First time buying a laptop, using it to code.

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 11:45 AM PST

I am learning to code and that is the primary use of the laptop. I want something small but not too small and cheap as I'll be playing no games (got a pc). So as cheap as I can go and still get my work done efficiently. I do want it to be aesthetically pleasing if possible.

Edit: around or under 500$ would be ideal

Nvidia Optimus won't work correctly giving really poor battery life

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 02:49 AM PST

I've the gs65 with 1070maxq, it used to switch back and forth between dedicated and integrated graphics but, now it just keeps using the 1070 all the time (orange indicator is on instead of white). I've updated my drivers, Nvidia is on 418.81. I'm getting really bad battery life🥺 (2-3 hours with WiFi and RGB off). I uninstalled MSI afterburner too coz someone said that could be it, but hasn't sorted it for me. Running 1803 windows 10. Please help me out !!

    Mini Display Port Not Working

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 01:41 PM PST

My mini display port sometimes stops working on my MSI GE62. I'm running a dual monitor setup with one plugged into the HDMI port and the other in the Mini Display port. For some reason, the mini display port stops working and the 2nd monitor doesn't receive a signal. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and I know its not a cable issue because it works with my Macbook. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Has anybody here ever replaced the screen of an XPS 13 or 15? How easy/impossible is it?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 01:15 PM PST

I can't find a guide anywhere. I have the Precision 5520, which is pretty much the exact same as the XPS 15 9550/9560 ie. it has the 'infinity screen'.

It looks like I'll have to get a heat gun to get at the panel. Just want to know if anybody has done it before. I can't find even one guide or post or anything online. Which leads me to believe that it's impossible. The dell service manual shows how to replace the whole display assembly only.

    Anybody help folks?

Just to confirm I'm asking about replacing the LCD screen only, not the whole assembly.

Laptop fan starts and stop pẻiodically

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 12:50 PM PST

I use a MSI GE70 2PE Apache Pro. The computer works fine, without any problem, temps are fine.

But the fan spins for about 3 seconds, then stop for about 1, then starts again, rinses and repeats. Apart from that nothing seems wrong. Fan makes no noise, no sign of friction, misaligned bearing, etc.

When I turn on turbo fan mode it runs flawlessly, temps are fine too. Still doing gaming with no throttling.

Do I really need to replace it, cause I did so 2 days ago. The original fan was broken, so I replaced it with an other fan that fits, but not the exact same. Plus the "roof" does not cover entirely to the fins, it has a small gap in between. The new fan is actually for newer MSI models that utilize 2 fans, but my laptop only uses 1 fan.

That's the only fan that fits, it's been almost 5 years, I can't find any store that has the most original fan for this laptop anymore.

    What's your advice?

Laptop Won't Work Properly Until I Restart It A Couple of Times?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 12:38 PM PST

    Hello everyone!

    I recently got a brand new laptop, (specs: GTX 1060 6GB, i7-8750H, 32GB RAM, 2TB HDD, and 256GB SSD)

Now, it ran perfectly well yesterday. However, when I tried turning it on today, it would boot up, and once it went to the desktop it would run well for a few seconds, and it would then just completely freeze up.

I could still move the cursor and highlight folders, however, nothing was opening or working. I went and restarted it a couple of times until it finally started working.

Is this anything to be worried about? Is there something wrong with my laptop? ANy help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

    Lenovo Flex 14" Laptop, Intel® 8th Gen i5-8250U, 256GB SSD, 8GB DDR4, Win 10 Home for $560. Is this a good deal?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 10:40 AM PST

Hello. I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong subreddit, but I seeking advice on a possible purchase.

It is a Lenovo Flex 14" Laptop, Intel® 8th Gen i5-8250U, 256GB SSD, 8GB DDR4, Win 10 Home. It is regularly priced at $800, but is on sale right now for $560. Would you consider this a good deal for this brand/model/specs?

I will be using it for school, which is mainly research and word processing, and for web and graphic design and development. I just really need a portable device and this came up in my search. I really don't know too much about laptops, as far as like spec to price.

Thank you in advance for any and all help!

please pretend i'm 5 & recommend the best laptop for making/editing youtube videos. Thank you :)

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 10:39 AM PST

I want to start a Youtube channel. I've never done this before, so I was wondering if someone could give me a push in the right direction as far as what kind of laptop is required to run editing software efficiently. I'm not much of a tech wiz so any advice on laptops or editing programs would be appreciated. Also, I would want to keep it to a couple hundred dollars, but $1000 is kind of a soft limit. I'm willing to pay for quality. Thank you!

Laptop wifi not working after new wifi card

    Posted: 12 Feb 2019 08:01 PM PST

I have a Dell XPS 15 and just replaced the wifi card. I replaced the Killer card to an Intel 7265. When I booted windows, the card doesn't work. Device manager says error 10. The laptop doesn't have Ethernet so how do I fix it? I tried downloading the Intel Driver but it opens, and then closes without doing anything

Where should I get a keyboard key online

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 10:19 AM PST

Hi! I own an Alienware 15" R3 2018, and recently the keycap of the 'S' key came off and its not able to be put back again. Asking my local laptop repair shop, they asked me $170 for a single key, so that was not an option. What's a reliable website to get a keyboard key?

