    Battery life seems pretty good

2070 MQ better than we thought - looks to be on part with 1080 Laptop/MQ, but certainly not quite 2070 Desktop level (not expected to be)

Question about charging my LG Gram 13

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 01:49 PM PST

I just found out this laptop supports charging with USB C. The laptop came with the proprietary one but I'm wondering if I should get a usb c one instead. Would it charge it slower, faster, or the same? Also, if I were to get a usb c charger, what wattage should it be?

I was getting a boot device not found error so I sent it in. I have back ups but will they have to wipe it? The error happened when I was reseting my computer but something went wrong during the process. Also, The shipment was received by the HP today (2/6) and that the estimated return date is 3/1, is it just me or does that seem like a long time

    Laptop Water Damage

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 01:17 PM PST

Got water on my laptop. I turned it off and let it dry off for a while tipping in on the side and getting water out. after I bet I turned it back on and it was loading but then it's didn't freeze but it stopped loading and suggested I restart it so then I just turn it off completely. I've now left it on a towel upside down to just in case drain out any remaining water and let the rest go away. Is my laptop okay like there are lights where the battery are so it's not completely dead but the light color is purple so I don't know what that means? Thanks in advance.

YOGA 710-15IKB Metal bottom bent, Replacement?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 12:17 PM PST

My Yoga that I've had for a while has a bent bottom and the keyboard slightly bows up. While it doesn't do much to the computer itself, it's a bit annoying. Unfortunately I haven't the slightest idea of whether I can get a replacement bottom or not. Can I, or is it all stuck together?

MSI GS75 (RTX 2070) deal, I did this...

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 08:22 AM PST

Last week I pre-ordered MSI GS75 (RTX 2070) from Fry's for $2108 including tax (California), using their secret password (saved $500). If you are able to get a password by email or on FB live stream (which I did last week), you can save 20%, even items that are not yet in the store. As long as the item you are requesting is in their computer system, you are good. This is from my email from Frys...

Save an additional 10-20% off Wednesday, use the secret word "HUMPDAY20"

This Wednesday in every Fry's Electronics store, the first 25 customers will receive a 20% off coupon, the next 25 customers will receive a 15% off coupon and the next 25 customers will receive a 10% off coupon. Minimum purchase is $199 and up.

To get one of these lucky coupons, mention the secret word "HUMPDAY20" to the Fry's greeter at the entrance of the store.

\Coupon not valid for some Sony, Bose, Samsung, LG, Nikon products, all Point of Sale Activation Cards and Gift Cards. Speak with a sales associate in store for details.*

This is the MSI item on their website...

Incase anyone is wondering why I bought this laptop, I would use it for Cinema 4D, Premiere, Photoshop, minimal gaming. Power, room for modeling and pallets, and minimal presence was important for me.

Now I got to wait for this baby to arrive.

    What do you guys think?

Looking for a thin 14 inch laptop, budget max 700€

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 05:53 AM PST

Hi guys, I need some help regarding the purchase of a new laptop.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 700€, Germany

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Build quality, handiness and specs are most important to me.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? very important since I need to use it on the go a lot

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Yes, it has to be 14 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not really, but it would be a plus if simple editing software and CAD would work stable. Games maybe Minecraft and LOL, would be great if Fortnite works but sure if that's possible for this price. In general gaming is not that important.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The laptop is not supposed to be used for gaming apart from some small stuff to pass time, see above.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality is of high importance for me, I like it when the laptop feels high-quality, especially the materials.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The main use of the laptop will be streaming and watching videos and doing things for school / work like simple Office stuff and programming. It is important that the laptop is easy to carry.

Looking at the HP Envy 13 (2018), any thoughts or other suggestions?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 11:21 AM PST

So I'm looking for a new laptop as my laptop is about 4/5 years old or so now, and I also need to get one for university as well. I like editing videos and light gaming here and there, so I wanted one with a dedicated GPU inside, but because of university I want one that's compact and portable.

I am currently looking at the HP Envy 13 as it has everything I'd want (16GB of RAM, 512GB of SSD storage, i7-8550U, MX150) and it is 'only' £1099. I say only as that's the cheapest I've seen for a laptop with those sorts of specs, but I wanted to ask if anyone has any reason I shouldn't get this laptop or if anyone knows of any laptops that are even better value.

    Thanks!

