A laptop for school and work (soon) Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:34 PM PST Total budget and country of purchase: I'm looking for under $800 (it can go a little over). I'm in the US. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? I'd rather just have a laptop that runs the fastest, so I'd go with best specs How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd rather have a sleeker design, and not too heavy. Which OS do you require? Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? I usually lean towards 15.6" but I can go as small as 14 Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? I would just be doing basics stuff, but it does include some video editing and audio editing for a podcast If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't play games on my laptop My current laptop is terrible. I've had it for 2 years and it was originally only like $350. It's very slow and it would be great to have one that doesn't have these kind of problems. [link] [comments] |

Suggestion on a robust laptop - Macbook Pro dual-core sufficient, or some other better ultrabook? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 07:39 PM PST Hi, I am looking for a robust laptop that can last for many years, which can run the following simultaneously and smoothly: a browser with around 30 tabs one of which has youtube running, a music player playing music, matlab, maple, around 5 pdfs, some latex editor. Occasionally, i watch movies on the laptop, but at that time, in general no other program will be running, except a browser with a few wikipedia tabs. I do occasional video editing, but using only ffmpeg. I do not care about any type of touch/frills/tones etc., i just want something that works, but works without glitches/lags and lasts many years. My questions are the following:
Thanks for reading and the suggestions (i'll keep editing the post based on the questions/replies). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2019 04:22 AM PST Hi, I have did some research and I'm decide to purchase Asus Tuf FX505. However it comes with 2 spec which makes me so confuse. I normally use laptop for browsing , set up and upload Wordpress blog, and playing some game like dota2, PUBG, rainbow six. I prefer frame rate could hit more than 60. My question is, is i5-8300h is enough power for those work I mentioned above? If yes, I would just add the extra ram to save my buck. [link] [comments] |
Need a mobile Workstation (i m really behind on laptops) Posted: 01 Feb 2019 04:08 AM PST I currently use a Samsung RC730 S05 from 2011. I guess that is pretty much enough to say. I need the laptop for programming ,writing thesis papers, video and 3d modelling and rendering aswell as audio production and cutting/rendering with Premiere / After Effects. Gaming is not my primary concern but of course the above use cases will also allow for gaming. Good Battery Life would be cool. I dont need a 4K Screen because a laptop is not big enough to appreciate it i think. I have no idea whats hot nowadays. Price is not the problem although If the 2K mark could be avoided it would be good. But if its necessary and the laptop lasts me another 8 years like my current one has, duh. [link] [comments] |
Need help looking for a gaming laptop! Posted: 01 Feb 2019 03:53 AM PST Hi everyone! So, I'm currently studying programming, and for netbeans and such my old crappy laptop was barely enough, but now its crashing everytime I open Unity so I thought it may be about time, I gathered some money, got help from parents and finally on my way to find the perfect laptop for me. Have in mind it's going to be my gaming station, so I'm looking for something as high-end as possible, I wouldn't treat it as a programming laptop, more as a gaming one. Ok so, form: * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Flexible, but somewhere between 700-1k. Buying from Spain. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Dont really care about battery life, it should have some but it's just gonna work as a pc that moves from home, college, gf's home. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** As long as I can carry it in my backpack it's fine :) * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** A pretty nice plus, but not my main focus * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Already stated that, basically gaming, Im gonna be programming things with it, hopefully games in a future, but mostly is for gaming, I'm a junkie for indie games but I want it to move new games, a 1060 may be hoping too much but 1050 Ti or smth like that would be cool too. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I'm gonna be playing the batmans and Lara Crofts on it, also maybe I'll get Anthem, so yeah, if it can move those (not on Ultra ofc) I'm happy with it. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Please let it have more than 2 USB ports and HDMI, but thats a staple right? Also of course all good add-ons would be cool, but again, not the focus. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Thanks for helping! Huawei matebook X Pro. Still a good laptop in 2019? Posted: 01 Feb 2019 03:50 AM PST Hey guys. I've been offered a brand new unopened Matebook X pro i7 512gb ssd, mx150, 16gb RAM, for the price of 1350gbp. How good of a deal is this considering the laptop came out early 2018 ? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2019 03:29 AM PST -Total budget and country of purchase: $1,000 - $1,500 (CAD) -Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? I'd prefer to stay away from 2-in-1, battery doesn't matter so much, best specs for money preferably. -How important is weight and thinness to you? It's not really -Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows I suppose. Used Mac for the last 8 years but I'm starting to drift away from it. Too limiting in my experience. -Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I'd like to stick around the 15" mark. -Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'd like to make use of Lightroom, Photoshop occasionally for image editing. Gaming would be a bonus. Things like Skyrim, Fallout, etc. Nothing super intensive really. -If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Really being able to game at all would be nice. I don't need super max or crazy fps. -Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality and decent keyboard I suppose. I've grown quite accustomed to having a metal laptop so that would be nice, but not a requirement. Hoping to find one thats got a smaller SSD for the OS and a decent HDD as well. My current computer is a late 2011 MacBook Pro. Used mostly for school & editing. Last couple years its been a basic use laptop and now it's getting ready to die. Trying to get a semi-decent replacement to take with me as I go off for RCMP training. So I anticipate a lot of typing, word processing, research (general school/study stuff). After that it'll probably be a general purpose machine until I can get around to building a desktop again. Haven't shopped for a machine in several years so any input would be greatly appreciated. Was looking at the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 but not sure if there's a better option. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2019 03:19 AM PST Need a laptop with 17inch 144hz screen that will run every game comfortably for next 2-3 years with price not exceeding 2000 dollars. Country is US. Weight and thickness are not that big of an issue. Mostly gonna be using laptop for gaming. [link] [comments] |
Trying to decide between 2 laptops and need your help Posted: 31 Jan 2019 01:22 PM PST Hey guys, first post here but just a quick question. I'm currently tossing up between the Dell G3 (15 inch) and the ASUS s410UN (14 inch) Specs wise the Dell is superior, here is a quick summary of the two: Dell - i7-8750H, 16GB ram, 256ssd + 1tb hdd, 1050 ti you ASUS - i5-8250U, 8GB ram, 256ssd, MX150 I will be using it for University so probability is fairly important to me. However I'm not sure if the portability of the ASUS is worth the loss in specs. The only gaming I really do is league of legends. How does the build quality of the two compare? Would I be able to get a days worth of battery from the Dell if all I am doing is typing notes? How do the screens compare? I don't know too much other than what I've learnt on here so any insight would be much appreciated. My budget is 1600 nzd (about 1.1k US) and country of purchase is NZ Thank you very much, sorry for mobile format and if need be I'll edit with the proper form. [link] [comments] |

Laptop for Design & Business- dare I turn to Apple? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 05:26 PM PST I loved working on older MacBook Pros and Lenovo Thinkpads (never sure of the specific type). I currently have a HP I hate- bad matte resolution, plastic exterior, slow with Photoshop. Leaning the most toward MacBook Pro because I've put up with a piece of shit for so long and finally have money to treat myself, and aesthetics are important, but I've heard the newest models aren't any different than the 2015 version. Using it for working: graphic design, hobby photography (so.. a decent amount of storage) and in the future for interior design classes requiring CAD. Most important to me: speed, being able to run my applications, IPS, and something that's smaller and not going to break my back carrying it... while at the same time being sturdy enough to survive being carried. also THE LEWK- I lean toward Apple bc it's pretty and well designed but worry I'm paying too much and sacrificing quality. Not currently gaming but may buy the Sims and waste my life away lmao. Essentially: tell me what year and kind of either Mac or Nice Looking Windows Lappy will make me happy.

