This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

TIFU, but was taught a valuable lesson in not rushing

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 10:30 AM PDT

Ive probably done the easiest thing to mess up when it comes to PC building. https://i.imgur.com/QLeuAUC.png
Not only did i bend a pin on my brand new ASUS Z370-E board, but that pin broke off. Not entirely sure how i did, since im 100%positive i was placing it in there nice and slow, but i didnt inspect to see if the pins were broken before i placed the CPU in the socket. No only that, and ill admit this through my own embarrasment, i put the Mobo in before anything else. No amount of magnifying glass plus ifixit tools could save that motherboard and let the CPU post.
I let my excitement get the better of me, and rushed to the point of critical failure, putting me back another month in my build. Ive got a rather nice Gigabyte Z370 board now, ill be installing it tomorrow along with the rest of my components.

Real Talk, how reliable are Youtube only benchmark channels?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:45 AM PDT

Channels like Testing Games, For Gamers, TechEpiphany, Santiago Santiago., Wolfgang and many more. They seem to test way more games at way more settings that any of the big reviewers. Most of them also show footage of their benchmark runs. But has anyone ever verified whether their results are trust-worthy?

BuildReady: Ready to buy, looking for some confirmation.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 11:08 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Post-edit: It's all ordered!!! =D Now we wait!

Long post but the crux is just the following paragraph and the partslist.

I am building our lab's computer and am just looking for someone to look over the build and say that it should be fine before I submit it to purchasing before the end of the day (<3 hours). I posted to /r/buildapcforme (original post copied below) for initial guidance and have selected parts based on the suggestions and conversations. I am uncertain of the required power of the PSU given the parts and am curious if the system would benefit from 3200MHz ram for $75 more. (Edit: Also, do I need to buy case fans?) This is what I have come up with so far:

    ORIGINAL POST

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.

    • This is going to be a lab computer bought with grant money that expires. As the resident broke computer enthusiast (I just browse and dream), I was tasked with spec'ing and building the desktop to get the best bang for our buck. We have a $2-2.5k budget for a workstation that we are hoping will last a long time (future proofing! lol). The current use case will be Phantom Camera Control (PCC) processing (high speed camera footage of lab experiments) which requires a fast multi-core CPU and a good amount of RAM for processing, then fast SSDs for OS and quick storage, and beefy HDDs for long-term storage. We'll also use it for computational fluid models (Ansys) and other FEM computations (Matlab). No current plans for any machine learning nor gaming :P

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?

    • Aiming for $2k with wiggle room. I was told an extra $500 would not be a problem.

When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.

    • The money is use-it-or-lose by June (edit: but the cameras are arriving next week) so we want to use it the best we can to help future lab members. We have to have the department do the purchases so I'll keep an eye on /r/buildapcsales and then meander on over to the purchasing lady if I see something to pull the trigger on. The Phantom cameras have been ordered so having it ready when they and the rest of the experiment are all set up would be great. That being the case, I guess I'm looking for general specs rather than particular brands which would allow me to make variations as appropriate e.g. 64GB 3200MHz ddr4 ram vs "2x G.Skill - Trident Z 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory". Another example would be things like minimum 750W PSU with at least G2 rating (idk what exactly that means). Explanations would be grand!

What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (Tower/OS/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc)

    • Entirety of the tower (no cd drive and no RGB unless it's cheaper...).
    • Generic monitor(s) 60Hz is fine, don't care about response time and colors don't have to be amazing, big and pixel-y, I can keep an eye out for sales.
    • Cheapest legal windows OS (see below).

Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?

    • Michigan, USA! Microcenter is 1.5 hours away so assuming one can order online and then go pick it up on the weekend, that's fine... if it's worth it!

If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.

    • Generic mouse and keyboard. Nothing fancy. The IT department has lots of spares.

Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?

    • Not really. Gotta make this last as long as possible. So the PSU doesn't need to account for it.

Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)

    • Most info in opening paragraph.
    • Currently the only need I can think of for a GPU is the ports and potential GPU acceleration(?). I can personally claim potential free games so nobody gets distracted in the lab ;)
    • Would RAID be useful for the SSDs? We have network backups for backing up the HDDs which should be beefy.

Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-tower/full-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?

    • No size or color requirements and minimal/no RGB unless it is cheaper/better. As long as it can fit all the components and has sufficient cooling, any case should do.

Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?

    • The cheapest legal copy of windows as my college's IT department will replace it with their enterprise Windows OS, but it needs to already have a Windows OS on it.

    Extra info or particulars:

    • I found this thread for a similar spec build which may be a good starting point. Here is the pcpartpicker list of what I have so far. It still needs the storage SSDs and HDDs and probably should have a new GPU. Idk about fans. Idk if such a robust PSU is needed.
    • Extra money can be spent on other lab equipment. Savings are nice, other things can just be bought at the lowest available price at the time.
    • I have never built a PC from scratch but I have installed more RAM and SSDs on both my laptop and desktop. I have even upgraded my CPU on my laptop with only 2 screws leftover when it was all put back together!

Thanks for being the best community ever! I'm happy to answer any questions I can.

    First PC build...Help Needed

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 06:26 AM PDT

Hi, this is my first time building a Gaming PC. I am currently a 1st year computer science student in University of Limerick in Ireland. I am building this PC mainly for gaming but also partially for college. I am buying most of the parts off Amazon UK. The colour scheme i'm going for is white and black with some RGB also. This will run Windows OS off the m.2.I have a budget of around €1300. I have listed the the specs of the build below. Any suggestions are welcome.

Specs: *Corsair CP-9020102-UK CX550M 550 W *Seagate Barracuda 7200 Desktop 1 TB Hard Drive *ASUS X470 PRIME X470-PRO Motherboard - White *Western Digital WDS240G2G0B WD 240 GB Internal SSD M.2 SATA, Green *Corsair CMK16GX4M2D3000C16W Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3000 White *ASUS NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB White Graphics Card (DUAL-GTX1070-O8G) *Corsair Carbide Series 275R Tempered Glass Mid-Tower ATX Gaming Case - White *AMD YD270XBGAFBOX Ryzen 7 2700X Processor with Wraith Prism RGB LED Cooler

-Also i'm using ARCTIC MX-4 for my thermal paste-

Need help choosing an additional RAM for my PC

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 12:45 AM PDT

I don't know if this is the right place to post this and I apologize if this sounds like a stupid question...

These are my motherboard and ram specs from CPU-Z:

    1. motherboard specs

    2. current memory specs

This is the motherboard I am using

I want to install an additional 4GB ddr3 RAM

Will something like Hynix 4GB PC3-12800 DDR3-1600MHz be suitable? What specs should I consider while buying an additional RAM for my current system?

    Thanks

First Build in ~10 Years (AMD AM4, Ryzen 2600X, Define R6)

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 06:05 AM PDT

Hello, Reddit! Long time lurker, first time poster here. I'm in the process of finalizing my new PC build this weekend, and I wanted to check in and see if everything in this list made sense before I went out buying the remaining components.

I already own the Case, the 4 Case Fans, the CPU, and oddly the Wireless/BT card. I was planning on heading down to my local Micro Center and/or Frys here in Houston either this afternoon/evening or over the weekend and buying the remainder. Any obvious mistakes, or errors that I should look out for? I think I may have gone for too big of a power supply, but I wanted to go for more power as I would like to turn this build into a 3rd Gen Ryzen once they are out or a few months after. I've also got 4x8 RAM on there, which might be a not-good amount for Ryzen 2600x. Should I just stick with 2x8 GB for now instead and potentially upgrade to 4x8 later?

I was originally planning on waiting until third gen Ryzen released, but I've got the itch to build and you know how hard that is to resist! I also already have an optical drive and a hdd, but I wasn't sure what the branding was for them and didn't include them.

