    Simple Questions - February 26, 2019

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 04:12 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

What's the cheapest cpu and gpu I can get for 144 fps on high settings

Can someone explain this to me better: “The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports. When the M.2 slot is populated, two SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports are disabled.”

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 02:01 PM PST

This is a compatibility not I got on PCpartpicker when I tried to add a m.2-2280 ssd with a Kingston A400 SSD. Does this mean the computer wouldn't recognize both because one is disabled? Thanks.

    Help understanding different M.2 drives

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 07:52 AM PST

I'm looking to upgrade to an M.2 drive in my laptop. When shopping, I've noticed two types of physical connection ends: two small sections at each end, or just one. What's the difference (is this the PCIe 3.0 x2 and x4)? Are they related to an NVMe or SATA interfaces? Do they fit into the same slot?

Also, am I correct to be looking for an M.2 drive with an NVMe and not SATA?

One last thing, can I just do a fresh install of Windows 10 onto the new drive and everything will be good (i.e. will I need a product code or some kind of verification, or does the laptop take care of that)? I have a physical copy on a USB drive.

Let me know if you need any system specs of my laptop.

    Thanks in advance!

Sanity Check: Building husband a PC. Especially stuck on the video card.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 08:21 AM PST

    Hey all.

So I thought I'd be the "cool wife" for once. Planning to Amazon Prime some components and surprise the husband with a new PC this weekend. I am a sysadmin, but it has been YEARS since I've dived into a personal PC build especially geared towards gaming and I am so out of the loop.

I am looking for a sanity check on the build, and especially the following questions:

    • Should I be looking for a RAM clock speed above DDR4-2666 or is that pretty negligible? Looks like this is the fastest the motherboard will support without overclocking, and TBH, memory overclock is something I've never done.
    • What video card to get? Goals: 1080p at 60 FPS, BUT with room for futureproofing. He has an older 24" 1080p monitor he loves and I don't think he plans to upgrade it, but never say never. I would feel comfortable if this could run 1440p, full res, ultra settings at 60fps in the very least in case he does upgrade the monitor. At this time I don't ever see him purchasing a 4k monitor. What is a good, reliable video card that can handle this? If I can accomplish this for ~$300-500 that would be ideal, but I would be willing to go up to $700 (...cringingly).

Here is the parts list so far. I already have the power supply and 2 SSDs. I might just RAID 0 them together since I have them vs. buying an nvme drive.

    • i7-8700K - $370
    • Hyper 212 EVO cooler: $25
    • MSI z390-A motherboard: $130
    • Corsair Vengeance RAM 16 GB DDR4-2666: $100
    • NZXT 500i case: $100

Does the parts list look good? Any recommendations for changes, etc? I really appreciate the second set of eyes on this.

Only 2 of 6 RAM slots working after aftermarket air cooler installation!

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 08:43 AM PST

    Parts: i7 920, Asus P6T, Corsair XMS3 6 x 2GB kit, Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo.

I installed the aforementioned cooler yesterday and only noticed the problem today when I tried gaming. Now only slots 3 and 6 work.

I have tried loosening the cooler and tightening it down again to ensure it was even. I have also verified that each memory module works in slots 3 and 6, so I have determined that it is an issue with the board. I just can't figure out what.

    Thanks in advance!

    Edit:

I took the CPU out and couldn't see any bent pins. While the cooler wasn't fastened to the board I started up the pc again and had 4 of the six lanes working.

Difference in brands: GeForce RTX 2060

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 03:47 PM PST

I've searched and haven't found anything particularly helpful, especially for a lay person.

How do the different brands stack against each other? Are there quantitative differences that could be explained? Overall, which brand(s) would be recommended, and for what reason?

2 graphic card in one pc, with 2 different use

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 11:55 PM PST

    Hello reddit !

In class I was thinking about 2 graphic card in one PC. But 2 different use. For example :

    1x GTX 1070

    1x GTX 970

One is for playing video game, obviously the 1070, and one is for encoding the video to a stream software here the 970.

So I can play with the 1070 and stream my gameplay ( played with the 1070 ) with the 970.

Is it possible ? or Im just a dreamer ?

    Worth upgrading to 2070 now?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 06:04 AM PST

Hi guys, I recently had to buy a new CPU and motherboard since my previous pc got damaged from a faulty PSU.

