Coaxial cable thats plugged into power outlet? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 12:06 PM PST Does anyone know what the purpose of this is? Does it function as any other cable line in the house? If I move my modem to this will it provide internet? Here is pic http://imgur.com/gallery/oZMKDzu [link] [comments] |
Does having two VPN runnning make a double tunnel? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 04:08 AM PST I pay for a VPN but I realized that my password manager has a built in VPN as well and I paid for that too. If I run both will it be like a tunnel encapsulated in another tunnel? For a more secure usage or is it just redundant [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2019 07:27 AM PST Hello, I currently live in the country and only get 25 download and 2 upload on a Bonded DSL line. I am curious if its possible to have 2 bonded DSL lines bound together, So i would have 50 down and 4 upload. If this is at all possible what do i need to buy for this to work? I can sweet talk my internet provider into giving me another line to my house so thats not a issue [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2019 07:38 PM PST So I haven't done much with dnsmasq (anything). I want to do a few /24 on my network. Can I do more than one /24 all off the same server? I plan on running it in VM, so I could do many instances but that sounds icky. How could I set this whole thing up? [link] [comments] |
ATT Fiber - How do I extend range on a 2 in 1 modem/router combo using a new router? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 01:02 PM PST Hello, I have ATT Fiber and it comes with a 2 in 1 Modem/Router combo. The problem isn't necessarily the speed but the range. Certain areas of my home have really crappy coverage and buffers a lot while streaming, gaming etc. I'd like to buy a really good router so that my entire house has coverage. I was considering putting the 2 in 1 router combo in bridge mode, but after research it sounds like I am unable to do this on the ATT hardware. Can anyone confirm this? What are my options here ? Thank you!! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2019 06:41 PM PST Looking to get a modem to replace the one that xfinity gives us so I don't have to pay the equipment fee every month. What is the best option under $100? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2019 06:28 PM PST Hey! Got a few questions. I have a pretty successful twitch channel and I want to make sure I'm maximizing my connection. I have everything hard wired aside from my phone to a Motorola modem, Netgear Nighthawk Tri Band AC router, Nighthawk Ethernet Switch and 400 Mbps down with Spectrum. 1100 sqft condo. At most, Netflix is running in the background at 1080p not 4K. So questions: 1) Should I hardwire my Xbox and computer directly into the router? It's currently hard wired to the Switch. Does it make a difference? 2) I have Cat 6 Ethernet cables, should I go to Cat 7? Without fiber does that make a difference? 3) Anything else I'm missing ? Hahaha I don't have a bad connection just have to deal with spectrums inconsistencies. Any help and feedback is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Wifi slow on phone, great on laptops Posted: 26 Feb 2019 10:47 AM PST Hello, I have a basement office which has 2 laptops nearly side by side. One has an acceptable connection, the other has a good connection. Both are connected to the same network. Meanwhile, my phone, also connected to the same network, has a connection that is unusable when I am in the basement office. In other parts of the house, the connection is fine. Why would my phone have such a poor connection but the laptops are fine? [link] [comments] |
Advice for running cable in ceiling? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 02:30 PM PST Hey all, My cat6 install is going to happen in 4 days, very excited. When it comes to running the cable through the ceiling, does anyone have any tips / suggestions for best results? Is it better to run them in conduit? Along the ceiling floor or suspended along the rafters (to avoid existing electrical cabling), anything else? I was planning on leaving about 1m excess at each end for future changes / rewiring. Doing about 40 points around the home, longest will be about 25 meters but the average will be around 10m, and I have 6x 305m cat 6 rolls (planning on using the left overs for another place after). So frugality with cable ia not an issue. I also have access to up to 200m of this if useful: https://www.clipsal.com/Trade/Products/ProductDetail?catno=9020CMS I want to get it right and do it right! :) Cheers [link] [comments] |
Faster Fiber Internet, but slower connection for a particular game. Posted: 26 Feb 2019 09:10 AM PST I was wondering if this sub could point me in the right direction with an issue I am having. I have FTTP internet, very low ping, 13ms, 100 down 100 up internet. But booting up a game I play, "Fire Emblem Heroes" (game from Nintendo) on my Pixel XL or iPad, it takes about 45sec - 1 minute for the little loading logo to go away and the game to launch. This never happened on my old internet, same company, but a DSL line, 50ms ping, 7 down 3 up speed, the game launched instantly. It also launches immediately on my cellular connection. So something is not being routed correctly with my new modem / connection. Same ISP as my DSL line. But I'm assuming my fiber connection is being routed differently or the new modem has a firewall issue? Is this a routing issue with my ISP? If so, how? My slow DSL (same company AT&T) line was immediate load times. Is it a port blocking issue? If so, wouldn't the game not work at all? Any help would be great! Thanks for reading! [link] [comments] |