Need a new laptop for school with mx150 Posted: 31 Jan 2019 09:30 PM PST Hi, I need a new laptop for school that i can do a bit of casual gaming as well. I currently have a surface book 2 that i want to return as it doesn't have thunderbolt 3 meaning i cannot use a external gpu. I want a cheaper laptop but not too cheap that i can plug into a external gpu when i return home for proper gaming. Must haves: thunderbolt 3, 4k display, the better mx150, 16gb ram, i7 processor, 15 inch display, fingerprint or face unlock, touchscreen and look good I have found a hp envy x360 15t which ticks all of those boxes but wondering if there are any other options I mostly play rainbow six siege and some casual fortnite or csgo. I saw online that it should be able to run at 60fps with low settings and 1080p. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Need a new laptop for coding bootcamp Posted: 31 Jan 2019 05:36 PM PST Hey guys! I'm starting the coding bootcamp at Denver University in March and need a new laptop. The school requirements for a PC (my preference) are 8gb ram and a dual core 64 bit processor. I would like to exceed these requirements by a decent amount as I just need a new laptop anyways. I value performance far more than display and wouldn't mind dropping a grand on this. 16gb ram and I7 preferable. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Total budget and country of purchase: $1k US* Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money* **How important is weight and thinness * not important * * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.* Windows * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. maybe, but not very important. *
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? good keyboard * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This will primarily be used for a coding bootcamp. [link] [comments] |
Should I avoid U-series 8th gen i7 processors? Laptop for GIS and graphic design (USA) Posted: 31 Jan 2019 10:19 AM PST Hey everyone, First off, this sub is fantastic and incredibly helpful. I made this post yesterday asking for suggestions on a laptop that would be used primarily for GIS (specifically ArcGIS Desktop 10.6.x, mostly ArcMap but I want full ArcGIS Pro capabilities) and graphic design. ArcGIS is a very CPU-intensive application, so main concern is between the U-series of mobile chips and the H- or HQ-series. I've looked at the comparison of mobile processors on the sidebar and I've watched some videos but I still can't tell if I truly need the H-series. It seems that the real difference comes down to when the CPU is under a heavy load for a longer time. Furthermore, would a 7th gen i7 HQ be better than an 8th gen i7 U? I received some excellent responses on my post and I came very close to buying the Eluktronics Mech-15 G2R Pro last night. I slept on the decision and realized today that I definitely would prefer a lighter, more portable laptop. I do not NEED a gaming laptop but I realize the specs I want are often only available in a gaming laptop. I'm even interested in 2-in-1s! My (flexible) requirements are:
So after some research and many reddit searches I've found a few possible options that fit my needs: Razer Blade 15 w/ 60hz screen, 8th gen i7-8750H, GTX 1060, 16GB RAM, 256 SSD, 1TB HDD (~$1,600 USD)
Dell XPS 15 9750 w/ 8th gen i7-8750H, GTX 1050, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD (~$1,500 USD)
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme w/ EITHER 8th gen i5-8400H or i78750H ($150 difference), 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, GTX 1050i (~$1,700 to ~$1,900 USD)
Huawei MateBook X Pro Signature Edition w/ 8th gen i7-8550U, MX150, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD (~$1500)
I've also seen a bunch of cool looking 2-in-1s with decent specs but they nearly all have U-series processors which turns me off. What do you all think I should do? [link] [comments] |
Recommendation for university laptop? So many google results D: Posted: 31 Jan 2019 04:51 PM PST New here but read the rules and going to try my best to adhere to them. So, filling out the recommendation form, info is as follows:

Options better than this refurbished XPS 13? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 08:21 PM PST Hi guys. I'm looking for a post-college laptop that is lightweight and portable, but durable. Not using it for gaming and super high quality graphics are not needed. Really just Microsoft Office and browsing for the most part. Please let me know if you can think of other options that will accomplish what I'm looking for at a slightly lower price point. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Looking for a laptop around $450 Posted: 31 Jan 2019 08:17 PM PST Looking for a laptop for around $450 for my brother. Can be a little over, but not too much. He'll be using it for school, using Google sites and some browsing and video watching, nothing serious at all. Looking for Windows 10, and a FHD screen. Was looking at the Acer Aspire E5-576-392H, which is $350. I'd upgrade the 6gb of ram to 8gb, to get dual channel should I just buy a 4gb stick and replace the 2gb? I'd also be upgrading the storage, buying a 500gb crucial mx500 m.2 SSD for about $53 or so and making it the main drive, using the 1tb HDD as back up space. The Core i3 should be plenty for him as well, and the battery life looks quite well. The laptop, with the upgrades, brings the after tax cost to about $465. Is there anything better out there that you'd recommend? Or is this about as good as it'll get? