Comcast upped my rate, so I'm dropping them and getting Gigabit from CenturyLink for $65/mo - Advice on hardware for my needs to get Gigabit?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 10:07 AM PST

    Hey there,

Comcast is trying to charge me $65 a month for 40mbps internet, which is awfully silly considering that CenturyLink is offering $65 gigabit with price for life.

Never had CenturyLink before. Let's hope they're better.

About our home: 3 stories, 2600 sq feet including the basement and garage - mostly open floor plan.

About us: 2 people in home - I'm the tech nerd - she doesn't really care and only streams Netflix + YoutubeTV

Devices: 1 Gaming PC (ASUS USB-AC53 NANO Wifi Adapter), 3 Laptops (1 personal (2012 MacBook Pro), 1 each of us for work (New MBP and a Macbook Air for her) - multiple wifi smart home devices (3 google homes, 1 nest thermostat, 3 wifi light bulbs + more coming) - 1 smart TV (Vizio P55)

Current networking hardware: Linksys EA7300 AC1750 Router Netgear CM1000 Modem

I'm fine with upgrading whatever needs to be upgraded to get Gigabit, primarily to the Gaming PC. I imagine my router is fine and I'll probably end up selling the cable modem on eBay or craigslist.

    Any advice is appreciated.

Difference Between Wireless Router LAN Ports and Switches?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 12:47 PM PST

Noob question but I wanted to know how the LAN ports on a router differ from those on an unmanaged switch. I was planning on buying a switch to connect my PC, two gaming consoles, and smart TV but then I found out that the LAN ports on my wireless verizon router serve the same purpose and might actually be a switch as well.

Is there still a reason for me to buy a switch for my devices (besides more ports)? What would be the difference between the two methods?

Modem and PC's in two different rooms - do I need an Ethernet Switch?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 03:24 AM PST

I recently moved into a new place and my fibre (100 Mbps line) outlet is located in my lounge however, my gaming room is a little ways (about 20m) down the passage.

My house mates and I have two PC's setup there and we have hardwired one directly from our modem in the lounge however, we would like both to be hardwired. We thought about just running a second cable to the room, but it would leave the house rather messy with lan cables everywhere.

The plan is to run a single line from the lounge to the gaming room as we have now and then setup a switch in the gaming room to hardwire the two PC's. From the reading I have done, it looks like I would need an un-managed ethernet switch.

Am I on the right track with my thinking? Do you have any suggestions for a un-managed ethernet switch to use?

Any advice on how to set it up and what would be best is welcome, many thanks in advance.

[QUESTION] I'm having trouble deciding what it is I need to search for, so here's a description of what I want

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 10:27 AM PST

I assume I would like to set up a VPN (?) that each of my devices can always be connected to (laptop, desktop, phone, etc.). What I want to get at is to be able to VNC into my desktop from my laptop, or SSH from my desktop to my laptop, even when separated by different networks. It would also be cool to reference each device by name (e.g., "desktop.local", "laptop.local"). In the past, I got quite far down the OpenVPN+dnsmasq rabbit-hole, but it was hard to debug issues I was having. Does anybody know if there is a simpler combination of software that I can use to accomplish this?

Router more than occasionally kicks devices offline and doesnt let them back on

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 10:18 AM PST

So this has been happening for quite a while now. The router has always been bad, but for the first few months of having it fired up, it was working fine. My gf came home and thats when things went to shit for the router. It simply kicks every device off the router and then says one of two things: Either the internet itself is not available, or an authentication error occured.

I have been meaning to scan the network in my free time using wireshark. Currently I have very little experience with it, so while doing a scan, what should I be looking for? Also, would it help if I were to take every device off the router and one by one put them back on to see how the router behaves? Any advice would be helpful.

    Amplifi HD not finding IPv6

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 05:47 PM PST

    Hey there,

I am at lost to why it won't find ipv6 via dhcp on the amplifi mesh system. My setup is gig modem ---> edgerouter x ---> amplifi on eth04. I see in the settings of my edgerouter that the eth0 has an ipv6 and the switch0 has dhcpv6 under the ipv4 address. When I try to enable ipv6 on the amplifi router it doesn't pick up an ipv6 address. I am wondering if i have to some how have the edgerouter distribute ipv6 to the lan ports?

    thanks,

Would a Desktop set up as a router work better than a traditional

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:24 AM PST

As title suggest I am having issues with my network bandwidth at home. I had ISP(Xfinity) come out and my R8000 router is the issue. I have a spare custom desktop Asus maximus hero VI with a 4790k and 16GB of ram and Im wondering if it would be better than buying an expensive router or just as good.

