My thoughts on the Huawei Matebook X PRO after two weeks of usage.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 04:30 AM PST

    Specs :

    • CPU i5 8250
    • GPU mx150
    • 8 GB ram
    • 256 GB storage

Build Quality : Is very good, the laptop feels very premium and sturdy with nothing of note that is negative. My model does have the slightest of trackpad rattle that you hear other people talking about but it's not something that I bother about.

Thermals : I'm using Throttlestop to undervolt the CPU and currently I'm running with this configuration, I haven't tried undervolting more since this is running stable and I don't really feel the need to go any lower. With this configuration I get around 31 C in idle and around 40 C when I'm browsing reddit, watching youtube, stuff like that.

    Throttlestop configuration :

    • Speed shift – EPP checked
    • BD PROCHOT checked
    • SpeedStep checked
    • C1E checked
    • CPU Core -170.9 mV
    • Intel GPU -30.3 mV
    • CPU Cache -80.1 mV

Fans : When you push the machine they will come on but they aren't loud in my opinion(comparing to gaming laptops) but after I undervolted the CPU normal browsing and watching netflix the computer remains silent all the time.

Coilwhine : My machine does have a little coilwhine and so has every other laptop I have ever owned. This one I need to hold my ear against the keyboard to hear it so it's not something that is disturbing. If you are the type of person that enjoys coilwhine I suggest you buy a Dell XPS 13, those machines are capable of singing really loud.

Screen : I was a little skeptical about the aspect ratio at first but now I really like it, the screen is beautiful to look at, yes you do get black bars when watching movies but it's not something that I think about. Screen does go very bright but I don't think this machine is a good match to be using outdoors in sunlight because it is a glossy touch display so it does produce a lot more glare than a regular matte display.

Keyboard : It's pretty pleasant to type on, it's not a Thinkpad keyboard but it is still pretty good, don't think anyone would say it's a bad keyboard, it is backlit but it turns off after 20 seconds since you last pressed a key so you have to press a key again to light it back up. I guess it's to save battery but I think some people will find it a bit annoying, I don't mind it I actually like it.

Webcam : A bad webcam that you can hide away. I've never used it and probably never will so I don't have much to say about it.

Speakers : I don't use it very often but it's definitely better than your average laptop.

Hopefully this little review helps someone with their next purchase decision, feel free to ask any questions or if you want me to perform some benchmark test or the like.

    Laptop Suggestion: Indesign /Photoshop /Lightroom - Budget 1200-1600

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 09:13 AM PST

Hey Gang! I need a new laptop. I was debating on getting a macbook pro but I figured a windows machine with the same or better specs would be cheaper. The only things I will be doing is indesign / photoshop / and lightroom (Adobe suite). I do edit large file (200mb 48 bit tiffs). But I dont do any panoramics, hdrs, etc.

What is important: -Screen! I need a screen that is beautiful, accurate, sharp, and good for editing -15 Inch seems like the sweet spot size wise -Thin and Light - this thing is going everywhere with me -Quad Core -16gb Ram -SSD Drive

Can you give me some recommendations? I have been out of the technology world for 5 years and there are to many options to go through.

    Thank you!

    Beware of Lenovo Customer Service

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 10:30 AM PST

TLDR: This is my 3 week experience trying to give Lenovo my money in order to buy a laptop. This process has been completely frustrating.

Order 1 - 2/18/2018: Did my research here and on youtube, and found that Lenovo Legion Y740 is the best fit for me. Extra plus, they were going to have a President's Day sale. Talked to an agent who applied the sales price to my quote, and my order is in. so far so good.

Order 2 - 2/19/2018. Unfortunately, first order is cancelled because I shipped to my mail service (which is counted as a PO BOX in Lenovo's system), new order is created. Unfortunately, a mistake is made on my new shipping address, but cannot be corrected until the package ships. In the meantime, order 2 is suppose to ship 2/25/2018 and be delivered 3/5/2018.

Then Order 2 is listed delayed until April, even though all advertising on Lenovo's site said it would ship in 5-7 days. Lenovo CSRs spend the next day and a half giving me different information. One CSR (Kirstie Anne) said that she check with their focal team and get back to me, she never did. Another CSR (Reymark R) tells me that it would ship 2/27. Finally, a third CSR (Jonathan T) finally tells me that the order has been delayed until 3/31.

Order 3 - 2/27/2018 - I cancel order 2 and decide to order a pre-build Y740 iron gray. It was advertised to ship on the same business day. The sales agent draws up the order form, but misspells my shipping and billing address. I catch this within 5 minutes.

Order 4 - 2/27/2018 - I cancel order 3 and work with another salesperson, who draws up order #4. This time, the billing address is correctly listed (so i thought) but the shipping address is now wrong (due to a bug in Lenovo's system). Sales person cannot correct it, but says he will fix it when it ships out.

Order 4 does not ship the same business day as advertised. Instead, after 2 days of calls, it ships 2/29/2018. It's still in transit somewhere. Lenovo gives me a $110 discount for the mess. Lenovo would not fix the wrong address, and I had to call UPS on my own to sort it out.

Today, Lenovo informs me that my payment did not go through. I review my latest order confirmation and it looks like my name on the billing address is spelled incorrectly. So while the shipment is in transit, I am not charged. I read online that this apparently happens and Lenovo will not call you, instead, opting to choose to send a collections agency after the fact.