Now I'm sure some folks have probably noticed there isn't much/any RGB on this build, I'm a little old school when it comes to how I like my computers. I totally respect that other folks love the RGB stuff, but I prefer a nice closed case without much/any lighting.

I'm planning on setting up the case with the case fans mostly as they are normally in the standard layout for the Fractal Design Define R6, with the addition of one additional fan on the bottom front as I've seen some other folks do over the years with good success. I'm a big fan of air-cooling over water cooling, in general, which might sound strange to folks but I've always admired the instant heat removal capabilities of a good air cooler vs the potential heat saturation and leakages that can happen with some water cooled systems (not as common these days, though!).

Anyhow, sorry for how wordy this post is. I'm mainly hoping this post goes through right and that I haven't messed anything up. Thank you!

Trying to make the switch from Console to PC. Let me know what you guys think

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 02:35 PM PDT

As the title suggests I am trying to make the switch from console to PC. I would like to include a monitor in the budget. Thanks for all the help upfront.

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Gaming/ Light work. Mainly gaming.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Would like to play at 60+ FPS, hopefully high-ultra settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $1,750

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    Question regarding RTX series cards

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:01 AM PDT

I recently replaced my 1060 with a 2060, it's nice but it's a bit louder than my 1060 was and I didn't change anything like screen resolution. The fans seem to kick up every time a map loads or something, then turn back off. I understand the fans don't turn on until it hits 60 degrees, but why did my GTX card not do this as frequently as my 2060? Both are made by MSI.

Would setting a fan curve help this? What would you guys recommend? Is anyone else having this issue?

Need some advice to build a desktop after a longtime with a potato

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 09:56 AM PDT

I don't have access to a pc (and I won't for some time) so this post aint gonna be looking pretty or with good paragraphs, also I can't post pcpart links.

I wanna build a gaming desktop with some slight video editing.

My core parts will be Sapphire RX580 8gb ,16Gb g.skill ddr4 ram, Ryzen 7 1700 and a 750 psu. Where I need your help is in the motherboard and if there is something that I should change. I will be building this in late April probably except certain circumstances, which I will build in summer. I also wanna ask if it is more worthy budget wise to wait for summer but there will probably be some sales in Easter so I dunno. Thanks for the help.

    Is this build okay?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 01:22 PM PDT

PC recently died, so looking to replace some parts: motherboard, CPU, RAM and SSD.

I bought a corsair VS 650 as I suspected it may have been the PSU which failed on the old PC, after testing it wasn't the problem.

New parts I plan on buying:

    CPU Ryzen 5 2600 https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07B41WS48/ref=ox_sc_act_image_5?smid=A2XOC34F7KPTGN&psc=1

    RAM https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07B2Y1N8B/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1

    Motherboard https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07FQ9ZJD9/ref=ox_sc_act_image_4?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1

    SSD https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01F9G46Q8/ref=ox_sc_act_image_3?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&psc=1

Will use the VS 650 I brought for the PSU, and I have a GTX 1060 which I will re-use for the GPU.

Would this be okay for a build, can't really afford much better atm. It's a bad time for my old rig to die.

    Ryzen 5 for virtualization

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 03:03 AM PDT

    Hi

I need a PC for surfing, downloading, maybe playing with Diablo 3, streaming/watching video (sometimes 4K) on my smart TV, running max 2 VMs. VMs will need not much RAM, but I'm interesting if the CPU is good for virtualization.

So thats all, which build would you go with?

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/MLwCYT

    or

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/TLFYjy (here the VGA is 4GB DDR5, but I could not find it on partpicker)

    Any concerns about the build?

    Thank you guys!

Am i bending the cable too much?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 02:36 PM PDT

I have been playing on this PC for about 2 weeks now and I don't see any weird signs, I was wondering if the position of the CPU cable is safe

    http://imgur.com/gallery/sNVt2Ua

Edit: there is also no tension for both the cable and the motherboard connector

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 02:34 PM PDT
