Confused! MSI. ASUS. Razer. Gigabyte. 15inch

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 01:41 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £2500. Would rather pay around £2k but don't want major tech regret in years.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Mostly used on power supply. Do travel so lightweight is key. No 2 in 1.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important but not everything. Deffo don't want a brick.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 as I travel.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Deffo gaming. RTS/FPS. Busy job so pick up and play for an hour or two a week. Would like to edit and manage photos so more than 1TB of storage. But have a NAS so can manage storage on there and get away with a faster SSD.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? High frame rates. Only reason to move from Mac is gaming so might as well do it properly but don't need max settings ie 2080 etc

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Travel lots so needs to be sturdy. No touch screen. Would like to be able to use windows hello - better than typing super long passwords.

144Hz seems to be the way to go.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Essentially can pay what I need to but head won't let me pay above 2.5k. Looking to balance bang for buck and performance. Unsure if 2060 a better card than 2070 in real use or if 8GB vs 6GB will make a big difference. Technical enough to figure out how to undervolt if need be. Unsure of throttling an issue for my kind of use. Unsure of retailer with best customer service to buy from - understand buying direct not the best. Looked at blade, Zephyrus, slim MSI.

Is it worth it to buy an expensive used laptop over a moderately priced new one?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 01:07 PM PDT

Hi there. I'm looking into selling my rig (1070, i7 6700k, 16 gb ram,) and wanted to spend the money on something about as powerful, but much more portable. Right now I have my eyes on a used MSI GS65 Stealth, but was wondering if it would be a smarter idea to get a used laptop that was less powerful due to the lack of risk for getting a bad product. I would be doing moderate gaming (League, Apex, Sekiro) on it so I would be looking for something decently powerful. All advice is welcomed. Thanks!

Instead of having the laptop delivered, is there any way I can just drive to a store or assembly location and pick it up directly?

No idea where to start search, Laptop for university and everyday life. Thanks in advance!

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 04:03 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Germany, Willing to pay about 1000 €. If there is a little more expensive Laptop which fits my requirements perfectly I would be willing to pay a bit more.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?

Most important would be battery life. During exams it may be possible that it has to last for 6-8 hours, while occasionally watching a video and having plenty browser tabs open. 2-in-1-Laptop would also be convenient, but I heard that raises the price a lot. Touch

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not really important. As is want around 15" Screen, I doubt I will be too heavy or thick for me.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size?

    Around 14" or 15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No editing, but I might use CAD (Siemens NX), MATLAB or Python. I'd also like to be able to do a bit of gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

No certain games. It doesn't need to be the newest games. if they came out a few years ago and I can play on average settings that's enough. ALSO I'd like to use Emulators, if it can run a Wii U or PS3 Emulators, it would be more than enough.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I want a Laptop which will last me a long time, as in 5 to 7 years. Battery life will obviously shorten over the years, so if it is possible to get it replaced that would be perfect. But I guess that's possible for every laptop, right?).

    2 or 3 USB-Ports would be nice.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I don't expect that all requirements are able to be met in my price range, but I guess you know the best where I have to make cutbacks. Thanks in Advance!

Confused with Huawei Matebook D and Lenovo Thinkpad E490

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 01:49 AM PDT

Hey Redditors, I am confused with Huawei Matebook D and Lenovo Thinkpad E490

    Huawei Matebook D Specs here
    https://rdveikals.lv/products/lv/150/169812/sort/1/filter/0_0_0_0/MateBook-D-15.6-FHD-IPS-i5-8250U-8GB-1TB-128SSD-MX150-EN-W10-Gray.html

    THInkpad E490 Specs Here
    https://rdveikals.lv/products/lv/150/181518/sort/1/filter/0_0_0_0/ThinkPad-E490-14-FHD-IPS-i5-8265U-8GB-1TB-EN-W10Pro-Black.html

Things which attracts me in Huawei is the graphics and HDD + SDD option and better battery as it says plus cheaper than thinkpad e490. But comparing Huawei with Thinkpads build quality, long lasting performance, Service centres available and Brand makes me not to go for Huawei.

Things in Thinkpad I like are the build quality, solid keyboard and Battery ( Not sure which of these two has the long lasting batteries).

Could some body find me which one has better battery performance.

So put together, this confuses me which one to go.

Any incoming help appreciated. Thanks a ton.

