A laptop for school and work (soon)

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:34 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase: I'm looking for under $800 (it can go a little over). I'm in the US.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? I'd rather just have a laptop that runs the fastest, so I'd go with best specs

How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd rather have a sleeker design, and not too heavy.

Which OS do you require? Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? I usually lean towards 15.6" but I can go as small as 14

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? I would just be doing basics stuff, but it does include some video editing and audio editing for a podcast

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't play games on my laptop

My current laptop is terrible. I've had it for 2 years and it was originally only like $350. It's very slow and it would be great to have one that doesn't have these kind of problems.

Suggestion on a robust laptop - Macbook Pro dual-core sufficient, or some other better ultrabook?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 07:39 PM PST

    Hi,

I am looking for a robust laptop that can last for many years, which can run the following simultaneously and smoothly:

a browser with around 30 tabs one of which has youtube running, a music player playing music, matlab, maple, around 5 pdfs, some latex editor.

Occasionally, i watch movies on the laptop, but at that time, in general no other program will be running, except a browser with a few wikipedia tabs.

I do occasional video editing, but using only ffmpeg.

I do not care about any type of touch/frills/tones etc., i just want something that works, but works without glitches/lags and lasts many years. My questions are the following:

    1. I wanted to get Macbook Pro (13 inch), the second option on this page - https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro. The first question is: Is dual-core with about 16gb of memory sufficient? Or is getting quad-core imperative?
    2. I had bought an hp spectre x360 (13 inch) for ~$1400 and had a terrible, terrible experience, and i'm finally returning it after about a year of usage and innumerable headaches and discussions on the phone with them. Due to this, i am wary about using windows again, but there are the Dell XPS 13 (developer/other) editions that seem nice. It will be nice to get an idea about how the Dell XPS laptops (quad-core) compare with Macbook Pros (dual core).
    3. It would be nice if the laptop is $1600-$1800, but i can stretch it to about $2000 in the worst case. I want only a portable ultrabook, so other suggestions are nice, but only if they are better than 1 and 2 above.

Thanks for reading and the suggestions (i'll keep editing the post based on the questions/replies).

    I5-8300h or i7-8750h?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 04:22 AM PST

Hi, I have did some research and I'm decide to purchase Asus Tuf FX505. However it comes with 2 spec which makes me so confuse.

I normally use laptop for browsing , set up and upload Wordpress blog, and playing some game like dota2, PUBG, rainbow six. I prefer frame rate could hit more than 60.

My question is, is i5-8300h is enough power for those work I mentioned above? If yes, I would just add the extra ram to save my buck.

Need a mobile Workstation (i m really behind on laptops)

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 04:08 AM PST

    I currently use a Samsung RC730 S05 from 2011.

I guess that is pretty much enough to say.

I need the laptop for programming ,writing thesis papers, video and 3d modelling and rendering aswell as audio production and cutting/rendering with Premiere / After Effects.

Gaming is not my primary concern but of course the above use cases will also allow for gaming.

Good Battery Life would be cool. I dont need a 4K Screen because a laptop is not big enough to appreciate it i think.

I have no idea whats hot nowadays. Price is not the problem although If the 2K mark could be avoided it would be good. But if its necessary and the laptop lasts me another 8 years like my current one has, duh.

Need help looking for a gaming laptop!

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 03:53 AM PST

    Hi everyone!

So, I'm currently studying programming, and for netbeans and such my old crappy laptop was barely enough, but now its crashing everytime I open Unity so I thought it may be about time, I gathered some money, got help from parents and finally on my way to find the perfect laptop for me.

Have in mind it's going to be my gaming station, so I'm looking for something as high-end as possible, I wouldn't treat it as a programming laptop, more as a gaming one.