Looking for a 75 foot Cat6 cable, does brand matter? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 05:36 PM PST I just need a longer cable so I can run it through the walls rather than across my floor. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2019 01:48 PM PST As the title reads, I'm having a blast going through this confusing mess spectrum calls a website. Thanks for taking time out of your day to help me guys. Note: I will be providing my own router Issue 1: The DEAL they advertise (from my understanding) is for 24 months of 44.99 USD, my old plan only lasted 1 year and then went up to $65. I want to make sure I'm getting it right and that its for 24 months. Issue 2: Whenever I click this I goes automatically back to the one with 400mbs and the price doesn't change. I'm guessing that my price will still be 44.99 but it will probably be higher after the promotion ends. Thanks again for helping me out. Im asking this because I kinda don't want any surprises, this time lol.... [link] [comments] |
Trying to work with a home network that I am slowly outgrowing, have some switch questions. Posted: 26 Feb 2019 01:35 PM PST I have a Netgear R7000 that's been serving me will with the hacked ASUS XWRT Merlin firmware (or w/e it's called) My 3 TL;DR questions are:
My home network used to be fairly simple. Gigabit Internet into the router, one GigE out to my desktop, one to my Xbox One, and then one to a GigE switch with 8 ports for other devices that don't necessarily need the full 1 Gbps at all times, like my Hue lights, OG Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc. I don't remember exactly what kind of switch it is, other than that it is 1. metal 2. unmanaged 3. has 3 different sets of ports, high, med, and low priority, so I guess it has some kind of dumb QoS? I caught the /r/homelab bug, and now I have a server that needs 3 connections on its own, 2 GigE, 1 for IPMI. I might re-connect an old 8-port Linksys 10/100 switch downstream from the first switch, or directly to the router (would appreciate guidance), along with some of the other devices that don't need any type of consistent download speed at all, or are limited to 100 Mbps, like my UPS, Xbox, Hue, etc. The server supports NIC teaming, which as I understand it will allow it to use both NICs simultaneously or allow for failover. Will I cause a problem if one is plugged into the router, and the other to the switch? I want to see if I can do something easily before I go for an EdgeRouter and a noisy 10GigE rack mounted switch I don't want to deal with. I'm only really looking at this because I now have storage on the server (RAID10 hard drives, RAID0 SSDs) that can easily saturate GigE, which I wasn't really expecting! I've also got a WD MyCloud EX2100 that has two NICs and can handle teaming. I want to maximize throughput to/from the NAS and the server, and especially between the two. [link] [comments] |
One directional antenna with MIMO, or all omnidirectional? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 01:17 PM PST I'm building a WiFi repeater for our RV with one of these PC Engines APU2 boxes and a UniFi AP-Lite. Campgrounds don't tend to have the best WiFi coverage, so I'd love to use some sort of high gain antenna. I'm using a 3x3 MIMO wireless card in the APU2 (Compex WLE900V, to be exact), so it has three antenna ports. My plan is to get one directional and two omnidirectional antennas. The idea being, if the signal is weak, the card can make use of the directional antenna as a non-MIMO link, but if it's strong enough, it can still take advantage of the other two antennas (maybe even saving me from aiming the directional one).
I only know the basics about MIMO, so I have some questions. 1. Will that work like I'm hoping? 2. If the campground WAP doesn't support MIMO, do I stand to gain anything from having a client with multiple antennas, like maybe beamforming or some sort of special error correction? Bear in mind, campgrounds aren't known for blazing Internet speeds, so my concern is mostly with reliability, not raw throughput.
And bonus questions: 3. If the answer to number 2 is yes, is a directional antenna even worth it? Could three good omnidirectional antennas with "multi-antenna magic" perform similarly, and then I don't even have to aim it? 4. Is there some other antenna strategy that would be a better idea? What does it mean when a modem says its speed is "Up to 450+1300 Mbps"? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 04:42 PM PST Specifically this one https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-routers/R6400.aspx I'm pretty sure it goes up to 1300 Mbps, but I'm not sure what the "450+" means. Does it mean it ONLY goes from 450 to 1300? Does it mean it can actually go up to 1750 Mbps? Because that doesn't sound right and I'm not sure how to figure this out other than ask since I'm not sure how to Google it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2019 04:34 PM PST I posted previously about trying to get away from a problematic Orbi setup and got some great advice. I have spent some time searching through the sub as well as the Ubiquity site. I have come up with the following plan and would like to see if anyone sees any obvious problems: ATT Fiber Modem
One requirement of this network is to have 3 VLAN's- guest network that would be exclusively via WiFi, primary network that would include a mixture of WiFi and ethernet traffic and a dedicated network for smart home/internet of things. Specific questions/areas of concern:

Separating my AP from my home network Posted: 26 Feb 2019 12:39 PM PST I'm trying to figure out what I need to do to put my wifi on a different subnet, but still access my dhcp server using a different scope. I currently have a ubiquity edgerouter poe, going to a tp link semi managed switch. My AP and server are both hardwired to the switch. How would I separate my AP traffic on a different vlan and still pull dhcp from my server? [link] [comments] |
