    Simple Questions - February 13, 2019

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Why there ae not many IPS 144hz monitor while so many laptops has IPS with 144hz.

    Posted: 12 Feb 2019 10:25 PM PST

I was looking for a monitor to buy for my first build. I found that there are very few 144hz monitor with IPS display. Almost 70% are TN and some are VA. And those which have both the technology cost so much. But there are so many laptops available with 144hz. Why is this technology not common in monitors?

First ever PC build complete, thanks to everyone on here

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 10:40 AM PST

    Hello folks,

Pics first 'cos that's what everyone wants to see https://imgur.com/a/9PzH3UL

Built my first ever PC build this weekend just gone. After lots of reading, more reading and asking stupid questions that were kindly patiently answered on here, my PC is up and running.

The build went smoothly and it posted first time which I was very happy about. The only hitch I had is that I had the AIO mounted on the front of the case and when I came to install the graphics card it would not fit. A bit of a pain but the AIO was soo relocated to the top of the case so no biggie. I know it's not some RGB monster but I like it a bit understated.

    Here's the part list

Thinking of getting 2080ti and Predator 144hz for anthem

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 01:08 PM PST

Hello, I was going to buy a black magic camera but I recently bought a 2700x Ryzen 7 this last thanksgiving and my gpu is bottle necking at only a 1050 gtx. My memory is 32gb.

I only play dota and diablo 3 though. I got to test the anthem beta and it was kickass. But is it worth spending $2000 on for the predator 144hz monitor and the 2080ti combo to compliment it? Sounds to me that I'm spending $2k just to play 1 game.

Any other games that are beautiful that can push my rig to its limits and also be a game I like? I just play dota and diablo.

    Thoughts on this new build?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 04:34 PM PST

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/FDJGFt

Anything you would change for better perforamnce with that budget? I know 32gb ram is overkill. Mainly for gaming, I play 1080p @ 144hz and plan to upgrade to 1440p (144hz) soonish. Is it worth waiting for the new Ryzens to launch to see how they compare in terms of price/performance to an 8700k?

What's the best AM4 (ryzen) motherboard for OCing?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 04:27 PM PST

New post, other one was not clarified enough.

I will be using it to game on, no streaming, editing, recording..etc

Looking to OC the Ryzen 7 2700x to it's max of 4.3ghz and RAM to 3200mhz

Would like to have some RGB lights on the board it's self, as well as the board having ARBG pins.

Specialty features such as bios reset button and easy bios navigation is preferred but not required.

Worth getting Rx580 for cheap now?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 12:49 PM PST

I'm being offered a new Sapphire Nitro+ SE Rx580 8gb for $180 and I'm wondering if that's a solid deal. However, I'm not planning to build until at least late 2019, so I'm not sure if GPU prices would drop further and I'd find better deals. I'm planning to pair this with a Ryzen 7 2700x, resolution 1440p, refresh at least 60hz

144 Hz vs 240 Hz monitor

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 03:32 PM PST

I was wondering which is better for gaming and why? I have a 1050 TI GPU at the moment and am aware it can't hit 144 but I was looking to upgrade to a 2070 and see a 240 Hz monitor on sale. Would it be a good idea to get the 240 Hz monitor with the RTX 2070?

Confused American living in Lithuania looking for help with building a PC - Any EU friends care to weigh in?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 03:32 PM PST

I'm looking to build a Ryzen 5 2600 / RX 580 / 16GB RAM. I noticed anywhere I look on LT sites the prices are a good deal higher than anything I would find on the US sites (20-30%+). I expected maybe 10-15% at most but the all around 20-30% (even on pcpp for my current build) seems a bit out there... I know that the closest Amazon warehouse is in Germany so I checked lots of the parts on the DE amazon and things are still a good deal more expensive. My current PCPP US build is about 21% more expensive here in the EU, but I may have to fit different parts to lower the price when considering my US build had many good value parts in it.

    My US build: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/butterypanda/saved/qJ8pGX

Same Build on DE site: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/user/butterypanda/saved/qJ8pGX

Other than switching up my parts for better EU deals and checking out /r/buildapcsaleseu what are some good tips and tricks to get the most out of my money and time here?