    Ok so, form:

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

Flexible, but somewhere between 700-1k. Buying from Spain.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Dont really care about battery life, it should have some but it's just gonna work as a pc that moves from home, college, gf's home.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

As long as I can carry it in my backpack it's fine :)

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

A pretty nice plus, but not my main focus

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Already stated that, basically gaming, Im gonna be programming things with it, hopefully games in a future, but mostly is for gaming, I'm a junkie for indie games but I want it to move new games, a 1060 may be hoping too much but 1050 Ti or smth like that would be cool too.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

I'm gonna be playing the batmans and Lara Crofts on it, also maybe I'll get Anthem, so yeah, if it can move those (not on Ultra ofc) I'm happy with it.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Please let it have more than 2 USB ports and HDMI, but thats a staple right? Also of course all good add-ons would be cool, but again, not the focus.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

    Thanks for helping!

Looking for help replacing a laptop (General purpose, office, light editing and maybe light gaming as well)

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 03:29 AM PST

-Total budget and country of purchase: $1,000 - $1,500 (CAD)

-Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? I'd prefer to stay away from 2-in-1, battery doesn't matter so much, best specs for money preferably.

-How important is weight and thinness to you? It's not really

-Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows I suppose. Used Mac for the last 8 years but I'm starting to drift away from it. Too limiting in my experience.

-Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I'd like to stick around the 15" mark.

-Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'd like to make use of Lightroom, Photoshop occasionally for image editing. Gaming would be a bonus. Things like Skyrim, Fallout, etc. Nothing super intensive really.

-If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Really being able to game at all would be nice. I don't need super max or crazy fps.

-Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality and decent keyboard I suppose. I've grown quite accustomed to having a metal laptop so that would be nice, but not a requirement. Hoping to find one thats got a smaller SSD for the OS and a decent HDD as well.

My current computer is a late 2011 MacBook Pro. Used mostly for school & editing. Last couple years its been a basic use laptop and now it's getting ready to die. Trying to get a semi-decent replacement to take with me as I go off for RCMP training. So I anticipate a lot of typing, word processing, research (general school/study stuff). After that it'll probably be a general purpose machine until I can get around to building a desktop again. Haven't shopped for a machine in several years so any input would be greatly appreciated.

Was looking at the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 but not sure if there's a better option.

Trying to decide between 2 laptops and need your help

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 01:22 PM PST

Hey guys, first post here but just a quick question. I'm currently tossing up between the Dell G3 (15 inch) and the ASUS s410UN (14 inch)

Specs wise the Dell is superior, here is a quick summary of the two:

    Dell - i7-8750H, 16GB ram, 256ssd + 1tb hdd, 1050 ti you

    ASUS - i5-8250U, 8GB ram, 256ssd, MX150

I will be using it for University so probability is fairly important to me. However I'm not sure if the portability of the ASUS is worth the loss in specs. The only gaming I really do is league of legends.

How does the build quality of the two compare? Would I be able to get a days worth of battery from the Dell if all I am doing is typing notes? How do the screens compare?

I don't know too much other than what I've learnt on here so any insight would be much appreciated. My budget is 1600 nzd (about 1.1k US) and country of purchase is NZ

Thank you very much, sorry for mobile format and if need be I'll edit with the proper form.

    Travel laptop, Please HELP!

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 02:43 AM PST

Hello r/SuggestALaptop! I've been searching for a new travel laptop for the last month and I can't find anything that ticks all the boxes, please help.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Ideally less than €1000. I can spend more for the right laptop, but less is preferred. Living in Ireland.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I am looking for the best specifications for the money, I would like at least an i5 and 8gb of memory. I have a tablet, so not interested in a 2 in 1.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? This is extremely important to me as the laptop will primarily be used for traveling, so the thinner and lighter the better. Ideally a 13" screen, but I would consider 14" if the form factor was really small too.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I have always used Windows, but I would strongly consider Mac too.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferably 13", but might consider 14" too.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. 90% of the time the laptop will only be used for productivity work, such as Powerpoint, excel, word and emails, but I do occasionally do some video and photo editing. The editing would not be heavy and the clips would be short, so I don't mind if rendering takes a little longer.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I do very little gaming, so this isn't an issue for me.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard is needed. I would like it to be backlit if possible. IO is also important as it would be nice to do presentations without several dongles, but it's not a deal breaker if I do need some.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My current budget is €1000, but I cant seem to find a laptop thats powerful and thin for under that budget. My 2 favorite options at the moment are the DELL XPS 13 and the MacBook Air, but these are several hundred euro over budget. I'm just not sure if either of these are worth the extra money. Any help would be massively appreciated. Thanks!