My main issue is I have gigabit service and im getting 980mbps from SB8200 modem, but only 300ish mbps from my R8000 Nighthawk router, even after disabling Qos and firewalls.

    Intermittent Speed Issues, Gigabit Fiber

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 04:51 PM PST

I live in an apartment building in Connecticut and have Cox Gigablast fiber internet. I have their ONT in my closet and it runs via pre-wired Cat5e through the wall to a jack in my living room where it connects to the router. For the past few months, every few days (and sometimes more frequently) the speed slows to unusable levels. I'll wake up in the morning or get home from work and it'll be 25mbps down and 50mbps up and eventually will get even worse, often getting below 1mbps down. I can fix the issue by power cycling the router, the ONT or sometimes both. To be clear, I've fixed it in the past by power cycling just the router, another time by cycling just the ONT, and other times it has required both. Also, it has been fixed in the past just by unplugging the ethernet cable from the router and plugging it back in a little while later.

First thing I did was call Cox and when they were unable to troubleshoot it over the phone, they sent out a technician. The technicians were wildly unhelpful. The only tests they ever performed on site were speed tests as far as I could tell. And although they witnessed the unusable speeds a couple times, they would then try to plug a laptop directly into the ONT but that would solve the problem and they'd just say nothing was wrong.

I replaced the NETGEAR router Cox provided to see if that was the issue, but the same thing happens with the new router (ASUS RT-AC88u, brand new). I also used a Fluke DTX to test the Cat5e link between the ONT and the router and it passes Cat5e channel test. Cox is adamant that it's not their issue, so I'm not sure what else I can do. Any help would be appreciated.

TL;DR: Cox gigabit fiber internet occasionally (every couple of days) drops speeds down to unusable levels, tried replacing the router, confirmed Cat5e link from ONT to router is good, nothing working, Cox says it's not their fault.

    Web Traffic

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:44 AM PST

I have two relatively low-traffic websites that I figure is best served from my homelab than paying a fee for a monthly provider. However, I am not skilled enough in networking to know if the following scenario is possible or not.

I have several VMs running and in particular each website is located (for their own reasons) on their own VM. They cannot be combined to run on one VM.

If an outside user is coming to website1.domain.net they should go to VM:website1, port 80.

If an outside user is coming to website2.domain.net, tehys hould to go VM:website2, port 80.

So far, all I am seeing is I can direct port traffic -- but what I'd like to know is can I direct based on sub-domain? If it helps any, we have some Dell Poweredge gear running our switch. The basic setup is:

[ISP Modem] -> [Dell Managed Router] -> [various VMs]

    Thanks.

Troubles with new Edgerouter X + UAP-AC-Lite combo

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 04:08 PM PST

Hey! So, recently I have been looking for a better router, since the one I had was iffy. I decided to post on reddit to ask for some advice. Here is the link to my previous post:

    https://np.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/adyxfj/tips_on_buying_a_wireless_router/

Based on the recommendations of other people, I decided to buy the Edgerouter X + UAP-AC-Lite combo. So far, it has not gone as smoothly as planned.

First, it took me about 4 hours to set up; 30 minutes to follow a guide on Youtube, and 3.5 hours to figure out why the hell the router wasn't showing up on the Unifi Controller (Software) so I could configure it so it would actually work. After watching multiple videos on Youtube, googling, and desperate reinstallations, I finally got my router to show up on the software magically. It finally worked without it showing an error message with no detail as to why I even had an error. Then, it had some trouble initializing.....that was a pain in the ass too.....

BUT ANYWAYS my most concerning issue is that this new setup actually seems slower than my last. My housemates and i seem to have slower, less responsive internet no matter which band we are on (the 2.4GHz or 5GHz). Sometimes it will be okay though...and there aren't many people using the internet at the time. The router doesn't seem to be overloaded....but it feels like the QoS it has does not work well. What really upsets me is that now anytime I decide to chromecast onto my Google Home speaker, my music always stops playing fore a few seconds every minute or so....it comes and goes. It is very annoying....

Also, everytime I want to see what my router is up to through the Unifi Controller, I have to reinstall the stupid software because otherwise it won't initialize for some reason.... I have updated java and tried other versions of the controller as recommended....

Did I make the wrong decision? Maybe I should go with the TP-Link I mentioned in my old post that I linked above.....help...