I take the initiative and call lenovo customer service, who directs me to call accounts receiveable (AR). Accounts receivable does not pick up their phone. I am disconnected after a cycle of their wait music. I spent another hour on the phone with another CSR who tries to connect me to AR in person. He literally has to call them the same way I would. instead of actually connecting me to AR, he places another pending charge on my card, hoping it will get me off the phone. I request to speak to a supervisor, he says his supervisors are busy. Finally, after an hour, he leaves me indefinitely on hold.

I am at my wits end here, and I haven't even received the laptop. Please beware of Lenovo. maybe their laptops are great, but their customer service is horrendous.

Buying a laptop for graduate school.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 02:24 PM PST

    Hi,

I need a laptop I can use for school. Macbook Pro was my last laptop, so let me know if there's an affordable Macbook I can buy, (even if it's not the fastest or anything like that.) If there's a nice PC that I can get, ($600-700). I'm really sorry for the bother, I'm just slightly overwhelmed with all of the choices and I've never bought a laptop for myself.

The first click on Amazon was a Macbook Air, $1050, 13-inch Retina display, 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5. Is that something I should invest in?

Also, my friend pointed me to a lenovo Chromebook, for $250. Not sure if that's something I should look into.

    Lenovo Y740 reviewed by notebookcheck

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 09:03 AM PST

Turns out to be a really nice 17 inch gaming laptop actually. Those cinebench scores are excellent and it's not too loud either. Has gsync and 144hz screen too.

Poor battery time and some classic screen bleed as negatives.

    Laptop missing hard drive

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 12:45 PM PST

So I got a HP Pavilion g7 from a friend. I couldn't get it to boot up so I took it apart and someone took the hard drive out. What is my best option to get it working. Should I just buy a compatible one of Amazon? I was going to buy an internal one but would a ssd be better? Will that ever work without an internal one too? Also will I be able to install windows without having to download or buy a new copy of windows? It has a windows 8 sticker on it so assuming that is what version was on it before. Thank you for any help.

    Cant decide

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 11:41 AM PST

Narrowed my choices to these 3:

    Razer Blade 15: World's Smallest 15.6" Gaming Laptop - 144Hz Full HD Thin Bezel - 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8750H 6 Core - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q - 16GB RAM - 512GB SSD - Windows 10 - CNC Aluminum https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D39HTMS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_gvyECbDNST478

MSI PS63 Modern-085 15.6" Ultra Portable Creative Laptop NVIDIA GTX 1050 4G Max-Q, Intel Core i7-8565U, 16GB, 512GB NVMe SSD, White Backlit KB, Win 10 Pro, Ash Grey w/ Blue Diamond Cut https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NF1CQZC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_dwyECb4ZWNHTB

Dell XPS 9570 Laptop 15.6" FHD, 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8750H CPU, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, GeForce GTX 1050Ti, Thin bzl 400 Nits Display, Silver, Windows 10 Home - XPS9570-7996SLV-PUS, Gaming Capable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CTKVGQ5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_JsyECbMZQANH6

I would use these laptops for college and some gaming nothing too intensive only intensive is overwatch and even then i usually play for about 45min to an hour. Other than gaming there isnt anything intensive id be using it for as of now. I want to like the razer blade but the qc issues are pushing me away. Between the PS63 and XPS15 its pretty much the same the only differences i see that matter to me are the camera placement, battery, screen brightness. It all comes down to others experience while they use it and if they can last me a few years.

I keep hearing about the Thinkpad e485, is it really that good?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 11:28 AM PST

So I have heard people (consumers on forums) say that they are extremely pleased with their E485s, but not much in the way of 'professional' reviews.

I am in the laptop search and it was recommended for me, but I am slightly skeptical.

I need a laptop as an alternative for my tower. So I don't need a top of the line laptop, since any high intensity productivity or gaming will be done on my desktop.

    Zenbook Ergo-lift on the lap?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 10:53 AM PST

I've been considering an ASUS Zenbook for a while now and I've seen the one that has a ergo lift hinge; however, I've noticed it basically is a ledge that protrudes from the otherwise smooth surface of the bottom of the laptop. I'm not sure if this would somehow cut into my lap while using it and cause discomfort? Has anyone here used the Zenbook enough to give some insight on this? Thanks!

Acer Helios 300 vs Dell G7

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 07:37 PM PST

I am looking for a laptop with a GTX 1060, 120 HZ+ refresh rate and decent price and came across these two laptops.

With the Helios, I keep coming across thermal and overheating issues. Multiple solutions, with liquid metal, replace thermal paste, undervolting the cpu etc. Anyone with a Helios if they could chime in with their experiences.

Now the G7 doesn't have a 144hz display, but it seems easy enough for around $70 to upgrade the 60hz to a 120hZ.

Key difference then is that the Helios has the GTX 1060 and not the 1060 max q, which I understand performs slightly worse than the full size 1060. And it seems the G7 is a little more expensive, but Dell does make quality products.

So, any tips and suggestions regarding both laptops, would be much appreciated.

Deciding between the Gram 14 and Xps 13 i7. Struggling to decide if its worth so much more money to buy the top of the line for the 16gb RAM. Heard that both the SSD are upgradeable. But by doing so would the warranty be voided?

is there any database that contains information about which component (with it's manufacturer part no.) is compatible with which models? Free and paid are good.

Also, if this is not appropriate for this subreddit, where can I ask that question?