Is it worth it for me to get a 144hz monitor?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 04:52 PM PST

I am wondering if it is even worth it for me to get a 144hz monitor. I was playing Apex Legends earlier on the 60hz monitor I am borrowing in 1080p and noticed that on average I was only getting about 80-90 fps on all setting maxed out. Here is my build:

I looked up some benchmarks for my GPU afterwords on User benchmark and noticed that while yes this card can reach 100+ on certain titles, it averages 80-90 on a lot of titles.

If my card is not reaching 144fps regularly, is it even worth it to get a 144hz monitor? I guess I am not exactly clear on how all of this fps/hz stuff works.

    Thanks in advance!

    Finger on the Trigger

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 02:32 PM PST

Ok folks, I've been hemming and hawing over my next build and I think I have it down. My previous builds (2) have all been cut-and-paste from someone else, but I wanted to have a go at it solo. I will readily admit, although this isn't my first build I am still an amateur. I wanted a MicroATX form factor with a video card capable of 1440p at 144hz. PLEASE let me know if I missed something or have made a mistake somewhere.

    Cheers!

What is the most accurate measure of colour reproduction for monitors?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 04:38 PM PST

Two terms to express colour quality seem to be the most common: sRGB coverage and amount of colours. However, I've seen 16M colour monitors get over 100% sRGB coverage and 1B colour monitors get below 100%.

IPS and VA are known for better colour reproduction than TN. However, I've again seen cases where TN panels seem to get more sRGB coverage than their VA and IPS counterparts, and they often seem to have the same amount of colours (16M) too. Does this mean that TN monitors are able to achieve IPS colour reproduction, or that I'm looking at the wrong specifications?

75Hz 1440p IPS/VA monitors can't have both FreeSync and high DPI at once?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 04:26 PM PST

I'm looking for a 1440p 75Hz monitor with good colour reproduction. Strangely enough, there are only monitors I think may be too big for me (Philips 328E9FJAB), or monitors that lack FreeSync (Lenovo L24q-10). My build is able to run 70fps @1440p, sometimes going back to the upper 50s for a few seconds. How bad would that be without FreeSync?

Should I get one of these monitors, or is something better soon to become available?

    1440p / 60Hz vs. 144Hz

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 06:20 AM PST

    Hey guys!

The last upgrade to my computer was around 2012 and recently I've read through tons of specs, infos and whatnot to get a bit up to date once I upgrade it in a few months. That made me stumble upon refresh rates and all that stuff. I wasn't even really aware about 144Hz in the first place.

So here is my situation: I don't often play games and if so I tend to play single player games (strategy, simulations, occasional FPS) or Medal of Honor Allied Assault in multiplayer. Yeah I know, quite unknown but it's a gem. :)

Now some people claim that even while doing everyday work on the computer they notice the smoothness with a 144Hz compared to a 60Hz screen. Is that true and would it matter at all with my normal usage?

I'm sure I will benefit from the higher resolution if I have a 27" 1440p screen compared to a 24" 1080p one but I am very unsure about the refresh rate.

On top of that I would like to use a dual screen setup with the second screen at 60Hz since I usually just use it for coding or similar things where a second screen is useful.

I'd be happy about any input to that topic!

    Finally convinced my Friend

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 03:31 PM PST

My friend is going to get a PC for gaming, He has a budget up to 800.00. He has never built a pc before and is nervous about the process. He doesn't live by me so he is on his own for building but I really want to set him up with the best parts list available.

Please critique my build below and let me know what changes can be made. He has a 1080p 75hz freesync gaming monitor so that has been my target. He plays a lot of fortnite, Destiny 2, Apex Legends and probably Anthem and Division 2 if they're any good and will most likely get into streaming with Streamlabs OBS. I was initially trying to work in an rtx 2060 but I dont see a way ...

Are the Corsair Force MP300 120 GB M.2 PCIe Gen. 3 x2 NVMe-SSD and the Asus TUF B450-PLUS GAMING compatible?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 11:44 AM PST

    Hey,

    The 32Gb/s M.2 SATA- & PClE-x4-Mode descriptions confuse me.

If i googled correctly the above ssd has a sata connector or sth, so i have to switch some mode?

Also do i have to enable the detection of the ssd on bios (i dont have windows installed and wanna install it on this so its kinda important)?

    Thank you for answers!