I bought a Ryzen 7 2700x, but I am still using my GTX970. I feel like the card is really holding back my performance in games and I was wondering if it is worth upgrading to a RTX2070 now, or wait for a new card (possibly from AMD?).

I want to be able to run any modern game with as much frames as possible (preferably stable ~200 fps+ on 1080p on low settings as I prefer competitive fps games such as CS:GO, Overwatch, Fortnite, Apex Legends etc.)

Any help or advice would be appreciated :)

240 hz monitor, LG 27GK750F - monitor seems to be stuck at 60hz

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 12:26 PM PST

    Hi all,

this is my first non-60hz monitor and I was just wondering how do I get it to 'unlock' from 60hz? I've tried every option I can think of in my pc and on the monitor itself, but when I go into the display settings on my pc it says 60hz max, and in the monitor options (via hardware buttons) it also says 60hz

    thanks

Building a pc for my girlfriend. I think it's ready for purchase. How did I do?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 05:54 AM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yep

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Hi y'all! Building a pc for my girlfriend this time. She wanted a Sims machine, but I convinced her that she'd better invest a bit more into a machine which will set her up for years of gaming. Right now she enjoys creative games, but she's happy to play some Borderlands as well, so I guess she might dabble a bit more into shooters as well. Don't have to build for the quick-pased FPS games though, that won't spark her joy.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Beauty is important to her, so even though the framerate ain't to important, she does want to max out games.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Budget is not an issue for her, per se. She'd rather have a good build than a cheap build. Right now, I'm aiming for €1500 excl peripherals.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    The Netherlands

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

[FEEDBACK] How is this build for VR?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 01:24 PM PST

This is the build I am planning to build within the next few months.

Is everything compatible with itself? Should I make any changes?

More importantly, how will it run VR? I know it's above minimum recommendation settings, but how high can I bump up most games without sacrificing performance? Thanks!

EDIT: Changed the CPU to Ryzen 5 1600x.

Should I go with a 500 gb m.2 or a higher capacity 1 TB regular SSD

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 05:17 AM PST

For 150 dollars I can either get a 500 gb 970 evo or I can get a 1 TB Samsung SSD. I am building a PC soon and plan to use the m.2 for my game storage, and Star Citizen will probably be around 300 gb alone plus any other game. I do have a 4 TB hard drive though.

hi im building a new setup soon and I need a new chair. I'm willing to spend around 300$ give or take and I spend a high amount of time in my chair.

I was reading that generally expensive office chairs offer the most comfort when compared to "gaming chairs". Would appreciate any help or suggestions thanks :)

Should I get this used RX 480?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 04:35 PM PST

So, here in eastern Canada it has been hard finding used GPUs cheap (especially since I don't have a job and am working with a fixed budget of $200). So, I found a Sapphire Radeon Nitro+ RX480 8GB card for $220 CAD on Kijiji, so I haggled him down to my $200 budget.

I'm kind of having second thoughts, and I don't know if I should take the offer. I am at 1600x900 60hz (on a tv) and am looking to upgrade from a GT 1030 2Gb DDR5 card.

So, do you guys think I should take the offer while playing games like Apex Legends, Warframe, or Minecraft (it's still fun :))with very high shaders?

No monitor signal but PC motherboard and gpu lights and fans turn on

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 02:09 PM PST

This is a new PC and as the titled stated I'm getting no monitor signal. Lights and fans are coming on. I've checked my connections twice. So far I've tried 2 monitors and a HDMI that works and a new DP cord and still no signal. I've tried taking the ram out and trying them in different spots and by themselves. When it powers down I am hearing the motherboard beep, but only when powered down.

    CPU Bottlneck Concern

    Posted: 26 Feb 2019 04:02 PM PST

I've got an i5-8400, a 1070 and 16GB RAM. I have been offered a 1080Ti for $700CAD and I do have some interest in the card. My only concern is that my CPU will bottleneck my system. I play at 1080p 144Hz with the intrigue to upgrade that somewhere down the line but I'm content right now. I play all sorts of games but right now a good bit of Apex Legends and almost anything else that strikes my fancy. Any help will be greatly appreciated! If I left anything out that would be helpful just ask and I'll do my best to respond as soon as I can.
