    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I heard lenovo yoga has screen and build quality issues. I am unsure if it's true but i don't know much of asus.

Looking for a laptop to travel abroad with, light and powerful

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 03:46 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'm in the UK. My budget is around £1000, but preferably lower. Could go higher if really necessary. Considering buying second hand or refurbished too, if that helps!

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I think I'd like it to be touchscreen with a detachable screen, but good battery and specs are also ideal too.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Yes, I'm travelling to Thailand with one bag, so it'd be nice if it could be quite light to fit in my backpack. Not hugely essential but preferable.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Bigger the better, so 17" would be great, but 15" is good if it means extra features and better overall experience.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mild photo editing with Photoshop and Lightroom, mostly writing so would want Chrome to handle many tabs at once. Some gaming would be good, but not essential, I can always replay older games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No major deal, it'd be nice to play newer games but I can live without it.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? This is unlikely but a keypad on the right (with numpad, numbers, +, _ etc) would be useful but I can always buy that separately and plug it in via USB (or bluetooth maybe). A touchscreen would be good but can live without it if necessary. I'd like the ability to connect my Galaxy Tab A tablet somehow too.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've asked around and people have recommended the Lenovo X1. I read up on it and it sounds great, apart from it seems the screen is small, like 11"? But it also has some projector option which sounds great, but is it actually any good? I'm also leaning toward one of the Surface Pros but are they overpriced for what they offer? And are they out of my budget really? I'd just like something light and powerful really. The Lenovos seem to have an option where the battery charges to 80% in an hour, which sounds nice. Is it safe to buy one of these refurbished or second hand or should I always buy new?

    Laptop for schoolwork/CAD, $600-800

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:10 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
$600-$800, willing to stretch to $1000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
Definitely having the best specs is the most important; good battery life is a close second.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Will be taking laptop to school regularly so important, but I can sacrifice this for specs/battery!

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Any screen size 14" and up is fine

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. This is mainly going to be for engineering based schoolwork, so lots of CAD. Programs include SolidWorks, MathLAB, MathCAD, Femap

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Not planning to game on this device.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? |
Not anything specific, good build quality and good peripheral support would be nice

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I've been doing some research and some ThinkPads seem fairly nice and might fit my use case. The ThinkPad T480 is on sale right now and I've been considering it, I'm just not sure if it'll run the programs I need/if there's a better laptop in my budget. Not sure if this changes anything, but I'm looking to buy soon, within the next week or so. I really appreciate your help with this!

Work Laptop (Machine Learning Software Development) - 14"/15.6", Portugal, 600€

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 03:07 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 600€, Portugal

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Between "not important", "somewhat important", "important" and "really important", I would say important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Will install Linux and Windows on it (already have the OS)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" or 15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Able to smoothly run hard drive and RAM intensive IDE's like IntelliJ Idea and Visual Studio (run and debug simple code, long and heavy computations I can do by deploying code to a server)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Since I already own a desktop for gaming, I don't make this a necessity.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? N/A

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Looking for a laptop for coding. All heavy computations (GPU/Multi-threading CPU) can be done by remotelly connecting via SSH to more powerfull computers, however the capability of being able to run and debug code on IDE's such as IntelliJ idea / Pycharm / Visual Studio is crucial for me.

    Cheap used ultraportable linux machine

    Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:51 AM PST

    Budget: 100$ - 120$

    Must haves:

    + linux compatibility

    + small as possible (<= 11.6")

    + long battery

+ screen decent for working outdoor

What I will use it for:

    + minimal linux distro

    + terminal applications (90% vim)

    + browsing

+ I could use it with ssh + vnc

What I have found that kinda suits my needs:

CHROMEBOOK YOGA 11E, Intel Celeron N3160, 4gb ram, IPS 11.6"

I can linux on it, with a little bit of hassle. This seems like a decent compromise, but I'm not sure of this purchase because:

    1. I have read that it's not a small laptop, because of the bezels
    2. I'm not sure about the price, 120$, should be less no? Although prices are not really fair where I am from.

    Other things I consider:

+ 2 in 1s. They tick most boxes, except linux compatibility. I did not find one, that could be considered compatible.