Apartment wired with ethernet cabling but no RJ45 sockets

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 03:44 PM PST

Recently moved into an apartment with a patch panel and coax and network wiring to all rooms. I noticed that the ports in all the rooms were too small for RJ45 cables, they look like RJ11 ports. I thought I was wired for a phone network but in the panel the network cabling is labelled "6r cat6 southwire signal 97200 4pr utp type cmr".

After googling the cable, it seems to be designed for ethernet. I've reached the limits of my hardware knowledge. Is it possible to change out the RJ11s in a room and replace with RJ45? Am I out of luck on the ethernet front?

I was planning on toning for the cable to my room and attaching an RJ45 jack on the corresponding cable in the panel to attach to the comcast router. I have a tone and probe and crimper/jacks. Am I stuck with running a 50ft patch cable through my apartment?

Websites load fine sometimes, other times are slow/incomplete/fail completely using a MOFI4500 4G LTE modem/router

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 03:31 PM PST

I have a MOFI 4500 modem/router with a Verizon SIM in it. I have a Windows 10 laptop connected with a network cable.

I am experiencing a weird problem where seemingly randomly, webpages will not load completely, some won't load at all, some will take a long time to load. Also speed tests using the Speedtest.net app will fail and my Dropbox for Windows app will stop syncing. All the while, pings to google.com are consistent and low. Without changing anything, this problem will go away and websites will load perfectly, Dropbox will connect, etc.

I have connected different devices (Windows 7 and 10 desktops, Android phones) to the router both by wire and wirelessly, with the same behavior. Again, sometimes things are perfect but then other times everything but pinging fails.

I have tried adjusting the MTU on the built-in LTE modem. Any idea where I can look or how to troubleshoot this further?

    periodic packet loss every minute?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:27 AM PST

I was having big issues with periodic outages (imgur) so I got a new router -- Orbi RBR50, and updated to newest firmware. Now I'm getting periodic packet loss [1], [2] on my desktop computer, connecting with a usb adapter. When I first started timing the packet loss they were in intervals of 60 seconds, then the next time I timed it it was every 40 seconds, but always exactly in those intervals.

Anecdotally, it seems to have been fine until some people came over and connected their devices to the network. Could this be wireless interference from too many iphones or something? How should I go about troubleshooting this?

edit: When guests left the house the packet loss immediately stopped. So could it be a rogue device like an ipad that is messing things up?

Looking for Router Recommendations - AX?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 11:14 AM PST

    Hello,

I've recently moved into a new place that has service through comcast, so I signed up for their 400mbps tier. I had to replace my modem as my old one didn't support those speeds, so I bought a Netgear CM1000 which supports DOCSIS 3.1. Now my problem is that my old router isn't supporting the speeds I'm paying for. I tried hooking my laptop directly to the modem and got close to 500mbps on speedtest.net, but when connected via wired connection through my router it's more like 200mbps. My current router is a few-generation-old Apple Airport Extreme.

So now I'm in the market for something new, and future-proofing a little would be nice. I'm currently looking at the Netgear AX8 router, which I realize I wouldn't be able to utilize to the fullest yet, but it would be nice to not have to replace it again in a few years when AX hardware is more prevalent. But then of course, there is the price difference between that and an AC router (about $400 vs $250). I'm not an expert with networking stuff, so I'm looking for recommendations on what to do here. Wifi speeds are less of a concern, but I would still like to have good coverage - I'm in about a 1200 sqft apartment currently. My current Airport Extreme has full signal from anywhere in the apartment it seems, so I'm sure anything newer will have similar or better coverage.

I'm open to spending $400 if that's the best option, but if there's a cheaper option that will work just as well I'm up for that too. Just looking for others thoughts :) Thanks!

    Newbie network layout question

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:15 AM PST

Very easy question. When designing a network, is it best to have APs all coming from same switch, or could you have APs linked to different switches?

My setup doesn't look like I can get APs all off the same switch, so I'm wondering if I can go : router > switch with a couple of APs > switch with 1x AP and TV etc coming off it?

Will the speed of the AP linked from 2 switches be impacted in any way, rather than just coming off 1 switch?

I'm thinking of Ubiquiti UniFi setup.

    Thanks!

