Sunday Rant/Rage (Mar 31 2019) - Your weekly complaint thread!

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 04:13 AM PDT

Note 1. Join our Discord, IRC, and Telegram chat-rooms! Please see our wiki for instructions.

This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:

    • Your device.

    • Your carrier.

    • Your device's manufacturer.

    • An app

    • Any other company

    Rules

    1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

    2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

    3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.

    Android/Apple Privacy

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 02:22 PM PDT

I've seen several TV ads recently plugging the "privacy" angle on Apple/IOS phones; obviously an implied comparison with android devices. I'm a long time Android user and have always considered there to be negligible difference privacy-wise with Apple. Am I wrong?

Samsung S6 My Rooting Guide Complete - TWRP, Magisk, NexusOS, Android 9.0 Pie, Xposed, XDA

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 10:31 PM PDT

Hey so not many people have S6 but for those who do have S6 and are looking to root, thought I'd like to share my process!

    1. install odin and samsung kies drivers on ur comp
    2. flash twrp (make sure it's the s6 version) download from twrp website, put phone in download mode, connect to odin, put your twrp tar file into AP of Odin, disable autoreboot in options, start flash, power off phone and go into recovery mode, should be TWRP project https://twrp.me/samsung/samsunggalaxys6.html
    3. Flash NexusOS, Samsung s6's variant of Lineage OS. It is the custom ROM of android 9.0 Pie, newest right now. NexusOS download can be found in XDA https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/orig-development/g920x-5x-nexusos-9-0-samsung-galaxy-s6-t3843199
    4. Flash the Gapps : https://opengapps.org/?arch=arm64&api=9.0&variant=pico these are the minimum amt of google apps needed
    5. Flashed MAGISK to hide root so apps wont know your phone is rooted (Zip file found on XDA by topjohnwu), then get the latest Magisk.apk from XDA too. Magisk info: https://www.xda-developers.com/magisk-hub-2/Magisk downloading: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
    6. Magisk passes google's safetynet check. however, because it's custom ROM it doesn't pass safetynet check. Install one of the modules in Magisk called SafetyPatch by hackintosh5 @ XDA developers and it bypasses safetynet so you are certified on playstore and can use Google Pay, etc. you HAVE to hide root though thru MagiskHide https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/module-safetypatcher-t3809879
    7. After Magisk stuff your phone is rooted and you can get other stuff like greenify, amplify to increase battery life, you can port a lotta stuff, built-in ad blockers, customize your entire phone, get awesome audio mods like Viper4Android or Dolby Atmos, get Youtube Vanced, substratum, GravityBox to tweak phone, etc
    8. Greenify from playstore enable superuser @ Magisk https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oasisfeng.greenify 2. Amplify from EdXposed downloads (info in next #) 3. Youtube Vanced check here: https://www.xda-developers.com/youtube-vanced-features/ 4. Substratum https://www.xda-developers.com/substratum-hub/ 5. GravityBox I believe is in EdXposed
    9. Many people besides Magisk modules they want XPosed modules so these people @ XDA made it so you can have xposed on s6 go to Magisk Modules and get Riru Core along with Riru Ed Xposed and opens entireee xposed mods so nice. ALL INFO HERE: https://www.xda-developers.com/xposed-framework-unofficial-port-android-pie/
    10. Explore and have more fun! You can do soo much stuff w root I suggest you do it! Samsung currently controls prob 50-60% of your phone. Root and you can control 100%. You can cut background processes and so many things. One of my favorites is you can uninstall BLOATWARE (search uninstall app on google play for rooted devices only) and Viper4Android the best audio tweaking out there for rooted apps. A lot of apps are able to be used by normal users but with root the capability is so much more.

    Viper4android info: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2191223

    Bloatware Delete System Apps: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jumobile.manager.systemapp

    Extra:
Google Camera Port from Pixel: https://www.xda-developers.com/google-camera-port-hub/

Google Camer Port Specific to Samsung S6: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/themes/google-camera-portrait-mode-t3736859

*: This port is only for Exynos Samsung s6 or s7, not Snapdragon

The only purchase I made that I suggest you to make is getting Root Explorer on Google Play to install APKs though any file explorer is fine. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer

Notes: 1. Fastest way to install apks: Download to computer, transfer to phone, open up in file explorer and install

    1. Fastest way to install zips: Flashify though I personally download to comp, transfer to phone, go to TWRP custom recovery to install zip Flashify: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cgollner.flashify

LAST note, everything on here is FREE (except for Root Explorer and it's optional) so have fun and enjoy as you root! Make sure to support all the developers @ XDA and give donations if things are just awesome!

Call Screen for Moto & Nokia phones may be coming (see body)

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 07:20 PM PDT

I was looking through the Phone app's files (latest beta, Pixel 1) when I found these flags:

     <boolean name="__data_rollout__SpeakEasy.CallScreenEnglishUsForNokia__launched__" value="false" /> <boolean name="__data_rollout__SpeakEasy.CallScreenEnglishUsForMoto__launched__" value="false" />

    What do you guys think?

Side note: has anyone gotten Call Screen in Canada? I haven't got it yet, contacted Google Support and they said they'd follow up.
