Most efficient way to blow away Windows & restore for documentation purposes (Acer Spin 5) Posted: 26 Feb 2019 09:01 PM PST Programmer, but haven't used Windows seriously for 20 years. I'm writing some technical documentation that involves installing software. I have an iterative process that involves writing down all the steps, installing the software, removing the software, then rinse and repeat to ensure the instructions work. Traditionally this has not always worked well for me, because sometimes uninstalls can leave config files, registry entires, and so on that distort walkthroughs because default values have been silently changed or configurations have been modified silently. I've purchased an Acer Spin 5 for this. 256GB SSD, 8GB Ram, i5, so mediocre power-wise. This machine will be dedicated to that one job. So for example I'll install Golang or Postgres, write some programs using them together, then blow it all away and do it again. Live, die, repeat. Is there a way to roll back installs of that nature under Windows? Or do I have to do a factory reset after installing, say, PostgreSQL, then wanting to return to the non-installed state for test/doc purposes? Ideally I'll be able to install Ubuntu or Debian too, maybe via Virtualbox, for the same purpose (e.g. instructions on how to install Golang on Ubuntu). Is that feasible under Windows 10? Thanks much! [link] [comments]
Suggest me few good 16 bit windows games. Posted: 26 Feb 2019 05:40 AM PST I am turning 16 next month, I want to celebrate my 16th birthday by playing 16 bit windows games. I have already downloaded 32 bit windows xp on my virtualbox(32 bit windows xp supports legacy 16bit software), So, please suggest me good 16 bit games(with download links), which can run on following specs: 1024 mb RAM, 256 mb VRAM, VboxVGA graphics card etc. [link] [comments]

Will a big hosts file slow down internet speeds? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 09:24 AM PST I did some testing with Python, and a near empty hosts file would complete the code in 0.2ms, while an extensive file could use up to 4ms. It was basically a foreach loop to check if each line included a domain name. Will Windows be slowed down as well? [link] [comments]
Looking for a random keyboard type macro Posted: 26 Feb 2019 06:36 PM PST Hi everyone, i'm looking for a keyboard type macro that will type from a selected pool of text that I have entered. To give an example I would like it to have a number of letters/sentences/text to choose from and have the macro type them out every so often, or randomly. If anyone knows of a program like this I would be much grateful, its for a video game so I dont get logged out in case anyone was wondering. [link] [comments]
In need of a good windows laptop to edit with. Advice? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 06:15 PM PST I'm a college student so I need something affordable. I want to be able to use Sony Vegas pro (or I guess it's called Vegas pro now) without the lag I got on my old windows laptop. Any recommendations? [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Feb 2019 09:39 AM PST Hey everyone, so I've bought a surface keyboard (not the Type Cover, but this one: https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/p/surface-keyboard/8r3rqvvflp4k?icid=Cat-SurfaceAccessories-Mosaic1-SurfaceKeyboard&activetab=pivot:overviewtab) and am quite happy with it as it resembles the Apple keyboards I use at work quite well. However, I do not like the way some special keys are mapped. For example, I have NEVER missed a "Clear" keynor do I need the other keys above the numpad but could use them for some other stuff. Is there any way to change the keyboard mapping, without messing all too much in the registry? btw I'm running WIN 10 Pro 1809 [link] [comments]

My windows has started to keep weird noises, and I can't figure out what is doing it. Posted: 26 Feb 2019 05:25 AM PST I recorded the sound, here. The noise can come right after starting the computer up, and I don't think I have anything suspicious in startup programs. [link] [comments]

Since an update, Chrome doesn't load and Edge use 2.7GB of RAM for one tab Posted: 26 Feb 2019 04:04 AM PST Hi Since I updated my Windows 10 x64 PRO (24-Feb), Chrome desn't load any website or takes too long. I've flushed my DNS, reinstalled Google Chrome, manually configured my Internet connection through 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and it still takes forever to load any website. I'm using for now Edge but it eats more RAM than chrome. 10 minute of reddit, and one single tab uses 2.7 GB of RAM Any advice? [link] [comments]
3rd party Trackpad settings on Dell PC? Posted: 25 Feb 2019 10:56 PM PST Hello, sorry for my noobness but I'll get straight to the point of what I am looking help with. So I have an All in one PC (ik ik, but it makes due) and it's a Dell. Instead of a wireless mouse, I purchased a third party wireless trackpad. This one to be exact: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HF4VG4V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It works adequately - I can do most of the gestures such as double tap, 3-finger swipe up and down, 4-finger tap. However, I'm wondering if theres a program or something to install where I can customize the settings? For example, to change what 4-finger swipe UP does. Yes i've tried in my general settings, and device manager. There is no 'trackpad' option, only 'mouse'. Help? Thanks in advanced [link] [comments]