Laptop for Design & Business- dare I turn to Apple?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 05:26 PM PST

I loved working on older MacBook Pros and Lenovo Thinkpads (never sure of the specific type). I currently have a HP I hate- bad matte resolution, plastic exterior, slow with Photoshop. Leaning the most toward MacBook Pro because I've put up with a piece of shit for so long and finally have money to treat myself, and aesthetics are important, but I've heard the newest models aren't any different than the 2015 version.

Using it for working: graphic design, hobby photography (so.. a decent amount of storage) and in the future for interior design classes requiring CAD.

Most important to me: speed, being able to run my applications, IPS, and something that's smaller and not going to break my back carrying it... while at the same time being sturdy enough to survive being carried. also THE LEWK- I lean toward Apple bc it's pretty and well designed but worry I'm paying too much and sacrificing quality.

Not currently gaming but may buy the Sims and waste my life away lmao.

Essentially: tell me what year and kind of either Mac or Nice Looking Windows Lappy will make me happy.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: US, around $1000 but if I can meet my needs for cheaper, or there are deals/ slightly older models to buy second hand, I'll be super happy. Will be pissed to buy a laptop from my uni store for $1200 and find it on sale in a few weeks.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I NEED IPS graphic resolution. At least 8 hours battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Important! Small lady on the go.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I prefer Mac, will deal with Windows.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" is my sweet spot
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD, the creative suite (indesign, PS), drawing programs, my wacom tablet.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality, good keyboard, good touchpad. Everything else irrelevant.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Gaming laptop Belgium (€1000-1500)

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:54 PM PST

Hello. I am looking for a new gaming laptop that I can purchase in Belgium from vandeborre, Bol.com, or any other website/shop around here.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: €1500 ideally. I can spend more but less is preferred.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I am looking for the best specifications for the money, I would like i7 preferably with a good graphics card and memory.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? The weight doesn't matter too much, I will be using a laptop table in bed so preferably not too heavy.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows!

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. At least 15'. Prefer bigger if possible

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming: Medium to high gaming use. Would like to be able to run games in high detail. Games like GTA and the Witcher are ones I would like.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I want to play many games, I want the laptop to be able to find new games to play as my current laptop limits me.

I would like to play games like GTA and the Witcher in high detail if possible. I want highest FPS I can.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard is needed. I would like it to be backlit if possible with lots of colour choice (like razer mouses)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I hope you can help me find a good gaming laptop for fairly cheaper. I found one on gamemania that I though would be good with an i7 and gtx 1050 but I thought that 1400€ for that is quite expensive

    Thank you.

[US] Design student looking for <$1000 portable laptop

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 07:24 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: <$1000, US. Cheaper the better, am college student

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No preference. As long as the battery doesn't die on me within a few hours when I'm doing things

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is more important, old laptop was 6lb and too heavy

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" max, preferably 13"-14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. The most I'll do is run Adobe CC programs (Illustrator, Photoshop etc.) but it's not a must. See bottom of post for details

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? 8-16gb of RAM. Capable of upgrading hard drive and RAM if necessary, but it needs to be a good deal

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm a graphic/web design student graduating this semester, and I'm looking for a portable laptop to carry around during school or interviews. I'll mainly be using this laptop for presenting my work, as well as general use and front-end coding. Being able to run Adobe programs is just a plus, especially if it won't cost much extra. I have a desktop at home for heavy duty. Thanks for the help!

    Device for note-taking and study

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 10:31 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 200-300 CAD preferably, a bit more of it warrants it. But ideally the minimum possible. Canada

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 form is a very big plus, and good battery life as well

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Quite important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Any actually, I am looking for basically something that let's me take notes, browse the web and won't lag on me with 10 tabs or something. A Chromebook probably fits me the best, but I am unsure which.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Small is good, something like 11" probably? Something smaller would do too.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. None of these

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No games

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard would be a plus. Don't really need touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So I already have this 17" monster of a laptop which fits everything I want to do, but it's getting annoying to lug it around to college everyday. So I just wanted a minimal device, whether a laptop or a tablet/keyboard combo exclusively just to take notes in classes, study while at college and a bit of web browsing.