Getting ethernet from ISPs "Wifi box"

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 02:44 PM PST

My apartment complex has a ISP which provides wifi to the entire complex. They recently installed "Wifi boxes" in every apartment (I am not sure if it is a router or access point). This wifi box is installed in the ceiling and has one cord hooked up to it which goes into the ceiling so I dont have an ethernet port to connect to. Anyways, the connection is very unstable and I am trying to get an ethernet connection for my PC. I tried connecting an ethernet cord from my PC to a port on the wifi box which reads AUX... I have not been able to get any internet on my PC from that and troubleshooting says that "Ethernet does not have a valid IP configuration." My apartment manager has told me that its not possible to get Ethernet but I'm not sure if he knows or cares whats going on.

I can upload pictures of the wifi box if that helps, thanks for your help!!

Slow ookla speed test but no problems gaming or streaming

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:42 AM PST

Just decided to see how slow this is by actually using the damn thing and everything is fine. Ultimately it doesn't matter why this is happening since it all seems to work but I'm curious if anyone knows what's going on.

Recently moved into a new house and we have 4 routers to select from. I need help choosing the best one and how to optimize it!

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:34 AM PST

I'm new subscriber to this subreddit, it's nice to know it exist!

So, I'm currently at a crossroads and can't figure out which router in the best selection for our home. I've done some research on the specifications of each but I can't decipher which router would work best for our situation.

Last week, we moved into a two story home. The entire living quarters are on the main level. All three bedrooms are right next to another down a single hall, which is connect to the living room- where our modem and router is. The downstairs is a unfinished basement, that I plan to hard wire Ethernet cables through the floor, and along the basement's ceiling/rafters.

My Roommates and me are gamers. We often game independently on our personal systems while playing different games. Some days, we all game together on our personal systems, while playing the same game together or in a party. So we really want to optimize our internet speeds.

Here are the routers we can select from: https://imgur.com/a/p1jKTsN

    Sagemcom Fast 5260

    Asus Dual Band 3x3 RT-AC66U

Ubee DOCSIS 3.0 Advanced Wireless Voice Gateway (Model: DVW32CB) This was left by the previous owners.

Google WiFi w/ 4 separate nodes.

So, when Spectrum hooked up our internet last week, they installed the Sagemcom Fast 5260

I ran a detailed network statistic over my Xbox One S w/ the Sagemcom router.

    Download Speed: 450 Mb/s

    Upload Speed: 19.20 to 20ish Mb/s

One of my roommates, (that owns the Google WiFi), insisted we should give it a shot. I was reluctant because I like hard wiring my connection. I didn't have the time to run Ethernet cables while we were moving in last week. So as a solution, I decided to set it up and experiment with it.

I ran the same network speed test- on the node that is the primary router/node connected to the modem

    Download Speed: 330 Mb/s

    Upload Speed: 18-19 Mb/s

[So i was not liking those results, losing 100 Mb/s just to run an AImesh. So I just counted Google WiFi as a "no go"]

I previously owned the Asus RT-AC66U, I know it's a solid router. I haven't hooked it up at the new house and ran any tests on it. I know its a powerful router but I'm unsure if it's the correct fit... or if it's as powerful as the other routers that we have.

Lastly, the Ubee Advanced Wireless Voice Gateway (that the previous owners left). I honestly don't have any ideas about this one, even after looking at the specs (lol I'm still a bit of a green thumb). It seems to be an absolute unit but idk what it is capable of or how old it is... etc.

Any advice and or guidance would be much appreciated, have a great day!

    Choosing the best router

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 02:18 PM PST

I recently upgraded to 1gbps internet speed.

My initial set up is as follows:

    Arris SB8200 Modem

    Netgear Nighthawk XR500

Since my ISP provider COX does not allow for two IP addresses I am set up ISP>Modem>Router. I am hardlined to my Xbox for gaming from the router.

I thought I was set up pretty nice, but the DumaOs software with the nighthawk is killing me. I have had nothing but problems and have spent hours trouble shooting. I've seen mixed reviews on this router, maybe I'm an idiot. I had better connections on my Xbox when I was using a Modem/Router Combo provided by my previous ISP Century Link at 40mbps.

Does anyone have recommendations for a different router? Sorry if this is not the right place.

Edit: I'm a noob when it comes to this stuff, just looking for advice. From what I've read the whole gaming router concept is a gimmick that I bought into.

    Router recommendations

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 10:14 AM PST

Any recommendations for routers (preferably tri-band) with very good range (for a large house)? My internet speed is 260Mbps down and 50-70 up. I bought the ASUS GT-AC5300 rapture and returned it twice (both times its signal was too week even weaker than a 70$ router. I've looked online but I'm still confused and not sure what to get.