Any Places to View Gaming Laptops in the UK?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 09:54 AM PST

I'm currently interested in upgrading to a GTX 1070 laptop once the prices have dropped following the release of the RTX series. I think it would help to see some gaming laptops in real life, rather than just looking at them on a computer screen.

Are there any places in the UK where I can look at some gaming laptops on display?

I have already tried Currys/PC World but they only had an MSI GE63 and Dell G5 on display. John Lewis didn't have anything better than a GTX 1050 laptop.

    Is this battery dead?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2019 11:39 PM PST

    Hello,

Yesterday, I bought a used battery for my HP Omen 17-w100no, because my previous one died (or rather it is working, but has swollen incredibly and I prefer not to use it). I put the "new" one in the laptop and I immediately noticed that there is something wrong with it. It says "plugged in, not charging".

I tried solving this issue using common methods for fixing this kind of problem as I know for a fact that sometimes, it might just be a driver issue or battery not connected properly. Unfortunately, none of the methods worked so I used a diagnostics tool and propably discovered the cause of this. I say propably, because I'm not an expert in electronics, but here are the results of the diagnostics. The summary says that cell #4 is damaged having 0mV, but I noticed that some people have had this issue as well and their batteries would at least hold some charge. Also, the weird thing is that the cycle count is at 1 which is very strange for a used battery.

Is there anything else I should try before I send it back? I read somewhere that I could try to charge to battery for 24 hours, but does it even makes sense when it doesn't seem to charge? Doesn't matter whether the laptop is on or off.

Brand New Zenbook Pro 14 brutal heat when charging

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 08:12 AM PST

I've had my Zenbook Pro 14 (UZ480FD) for less than 24 hours and have had it plugged into charge twice (downloading my usual programs so didn't expect the battery to hold up); however when plugged in my laptop gets stupidly hot, the fans run on what sounds like max (I've only really heard 2 settings). Checking CPUID HWMonitor, i'm averaging 85 degrees celcius with it capping out at 95 degrees the last time it was checked; all whilst nothing is really happening par from a maxmium of 2 tabs in firefox and one program downloading at a time.

Unplugged there's no issue, the fans run quietly if there's a bit more going on like playing OSRS whilst I wait for the current download to finish. I've not checked the temps but the laptop certainly feels cooler.

I know this is a really small laptop and expected to get about as hot as my Macbook pro 2015 did when I had that, but this gets MUCH hotter only when plugged in, regardless of what I'm doing. Do I have a faulty device or is there something I'm doing wrong? Windows was the first thing I updated, then drivers. Looking at the power settings the performance is at max when plugged in, but when doing very little I wasn't expecting the machine to burn up so fast.

    Thanks

    Well Priced Laptop Build?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 07:26 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I'll be honest, I know little about laptops and have been researching all these budget laptops and the ability to add components like adding a nicer SSD and improving the performance x2. I love macbooks but I'd feel like a fool spending that much if I can buy a cheaper laptop, upgrade it a little, and have to perform as well as a macbook. I'm not going to be picky about price range, just want to hear some of your opinions in regards to what I'm looking for. What would you do?

I bought a $200 Lenova like a year ago to do exactly that, but then I hated the design of the keyboard and quality of the track pad. I never upgraded it for that reason so it's slow as shit. I think I went too cheap on that one lol.

I just need an every day, easy to use laptop for work, notes, research, and maybe some illegal streaming :) Won't be playing any games on it. Thanks all

Using mic in port as an audio out port.

    Posted: 13 Feb 2019 06:57 AM PST

The headphone jack on my laptop has been destroyed, so I would like to know if it's possible to use the mic/line in jack and make it work as an output. My only other solution would be to get a usb audio card, but I would like to know if I can do it this way.

Edit: I didn't know which flair would be better, maybe software? Or does the whole post belong to a different subreddit?

    IdeaPad 720s: MX150 with 8th gen i5 processor - Worth it in 2019?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2019 10:47 PM PST

Amazon has the Ideapad 720s 14 inch with 16GB of ram, an i5 8250U, an mx150 and an SSD for just over $700. These kinds of specs at that price in a premium lightweight build seem great to me. However, I know it's an older laptop and there's new RTX cards on the way. For me, this laptop is the perfect mix of what I want in a laptop: good processor, lots of ram, and a low level GPU with thunderbolt 3 so I can add an eGPU in the future. So I know it's a good choice for ME, I was just wondering if this is a good deal overall.

    Thanks!

My Lenovo X220 i5-2520m idles at 50-53c under basic use, and goes up to 60-78c when charging, what's wrong?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2019 10:52 PM PST

So yeah it already idles at a high temp, but when i plug it in to charge the temps ramp up real fast to at least 60c, more often around 75c. It currently lasts unplugged either the same, or less time than it takes to charge it. Keep in mind it takes around 1-2hours maybe to charge the laptop, so often it'll only last an hour or sometimes less while unplugged.

I was meaning to replace the battery soon, but if it is the reason for the laptop running so hot even while unplugged should I get a new battery for it sooner? Could it be causing the high temps?