Need a new laptop for school with mx150

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 09:30 PM PST

Hi, I need a new laptop for school that i can do a bit of casual gaming as well. I currently have a surface book 2 that i want to return as it doesn't have thunderbolt 3 meaning i cannot use a external gpu. I want a cheaper laptop but not too cheap that i can plug into a external gpu when i return home for proper gaming.

Must haves: thunderbolt 3, 4k display, the better mx150, 16gb ram, i7 processor, 15 inch display, fingerprint or face unlock, touchscreen and look good

I have found a hp envy x360 15t which ticks all of those boxes but wondering if there are any other options

I mostly play rainbow six siege and some casual fortnite or csgo. I saw online that it should be able to run at 60fps with low settings and 1080p.

    Thanks

I'm starting the coding bootcamp at Denver University in March and need a new laptop. The school requirements for a PC (my preference) are 8gb ram and a dual core 64 bit processor. I value performance far more than display and wouldn't mind dropping a grand on this. 16gb ram and I7 preferable. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Total budget and country of purchase: $1k US*

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money*

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 *

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? good keyboard *

Should I avoid U-series 8th gen i7 processors? Laptop for GIS and graphic design (USA)

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 10:19 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

First off, this sub is fantastic and incredibly helpful. I made this post yesterday asking for suggestions on a laptop that would be used primarily for GIS (specifically ArcGIS Desktop 10.6.x, mostly ArcMap but I want full ArcGIS Pro capabilities) and graphic design. ArcGIS is a very CPU-intensive application, so main concern is between the U-series of mobile chips and the H- or HQ-series. I've looked at the comparison of mobile processors on the sidebar and I've watched some videos but I still can't tell if I truly need the H-series. It seems that the real difference comes down to when the CPU is under a heavy load for a longer time. Furthermore, would a 7th gen i7 HQ be better than an 8th gen i7 U?

I received some excellent responses on my post and I came very close to buying the Eluktronics Mech-15 G2R Pro last night. I slept on the decision and realized today that I definitely would prefer a lighter, more portable laptop. I do not NEED a gaming laptop but I realize the specs I want are often only available in a gaming laptop. I'm even interested in 2-in-1s!

    My (flexible) requirements are:

    • very good CPU
    • decent GPU (at least GTX 1050, I won't be gaming much)
    • 16GB RAM
    • Portable
    • IDEALLY a touch screen
    • ~15" screen

So after some research and many reddit searches I've found a few possible options that fit my needs:

    Razer Blade 15 w/ 60hz screen, 8th gen i7-8750H, GTX 1060, 16GB RAM, 256 SSD, 1TB HDD (~$1,600 USD)

    • This honestly seems like an excellent laptop. Many of the reviews I've seen online sing praises for its specs, portability, and build quality. On r/razer, however, many people complain about horrible customer service from Razer, hit-or-miss quality control, and incredibly slow mail-in repairs. Also, I can't find any solid info on the long term reliability of this laptop. Its specs-to-price ratio is nearly ideal, however.

    Dell XPS 15 9750 w/ 8th gen i7-8750H, GTX 1050, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD (~$1,500 USD)

    • I was pretty enamored when I first saw this laptop. It's not a gaming laptop but has all the features I want, has a great screen for content creation, and seems very sleek and portable. It appears, however, that there are some deep-seated BIOS issues with the laptop along with some sketchy Dell throttling. There are tons of extremely positive reviews of this laptop calling it "the best laptop on the market" (not for gaming, of course) but there also nearly as many negative reviews talking about software and hardware issues alike. One YouTube reviewer, Matthew Moniz, said that the XPS 15 was his go-to laptop for years up until 2018 due to its current issues. Have these issues been addressed in 2019? I'm not sure where I stand on this one.

    Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme w/ EITHER 8th gen i5-8400H or i78750H ($150 difference), 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, GTX 1050i (~$1,700 to ~$1,900 USD)

    • I don't have a link for this one because I'm lazy. Basically this laptop looks fantastic and Lenovo is known for their great support and reliability. However, it's VERY expensive. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon seems great as well but contains the i7-8650U processor. Also, the X1 Carbon is nearly the same price as the Extreme. Are these laptops worth the price? Most models come with 8GB RAM standard which I don't like. I can't find many negative reviews of this laptop, however. Right now, the price is the biggest deterrent.

    Huawei MateBook X Pro Signature Edition w/ 8th gen i7-8550U, MX150, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD (~$1500)

    • This one also seems pretty dece. My main concerns are the 13.9" screen and the U-series processor. Otherwise, it seems like it has decent reviews and competes with the Dell XPS 15 and Razer Blade 15, aside from the weaker CPU and smaller screen size.

I've also seen a bunch of cool looking 2-in-1s with decent specs but they nearly all have U-series processors which turns me off. What do you all think I should do?

Recommendation for university laptop? So many google results D:

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:51 PM PST

New here but read the rules and going to try my best to adhere to them.

So, filling out the recommendation form, info is as follows:

    • $2500AUD (~$1820USD) max budget. Queensland, Australia
    • Good battery life (prefer GREAT) and higher specs for money most important. No interest in touch screen or 2 in 1 (I have a 2018 iPad Pro and hate fingerprints on laptop screens)
    • Weight and thickness pretty important, needs to come to uni with me and be light enough that I will opt to work on this over just sitting at a desktop PC
    • Prefer larger screen size (minimal bezels too)
    • May do some simple video editing for university assignments and may install easily-run games, but does not need to be too intensive. Will mostly be used for word/internet browsing but some extra grunt is always good
    • Would like a good back-lit keyboard, reliable build quality for the entire machine, fingerprint sensor not a must but if included is a bonus
    • Don't care about webcam
    • Good speakers would be nice, as well as sleek/attractive design for entire laptop

If you know Australian stores, I am looking at JB Hifi, Harvey Norman, Dick Smith or any other stores available in the Brisbane CBD... Thank you

Options better than this refurbished XPS 13?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 08:21 PM PST

Hi guys. I'm looking for a post-college laptop that is lightweight and portable, but durable. Not using it for gaming and super high quality graphics are not needed. Really just Microsoft Office and browsing for the most part. Please let me know if you can think of other options that will accomplish what I'm looking for at a slightly lower price point. Thanks!

Looking for a laptop around $450

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 08:17 PM PST

Looking for a laptop for around $450 for my brother. Can be a little over, but not too much. He'll be using it for school, using Google sites and some browsing and video watching, nothing serious at all. Looking for Windows 10, and a FHD screen. Was looking at the Acer Aspire E5-576-392H, which is $350. I'd upgrade the 6gb of ram to 8gb, to get dual channel should I just buy a 4gb stick and replace the 2gb? I'd also be upgrading the storage, buying a 500gb crucial mx500 m.2 SSD for about $53 or so and making it the main drive, using the 1tb HDD as back up space. The Core i3 should be plenty for him as well, and the battery life looks quite well. The laptop, with the upgrades, brings the after tax cost to about $465. Is there anything better out there that you'd recommend? Or is this about as good as it'll get? Thanks!

Looking to get my first ever dedicated gaming laptop on a budget!

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 08:03 PM PST

Hello, I know zilch about computers and laptops so I will often use wrong terminology and will not use technical terms often. Sorry!

I'm looking to get a laptop to use for gaming, but I am on a budget and am still debating between the $400-$499 range and the $500-$600 range. If there doesn't seem to be a HUGE difference, then I may go for the lower end, but I would like to get recommendations for either range!

Although I may use it for other things such as for school and/or work, gaming is foremost in my mind so I will want a laptop that has the specs that will cover me.

