This is why you should repaste your gaming laptop

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 06:24 AM PST

After about a year of owning this laptop all of the sudden I got massive FPS drops while playing games and the fans were running faster than usual. I checked a few different programs and I noticed the temps was hitting 95 C and the CPU was throttling.

I opened the laptop and removed the heatsink and this is what I found..

As you can see there was probably way to much CPU and GPU paste that had been toasted. After a quick repaste my temps dropped to around 73 C while gaming and I don't suffer from any thermal throttling anymore. It was a shame that I couldn't hand in the laptop to the store I bought it from but there was no warranty left since I had opened up the laptop myself and changed the SSD.

Asus Zenbook 14 ultra slim or...?

I'm looking at this laptop and it seems to have most of what I'm looking for. I'm a bit bothered by the glossy screen though, and wondering if there are any other options with similar design?

    Thanks!

14" quality laptop with light GPU under $900 (that's not the Acer Swift 3)?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 11:55 AM PST

I don't need to play games from 2016 and onward, I just want to play Rocket League and Insurgency without worries. I got a Lenovo Y40-70 in 2014 for 1000USD and it's showing it's age. Surprisingly with this unknown-to-me GPU (AMD RADEON R9 M275) I can play the games I want, although not at the highest graphics.

I just want a 2018/2019 laptop that's equal to this Lenovo, I really don't want a 15" or have to shell out over $900 for something my 2014 laptop can already do, I don't need nor want an overpowered MSI or a super premium XPS/Huawei, I'm going mad trying to find this laptop

cant pick between the macbook pro (13 inch) and the microsoft surface book 2 (13.5 inch)

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 07:33 AM PST

Hey, I need some help deciding between these two laptops. I am looking at the base models for both devices. I am currently a student so that is the most important thing for me when considering the two. I have never owned an Apple laptop before so I don't know much about making the switch. I like the fact that the Surface Book 2 is detachable and a has touch screen input but I don't know if that is a valid trade off for the Macbook. I would most likely use the device for the next 3-4 years so durability is important aswell. They are really similar in price which is making this decision really hard for me. Any advice would be helpful, Thank you!

trying to buy my first laptop, yet all the choices is really confusing me.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 11:32 PM PST

with being new to buying i'm pretty uneducated in all the tech language and what means what, any help or suggestions are appreciated!

All I really need out of a laptop is for it to be $350-ish USD (the cheaper the better though), able to run adobe flash player, and just overall average in everything. i don't really care about battery life. i'd like it to be small too and not touchscreen. thats all i need! any help would be appreciated :)

Looking for a Reliable and Budget Laptop to Buy for someone in poland

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 10:00 AM PST

Hello everyone and happy Saturday. As the title states, I'm in Canada and have family in Poland who could use a laptop to help them with basic daily tasks: email, internet, movies, business software but the prices on their end are quite higher than where I live.

I was wondering what would be a good option of a purchase for a basic needs laptop in this case? I'm also curious if it would be a smarter idea to buy it via a Canadian website but ship it directly to my family?

My other option is that I will be traveling to Poland in the Spring and could take it with me, but that obviously would not be ideal for the extra weight and worry.

    Appreciate all of your input!

Thinking about getting a laptop, don't know where to start.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 12:54 PM PST

I want something that can do some very light gaming (older games and less demanding games, not much of a GPU needed) and one that could run some programs like word, PowerPoint etc. (I doubt I need to mention that part though as if it can game it can do that). It MUST be 1080p, no compromises (my desktop ruined everything worse then it for me). I would prefer to buy new and around 500 dollars or less.

Edit: ive looked on Newegg and found nothing, so I don't know if there even IS one that fits my budget.

Lenovo Y530 - yea or nay?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 08:58 AM PST

I'm in need of a new laptop, and have decided to upgrade to a low-end gaming machine ($1-1.5k CAD range). I've been eyeing the Lenovo Y530 — looks like the manufacturer website has a version with an SSHD and 1050Ti graphics that falls within my budget after discounts. Anyone have experience with this laptop, especially in terms of build quality? I'm a bit leery of Lenovo right now; I'm replacing my Flex 3 because its motherboard bit the dust after only 3 years. The specs on the Y530 are certainly appealing though.

Barring that, I'll throw in my r/SuggestALaptop form if you have any other recommendations.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Budget: ~$1500 CAD (Canada)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs, though decent battery life is important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly, as I travel quite a bit. I'm willing to sacrifice some specs for weight.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. No smaller than 15", as I need a NUM pad.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Casual gaming, mostly. It will be a work machine as well, but the software I use isn't particularly demanding.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No Man's Sky, Skyrim SE, indie games at 1080p and medium settings (off the top of my head, Sunless Seas/Skies and Ori and the Blind Forest)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As mentioned above, a NUM pad is a must for work. Generous Shift and Enter keys would be nice. Hybrid hard drive (SSHD) a huge plus, though the SSD portion doesn't have to be massive - it'll mostly be for booting the OS and core programs.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I need something fairly quickly, as my current computer (Lenovo Flex 3) is dead. Also, no Intel graphics cards - made the mistake of buying No Man's Sky just before launch without realizing it wasn't compatible with Intel cards, and I'd like to be able to play the thing at some point.

