    How "who's hiring" thread has impacted you? Did you ever get a job from it?

    I really like this sub and how it works weekly, from questions to who's hiring to app feedback. Feels like a living organism.

    One thing I am really curious is about how the hiring thread has impacted the community life. I'm not a mod that is making this question because wants to change the way it works. I'm also not someone that wasn't hired and now wants to end it. It is really just a curiosity. I like the idea and hope it keeps going forward. I would love to see what you say, how it has been good, how it has been less than expected.

    Does the Android X Jetifer use dynamic versioning?

    I have been looking into migrating to Android x. From what I can tell Jetifier can handle mapping old names to new names. But, I'm confused on a few details. Which Android x version will Jetifer map too? Can you define the specific version of Android X libraries? Does Jetifier work with Gradle setting's like:

    api("androidx.appcompat:appcompat:1.0.0") { force = true } api("androidx.arch.core:core:2.0.0") { force = true }

    My concern is that Jetifer makes reproducible builds impossible.

    I'm frustrated from Google (READ_CALL_LOG permission)

    Hello, I have to complain.

    I have little application (name of application is Ahaaa) with simple function. I released it in december 2018. I have now just 1100 downloads and about 700 active users.

    And now... Google wants to disable (ban) my app.

    My application is simple note application which shows notes on caller screen when somebody call to you.

    I have made it according to my best knowledge and conscience. I don't ask for permission which I don't need.

    I ask for READ_CALL_LOG because I need to know who is calling. I don't have internet connection permission. I ask only for permission which I need for my core functionality.

    This function is not present in Android system and therefore is no way to handle this functionality without my application.

    My users are losing the functionality they think is useful (what they say and reviews).

    And I'm frustrated because I can not do anything about it. I just needed to tell.

    How to set Firebase user property null or clear

    Just finished the Udacity Course from Google and wondering where to head to next

I just finished the Udacity course that they provided and I created my first app(which is just a picture with 2 texts on top of it...) and am wondering where to go next. Thanks!

    Criticality broken (SMS & Call log) Permission Declaration form

    This is a critical issue where the "Compliance status" choice is NOT accepted/submitted/saved in the new Permission Declaration form, included on the "create/edit release" screen. Steps to to reproduce...

    Choose the option "Yes, this release meets the SMS and Call Log permissions policy", choose some "Core functionality", select all "Declarations", then click SAVE, and immediately receive an e-mail stating:

    Hi Developers at <Name>,

    Thank you for submitting your information to the Google Play team. You have indicated that your app in this release does not meet the SMS and Call Log permissions policy.

    Your app is granted a provisional pass until March 9, 2019 to either remove the specified Call Log or SMS permissions from your app or make the necessary changes to bring your app into compliance with our Permissions policy, or your app will be removed from Google Play.

    For more information, please visit the Play Console Help Center, which describes intended uses, exceptions, invalid uses, and alternative options for use of Call Log or SMS permissions.

    Which is obviously untrue, since "Yes, ..." was selected above. The form is ignoring the "Compliance status" choice! This can easily be verified by clicking the back (<-) arrow to return to the "release track" screen, click EDIT RELEASE again for the same release and find that "Compliance status" has reverted back to being unspecified.

    The form only worked for my first release after the new form was implemented (Jan 23rd) , but never since. So even if you've not encountered this bug yet, i encourage you to try adding a new release and perform the steps above to ensure you won't be for your next release, which may be too close to the March 9th deadline for to you do anything about it.

    Does this bug occur for anyone else, if so, what "core functionality" do you choose?

    If you're also affected, please report it to Google immediately. Time is running out for us developers, so we have to convince Google to fix it now!

    Has anyone found a workaround for this issue, if so, how does it work?

    If not, the only alternative i see now is to use the Permissions Appeal Form.

    If Google is reading this, please fix this critical issue immediately, it's blocking developers from complying with the policy. If not, provide an alternate solution or revert back to the old separate form in a timely manner.

    • February 5th: Got a response for the initial issue report submitted on January 29th, via live chat. They directed me to use the old separate form which isn't even available any longer.

