Asus RT-AC66U stuck in recovery mode Posted: 31 Mar 2019 05:42 PM PDT Hi all, My RT-AC66U won't exit recovery mode. I was trying to hard reset it and it didn't work, so I put it in recovery mode. I brought it to my desktop, somehow got it out of recovery and used wifi to change the settings, unplugged it, took it down to connect and it was in recovery mode again. I've since re-flashed the firmware, which worked according to the Asus firmware tool, but the router won't leave recovery. I waited all night, nothing. I already searched but I don't see anyone else with this issue....usually once the recovery tool works people are good to go. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Safety Concern - new item in my network I don't recognize Posted: 31 Mar 2019 05:34 AM PDT Third EDIT: I'm very, very grateful for all the help. It really did help get me through this without going into a full panic and I feel much safer. I'll continue to reply to any new comments. Second EDIT: I'm going to reset the Netgear. I can't get back in with my security answers and I'm just fried. I assume to reassign the static IP to the Netgear I'll need to direct wire into the Gateway since it has no wifi capability. Is that correct? Or does the wifi need to be turned back on first? EDIT: The Nighthawk is on a static IP but using DCHP for the wifi assignments. I have a few more static IP's I can assign, assuming I can get logged back into the router. I had a new Netgear Nighthawk installed yesterday to go behind my ATT gateway and I then set up the Disney Circle. This morning I had an alert that an AzureWave was now connected to the Circle system. A Google search shows it's a WiFi card, but for what? Why not show up last night? No new products were set up to the WiFi after I set up the Circle account. I screenshot the MAC address. I have unplugged everything. I'm to scared to leave anything up and running. There are safety concerns related to my soon to be ex husband. [link] [comments] |
House upgraded to gigabit. Two anomalies that I'm hoping someone can explain. Posted: 31 Mar 2019 02:35 PM PDT Recently upgraded to Cox gigabit. So far, there are two problems that have me a bit baffled. 1: First and foremost, it is not a gigabit. Not even close. Typically get about 380, but it ranges from 240 to 420. This is directly from the modem, on several different PCs. Called Cox about this on the first day, and they basically lied, saying it was due to an outage that they expected to have sorted out within a few hours. I've looked online and it seems this is a common problem with Cox gigabit, but when it happens, the end user never gets a resolution. My speculation is that Cox is quite simply not able to provide what they promise to certain areas, but that this doesn't stop them advertising that they can, or charging full price. But I'm hoping someone has a better idea. 2: Despite the increased download bandwidth, I experience phenomena which suggest that the bandwidth is inconsistent to the point of being disruptive in ways that our previous (100mb) service wasn't. Examples: Web pages feeling like they get stuck more often than they should, when I click links. More particularly: Youtube quickly resorting to 360p mode when I'm watching a video, which it should only do when it feels so starved for bandwidth that the only way to keep the video from pausing is to drastically drop resolution. This happens reliably. So on this point, I am wondering if there are ways I can test bandwidth/connectivity that will identify the shortcomings that are responsible for particularly the Youtube problem. Some test that will say "Yep, this thing is happening" but would not say the same thing on the 100mb service since I never once experienced that kind of problem on it. That's about all I got. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2019 06:27 PM PDT My buddy moved into a new house, and this is his networking situation. I've only dealt with running my own Ethernet. Any ideas of what is happening in this closet? And why the Ethernets are wired in this configuration? What the big tail of taped up wires are? Thanks for any help! [link] [comments] |
Looking to replace AirPort Extreme in small house. Posted: 31 Mar 2019 12:12 PM PDT I have a 2 bedroom house (about 900 square feet) with no major barriers for WiFi signals. Right now we have CenturyLink DSL that can produce a max of 50mbps bonded. We are using their equipment in transparent bridge mode and using the AirPort to handle the network. With the AirPort no longer being supported, and IPv6 not working I was thinking it was time to replace it with new equipment. There are two users in the house and the majority of usage is streaming video, a Plex server, gaming (both console and PC), some torrenting, and general web usage. I want to lean on the side of overkill with whatever equipment we get. My issue is I'm not as network savvy as I would like to be so choosing what to replace the AirPort with has become a huge headache with too many options, with differences that I don't