    Laptops for College

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 06:07 AM PST

I'm heading to college in the fall and would like to get a laptop soon. I'd mainly be using it for notes and classwork and media consumption. My budget is about $1,000, but it's not necessarily a strict one. From what I've looked at in person and online, I prefer smaller sizes (13 in. has been my favorite), non-touch screen, and ultrabooks.

I looked at the Dell XPS 13 and was drawn to the thin bezels and overall build. However, a lot of people who have had one complain about the same quality issues. Fan noises, speakers crackling, and flaws in the chassis. Also, I'm not sure if the specs are really good enough for the price.

I've also looked at the Asus Zenbook 13. Again, I like the screen and thin bezels. The numpad in the touchpad is a cool feature, but I don't think I would be using it that much. I've heard that the fans are a bit loud and that it gets fairly warm.

What are your opinions on these two laptops, and are there any others I should look into?

    Trade in laptop

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 08:08 AM PST

Guys, I need some advice whether if I should ring up HP to trade in my laptop for a thin and light but the current laptop I have I bought it recently in August 2018.

My current laptop is HP Omen 2018 with a 6 core processor and 1070Mq. I bought the HP Omen due to doing Virtualization project but now I am in degree and the current laptop drains the battery really fast and I am considering the late 2018 HP Spectre x360 Gem cut.

    Thank you.

    Dell G5 or....

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 07:20 AM PST

I'm looking for a laptop in the <$850 range to use for light gaming (WoW), school, and occasionally work (Autocad). I need a decent graphics card, 16 gb RAM (can upgrade on my own if needed), and a 1 TB hard drive to sync work Dropbox with.

I really need a bargain, so if it has an extra hard rive slot, I could add the SSD myself.

    Here's what I've ordered: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Dell-G5-Gaming-Laptop-15-6-Full-HD-Intel-Core-i7-8750H-NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1050-Ti-4GB-1TB-HDD-128GB-SSD-Storage-8GB-RAM-G5587-7139BLK-PUS/886685763

Is this a good deal for the money? I plan to buy another 8GB of ram to add to it.

All that said, IF someone knows of a better deal (or a problem with what I've bought), I'll return this once it arrives and order something else. Thanks for any help :)

    HDD swap

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 03:27 AM PST

    Hello all,

I have what I'm sure is a simple question, but I'm not extremely tech savvy. My work laptop is a Panasonic toughbook CF-C2 with windows 10 pro installed, recently the screen started getting vertical lines in it, and while it still works it's a major annoyance.

My question is this, is the OS completely stored on the hard drive? I found a working "parts" laptop on eBay for like $70 that is only missing a battery and hard drive, can I just pull the hard drive out and swap it into the new one and be good to go since both the hard drive and battery are quick removable?

    Any help is appreciated

    Thanks!

Laptop - to ditch, or not to ditch. That is the question.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 12:57 AM PST

    I currently have a HP Pavillion 15 - Intel i7-5500U CPU @ 2.4GHz, 8gb ram, Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500, Realtek High Definition Audio and a retrofitted 250GB SSD.

I feel like these specs don't really warrant me getting a new machine just yet (it's a couple of years old) but it's running like an absolute dog (and more like an overweight pug than a greyhound :P). High CPU usage that freezes things constantly (often it's Chrome, or Antimalware Service Executable doing the damage, according to Task Manager - and yeah, I've tried all the online guides to adjust that).

When I try to play video clips, it regularly freezes, or slows/breaks up/slurs the audio. I multitask a lot with my job and often have lots of windows open. I also have a lot of autosyncing going on with cloud services.

All my drivers are up to date, and I've run malware checkers etc - all fine.

    So my questions are

    1. If it should be doing all these tasks with its current specs, any idea of stuff I should be looking at to improve performance?
    2. Or is it a case of crappy on board audio/video? Is it possible to get more powerful graphics or audio cards retrofitted in HP Pavillions? What would you recommend?
    3. If not, anyone got a recommendation for a decent machine that will deal with multitasking, some video/photo editing and rendering and constant cloud syncing?

Loud laptop fan noise after hard disk change

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 02:59 AM PST

I've had this dell inspiron 3521 for about 3 years now...Not the greatest among laptops but i don't game or do any hard work on this...

The only problems I've had with this laptop prior to this was the screen battery damage ( changed the battery and charger like 3 times)...

but about two months ago the laptop stopped booting up so i took it to a computer shop... They told me that my Hard drive got damaged and charged me for a new one ( lost all my data ).....

about a month later after this incident, one day my laptop started making this loud fan whirring noise for no reason...The noise starts when my device boots and its a little quieter when the laptop is idling ( rarely no noise )...Its really loud when using chrome...I was broke af and have used it like this ever since....The noise still persists and i think it is coming form the cpu fan..The hard disk some times shows 100% in task manager when the sound is really high...

Should i get this thing repaired or just let it be....I don't think that I have noticed any performance issues ( maybe slightly but thats about it )

Any idea whats going on and possible fixes?

Looking for a Laptop to DJ with (MacBook Pro Alternatives)

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 11:05 PM PST

I'm a full time DJ and I'm looking to get a laptop to DJ with as I'm currently using cd's, I'm really not a fan of MacOS so I'm looking for something that runs windows but has good build quality like MacBooks & better specs etc

Serato DJ Pro is the only software I'll be using so no graphics card needed & this also rules out the Dell XPS as there is a couple of known issues with Serato & the Dell XPS Line (ejecting usb crashes the software etc)