    What are your org.gradle.jvmargs for Android projects?

    Background:

    I am running quite complex project with Dagger, Kotlin, RxJava, many parametrized tests, some Robolectric ones. Usually team's developer's machines have 32GB RAM, and current configuration limits the max heap size to 8g. This limit results sometimes with OOM on CI, as we run builds+tests of all flavours of the app.

    I am exploring options and would like to know: Current setting + brief overview of how heavyweight your project is.

    A timeline of events in the Call/SMS fiasco that threatens to fracture Google-developer relations

    One thing after another is going wrong with the Call/SMS app ban issue currently ongoing.

    When you make a monumentally flawed decision, without examining its complexities, this is what you get. Also Google is ruining dev goodwill.

    Right now they have gone through these steps:

    • sprung directive around Christmas - ruining holidays for devs worried about such a big change before the initial Jan 9, 2019 deadline.

    • initially suggested Permissions Declaration Form would allow apps to get exemption.

    • rejected Tasker - storm ensued and they reversed, saying unofficially that Tasker will be accomodated. Task Automation gets added to the Permissions Declaration Form. But same developers' Join app does not get that accomodation. Also other Task Automation apps continue to be rejected like Automate.

    • seeing that Task Automation is an exception, call recorder devs figure they can claim that, since after all Tasker can also do call recording if configured for that, so a more restricted subset of that in call recorder app should be acceptable. They are all rejected. Later call recorder appears in Form as a prohibited use of permissions !

    • up until Jan 9, 2019 deadline, devs are unsure what fill in Form will do - will it give automatic extension until Mar 9, 2019, or is that also discretionary on Google's part. I have a post on this vagueness in Google's language in the docs - in one place they suggest automatic extension, in another they suggest it's Google's choice.

    • as Jan 9, 2019 deadline expires, devs start to realize that everybody's getting extension if filled form.

    • Form keeps changing - prohibition against call recorders using this permission appears in the form. Form changes over time. Devs are not clear if need to fill form again ?

    • Form appears on Google Developer Console, but doesnt allow updating apps, even if have removed the offending permissions. Devs figure out ways to update, fill form. Google tells a few devs the procedure to avoid bug, which devs share here on reddit.

    • as of now Form is still broken. The main thrust of Form now seems to be that all apps have to remove permissions. Filling out Form is only giving time until Mar 9, 2019 to clean out apps - remove permissions. Devs who claim exception like Automate leveraging the Task Automation exception are being sent rejection emails. It is still not clear why call recorders are on prohibited list, when they are also an even narrower niche of Task Automation - so why are they penalized.

    So end result of months of pain is that situation is not clearer, what was on offer before in the form of exceptions, are not being granted, and narrower use apps are being prohibited, like call recorder apps, local offline SMS backup apps etc.

    EDIT: this is from memory - hopefully I can add references for each stage, since we have a stream of posts documenting these right from this sub-reddit. Feel free to add corrections.

    Feature ratings in Google Play

    Howdy developers, I'm having a little problem with the Google Play store. I have an app currently out, with an overall rating of about 4.8, however the feature ratings (gameplay, controls, graphics) are at 2.7...

    Maybe I've got a lot to work on, but given the significant difference between these ratings, I wanted to find out more about it. However I can't find any analytical stuff in the google play developer console, only information regarding the overall rating, rather than the feature ratings. And NOW when I attempted to leave a review of another game, I do not get the option of rating the features. Thus, I am at dead end

    So, I was wondering if anyone else has had problems of this kind? Or know how to find out more about an apps feature ratings. Similarly, has anyone else had problems leaving feature ratings?

    Is it just me or Google Play's stats and reports are complete rubbish?

    I find the statistics and reports in Developer console useless. Lot of data are delayed, acquisition reports are just nonsense and I'm not even able to see a complete list of installs by country. Am I doing something wrong or do you have the same experience? Did they even bother to test it with some real users?