Parental control help Asus RT-AC87U Posted: 26 Feb 2019 10:16 AM PST I'm currently running an Asus RT-AC87U with a nighthawk s-8000 gaming switch. my son needs to have time limits because he would always be on if I didn't. My problem is that his wired gaming PC is scheduled to turn off at 8pm. If he is mid game or has a website open, he can continue to Play or browses until he leaves the website or disconnects the gaming server. I am willing to buy a new router if it's a router issue. Any help would be great Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
WRT Merlin - VPN client to interface? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 04:12 PM PST I am trying to setup an openvpn client on a port vs over the whole network so I can assign it to a vlan through my switch, making it much easier to manage and pick which devices are to be routed through the vpn or direct to the internet. Anybody know if this is possible? I'm having trouble finding it if so, but either way, I assume it's done through console. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2019 10:02 AM PST Hello, I am not super knowledgeable with these things and we currently have the Netgear Nighthawk AC1900. We have a switch, PS4, Xbox, iPads, phones and out internet speed is currently 300mpbs download. We find that our wifi drops frequently or streaming isn't the best quality. I have just upgraded our internet to 600mpbs download and thinking about upgrading the router to ASUS Wireless AC2900 Dual-Band Gigabit Router (RT-AC86U). I was wondering if I could get some opinions on if the router is a big increase in quality from what I currently have? Thanks for looking [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2019 03:39 PM PST Hey guys my wife and I are going to be moving into a new house and I have the option to wire in some cat6 drops around before we get ourselves settled so I intend to do it. I'm thinking our best bet is a simple 24port unmanaged switch (I can't really think of why I would need to manage one) with patch panel. Can anyone suggest a good unit for mounting in a utility closet in our house? I would prefer a small rack that I can put up near the ceiling against the wall. It needs to house a Dlink NAS, Arris XB6 modem, Unifi USG router, the switch, the patch panel, and likely something like a foscam NVR. I have no idea what features to look for in a switch and I'm seeing a range of 24 port options going from $80cad to $500+. The rack is also a bit of an unknown, I'm guessing for adding a shelf to hold all the non-mounted stuff something like a 4U might be nice? [link] [comments] |
New user. Looking to build ethernet at home, want cables from router to stations Posted: 26 Feb 2019 03:38 PM PST I just purchased a newer home, it already had a Calix 844-G installed, serviced by fiber. I will be setting up a business office here, and have specific things in mind to put on a home network/Ethernet. I really do want to keep it all hardwired, no wireless signal from all my business stations. Specifically a workstation for architectural drafting, bidding projects, daily business routine, occasional mechanical drafting, and 3D modeling and printing stuff. So there would be a drop for that, one for the home computer, printer, 3D printer, surveillance system with ip cameras, a NAS storage server. some of this would i believe be able to be in the server rack/cabinet, is that correct? I have done some research, but have a few things that i don't know if i'm misunderstanding and want clarified. Is it possible to hook that Calix router into the network switch and have dedicated internet in the ethernet system? There are 4 ethernet ports on the back. I know how to set up each component after the switch, i just got lost in the stuff before it. [link] [comments] |
Help a dummy out: router and more for short term rental Posted: 26 Feb 2019 11:39 AM PST There's a main house for Airbnb and a private tiny guest house, 50 feet apart. Stucco exterior. First, what router should I buy? No budget. ISP is main house only. I am planning on: 60mbps DSL, buy whatever modem Century Link brings. I will be running one 4k roku TV, guest devices, and 2 wireless security cams that need 2.4ghz. (I could also do xfinity but have so much trauma haha) I want to put the modem and router in the locked laundry room away from guests. It will be just behind the TV wall. I could use powerline adapters to connect? Does this slow it down? Part 2 is getting wifi in the guest house. Laundry room and guest house are less than 50 feet apart, two stucco walls. Needs here are very basic, just surfing and phone, not much streaming. Can I use an extender, and if so, what should I look for? The buildings are metered and wired separately. As you can see, I'm very low-tech skilled, so any simple suggestions or help with my plan would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Help with some recommendations of second hand networking equipment to look out for? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 11:18 AM PST I live in a tech hub, and a lot of companies go out of business and/or upgrade their networking gear. A lot of their networking equipment finds its way onto Craigslist or local recyclers. I'm setting up an automated alert when some networking equipment gets posted on the local Craigslist (using IFTT). I currently have Gigabit at home and would like to get more Enterprise grade equipment. [link] [comments] |
Poor internet unless connected directly to the modem Posted: 26 Feb 2019 02:33 PM PST Hello all, I've been having troubles for the past 7-8 months(on and off) where my internet is slow(roughly 70ms slower) unless I am connected directly to the modem. I have swapped out both my modem and my router 3 times, and the situation stays the same. Sometimes my internet will be fine, and won't be slow whatsoever, other times the only way to avoid this delay is to be connected directly to the modem. This generally stays this way for days-weeks before switching to bad/good. I have absolutely no idea what's going on. [link] [comments] |