Looking for a laptop from $700-1000 for traveling/ gaming/ videos

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 06:17 PM PDT

Trying this again as I received no replies last time I posted a few days ago. I'd like to find one in the next few days, as I'll be leaving for a while very soon and id like to get it set up before I go.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 max. Less would be better off course. USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. My main concern is toughness. I'll be deploying soon and want something that can take a bit of rough traveling. Best value for money. It most likely will be plugged in often so super long battery isn't a make or break option.

      • How important is weight and thinness to you? Sturdy over pretty. I want something that will last 7 years like my last one. It didn't do so hot these last few years, but it still works. * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
      • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll probably play some pretty basic games, but wouldn't mind the ability to play better ones if I choose to. I pretty much only play old school RuneScape lol.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? It's old school RS. I could probably run that on a Samsung smart fridge. I just want overall future-proof specs to last about 5 years or so.

      • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A problem I see is that a lot of gaming keyboards are always red. I really like my white back-lit keyboard I have now. I'd prefer to be able to change the color or it be not only red. Another tred I don't love is the tiny up/down arrows for the arrow keys. I'd like the laptop to have full size arrow keys, but if that's just not how they do it anymore I can cope.
      • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Like I've said, I'm deploying soon, so it needs to be tough-ish. I'm ok carrying a slightly beefier laptop if it can hold up to more abuse. I'd love to see a few options of cheaper than my budget and up towards the higher end. If some godly good deal is $50 more than my budget I'll be ok with that too.

    Thank you!

Problem with my omen 15 with 1070maxq 8gb ram

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 04:09 PM PDT

So i have bought this omen with a 1070maxq a couple of months ago, and it sucks in almost every game for a 1800€ laptop, rainbow 6 siege goes to 44fps all low, 1024x768, fortnite i play in 800x600 to play at 144fps, but it drops a lot of times to 80fps, apex is unplayable, 800x600, and still huge fps drops from 120fps to 15, freeze for a sec when i fight, can someone explain if this is ok? Is that a gaming laptop? I played with another omen, with a 1050 and never had those problems on rainbow (80/90fps) i'm a little upset bout that

If soemone can help me, that would be really nice

    Laptop recommendation - 15.4 inch +, $600 budget, USA.

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 03:39 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $600-$700 & USA. I technically have about $700 for a laptop and monitor to set up a dual screen. But I do have an older monitor that still works if I use most of the budget on the laptop.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery and best specs for the money are my preference.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Neither are critical.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows...

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.4 +

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No video editing. Will be used for work which is almost entirely internet and phone based. Doing conference calls with Zoom or Go-to-Meeting, otherwise I think most programs I need will just be web based (i.e. salesforce).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? n/a

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen and finger print reader are both nice to have but not a deal breaker. I will want to plug in an external monitor sometimes along with enough USB ports to support a wireless mouse/keyboard and possibly other.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was given a budget to buy my own laptop for a new job starting soon, while the work will not require anything special, I do want something that will last a while and is reliable.

    Thank You!

Looking for a general laptop for school/hobbies

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 03:28 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
    • United States. Budget is under $600.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    • I don't care about 2 in 1, or good battery life. I do care about the best specifications for the money though.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Don't care.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    • Windows 10.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • N/A.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Video editing/photo editing yes. Programs to run: Eclipse, Sony Vegas, UE4.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Not gaming too much, if I was I wouldn't care about how well it would run spec wise as it would be light gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • I'm not sure what is meant by a good keyboard but one that has a num pad would be preferable and spacing that isn't cramped such that of chromebooks. 3-4+ USB slots would be preferable. Build quality is important to me, as in durability too. Optical drive would be nice but shouldn't be a factor.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • N/A.

Pick or include any that apply. Best specs and somewhat good battery, because I'm not gonna switch for a long time after buying it. * How important is weight and thinness to you? it's kinda important because i wanna move it around my room, won't carry a 2kg brick * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I can install it on my own using usb drive, free dos laptops are cheaper * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15+ * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Im gonna use phtoshop and play Paladins, Smite, CSGO, Fortnite, Realm Royale and it would be cool if i can run Resident evil 2 remake (i wanna play it xo) * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Fortnite only on epic distance and others must be low/medium for 45-70 fps. I know the other games wont have problems because i still play Paladins on my potato with 30 fps/low * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard and a normal touchpad, no optical drive and at least 2 usb ports and an ips display if possible for games. * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. No lenovo or bad designed laptops, just a generic one ,i prefer black and silver if possible and good cooling so it wont stutter because of overheating. Maybe this sub can help me with my G7

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 10:56 PM PDT

I just bought Sekiro after looking up the specs and assuming that my laptop should be able to handle it, it's well above the minimum specs and many websites show I should be able to run it close to max at 1080p.