know enough about to make a confident choice. Budget is a max of $200. I looked at the Ubiquiti equipment you see recommended here a lot, but when doing more in depth research I saw some things about the possibility of the router reaching eol and also some stuff about software that needs to be running 24/7 which I didn't like. Really I am just looking for something that has as low latency as possible within reason over Wi-Fi for streaming devices, mobile devices, and laptops (I know the most important part of this is a physical line to the devices, but without some serious home renovation work I only have PC hardwired in, and use a power line adapter for the consoles in the living room). So far I have looked at: Ubiquiti - ER-X and AP Lite Nighthawks (not sure of the model that would be best here) Asus (again not sure which model would be best here). [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Mar 2019 07:49 PM PDT I live in a Villa with my fiance right now but most things we use utilize wireless. The TV, Google Home, Laptops, Phones, ChromeCast, etc.. The only thin I use heavily that is wired in is my gaming PC. We currently get around 440Mbps with Charter (no option for gig near me yet). Whats the best router for the money that I should get that will last me and work well for my gaming PC and constant streaming of 4K and such over the wifi? Or should I just get another Nighthawk? Price Range is probably around $300 [link] [comments] |
Upgraded speeds only work on half of my devices Posted: 31 Mar 2019 07:32 PM PDT I upgraded my network speed from 100/100 to 300/300. I was using my equipment for the old speed and it worked flawlessly. Since I upgraded, I do not get 300/300 on all of my devices. All of our apple phones show as having the 300/300 speed on speed tests, but android phones and any computers seem to be stuck at 100/100. Even my desktop connected by Ethernet shows link speed as 100/100. I have reset the router, forgot the network and rediscovered it on all of the devices. My note 9 was showing 300/300 earlier today, but just now it is again capped at 100/100 (no changes were made in between the tests. Verizon support is unwilling to help. I work in tech, but networking is not my thing at all. Thank you for any advice! Edit: SOLVED! Thank You! [link] [comments] |
Some Network Devices Connecting Others Aren’t Posted: 31 Mar 2019 06:49 PM PDT This problem has had me wanting to pull my hair out for days, so here goes. First, let me describe my network set up in order to make this a bit more straight forward. We have two buildings on our property separated by a drive way. One of them acts as an office, one is the place we sleep. The office is where our Google Fiber comes in, and is also where our modem is housed. We have a 155 foot Cat6 line that runs from the modem, across the driveway, and into our house which connects directly into a Linksys dual band wireless router. There are 4 Ethernet ports in the basement of our house that are directly connected to this Linksys router as well. So here is our issue. We have a variety of wireless devices and wired devices on our home network, but only some of them properly connect to the internet. The devices that don't connect properly return a "IP address could not be obtained" error. I can not figure out for the life of me what is the issue. DHCP is turned on on both the modem and on the Linksys router. Does this matter? What other settings could cause this problem? I was on the phone with the Linksys people for two hours troubleshooting to no avail. If there are anymore questions you need answered, ask away! I am really really not having a good week because of this bullshit internet. I should also note that we have had this same issue on 3 different routers, and the Google modem was replaced 4 days ago. Is there a way to use my ISP + My Phone 4G network at the same time? (stability reason) Posted: 31 Mar 2019 06:23 PM PDT Hi, thank you for hearing me out. I live in Hong Kong and I would like to broadcast on Twitch, and I only have one ISP available in my apartment. My ISP itself is a 200MB package (190MB D/L + 10MB U/L), on paper it is decent, however there is a problem. While my D/L speed is great, however my upload is choppy, it will be packet loss every 20 seconds. I have contacted my ISP about it, basically I have to replace my cables to avoid dropping frames. (Some cables are hiding behind the wall, that's why it is not a viable option on my end) So here comes my phone, my network provider is a 20mb D/L + 20mb U/L (unlimited usage), is there a way that I can benefit from the 20mb U/L. Here are the questions:

