by fan noise. I've heard people tell me that the Noctua NF-A12x25 is silent up to ~1,500 RPM. Some claim it's quiet at up to 2,000 RPM. It's not. At least not when 2 feet from your head. I have to run mine at around 900 RPM for effectively total silence. So clearly, I have a more stringent definition of silence than many, but now you should have an idea of what I was going for.

The MSI GTX 1070 Ti Titanium that I was now using (not pictured in the above builds, my 2019/2020 build will be uploaded sometime later, hence the coy cropping on the top photo) was running at 77-82° in World of Warcraft at up to 2,100 RPM on the stock fan curve. It ran cooler and quieter in other games, but still warmer/louder than I would like. There's something about WoW that pushes cards to a higher power draw despite not being a modern looker. Since this was my worse case scenario and the game that I play the most, it's what I'm using to measure temps with. Also, my case is above the forced air vent in my office, which is bi-directional. So in the summer it's fine with A/C blowing at it. In the winter? With heat blowing at it, it's a problem.

Enter the Cerberus X, manufactured and distributed in North America by Sliger. I had a few criteria for a replacement to the H200i, and they were:

    • Able to accommodate a wide range of parts, not too many compromises
    • White
    • Opaque panel so I didn't have to color-coordinate the interior
    • Ability to allow for good airflow without the need for liquid cooling
    • A small footprint so that it could remain on my desk
    • Support for ATX motherboards for the next round of upgrades

The Cerberus X appeared to be the solution to my problems.

    Configuration and Results

I knew that I wanted to do air cooling exclusively, with a tower-style cooler. I opted to maintain my Cryorig H7 (which does fit, if you remove the included side bracket). This meant a few things. First, I'd need an SFX or SFX-L PSU, so I opted for the Corsair SF450 Platinum (I did try it in the H200i for about a week, and it didn't make an impact, surprisingly).

Then, I needed to come up with the case fans and layout. I opted for four Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM fans. I used two for the intake at the bottom, one as a front/bottom intake, and the last one to replace the stock fan on the H7. You can see the layout HERE. I apologize for the lack of cable management. The idea behind this fan layout is positive pressure (all 3 case fans pulling air in) plus convection cooling (heat rises), forcing most of the warm air either out the top vent or forced out the rear by the CPU cooler.

Finally, I needed to swap the GPU. The MSI GTX 1070 Ti Titanium was 140mm tall, but with the power connectors, it went past the 154mm allowed for the side panel. So I got the MSI RTX 2060 Gaming Z. This would be a sufficient side grade as GPU performance wasn't an issue for me. The rest of the system specs:

    • Intel Core i7-7700k
    • EVGA Z270 Stinger ITX motherboard
    • G-Skill Ripjaws V 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3000 CL 15
    • Samsung 960 Evo 1TB NVME

And that's literally it aside from the aforementioned PSU and GPU. I really could have gone with a smaller case, but I'll be switching to an ATX platform later this year or early next. Just getting ready.

First I ran the system with the MSI Titanium. I wanted to see if it cooled down. This was more like an open-air test bench as the side panel could not be put on. Temps dropped from a peak of 82° to 67°. Fan RPM plummeted. It was quiet. Mission accomplished. Time to put in the 2060, put on the side panel, and see how bad it gets.

The new card? 63° under full, sustained loads. I can get it to spike to 65° if the home heating is going full blast, but the card quickly knocks it back to 63°. Fan RPM is typically around or under 1,200 RPM, with occasional pushing to near 1,300. It's quiet. In fact, it has one minor issue. For lighter gaming loads the temps will on rare occasion drop into the low 50s and the fans will eventually cut off, so you can hear them spin back up briefly when the temp surpasses 60°. But it's a short burst and not very loud.

My next concern was CPU temps. The setup that I have greatly favors the GPU. Using an extremely conservative fan curve on the Cryorig H7, gaming temps tend to be in the 50s (I can get into the 60s in Forza Horizon 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider). This is a few degrees warmer than the H200, but nothing to complain about. Using Handbrake, my most demanding CPU task, it fluctuates between 67° and 70° C. That's with the Noctua NF-A12x25 attached to the H7 running at only 1,335 RPM. This thing is silent!