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Looking to get my first ever dedicated gaming laptop on a budget! Posted: 31 Jan 2019 08:03 PM PST Hello, I know zilch about computers and laptops so I will often use wrong terminology and will not use technical terms often. Sorry! I'm looking to get a laptop to use for gaming, but I am on a budget and am still debating between the $400-$499 range and the $500-$600 range. If there doesn't seem to be a HUGE difference, then I may go for the lower end, but I would like to get recommendations for either range! Although I may use it for other things such as for school and/or work, gaming is foremost in my mind so I will want a laptop that has the specs that will cover me. The things I care most about in this order: 1. Cost. I'm on a strict budget. 2. Specs (the ability to perform well without dying/overheating and also run my games (passably) smoothly) 3. Battery life (I want at least 6 hours but the more the better) 4. Look (it can be pink with my little pony stickers all over it I don't care as long as it has badass internals and it can run games smoothly) The most taxing game I'll probably play is modded Skyrim. I know that the vanilla game alone requires a pretty hefty computer, but with some heavy duty mods that overhaul graphics and lighting etc, the processing power necessary increases a whole lot. Another game I may occasionally play is probably modded Minecraft. Minecraft I know takes a lot of processing power due to infinite worlds loading and mods adding assets or whatever. Perhaps as if I get a gaming computer, I'll expand my gaming horizons a bit more, but for now, those two are probably the most computing power intense games I'll be playing. Another thing I care about is battery life. I've seen laptops with up to 15+ hours, but honestly if it will carry me for about 5-7 hours I won't complain too much. I know I have a lot of criteria and requirements so I'm very sorry about that. I look forward to any and all input you all can give me! [link] [comments] |
Can Anyone Help Me Find A Laptop Like This? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 01:18 PM PST Hello everyone! I was wondering if anyone could help me with finding a laptop. It'd need the following,:
If there is anything I am missing, please let me know. I have tried looking for laptops with the same specs everywhere, but for the life of me, can not find them. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance! P.S. Here is the helpful form thingy, pretty sure I messed it up, so excuse any screw-ups, thanks! * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1300, USA. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. ? * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** It can be under 10lbs. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 17" * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Gaming w/ steam, epic games, etc. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Generic shooter games like COD, Warframe, Fortnite, and some misc. games. As long as it's above 60-70 FPS, It's good by me. * **Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Good quality for a keyboard (RGB would be nice), it does not need to be touchscreen, but it should have USB 3.0 and 2.0, HDMI, Microphone Jack, etc. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** [link] [comments] |
Laptop most likely stolen, need advice on a new one Posted: 31 Jan 2019 07:13 PM PST Good evening good people. Although I don't actually know, my old mid-2013 13" Macbook Air seems to have been stolen, and I can't live for too long without a laptop. Total budget and country of purchase: CAD 1500 (~USD 1100) max, although I'd prefer to be closer to 1000, Canada. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't need it to be a 2 in 1, and I've been living with a battery that holds up for about 1.5 hours for half a year, so anything that would be an improvement on that. Anything that'll run faster than what I've had (ie pretty much anything on th market) is good enough. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not super important, although I will be carrying it literally everywhere and use it almost constantly. Could be a good workout though. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I really like MacOs but I'm not too bothered by Windows. You can always relearn. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Unless it's in a really small form factor (like a Dell XPS) I'd prefer it to be between 13" and 14". Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Maybe light photo editing and probably some Civilization/EU4/Cities Skylines kinda games. Gaming performance is not super important but it'd be nice to have. I also want it to be able to handle about 50 open chrome tabs because I'm that type of person. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? See above Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good track pad and keyboard are both absolutely essential. I love the mac touch pad so anything that does a good job approximating it or being better. I'm not really one for using many peripherals so IO can be limited if it gives way for better performance. Over time, I tend to almost abuse my devices, so it'd be good if it were to withstand a drop or two. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I guess the natural sort of computer I'd be looking at is the sorta Macbook/XPS/matebook x pro/gram/surface pro/ideabook?-range, primarily for the build and feel of them. What I'm thus wondering would be which one of those best suits my needs, or if there's a fun option I haven't considered. Some garish gaming laptop, maybe? I've had a Macbook air for the past couple of years so I'm not too fussed about having additional features that I haven't already used. If I'm not used to having something, and if I can save some student loan money through not adding additional features I'm happy with that. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