    Google Rejected my deceleration Form

    I recently received the notification from google play that my app uses some of the permissions that are not necessary so I need to submit a declaration form .So I submitted the declaration form . They asked these questions so I replied this:-

    1: In one sentence, please describe the core functionality of your app.

    This is an security app, app uses sms in sense when there is not internet, app will send sms after asking user and giving full awarness about the sms sending, sms only will be send when user need not intensively, and will send to only user declear person whom user want to send

    2: What is the core functionality in your app requiring the Call Log and / or SMS permissions?

    Connected device companion apps that enable send and receive of SMS or calls [SEND_SMS, WRITE_SMS, RECEIVE_SMS, RECEIVE_MMS, READ_SMS, READ_CALL_LOG, PROCESS_OUTGOING_CALLS, WRITE_CALL_LOG], N/A

    4: Do any of the following other use cases apply to your app's core functionality request for Call Log or SMS permissions?

    Physical safety or emergency alerts. After few Days I got this reply We reviewed your request and found that your app does not qualify for use of the requested permissions for the following reasons: The declared functionality {CONNECTED_COMPANION_DEVICES} is determined to be unnecessary or not aligned with the core functionality of your app. It looks like you are using SMS/Call Log permissions group for functions that might qualify for exceptions: {SAFETY_EMERGENCY_ALERT}. Please declare it in the declaration and resubmit the form. Please Tell me is there any solution to fix it ? What changes I need to make in my code?

    Can someone Eli5 what flutter is?

    1) what is flutter and is it important?

    2) can I make animations and views like This without flutter?

    Method clear in android.util.SparseIntArray not mocked

    I'm trying to mock a class which uses a GridLayoutManager, using the MockK library, I keep receiving the error above, but am unsure how to mock SparseIntArray.clear() which is being called from within a method of the abstract helper class SpanSizeLookup within GridLayoutManager. Any ideas?

    Fused Location Noice cancellation

    Hey Devs

    need your valuable suggestion for removing noisy locations provided by FusedLocation API using Kalman Filter as per some comment some other which says that GPS itself filter new location with kalman filter . but there are also some other articles which say we can smooth location using this exact filter. the question is???

    so should i opt Kalman Filter or there are another way to tackle the noisy location point.

    my requirement is

    • get most accurate possible location
    • location can be fetched while in offline or low network area(as FusedLocation API use network provider also)

    • there are some intentional off road transit also possible by user so i can't discard off road location (ex: by using SnapToRoad)

    3. Are their content creators like Paul Hudson, Sean Allen, etc. Who create videos/podcasts for Android Development?
      1. There seems to be a much deeper pool of content for iOS development just wondering what there is in the Android Development world. (I know about "Let's Build That App [he uses Kotlin though, no Java] and "Fragmented")

    What's the best way to organise your developer account from your personal account

    I'm looking to change my main email address to a new gmail address, and then use this new gmail address to create a new google account. This will all be for personal use only.

    I will then create another gmail account for my business and create a new google account using that business gmail account. I will then use the business google account to create my developer account and use that to upload and manage my applications. I will also use this gmail account to create my firebase and admob accounts.

    Separating your main google and gmail accounts from any business accounts seems like the best idea in the event of your account getting banned, right?

    Does this sound reasonable? Is using gmail for an email provider a good idea?

    If I were to instead buy an email domain like @mybusiness.com, should I use this domain for any personal usage and create my personal google account using this? Or should I only use this domain for business purposes and only create my google and developer accounts using an email address that uses this custom domain?

    If I were to use a custom domain, would using g-suite be a good idea? I'm only a sole developer and work alone.

    Retrieving XHR/Ajax results via REST calls and Android?

    Ok, I'm new to this so hope someone can help : (

    On my browser's Network console, there's a tab called XHR where it shows the outcome of the API call (which is a dynamic table and some dynamically generated real-time data). I understand this is an AJAX call since the summery of the request is something like this:

    URL: https://www.someweb/DataAjax Status: 200 OK Source: Network

    I attempted to capture the returning values by using HttpsURLConnection, and using the following conditions:

    But, from the log trace, I didn't get the table or the data - just the webpage itself - am I missing something here?