    Imperfections

No case is perfect, so here I'm going to mention ALL of the flaws of the Cerberus X.

First, it's not a mass-produced case. As such, the price is higher than what a similar mass-produced case would potentially cost. However, there's no mass-produced competition so while the price is high, we can't say it's a poor value for what it gives.

Next is the overall design. It is not filtered (though you can order compatible filters), so dust will be a concern. I'm going to watch this and see how bad it gets, and if necessary, I'll move to the filters down the road.

Another issue with the design is that there is almost zero thought given to cable management. Basically, everything was put into making this as compact as possible while housing larger parts with fewer compromises. Yes, you can use an ATX mobo, an ATX PSU, a 280mm AIO, and a fairly large GPU. But there's no room between the rear-side panel and the mobo tray. Absolutely none. So you'll need to get creative with the cable management. No big deal for me (as you saw from the mess in the interior photo), but those who opt for the windowed panel will take issue with this to some degree.

While the case supports E-ATX, ATX, and ITX, there's no standoff holes pre-drilled for MicroATX. So keep that in mind if buying this case over the non-X version, which supports both MicroATX and ITX.

Finally, the top vent/panel. In white, I can see what look like black dots along the top, because the paint job is less than perfect. Basically in many of the holes, at the edge of where the hole meets the top, there's a small chip in the paint. This is in the majority of the holes and from where I sit it's quite obvious, and you can see it HERE (zoom in if needed), though it's more pronounced in person. I suspect this will be an issue with the white and red versions, but fine for the black and grey. I'm ok with it, but if you're OCD, get the black-top option for your white or red case.

In summary, the flaws are price, lack of included filtering, lack of included cable management options, lack of MicroATX support, and chips in the top white (and likely red as well) panel.

    Regrets?

Anytime I do a build, I look over and ask myself if there was anything that I could have or would have done differently. Since this was just a transplant and the ATX platform is coming, I'm not upset about using an ITX system in this case for now. I purchased the SF450 Platinum out of caution (size), but for half the price, an additional 3-years on the warranty, and a larger/quieter fan, the SeaSonic Focus SGX 450 would have been a more compelling option. The PSU's fan is the loudest component, but it's not "loud," just "least quiet." And that's it.

    Conclusion

I outlined above what I was aiming for in a case. The Cerberus X met or exceeded every requirement. The flaws that it has either don't impact me, or can be mitigated through reasonable measures (separate filters, black top). Everytime I purchase a product there's some form of compromise that I have to make. Not this time. After 4 cases in 3 years, I think I've finally found the successor to my Lian-Li K10B, which I used for 7 years (May 2008 - August 2015).

    What's Next?

If you clicked through my build photos above, you'll see that I've been working towards an all white build. I've made progress since the 2018 photo set (which has actually been used in Inked Gaming's marketing), but I'm not quite ready to show that off. I have a few more subtle aesthetic tweaks before I post the updated photos.

Internally, I'm prepping for an ATX build. My wife's rig is OLD, and showing its age in many ways. And after some BSOD issues due to memory (is it the RAM? the CPU IMC?), I've decided that I want us both on the same platform and same form factor so that I can easily swap out parts when needed for testing/troubleshooting. As such, we're both moving to AM4 (B550?) with a Ryzen 5 3600 or 3600X sometime after launch. GPU-wise, my 2060 is fine and she has my old 1060. When the 3060 or AMD equivalent drops, she'll get my 2060 :)

I'm also considering a third build for the living room. If I have the extra budget for it, it will also be a Ryzen 3600/B550 build, but in a Sliger SM550. If that occurs, I'll move the SF450 to that build, and get a SeaSonic, rectifying my one "regret" in the existing build.

If you read this far, you must really love nerdy shit, so thank you!

Is my pc a death trap?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 10:54 AM PDT

About a month ago my mobo was pronounced dead by those who are much more qualified than myself. They weren't able to identify why, just that it's dead.

I'm afraid that if I upgrade to a new mobo, my psu might kill it off. I don't wanna blame the psu because it's gold rated but I also don't wanna throw cash on a new mobo that I might be throwing into a death trap.