Manufacturing flaws to look for in a new laptop

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 10:28 AM PST

So I pulled the trigger on a 2019 MSI GS65 Stealth a few days ago, and it should arrive on Friday. Pretty excited, since I've been using a $200 Chromebook for a few months (long story).

Anyway, gaming laptops are hardly known for their amazing quality control, and it was pretty expensive, so I'd like to make the best use of my return period.

On that note, what do you guys think are "flaws" to check for? Physical issues are obvious, but I guess I'd also check my thermals and look for backlight bleed. Is there anything else I should ook for? Or should I stop stressing and enjoy?

Otherwise, I guess I'd undervolt and debloat. But I'm not really sure what else to do. It's been a long time since I've had a new laptop.

Anyway, any answers or relevant experience would be greatly appreciated!

Looking for a good laptop recommendation ($1000 limit)

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:34 PM PST

Looking for a new laptop (my old one just went kaupt after 5 faithfull years). I'm poor, so the school is helping me out by giving me $1000 bucks to spend (after taxes). Anyone know of a good laptop? Preferably one that will last a long time (and maybe play games very well?).

I don't know a ridiculous amount about computers, but I'm guessing one with a great graphics card, CPU and 8 (hopefully 16) gigs of RAM?

    Laptop performance development

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:36 AM PST

    Hi guys!
    I have a Lenovo ideapad 720s-13ikb.
I'm playing Overwatch on medium around 35 fps. I hang around with it... However, I was thinking about upgrading it with an external GPU. The laptop has a thunderport port.
I'm very lost, and I wanted to ask whether it is a good idea. I can't really afford to buy/build a pc, and this laptop is very good - especially that I mainly use for school ( but of course, by night, for gaming.)
If ex-GPU is a good idea, what type is good enough?
Would this laptop handle it well?
I would rather invest in an external GPU, then starting from scratch.
    Thank you!

Anybody else getting bored waiting for Intel 9xxxH processors?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 08:27 AM PST

The past 3 CPU generations they've released a new lineup just over a year after the last so it should be Q2 but it's still a tough wait. I'm hoping to finally get an 8 core Coffee Lake Refresh H laptop (music production, video editing and gaming needs)

Thinking to buy a new g5 15 wth rtx 2060: some questions

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 07:14 AM PST

Hi, I'm leaning towards the new g5 that came out in january 15 with rtx 2060, i7 8750h, 8 gigs of ram and 128 gb ssd + 1t hdd. I have multiple questions and this is becoming very hard for me so I'll be very very happy if someone can help me figure out if this is a good choice.

Question 1: Does dell have a warranty policy so that if i switch the 8 gigs or the 1t hdd with some improved hardware i loose the warranty?

2: Is 8 gigs of ram enough? What does more ram help me do better?

3: Do you have informations on the fan noise? Is it high, low, is it loud when not under stress?

4: Do you have info on the battery life? Will i be able to take notes on it for 5-6 hours?

5: Will I be able to connect it to an external monitor and use the g-sync?

6: Please add any new helpful consideration. I've been struggling with the choiche of a new laptop for months now, and I really think this might be the one. Tell me what you think about it sincerely

    Struggling with laptop choice

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 06:16 AM PST

Hey all, I am currently looking for a light portable laptop. Which is fast enough to do activities such as bootstrapping and also has a good keyboard for writing essays / coding. Currently I am looking at the LG gram 14 (I5), and the HP Envy 13 I7 + mx150. Both I can buy for 900€, which is about my budget. I like the HP a little bit more but I willl not really make use of the video card, since I do my gaming on a console. Also the fact that HP has DDR3 bothers me a little bit. However, it seems to be of a better build quality and has way better speakers compared to the LG.

Does anybody have any advice which one to choose or maybe a possible alternative option?

PS I missed a great deal on the newest gen Asus Zenbook, without a promotion I think they are a bit too expensive.

About to buy a Lenovo x1 extreme, any advice or warnings?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 01:45 AM PST

I'm buying the model with the i7-8850 and touch screen, but I worried about the heat issues that causes the owners some trouble. I am fine with the fans making noise, but it's just that I'm worried that excessive load will raise the temps too high and damage the laptop (automatic shut-down), as it did my current laptop when I was playing video games. Other than that, the specs seem to be great and I look forward to buying this laptop.

Now I'm not concerned about laptop size at all. If there is a laptop with similar specs with a bigger size, then I think the heat issue will be resolved. If you have any laptops you'd like to suggest, I'd appreciate it.
