    TL;DR - LOG AFTER RUNNING SFC /SCANNOW ON A FRESH INSTALL: https://drive.google.com/open?id=15LJbJlTs1DLEpJR9q2JqFgTPqGFrzT8I

    ---------------------------------

    System info:

    • Mobo: Asus X99-A
    • CPU: Intel i7 5820k
    • RAM: 4x8GB G.Skill Ripjaws V Series (2400 MHz DDR4)
    • GPU: GTX 980 (Gigabyte Windforce)
    • PSU: EVGA Supernova NEX750G

I have a massive problem on my hands and I've been trying to fix it for the last four days - so I've decided to ask here for help

My problems all started when I tried updating my Nvidia graphics card drivers a few days ago. I kept getting an "Nvidia Installer Failed" message, and I tried many potential solutions. Nothing worked, so I decided to completely wipe my drive and re-install Windows. However, the process of reinstalling Windows has been SUCH a pain in the ass.

Over the last 4 days, I tried countless amount of ISOs, flash drives, hardware changes, and BIOS settings, and I just could NOT get Windows to install for some reason. Finally today, I got Windows 10 64 bit (ver 1809) installed, but only because I made a few registry changes during the installation process, which definitely shouldn't be the case.

I had my friend bring his desktop over and swapped nearly all of my components into his computer to verify that they're working correctly (graphics card works correctly, RAM works, all of my drives are healthy, PSU is fine) - the only two I didn't switch were my CPU and motherboard (both of which I'm fairly certain don't have any issues since everything worked totally fine before I reinstalled Windows). BIOS is on most recent version, and I cleared my CMOS too.

Now that I finally have Windows 10 "working" on my system again, despite being a completely fresh install, I have problems. For example, I can't open Device Manager without a "This app has been blocked for your protection. An administrator has blocked you from running this app. For more informaiton, contact the administrator." message (even after disabling SmartScreen/UAC). I can access it if I turn on the Administrator account, but I shouldn't need to do that. Furthermore, I still can't install my graphics card drivers. I tried two other version of Windows (1607 and 1709), and had the same issues with both. I even tried setting my SATA type to IDE and installing as Legacy, but nothing is working. So at the moment, I have Windows 10 installed with my SATA drives set to AHCI and installed as UEFI.

I ran sfc /scannow and got a "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" message. Using DISM didn't fix the issue. I am getting so incredibly frustrated just trying to get my PC up and running again since I need it for work, maybe someone who knows more than I do can help me out?

Here is the log from the scan: https://drive.google.com/open?id=15LJbJlTs1DLEpJR9q2JqFgTPqGFrzT8I

    Thank you!

Facebook is giving me popup ads on my phone when I don't have facebook.

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 01:10 AM PST

For the past 1-3 days I have been getting ads on my phone non-stop where ever I go. I haven't downloaded anything besides Samsung Themes so I could change my wallpaper. I clicked on some option when one popped up and clicked something about not wanting to see this ad, and a message about this being a Facebook ad recommendation popped up. I don't have Facebook on my phone or anything owned by Facebook, what's happening?

    Headphones not working on computer

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 12:47 AM PST

    Hello,

I have tried everything I can think of for this issue. I have an ASUS ROG Strix GL703 laptop that I use that was working great until this morning, when I started to not get any sound from my headphones. It was working just fine last night before I went to bed, but now it is not.

I have tried multiple sets of headphones, but none work, except for a pair of bluetooth headphones. I have updated my drivers, tried to changes the settings around, and nothing seems to work. I can see the headphones in my settings, and it shows that I should be hearing sound, but I do not. Any suggestions?

Help with monitor booting with warm color

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:36 AM PST

Whenever I boot my PC my computer boots with a warm color profile (ie. like Windows night light) and the only way I can get it to default back to its usual appearance is by going to reddit.com. For some reason going to this website changing the color temp on the monitor back to normal.

I've tried resetting my AMD color profiles and my Windows monitor profiles back to default but my PC still boots with this warm color. It's not caused by my monitor OSD settings either.

    Any ideas?

    VM box Lab, DHCP Issues

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 01:15 AM PST

So i have made a small lab on VM box to exercise Win server active directory, group policy and such. I have 1 DC and 2 WS, I made a configuration for the DHCP so that the WS will join automatically, the thing is if I assign IP address to them manually they will be connected to the internet but if they obtain the IP automatically they are not connected, even though my DC has net, so I was wondering do you chaps have any clue what could it be.

Once again if I manually assign the IP they would work just fine and when I have 2 WS it is no biggie but for scale reasons the obtaining DHCP is a must, so if you can give any suggestions, pointers, tips I would be more than grateful.

    Cheers

WiFi randomly works on 5.0 but not on 2.4. What's wrong?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 12:38 AM PST

Sorry for any misused term or confusing explanation. I don't have much knowledge on technical related stuff. I will try to explain my issue as best as I can. Background story:

I changed to a better ISP 4 months ago, with optic fiber internet of 200MB. It worked perfectly fine until last week when it suddenly stopped working without apparent issue.