What do you guys think? Wait like a year and upgrade everything, or take my chances by upgrading mobo today? I miss playing games :(

Cooler Master 212 Cooler Clearance RAM Issues

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 12:51 PM PDT

Almost done my build, installed the cpu cooler but the, the intake fan won't clear the RAM. I put the fan on the other side but I also flipped the fan inward so it would exhaust. Is this okay?

My PC power cord was melting

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 01:53 AM PDT

Hi! I just don't know how to start because I'm still a little scared but basically my PC power cord was melting and it melted part of my regulator too (I don't know if that's the correct name for that device). Here are some pics.

What happened is that I was playing some overwatch and suddenly I got a very strong burning smell coming from under my desk and started seeing some smoke coming out from the regulator. I rushed to unplug it and saw that the thing was literally melting down where my computer was connected. When I disconnected the power cord to see the damage it was extremely hot and was melting too.

What I wanted to ask you guys is if it was the regulator that went crazy or could it be my PSU? and is it safe to use the computer with the melted power cord or do I have to get another one? Maybe even a new PSU?

    Edit: Some maybe useful data:

    • The PSU is a Corsair CX650M.

    • The side of the cable that's connected to the computer seems completely fine and didn't feel hot.

    • The computer had been working perfectly for about a month since I put it together. I'm kinda scared to turn it on again.

    • As far as I know all the burning smell came from the melting socket and the end of the cable that was connected to it and all the parts of the computer seemed to be working perfectly fine when I turned it off.

    Seeking an SSD recommendation

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 05:20 AM PDT

Building a SFF PC for someone for office workloads. Mostly web-based browsing and Microsoft Office. System will be left running essentially idle for days at a time with probably 90% uptime over the next few years, with roughly 2-4 hours of basic productivity usage each week. I highly value durability/reliability. Has to be an NVME drive due to motherboard compatibility.

Based mainly on pricing, I've narrowed it down to the Intel 660p 1TB vs the ADATA SX8200 960gb.

I don't think the SX8200 speed is that important here, but I wonder if the durability is worth the extra $40 over the 660p, if only for the peace of mind. Looking for a second opinion.

    So, Intel 660p 1TB ($100) or SX8200 960GB ($140)?

    Debating between 2070's

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 01:16 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am planning to get a 2070 today and am stuck between the EVGA XC Gaming Black Edition and the Ultra. Is the difference in performance that drastic other than physical size? Is the cooling worth the extra $60 or so?

I am upgrading from a 970 so the change will be great either way but wanted to hear some thoughts between the two 2070 models.

Either one will fit in my case.

Whats the deal with Nvidia bridges for dual GPUs?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 07:37 AM PDT

I am building a new workstation PC and have started ordering parts. I plan to have dual Nvidia RTX 2080ti cards which is something I've never done before. How do I know how many slots I need on the NV Bridge? Is it as simple as 2-slot for 2 cards? The internet shows people using a bridge to connect 2 cards but it never says which one. Other sources say you need to measure the slots on the motherboard yourself... but I dont have the motherboard yet. I'd really like to order everything asap.

The motherboard I am getting is the MSI Meg X299 which says it supports SLI but doesnt say anything about the slots?

At some point I may upgrade to 4 total GPUs. Does that mean I need multiple SLI bridges?
This PC is going to be a 3D rendering / animation workstation by the way.

    Cheers

Should I get this 1080 and would it even fit my PC?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 12:55 AM PDT

I am really, really bad with PCs but I need an upgrade and I saw a 1080 on sale. I currently have a GTX 1060 3GB and my favourite game cannot run on better settings than "potato settings" and is even struggling on those settings. The 1080 I saw is linked here: https://imgur.com/c6TtuFn I don't know if this is necessary but I'm going to write down my current setup and if possible you guys could tell me if the 1080 would "fit"? I don't know if that's annoying of me to ask but I really need the help

    CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K, 4 x 4.00GHz (4.20Ghz Turbo)

Power supply: CORSAIR Enthusiast Gold Series RM850i

    PC Case: NZXT H440W

    SSD: SanDisk 256GB Z400s

    Motherboard: ASUS B150M PRO GAMING

    GPU: GTX 1060 3GB

    RAM: 2x8GB

All/most my current PC parts are from Denmark/Germany so if I was to buy this 1080 of a UK website, would it still fit or will I need to find it on a German site?