Trying to bridge a 2nd router wirelessly to get more coverage but having issues Posted: 31 Mar 2019 06:15 PM PDT I have 3 devices: -Verizon router/modem - nat, dhcp server, etc on except wireless since it's in the basement -Asus RT-AC68U - wired bridged router. Wireless on, dhcp, nat, etc off. Works good and devices get their IP. -TP-link Archer c9- trying to wirelessly bridge (wds) with the asus router. Devices aren't getting the IP address. So my main Verizon router/modem in the basement have the wireless off because I have it wired bridged to the router (Asus RT-AC68U) on the main floor to get the best wifi coverage. I want to stick a 2nd extender on the 2nd floor so I'm trying to wirelessly (WDS) my TP-link Archer c9 upstairs to my first bridged router Asus RT-AC68U. I was able to successfully WDS to the Asus router. I checked on my verizon router IP list (that have DHCP on) and I noticed the TP-link Archer c9 router wasn't showing so I statically added it to the IP list. I tried connecting wirelessly to my TP-link Archer c9 through my phone to test but it can never get an IP address. I made sure NAT and DHCP are off to both the bridged router and both bridged router have unique static IP address. The 1st bridge router (Asus RT-AC68U) been working great for almost a year now and have no problems issuing IP address from the verizon router. [link] [comments] |
Ultra noob question re: cables. Posted: 31 Mar 2019 06:07 PM PDT My apologies, I am quite computer literate but networking is an arcane art. Real easy question: just got fiber internet. Should I get cat6 cable to run to all my devices to take advantage of my new blazing speeds, or is cat5e still fast enough? Thanks all [link] [comments] |
Help Pls Can't get D-link login page Posted: 31 Mar 2019 06:07 PM PDT I can ping just fine but no way can I get the D-Link router sign in page. I am of course on the web using desktop PC connected to Spectrum modem and my own D-Link Archer Router. I have DHCP automatic I can ping 192.168.0.1 and no packets lost and everything is fine. Using Firefox browser (not on Google page) I type 192.168.0.1 and get "site cannot be found". I went into network settings and tried not using automatic DHCP and setting 8.8.8.8 as login address but that does not work either. Now I have DHCP automatic back on I am on Windows10 ver 1809 Desktop I have Spectrum modem & my D-Link Archer Router Now, how the heck to I get to the Router Sign in page please ??? Thanks, Donna I am afraid to reset the router I [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Mar 2019 05:18 PM PDT So I was wondering about this issue. If the answer is yes, what can I do to combat this? I catch up on work over the weekend using my work laptop. I was wondering if my employer is able to track the internet history of my other devices connected to my wifi network. [link] [comments] |
Please help. I need recommendations for a router and modem for this crappy xfinity wifi that i have. Posted: 31 Mar 2019 01:25 PM PDT Hi. i'm not very good at tech stuff so i don't know what's good and all that lol. i currently have 3 xboxes running all at once or at least one at all times basically. With 4 phones. The xbox in the living room is so slow and constantly disconnecting, it's wireless though so i knew it wouldn't be good already. My current set up is literally just an Arris SBG6400 lol i bought it like 2 years ago for pretty cheap. price range is like $100 but it's okay if it cost more because it's cheaper instead of renting long term. I'm a huge noob when it comes to all this if it isn't obvious haha. Please help! One last thing is we all use our xbox's for netflix, youtube, hulu, etc. and i use my xbox one for gaming online and streaming apps too. Thanks!! [link] [comments] |
Router suggestion - Static ARP requirement Posted: 31 Mar 2019 05:10 PM PDT Hi guys! I've come to a point where I'm looking to replace my router as it has become deficient of a couple of features that I would now like to use. I'm hoping someone might be able to provide some suggestions. For the background on this - Valve recently updated their streaming technology in steam meaning that I can now stream games from my fairly powerful PC using their 'Steam Link' client. In order to make this experience complete I went about acquiring some power line adapters so that I can use WOL to power up my machine while I'm out of the house. Between the jigs and the reels, I set up my port forwarding and did my due diligence on the security aspects of my network and after a few hours had everything set up the way I want it. I could finally WOL my machine, RDP into it and then use steam link to stream my library - in theory. In practice - I then learned the hard way about ARP caching which means that my WOL magic packet from remote machine stops working after about 15 minutes when my local machines MAC address is purged from the routers ARP table. Unfortunately my supplied router does not allow me to create a static ARP entry for my PC, and is limited in quite a few other areas too. So to cut a long story short, I'd like to get some recommendations of routers that do support static ARP entries in addition to bells and whistles such as (but not limited to): Decent management software , AC1300 or more, MIMO, Gigabit Ethernet, 4 Ports, the ability to log into a VPN ,and hopefully some decent range. Your suggestions are much appreciated, and if it could not cost me my first born child that would be even better. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2019 03:24 PM PDT For the last couple years I have been using one of the T-Mobile TM-AC1900AC routers flashed with Merlin. It recently decided it would rather be a brick than a router so I am in the market for a replacement. I was very happy with the performance, features, and interface for the 2+ years that it worked. Any suggestions on a replacement? Should I get a real RT-AC68 or maybe upgrade to the 86? Any other suggestions? At this point I don't really think I need to spend over $200 on a router. I'm not 100% married to the the Asus brand but it seed to work well for me. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Mar 2019 03:12 PM PDT Hey what's up everyone! Recently just got the Ac4000 Netgear x6s Tri-band but wanted to know if there is any better router for more or less. Living in 1,100sq apartment with family and we use tons of devices, like 2 ps4 (one wired and one wireless) 2 newest smart TVs, and min of 10 devices and counting. Currently having all devices on 2.4, My TV and phone to 5ghz, and lastly dedicated second 5ghz to my PS4 only. Is my setup good ? [link] [comments] |
Installing a ubiquiti AP in my GFs house. Just needed some advice. Posted: 31 Mar 2019 11:20 AM PDT So my GF bought a house and being the dude with a server closet she asked me to handle her home network. Now, she said she could just pay Comcast $13 a month for their router combo but being the strong headed DIY guy I said no. First problem was I assumed Comcast installation dude would do a good job. I told her where we wanted the coax to be ran. Into the office. I go over to hers and instead of running the cable into the wall.. like any normal person. He's drilled a hole in her ceiling in the closet, ran it though the ceiling and then tacked it diagonally across the wall of the closet and then through the interior walls to the other side. 🙄. Anyway. That's not the issue I just couldn't believe he ran it that way. Comcast technicians... Not even once. So I gave her my old modem (docsis 3.0 Netgear) and my old Asus RT-N66u running Merlin firmware. I thought this would be fine as I ran it for a while in my house which is bigger than hers. Anyway, I set it up and her 5ghz doesn't even reach like 10ft down the stairs. It has 1-2 bars and constantly disconnects. She has 150mbps internet and 2ghz isn't an option since it runs at around 20-30mbps. I switched channels to a less used one and still no good. So I'm going to buy her a ubiquiti AP since this is what I use, and it has amazing coverage and it's great. I have the AC-PRO AP in my house but I'm thinking maybe she needs the LR? I'm assuming the long range has better wall penetration than the Pro? I'm assuming it's either her Walls are thicker or there's some sort of interference and the weak 5ghz signal can't handle both. Would the LR be the best option? Also, I assume I will have to buy her something like an 4 or 8 port switch, will that be sufficient to assign DHCP to her wifi devices from the AP? Her modem is a Netgear CM600, will be connected to a switch, and then her ubiqiti AP connected the the switch. Will this setup be sufficient that her wifi devices will be assigned IPs/DHCP (Chromecast, phones etc.)? In a nut shell: 1) which Ubiquiti AP is best for wall penetration 2) to run a ubiquiti AP in a small home network, do I need a switch for DHCP/IP assigning? [link] [comments] |
Clarification about WiFi vs APs Posted: 31 Mar 2019 03:01 PM PDT Hello. I just have a quick verification question to make sure I'm understanding something correctly. My cat was awesome enough to more or less kind of destroy my wifi router, so I'm looking to replace. EDIT: yep. still needs a switch. I thought that sounded weird. At the moment I'm thinking about using my router (ASUS RT-N66u) as aforementioned switch for the TP-Link AP mentioned below. There are still concerns. This house is old and not wired for anything, and I'm limited in where i can place it (though its also small. there's maybe twenty feet and a couple walls between the modem and where I usually am). While y'all've made this sound pretty simple, other Q/A and reviews I've been looking at give the impression that it's less so. [link] [comments] |
Home Connectivity drops when copying via Samba Posted: 31 Mar 2019 02:54 PM PDT Hey guys! I've got a home media server that I'm trying to copy some files over to. However, when I start doing this, both my computer and our Roku lose connection to the internet (and I actually even lose connection to our router's gateway). I've tried setting the Roku as high priority in Linksys's "Media Prioritization", but I have doubts that's even doing anything. Our network is organized with a Gigabit fiber modem on passthrough mode to a Linksys router, which has my personal computer, another office computer, home security on it, and a switch. The switch has the NAS, Media Server, and Roku on it. Any troubleshooting tips, or pointing me in the right direction for where and what I should be searching would be appreciated, thanks!
