Help files open in Chromium. How do I make them open in Firefox instead? Posted: 06 Feb 2019 05:07 AM PST Using Mint. When I double click an HTML file it opens in Firefox, my preferred browser. But when in a program and I click help, it opens the help page in Chromium. Any idea how I can fix this? I need to keep Chromium for testing purposes, but otherwise I want Firefox for everything. EDIT: solved: settings -> preferred applications. Thanks, u/noolarama [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Feb 2019 10:40 AM PST The apache document root is in /var/www/ would that be the drive that is 50GB and says 5.2GB free? If so how to I allocated some of that 417GB free space on /dev/mapper/vg_webserver-lv_home to it? [link] [comments] |
Update security levels and safety Posted: 06 Feb 2019 09:44 AM PST Hey everyone, after recently getting Linux mint 19.1 cinnamon as my first linux distro, i always happily updated everything that the mintupdater told me was "in need" of an update. Thus, everything that had a new version available got updated. However, i never really gave much thought to the security level and downloaded each and every 1-4 update that i could get my hands on. Without knowing how to fix anything on Linux, if a problem were to arise, or how "safe" some updates actually were. Now, to my question. Should one care about these security levels? Or is everything one can download and update from said updater "safe and sound"? And shall i roll back to the earliest version i have of my system (screenshot) and just install all 1-3 updates and skip everything above? Thanks in advance for your answers. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:25 PM PST I installed Debian (9.7) on an Asus E203MA TBCL432B notebook computer via USB, but the network card had no driver and the touchpad was not recognized by Debian (though the keyboard worked). When I tried an Ubuntu LiveCD (18.10), however, everything worked without issue. I tried a Debian-nonfree LiveCD as well, just to see if that had the drivers I needed, and that also didn't work. Is there a way to know why Ubuntu worked with this computer but Debian did not? A way to compare software to see what Ubuntu has that Debian does not? [link] [comments] |
The only thing keeping me from deleting my W10 partition is... Posted: 06 Feb 2019 05:59 AM PST Managing to get my hdmi sound output to work. I get video, but the audio hdmi device doesn't get even listed in the output selections. I have tried plenty of suggestions i found on the web, pulseaudio volume, etc...I have a Nvidia geforce gtx in a Hp omen i7 laptop, and i am running UBUNTU 18.04. I have used this hdmi cable plenty of times in w10, so it's not the cable or tv fault.Any help is appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
What is Manjaro doing that other distros are not? Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:30 AM PST Hopefully I don't step on any toes with such a question but this stems from my curiosity as well as lack of knowledge, I can assume others may think this as well. According to DistroWatch.com Manjaro gets the most hits per day and has been ranking at number 1 for quite some time now. After all, it's how I picked it. I have been using Manjaro i3 for 2 months now and unfortunately, I am going to have to change due to a conflict my brain has when changing from a Mac book to my desktop. (My study requires a MacBook, for some reason). So yeah, it just got me thinking. What is that Manjaro is doing differently that makes it so approachable? [link] [comments] |

Best lightweight penetration testing distro for an old laptop. Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:28 PM PST I was looking at blackarch until I seen it's 64bit only. Fairly sure this old laptop is 32bit as it's about 15 years old. Pentium 4, 480mb Ram. [link] [comments] |
How to clone disk to small size image? Posted: 06 Feb 2019 05:43 AM PST Hi, I trying to find a program that can clone disk which contains several windows partitions. In windows I can use programs like Acronis True Image or Lazesoft Image & Disk Clone which easily compress windows (35GB -> 22GB). In Linux I can't find this type of software. Clonezilla doesn't work for me(errors are shown when I choose directory). DD clone all disk, even with empty space, and created with it image has same size as cloned disk.. [link] [comments] |

What's the most noob friendly KDE based distro? Posted: 06 Feb 2019 11:12 AM PST I've been using Ubuntu classic for a while. The big appeal of linux for me is being able to fine tweak and customize my desktop theme/appearance and I hear KDE is more flexible than GNOME. I'm aware of Kubuntu and KDE Neon but dont know which would be best for a relative noob [link] [comments] |

Computer restarts after selecting Ubuntu in grub loader Posted: 06 Feb 2019 08:47 AM PST I installed Ubuntu on my pc using software that installed it on then c drive and let me dual boot into it. I then selected to completely install it and remove windows 7. It said it installed fine and then asked me to reboot. When I do it automatically goes into grub loader and when I select Ubuntu it restarts my computer again and does so every time I select Ubuntu. I'm very new to Linux so would appreciate any help. Lock computer but continue to show desktop? Posted: 06 Feb 2019 08:26 AM PST I'm running Raspian on a Pi that is powered on during the day and displays my Calendar, Trello board, etc... I want to be able to lock the computer (manually or after a period of inactivity) but continue to show the desktop and open apps. It'd also be nice to be able to hide the login prompt until a key is pressed or move it to a corner of the screen so it doesn't obstruct the view, if possible. I've done some searching and haven't found anything helpful. Any ideas? Note, I currently have it configured so the monitor stays on and the screensaver is disabled. I just leave the computer unlocked, but my toddler now finds it fun to "go to work" and start pressing keys so I want to find a way to lock it but still display everything. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Feb 2019 07:45 AM PST Hey, CS undergrad here. I wanted to try linux a while back and so I decided to dual boot Ubuntu alongside windows on my rather crappy laptop. Since then, I haven't used windows on my laptop even once. I'm loving linux. So I wanted to know how I would go about removing windows. It was a clean install of windows so there are no files that I need to keep. Also, does removing the extra OS provide any performance benefits at all? Basically what I am asking is, is there any incentive to remove windows? Apart from the hard disk space? I was so surprised by how much I liked ubuntu that I was even considering switching my desktop, but I play a lot of PC games and I don't know how well linux does gaming. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Feb 2019 07:14 AM PST I am a (reasonably) experienced user of a laptop, but am completely defeated by how to download and install Linux. I have a copy of Mint on a usb, but then the instructons for checking the download are unclear to me. Is there any technical reason why this cannot be done automatically by a few simple clicks without messing around? Or am I just a Windows user who is destined to stay that way ? I would dearly love to leave the Microsoft environment but seem to be stymied at every turn. [link] [comments] |
WiFi Adaptor (TP-LINK T4U) issues in Xubuntu Posted: 06 Feb 2019 05:14 AM PST Currently using a fresh install of Xubuntu (necessary for work) but having issues with the adaptor - am new to the Linux game. Short: running 'lsusb' in terminal suggests that Linux isn't identifying the device as a WiFi adaptor, but detects something nonetheless. Long: running 'lsusb' identifies that something exists in the port but it doesn't really know what it is (it detects my mouse, keyboard, usb etc but just shows nothing for the WiFi adaptor). Thought it might be a driver issue, found the correct drivers and extracted them to desktop but most of the help I've found online seems to requires installing packages from the internet in order to install the drivers (i.e you need internet to get internet). Can anyone give some advice/point me to where I can find out how to solve this? Much appreciated. Update: Solved - cheers u/ginosanti and u/DoctorKnockboots. [link] [comments] |