Thank you guys so much in advantage!

PC Build with CPU supporting OpenCL - Intel required?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 12:12 PM PDT

Shot in the dark but worth trying - for context I'm interested in doing dev work with OpenCL but currently have a GIGABYTE Nvidia 1060 3GB, and that doesn't support OpenCL (annoyingly).

I really fancy an AMD 2600X (if ignoring the upcoming 3000-series chips) but am aware it doesn't (officially) support OpenCL either. Does anyone know on whether I could make it work? I've heard you can treat a 2600X as an Intel CPU since it implements SSE instructions but I've not tried that before. Or will I have to use an Intel CPU for my parallelism needs?

    Upgrading my PC

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 01:39 PM PDT

So I built my pc around August of 2018 and there's some problems. I definitely should've waited to build instead of rushing but it's to late now. I was wondering if I needed to make any upgrades or switch to amd for my cpu because I'm on a tight budget. The specs are 1060 3gb, 2x4 gb of 2400 ram, pentium G5400, Asrock b360 pro4, and an EVGA 500 watt power supply. What do I need to upgrade and if I even need to upgrade

    New build not booting, 9700k

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 09:43 AM PDT

    Build Parts:

CPU I-7 9700K Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro Ram: G.Skill 2x8 gigs GPU: Asus Nvidia GTX 1660 Power Supply: Cooler Master 650 watt Gold

Have build completed, attempting to boot for first time and cannot get it to power up. Power supply fan does not spin, no sound, no case fan or cpu cooler spins up. There is however a light on the GPU lit up constantly.

Edit:Have tried retightening cables, ensuring they are in the right spots, ensuring ram is seated correctly and in the correct positions, reseating all components. Switch is on on position on power supply. Board seems to be getting power as unhooking 8 pin to GPU still switches white light on GPU to red light. Board does not seem to have on board power switch, have ensured that power switch wires to front panel are hooked up correctly and with proper polarity.

MSI RTX 2080 'Duke' vs. 'TRIO'

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 03:38 PM PDT

    Hi,

I just returned my Gigabyte 2060 because I want a 2080 for 1440p gamin. I'm choosing between a MSI RTX 2080 Duke vs. Trio.

I like the look of the Duke more than the TRIO (Duke has a more minimalistic look and less RGB). The price difference around here between the 2 cards are 25 euros.

I read that all the aftermarket cards run roughly the same. I saw that the duke card has 2.0 torx fans while the TRIO card has 3.0 torx fans. Also the TRIO has a custom PCB (don't know what the advantage of the custom PCB is, there is no concrete info about that).

Does anyone have one of these cards, or what is your opinion (temps, noise etc.)? Are there reasons for choosing the TRIO over the Duke?

    Thanks!!

    Newly built pc randomly reboots

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 03:28 PM PDT

Hi, this is my first time building a pc. After I built it everything were fine in maybe two/three weeks. But today, when I play games, it randomly reboots and shows no error message. (But at the time writing, the pc is on but no output is coming to my screen). I haven't done any updates or any changes that caused this, it just randomly happened today and it has maybe rebooted 3-4 times this day only. Any suggestions on what this can be and how I can fix it? All the parts are new and have warranty. Too me this sounds like a PSU problem but this is my first time building and my knowledge of computers is limited. Plz help

    FX 8300 Overheating

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 08:29 AM PDT

So I recently found out that my pc is thermal throttling the cpu, Not too long ago I replaced the heatsink and fan cause the fan died on me and I have noticed games running like crap, after some investigation I found that my cpu is idling in like the 30's and reaching almost 70c as soon as it's under a decent load.

I just tried replacing the thermal paste which had little too no effect.

I was curious if anyone had any suggestions as too what I should try next and if I should replace my heatsink, I'm using a cheap Rosewill Rocc-16002 and I honestly think it's probably just not cutting the mustard, But I can't imagine it's THAT bad of a heatsink.
