USB Type C Hubs cause network storms and wireless device issues Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:52 AM PST Hello fellow Windows users, I've been chasing a gremlin in my network over the past month and have finally discovered it. We were having an issue where some of our switches would freeze at random and would only come back up when unplugged and replugged. We have a very simple structure and have RSTP in place as well. These switches have all wiring certified as good as of a few weeks ago, the switch itself was RMA'ed, the wiring from patch to switch is brand new Cat 6, latest firmware on the switch. Config is exactly the same as all other switches at this level of RSTP. One of the problem switches went offline on a very calm Friday morning and I decided to see if I could trace it out based on a specific port causing a broadcast storm. I setup a constant ping test to this switch, unplugged a lit port, waited a few seconds and went onto the next one. I pulled one port out and the switch came right back to life. I repatched the cable and went to the users desk. There was no computer there. So I followed the network cord and noticed that it was plugged into a Totu USB Type C hub (https://www.amazon.com/TOTU-Ethernet-Delivery-Portable-Laptops/dp/B07FX2LW35/). This hub is the highest rated on amazon atm. Since this hub offers pass through power, the USB type c charging cable that comes with newer macbooks was plugged into it, giving the hub power without a computer. I unplugged the power from the hub and the switch came back to life instantly. I went to Amazon, went to the 1 star reviews of this device and found 2 users with the same issue. I did a test at my desk with one of these hubs plugged in with passthrough power and an ethernet cord and watched as the traffic on my switch grew and grew like crazy without any computer. Over the weekend I spent a few hours searching through hundreds of type c hubs across all price points via Amazon. These hubs are essential for our USB type c only devices such as our macbook pros made during or after 2017 and our newer windows laptops that lack ports. The conclusions I came to based on Amazon reviews/manufacture comments are as follows
My solution to this issue will go four ways:
Hope this helps some of you out. [link] [comments]

Does the Your Phone app only work on WiFi? Posted: 05 Feb 2019 12:40 PM PST I just set up the Your Phone app, and it's working so far. However, when I disconnect my phone from WiFi, it says the app lost connection to my phone. I have been using the Android Messages previously, which works on mobile data. I don't always have reliable WiFi available, so I'd like to use the app with mobile data. I tried going into the app settings and making sure it's able to use mobile data, but it still doesn't seem to work. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 05:30 PM PST I need help and I'm hoping something isn't terribly wrong. I'm trying to open windows apps on my laptop (Win 10) and they keep failing to open. For example, when I'm trying to open calculator or email they either start up for a second or two, or they will not open even though I click on them several times (over a period of time). Any advice would help, and if I'm in the wrong subreddit i would like to know where to go [link] [comments]

Is there a way to decrease the intensity of the colorblind mode(s)? Posted: 05 Feb 2019 02:59 PM PST I use red-green deuteranopia to fix the colors on my screen, it basically adds more red to every color, red becomes way better for my eyes. But I've bought a new laptop and this color blind fix intensity is too high, on my pc it's not that red. Is it possible to halve the value that this mode adds? [link] [comments]
Any way to make Win 7 remember volume levels for programs when you switch audio output? Posted: 05 Feb 2019 10:41 AM PST I switch daily from earphones to speakers and viceversa, but every time windows will forget all the audio levels I have set for each program :( [link] [comments]
Could someone tell me the potential dangers of editing the windows registry? Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:32 AM PST On my new HP Spectre laptop, there is a minor audio bug where whenever I pause youtube and unpause it, the audio isn't there for 1 to 3 seconds. I read on this buried HP forum here: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Audio/System-Sound-Delay/m-p/6508198#M91186 than this can be fixed by editing the Windows registry. Would I risk messing up my computer by making the suggested edits? Also, is there not some kind of fail-safe way to edit the registry? So if I mess something up I could just revert to the previous version of the registry? [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:03 AM PST I recently did a new install of Windows 10 Home. Everything now has to be run as admin in order for me to make any changes or to save any new files. I am the only user. Windows 10 Home Inteli7-4770k @ 3.5GHz 32gb ram Intel 510 Series 120gb ssd In order for me to do anything and make changes I have to run as administrator. I have changed UAC, I have changed SmartScreen, I have given all users read/write authorization in folders, files, drives, .exe files. I have created new accounts and give admin permission to them. I have started over, reinstalled, and the problem persists. The majority of the information I have found while searching for fixes talk about giving admin privileges for specific users or programs. No amount of making any of these changes has worked. Specifically, I am unable to change id tags in audio software that I use on a daily basis. All of these programs I have used for years, and have never had any problem saving files or making changes. I use my computer primarily for editing audio, and want to have my work space usable. How can I restore my environment variables? Posted: 05 Feb 2019 06:40 AM PST So, recently I decided I want to learn java web development with Oracle's MySQL database. After preparing my development environment I noticed I had seted up an variable by mistake, then I deleted that. The problem is my mouse has a double click issue and that made me delete variables that I didn't want to, including the PATH variable. Now many applications installed aren't working properly, including the MySQL. Any way I can restore the environment variables without having to reinstall the system? [link] [comments]

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 01:48 AM PST Hey guys, i have following issue with my Desktop PC. Moved into a new appartment and started having problems with my computer. It started with following issue: The pc would not start properly always giving Errors blabla with 2 choosing options (press F* to run setup, press F* to continue...) After a few times even this problem dissappeared and the computer wouldn't start at all. (Turning on, only fans running but no video signal or anything like keyboard RGB running...) Tried different solutions and workarounds.(Reinstall Win10 - at this time it was still possible to run an OS, Unplugging it, Mainboard Battery swap, Testing the RAM bars, different SSD/HDD, Driver updates...) Nothing worked. Thought mainboard may be broken. So i left the computer in the office unplugged from any electricity. A few days later (yesterday) i thought i might give it a try again. Turned it on and everything running perfectly fine. Testing different functionalities and everything seemed perfectly fine. Then i started to recognize some issues. My screen sometimes, mostly while using Chrome but sometimes even with normal Windows applications, freezes. So for example while surfing the web i sometimes open new tabs in chrome. After doing that it seems like the new tab is loading. But then you can see its frozen. At the first moments it is possible to hover the cursor over the Windows Button on the Taskbar and the icons are still showing some animations but it is not possible to click something. After a few seconds even this isn't possible anymore. Screen just freezes for about 30-60 seconds and then opens up everything i clicked or moved etc. I have tried to have a look at this problem while having an eye on the taskmanager. But nothing suspicious. No overly heavy running processes or something like that. Core temperatures are fine, too. Did another inplace Win10 installation. Still having the same issue. Please help me. Need this thing running properly so i can keep preparing for my exams... [link] [comments] |