I called the customer service and they sent a tech to replace the modem. It did fix it for a few hours but then it stopped working again. Once I called again and a different tech came, he gave a deep look into it. So basically their modems have two types of signal on two diff frequencies, 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz. Idk how common that is, but until I changed ISP's this was unheard for me.

So the internet works fine on cable, fine with the 5.0 Signal, but does not connect at all on the 2.4Ghz. Some older devices don't acknowledge the 5.0Ghz so they just don't connect at all.

If you leave the WiFi turned on, it tries to connect over and over and just gives the Authentication error msg as if the password was wrong, even tho I am sure it's the right one. If it tries to connect and fails multiple times, a second "ghost" network will appear among the options to connect, with the same name of the network and without password. But it immediately disconnects if I try to connect.

Has this ever happened to anyone? Techs here have no idea what is happening and why. I suspect some interference on channels but I can not understand why only now after 4 months working fine.

Any suggestion is appreciated, thanks in advance.

    PC stuck in boot loop.

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 03:48 AM PST

I have a dell xps 15 and I recently reset it. And it is stuck in a boot loop. It asks me where I live and what my preferred keyboard layout is and then asks me for to sign into a wifi network which I skip because I don't have one to connect to at the moment. Then the Just a moment screen pops up and stays there for about 10 minutes then the PC restarts. I see the dell logo on boot up. Then the same screen where it asks where i live and preferred keyboard layout pops up. I have no idea what to do, would appreciate some help.

    Thanks

Laptop cannot get out of standby, unresponsive, fix without restarting computer?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 12:01 AM PST

So my laptop powers down the screen after some time. Usually it's fine. But every now and then, it goes standby and it doesn't power up when I press the keyboard.

The only thing that works is holding down the power button and starting it again. I wonder if there is an alternative way because I don't want to lose my current session.

    Thanks for reading.

EDIT: it is an ASUS zenbook with 16GB ram and intel i7 7700. Running Windows 10 Home

EDIT 2: Insight for what causes this problem would be interesting if anyone else experienced the same thing before.

AMD R9 380X crashing on all drivers but only in Windows 7

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 03:19 AM PST

So I have a 3 year old Sapphire Nitro 380X that has been working flawlessly up until yesterday. I updated the drivers from 18.5.2 to 19.1.1 two or three days ago and noticed a bunch of "Radeon wattman has restarted due to an unexpected failure" (or something along those lines) warnings, but the card still worked fine so I ignored them.

Yesterday I was playing Ace Combat 7 when I alt tabbed out of the game to run MSI Afterburner, and as soon as the program showed up on screen everything went green and I had to force restart the PC. I used Display Driver Uninstaller to remove the drivers and roll back to 18.5.2, and I still got screen artifacts and green screen whenever I did anything; artifacts appeared even when just moving the mouse. Open any program? Crash. Open Radeon Settings? Crash. Open any folder? Crash. It even crashed when changing the clock time.

Used DDU again and this time I installed the 18.12.2 drivers, no dice. Tried other methods of uninstalling the card, like AMD's own driver cleanup utility and uninstalling the drivers via device manager. Nothing works, anything I do causes a green screen. I haven't tried other driver versions because at this point I'm fairly sure it's going to crash no matter what.

The weird part? This ONLY happens in Windows 7. I'm using Windows 10 right now (dual boot), where the card driver is 18.9.3, and everything is stable. I can even run games and everything works. The other weird part is that the card or the drivers started acting up the instant I ran MSI Afterburner, but I don't know if that's the cause or just a coincidence. I'm also sure it's not an issue with overheating.

Does this rule out the possibility that the card is dying? I don't know what to do at this point, and I'd rather not have to reinstall Windows 7 to see if that fixes anything.

Here are my specs, if it helps

    • MSI H81-P33

    • i5 4460

    • Sapphire Nitro R9 380X

    • G.skill Aegis 2x8GB DDR3-1600 ram

    • Windows 7 installed on a Samsung 850 EVO ssd

    starts to boot then dies

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 03:01 AM PST

this is a macbook air a1466

so the problem started out as sometimes just not turning back on. it got a bit worse, so 2 days ago i formatted and updated the software and now when i turn it on it makes the sound show the icon and bar then dies. after that it wont turn back on for a while. give it about half an hour and you can turn it on and it will do the same thing, turn on apple logo and sound then die and wont turn back on. before it got this bad i looked at the battery settings too it said about 316 cycles, i don't recall anything that seemed odd.

I have tried;FormattingSMC rest: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295NVRAM rest: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063I tried to boot it in safe mode but it cuts out as normal.

i don't think it's just the screen as the keyboard even stops glowing the moment the screen cuts out. im unsure if battery issue or other hardware issue but need to know for sure before committing to buying a replacement part.

Weird noise problem with my CPU fan.