The things I care most about in this order: 1. Cost. I'm on a strict budget. 2. Specs (the ability to perform well without dying/overheating and also run my games (passably) smoothly) 3. Battery life (I want at least 6 hours but the more the better) 4. Look (it can be pink with my little pony stickers all over it I don't care as long as it has badass internals and it can run games smoothly)

The most taxing game I'll probably play is modded Skyrim. I know that the vanilla game alone requires a pretty hefty computer, but with some heavy duty mods that overhaul graphics and lighting etc, the processing power necessary increases a whole lot.

Another game I may occasionally play is probably modded Minecraft. Minecraft I know takes a lot of processing power due to infinite worlds loading and mods adding assets or whatever.

Perhaps as if I get a gaming computer, I'll expand my gaming horizons a bit more, but for now, those two are probably the most computing power intense games I'll be playing.

Another thing I care about is battery life. I've seen laptops with up to 15+ hours, but honestly if it will carry me for about 5-7 hours I won't complain too much.

I know I have a lot of criteria and requirements so I'm very sorry about that.

I look forward to any and all input you all can give me!

Can Anyone Help Me Find A Laptop Like This?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 01:18 PM PST

    Hello everyone!

I was wondering if anyone could help me with finding a laptop. It'd need the following,:

    1. 17" display
    2. GTX 1060 6GB GPU
    3. 2TB HDD
    4. 128 or 256 GB SSD
    5. i7 7th or 8th generation CPU
    6. 16GB RAM (DDR4)
    7. A Fan that doesn't absolutely blow up (it can be loud, just not "the spaceship is about to blast off loud, like the overpowered Walmart laptops)
    8. USB's (3.0 and 2.0)
    9. Microphone Jack
    10. Good Battery
    11. (If Possible, something below $1300, I know these part's are expensive on retailer sites, so maybe something on eBay could be cheaper?)

If there is anything I am missing, please let me know. I have tried looking for laptops with the same specs everywhere, but for the life of me, can not find them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

P.S. Here is the helpful form thingy, pretty sure I messed it up, so excuse any screw-ups, thanks!

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    $1300, USA.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    ?

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    It can be under 10lbs.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    17"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Gaming w/ steam, epic games, etc.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Generic shooter games like COD, Warframe, Fortnite, and some misc. games. As long as it's above 60-70 FPS, It's good by me.

    * **Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Good quality for a keyboard (RGB would be nice), it does not need to be touchscreen, but it should have USB 3.0 and 2.0, HDMI, Microphone Jack, etc.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Laptop most likely stolen, need advice on a new one

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 07:13 PM PST

    Good evening good people.

Although I don't actually know, my old mid-2013 13" Macbook Air seems to have been stolen, and I can't live for too long without a laptop.

Total budget and country of purchase: CAD 1500 (~USD 1100) max, although I'd prefer to be closer to 1000, Canada.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't need it to be a 2 in 1, and I've been living with a battery that holds up for about 1.5 hours for half a year, so anything that would be an improvement on that. Anything that'll run faster than what I've had (ie pretty much anything on th market) is good enough.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not super important, although I will be carrying it literally everywhere and use it almost constantly. Could be a good workout though.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I really like MacOs but I'm not too bothered by Windows. You can always relearn.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Unless it's in a really small form factor (like a Dell XPS) I'd prefer it to be between 13" and 14".

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Maybe light photo editing and probably some Civilization/EU4/Cities Skylines kinda games. Gaming performance is not super important but it'd be nice to have. I also want it to be able to handle about 50 open chrome tabs because I'm that type of person.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good track pad and keyboard are both absolutely essential. I love the mac touch pad so anything that does a good job approximating it or being better. I'm not really one for using many peripherals so IO can be limited if it gives way for better performance. Over time, I tend to almost abuse my devices, so it'd be good if it were to withstand a drop or two.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I guess the natural sort of computer I'd be looking at is the sorta Macbook/XPS/matebook x pro/gram/surface pro/ideabook?-range, primarily for the build and feel of them. What I'm thus wondering would be which one of those best suits my needs, or if there's a fun option I haven't considered. Some garish gaming laptop, maybe? I've had a Macbook air for the past couple of years so I'm not too fussed about having additional features that I haven't already used. If I'm not used to having something, and if I can save some student loan money through not adding additional features I'm happy with that.

    Thank you!