However this is far from the case; even at low I am getting constant frame drops. My specs for the laptop are: I7-8750H, 16gb RAM, and a 1060.

Have I done something wrong to poorly optimize my laptop, or should I take this in somewhere to get it looked at?

Macbook Air, Matebook X Pro, or Asus Zenbook (maybe XPS13/15)?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 08:46 AM PDT

Currently in the US, but may be moving abroad (Europe) in the near future. In that sense, I realize getting support for any machine is likely going to be a pain so I would like something I won't have to worry about flimsy hinges, loose trackpads, etc. That said, I've tried to convince myself to get a Thinkpad but it's just too industrial/business looking for me. X1 Carbon I go back and forth on, but it's also just a bit pricier.

I want something that'd be good for photo editing (not a professional, just hobby/travel stuff), and have been learning Web Dev. The option for light gaming would be nice, but is not a deal breaker as I've generally been a console gamer and maybe played 2 games on my PC in the last year. Though I'm not sure if my PS4 will be making the move with me. Really the photography - screen quality is the main concern.

Long term I know both photography and web dev would be better with monitors, but it could be a bit before I can get such a setup. I've never been a Mac user but have no real issues with the OS other than hating iTunes. Mobile I'm set on Android.

Macbook Air (2018) seems like the invest in quality option. Lose the ability to game but it'd be a machine that just works. Very light and thin and I may be traveling a bit. The new keyboard isn't my favorite but I don't hate it, just some concerns about having to get it repaired and needing a dongle for basically everything.

Matebook X Pro seems a bit like a gamble. Pretty much love all the specs, but reviews seem to be a big mix between "it's amazing" and "I'm on my 3rd model and my trackpad is loose."

Zenbook (possibly the S13) looks really nice and the non-S models give you a lot for your money. Hoping the S 13 is on display soon to try it out. But overall concerns about quality as I see a lot of posts knocking Asus.

XPS13/15 seems like another all around favorite. My mom has one from her work (XPS13) and tried it out and I kinda hate the keyboard, having to constantly retype stuff.

Looking for input on quality, personal experiences, or if there's any other laptops I've overlooked. Aesthetics are fairly important, and not really wanting something that screams "gaming laptop" either with colorful keys or anything.

Work/Gaming Laptop Suggestions - Price is irrelevant - Australia

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 09:26 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Money isn't an issue. Will be purchasing in Australia.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Form Factor is no issue if the performance is good. Battery life is not so important as I will only be using it plugged in at desks.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Weight is not an issue, though it would be nice. Thinness is also not an issue, though again, thinness would be nice. Would definitely prefer under 1" (2.54cm) thickness.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows 10.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15" Screen size would be perfect, resolution preference is 1080p or 1440p as I will not be wanting to game in 4K (I want to maintain high framerates).

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Will be gaming and normal office work, running multiple programs at once. I know 16GB Ram will be sufficient for the programs I intend to use.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Apex Legends, The Witcher 3, PUBG, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and HALO MCC (When it comes out). Settings-wise I would like the absolute best that it can do. As for the FPS I would be looking at 120hz to 144hz.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** With the introduction of USB-C Charging it would need to be able to support that as I would like to be able to have a set up where I can plug in one cable and have my peripherals (2 x Displayport Monitors, Keyboard, Mouse and Webcam all work. I will be able to source that product that can do that, it just needs to be able to support this.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I really would not want 4K and will be using it equally for work and gaming.

Replacing an ASUS GL553 ($800-$1200, USA)

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 07:41 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $800-$1200, USA. I am replacing an ASUS GL553 with a busted dedicated graphics card, so I'm trying not to downgrade.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm looking for best specs, I think. I nearly always have an outlet handy.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I carry the laptop in my backpack wherever I go, so nothing back-breaking. My current laptop weighs in at around 5.5 lbs and I think that's fine.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" or similar
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minecraft with shaders is at the top of the list. The Witcher 3, Skyrim, Dota 2, League, and Overwatch are also considerations. I'm really OK with medium graphics, but the better the better. Hitting 60fps is ideal.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? My MUST have: a 256SSD/1TBHDD hybrid storage. A clickable trackpad would be nice but I can't always have my cake and eat it too.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm operating under the assumption that it's not worth the ~$600 and month it will take to fix my GL553 if I can get an upgrade for a few extra greenbacks. Should I still be looking into that as an option?