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 03:00 AM PST

My CPU fan makes this annoying high pitch whirring sound even at low RPM values. When i forcibly stop the fan it stops but only after it's been still for a second or two. The weird thing is after i plug the fan from the cpu_fan connector to my sys_fan connector the noise stops. The sound doesn't even seem mechanical so what the hell. I do know what busted bearings sound like.

    Is my PSU dying?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:52 AM PST

So a few days ago I've noticed that my PC tends to go into sleep mode while I am playing something on it.

Since this seemed like a classic overheating problem, I've checked my temps with HWmonitor/MSI afterburner and learned that my CPU temperature reaches ~65C on older games (metro 2033 redux) and ~75C on new ones (like Monster Hunter World). When on idle CPU temp is around 38-42C.

These temperatures seem to be tolerable for this particular processor(according to the manufacturer), therefore I assumed there's no problem with the thermal paste. Nevertheless, just to be on the safe side, I cleaned the old one off and replaced it with a new one(Arctic MX-2).

But once I booted up the pc and gave it a trial run the problem persisted. What could I do to fix this?

    My specs:

    i5-4670k @ 3.4Ghz

    RTX 2060

    PSU Seasonic S12II-620 620W 80 Plus Bronze

    H87M-E33

    8GB DDR3 RAM

Before all of this, I have not used this computer for gaming for quite a while, and after coming back to it (beginning of January) I encountered a similar problem, but only in Monster Hunter World. To combat this I've replaced the thermal paste (that was the first time, now was the second) and everything was okay until I purchased rtx 2060. Then, after a couple days of light gaming, all of this "pleasantness" started. I do hope that I will not need to replace my PSU, seeing how I already have to replace my motherboard, CPU, and RAM in order to combat this dreaded CPU bottleneck.

All four CPU cooler legs are held in place with these "tweezer-like" mechanisms that go through the holes in the mobo. Back in the day one of these tweezer legs broke (and I was left with 7 of them instead of 8 since each pin has 2 of them). And unfortunately, during the latest cooler installation, I've lost another "tweezer-leg", so now two out of 4 pins only have 1 "tweezer-leg", which means the cooler is a little loose. To combat this I've set the case on its side, to let the gravity work in my favor, but something tells me it's just not enough.

P.S. On my latest attempt to solve this I've changed the minimum processor state (located in "advanced power settings" section) from 100% to 60%. While it did not solve the problem I was rendered "mouseless" after pc woke up (i.e. neither my cable nor my wireless mouse responded to my commands). This might be unrelated but I thought it was worth mentioning.

    No Sound in Windows 7

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:50 AM PST

Approximately 5-10% of the times that i start my computer, windows 7 doesn´t recognize my Sound Blaster Recon 3Di Audio controller. Reinstalling the driver doesn´t fix the issue, the only thing that has worked so far is restarting.

It´s not a huge issue but still annoying.

    Win 10 is being dumb

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:46 AM PST

I'm having an issue with windows 10, if I try to open 2 different excel files, it just swaps between them on the same instance of excel instead of opening a new window, which means I can't look at them side-by-side. I can open a new instance of excel and open the file from within there but I'd like to be able to open a separate instance from my file manager. I thought maybe it was all programs so I tried opening a second file manager but that gave me a second window. Am I missing something? Is there some way to fix this? It's super annoying, I'm hoping someone has a solution. Thank you in advance.

    Minimising Interference

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:34 AM PST

    hi all,

Lately I have been noticing that my wireless mouse operation is not smooth and quite jittery. I am guessing this is caused by its proximity to my wireless router.

What can I do to minimize this interference so that its operation is normal again?

My mouse is quite old (Logitech MX Laser), but not sure if buying a new / better model wireless mouse will resolve the issue (?)

    TIA

    Blu ray drive

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 01:31 PM PST

I am looking to purchase a drive for my computer so i can rip music from cd's and in the future would like to find a program that would allow me to rip my movies from disc (blu ray and dvd) to store on a external hard drive or maybe even a cloud?

I'm not super tech savy but not completely illiterate either so i would like to know if I'm going in the right defection.

The drive I'm considering is the Pioneer BD/DVD/CD 6X USB 3.0

My computer is ASUS Republic of Gamers Strix GL12 8GB Memory GeForce GTX 1050 2GB Graphics Card 1TB Hard Drive Windows 10 Gaming Desktop Computer

Is there a better drive ? Am i going in the correct direction?

Thank you for your time! I hope i explained my questions appropriately!

SSD as cache for RAID 0 array?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:28 AM PST

    Hi all,

My question is simple: How do I set up my spare 120GB SSD as a cache specifically for a 4-Disk RAID 0 array I've set up?

I've already got an M.2 drive for system & pagefile, but 4TB with an SSD cache would make for a fantastic place to hold a huge steam game library. Intel RST doesn't seem to want to show any options related to this functionality unless I have Optane memory, so unless there's some workaround some other software recommendations would be nice.
