Cheap used ultraportable linux machine Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:51 AM PST Budget: 100$ - 120$ Must haves: + linux compatibility + small as possible (<= 11.6") + long battery + screen decent for working outdoor What I will use it for: + minimal linux distro + terminal applications (90% vim) + browsing + I could use it with ssh + vnc What I have found that kinda suits my needs: CHROMEBOOK YOGA 11E, Intel Celeron N3160, 4gb ram, IPS 11.6" I can linux on it, with a little bit of hassle. This seems like a decent compromise, but I'm not sure of this purchase because:
Other things I consider: + 2 in 1s. They tick most boxes, except linux compatibility. I did not find one, that could be considered compatible. + old atom netbooks. They tick most boxes, except battery life. But really, should I buy one in 2019? What do you folks think? [link] [comments] |

Powerful multimedia laptop for hobby editing of video/photo Posted: 06 Feb 2019 01:58 AM PST * **Total budget and country of purchase:** 1200£ UK * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best Specifications with good battery life * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not important * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** <16" * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Video/photo a tiny bit gaming * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Indy ant oldish fps games * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Good screen (hopefully 100% sRGB), upgradability of hdd and ram. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Aiming for a i7-8750h but will settle for a i5-8300h if it has good battery. So far what fits the bill are XPS 15 laptops but those have quality issues and not great thermals. Razer Blade 15 is a bit out of the budget. Don't mind the laptop being refurbished. I'm not in a rush so if you think there will be good gear coming out soonish leave a comment. Cheers! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:42 PM PST hello everyone I am using a MacBook air mid 2013 (battery draining fast) and i think it is ok to change it now after 6 years i was intend to buy xps 9370 or 9570 is there any specification to no get thermal issues (will not make any repaste) and i want to know if they have a good keyboard ,if not is MateBook x pro have thermal issue and if these choices not good i need some suggestions , already i buy x360 spectre 13 FHD it was good but keyboard backlit not working and i did not like the keyboard ,sometime the keys became hard and not clicky also i did not like the screen i can see the light room on it so i return it back . i will use the laptop just at home so it is ok with 15 inch even if it is heavy for youtube, Netflix, surfing and small business like office and accounting program no need for big games but i hope with a nice screen i know there is so many topics here about laptops and already i read a lot of them but still i have big confuse i do not know why there is all this issues in new laptops . Suggestions for a daily driver/school computer needed Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:34 PM PST * **Total budget and country of purchase:*\* United States and around $1,200 USD (Bonus points if there is one below budget) * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\* I am not looking for a two in one, long battery life is preferred due to me not liking to have to carry a cord around. Ideally I want the best for my money. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\* My current PC laptop is close to seven years old and is a brick, I am looking for something much thinner. It does not have to be a piece of paper but I also do not want to lug something around the times I do have to carry it. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\* Windows or Mac (though Apple usually is hella expensive). I have used Chrome OS before but need to be able to run software that is not always dependent on the internet. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\* 15 inch is preferred, anything smaller is hard to see on, and anything larger is usually difficult to carry around. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\* While I enjoy my video games I am not much of a PC Gamer. I would like to be able to run things like Teamspeak/discord all while having MS word and other random programs going. Nothing super fancy like Photoshop or the likes. I plan on using this for school and personal use (writing, youtube/netflix and practicing coding). * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\* Again, not really a gamer so I do not need something that lets you see the individual hairs on a horse in Skyrim. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touch pad)?*\* I would like a backlit keyboard, no touch screen, a webcam is not needed but since it seems to be standard these days I will be fine with one. I want USB ports, a microphone jack for sure, anything else will be a bonus. I have seen some models with a finger print reader and the paranoid side of me loves the idea, but if there is not a computer within budget I will be fine. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\* I have experience with Mac, Windows and Chrome OS, so moving to another system will not be a problem for me. I am looking for a laptop I can keep for many years and upgrade myself if needed, while I say I like Apple products, I am not a fan of how you cannot customize things for your personal use. I have looked at thinkpads before and have an interest in them not only because I like the brand but I like how long lasting and durable they are, my only thing is finding the right model for me. So I appreciate any and all input, because while I am not looking for something to run a space ship, I do want something that is better than the slow brick I have now. [link] [comments] |

Do I pay $475 to repair Macbook, or cough up an extra few hundred dollars for something new? Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:15 PM PST Currently, I have a MacBook "Core M" 1.1 12" (Early 2015). Yesterday, I dropped my phone on it and the entire display just broke. Went to Apple; they quoted me $475 to fix. I'm a senior in college and will be in grad school next year. All I really do on my laptop now is: - type papers - watch YouTube - surf the Internet - watch movies I realize I don't need a powerhouse laptop since I really don't use it for much (The MacBook was a high school graduation gift). What would you guys suggest? Just fix my laptop or get a more practical option? [link] [comments] |

I've had people recommend buying a desktop in addition to a 2 in 1 to run games better for the same price (would need monitor and keyboard). Maybe thoughts on this instead of shelling out for one dedicated system for everything. I'll link the systems I've been looking at. Open to other options of course. Thoughts on these systems, how they are with cooling, and their flaws would be nice. HP Spectre x360, Canadian site seemed to have very limited customization options so I linked the US site XPS 15 9575 Lenova Yoga 720 https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/laptops/yoga/700-series/Yoga-720-15/p/88YG7000828 Lenova Yoga 730 (also what is the difference between 720 and 730, couldn't see any when briefly looking and this was more expensive) https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/laptops/yoga/700-series/Yoga-730-15/p/88YG7000965 Was also looking at the Surface Book 2 but it's very expensive [link] [comments] |

Upgrade-able i7/Ryzen 7/i5 G under $1000? Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:17 PM PST Are there any 13" to 16" Windows laptops with an 8th Gen i7 U/i5 G or 2nd Gen Ryzen 7 with minimum of 8 GBs of RAM, 256 SSD and 1080 IPS screen. Good battery life (8+ hrs), nice keyboard, reliable build quality and under 5 lbs. For the Intel chips, MX150 or higher and for AMD, obviously the Vega 10 that is already there. Just asking for now. Will probably buy during back to school season (apparently best deals are during that time). [link] [comments] |

HELP ME DECIDE ROG STRIX SCAR II or ROG Zephyrus S Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:07 PM PST Hi guys , I hope that someone can help me out. I am confused between the two options On paper they have the same specs. I went online to figure out some the differences between them, most of which consisted of thermal issues and screen bleed. If anyone has experience with any of these system can I get an advice for which one to get? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