+ old atom netbooks. They tick most boxes, except battery life. But really, should I buy one in 2019?

    What do you folks think?

Aiming for a i7-8750h but will settle for a i5-8300h if it has good battery. So far what fits the bill are XPS 15 laptops but those have quality issues and not great thermals. Razer Blade 15 is a bit out of the budget. Don't mind the laptop being refurbished. I'm not in a rush so if you think there will be good gear coming out soonish leave a comment. Cheers!

Looking for low budget laptop for light browsing/gaming

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:55 PM PST

My old Acer aspire 5740g gave out on me last week. Looking for something decent to replace with it.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $300 or below (Possibly $350 if specs are worth the upgrade)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Prefer best specifications for the money. Decent battery would be a bonus, but not necessary.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Preferably light and somewhat thin. My old acer aspire 5740g was about 6 pounds.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferably around 13-14 inches. 15 inch screen might be a little too big/heavy.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not much Cad/video editing. I would like to run league of legends as I play that from time to time. Would be a great bonus being to play it on a laptop.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League of legends (60fps?) on mid settings

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable built quality

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I don't use my laptop much ever since I bought my desktop 1.5 years ago. I do however, use it on and off. Would prefer to have a laptop in hand in case I need to travel or use it for work. My budget is about $300. Used/Refurbished/New does not matter to me as much as long as the quality is good.

As of right now, I am looking into this laptop. I can pick up for 20% off from google express I believe. Total would come out to be about $320+tax. Would love some suggestions as I do not have knowledge of all the newest tech.

    HP 14-df0020nr 14″ Notebook - Core i3 8130U 2.2 GHz - 4 GB RAM - 128 GB SSD - Natural Silver/Ash Silver Keyboard Frame/Vertical Brushed Pattern

Daily Office Work under 500 Euro (~$570) (Germany)

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:36 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
Budget is about 500 euros, but willing to go a little up if it's worth it. Country of purchase would be Germany.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
I would say price value is most important closely followed by battery and far of the 2 in 1 factor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not important, but as always nice to have.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Limited photo editing, nothing too advanced.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      No gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard would be nice as it will be mainly used for writing. Optical-drive is highly desired, but I think it could work out to use an external drive if that makes the whole laptop much better. Finger-print reader and touchscreen are not important at all.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

      • This laptop is for my mom who is a journalist and uses her laptop daily. She is used to have a lot of browser tabs open and several word documents. She does occasional photo editing, but nothing advanced. Sometimes she takes the laptop to meetings so a good battery and build quality would be important.
      • As I mentioned, she would like an optical drive, but she uses that just a couple times a month so I think she could just use an external drive, if that makes the whole build better.
      • I am comfortable exchanging parts of a laptop, so it would be okay to have an HDD to start out and I can switch it to an SSD. Same with RAM, it could start lower and I install more on it later. Those upgrades are not within the budget as they could happen in the future.

Suggestions for a daily driver/school computer needed

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 09:34 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:*\* United States and around $1,200 USD (Bonus points if there is one below budget) *

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\* I am not looking for a two in one, long battery life is preferred due to me not liking to have to carry a cord around. Ideally I want the best for my money. *

**How important is weight and thinness to you?*\* My current PC laptop is close to seven years old and is a brick, I am looking for something much thinner. It does not have to be a piece of paper but I also do not want to lug something around the times I do have to carry it. *

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\* Windows or Mac (though Apple usually is hella expensive). I have used Chrome OS before but need to be able to run software that is not always dependent on the internet. *

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\* 15 inch is preferred, anything smaller is hard to see on, and anything larger is usually difficult to carry around. *

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\* While I enjoy my video games I am not much of a PC Gamer. I would like to be able to run things like Teamspeak/discord all while having MS word and other random programs going. Nothing super fancy like Photoshop or the likes. I plan on using this for school and personal use (writing, youtube/netflix and practicing coding). *

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\* Again, not really a gamer so I do not need something that lets you see the individual hairs on a horse in Skyrim. *

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touch pad)?*\* I would like a backlit keyboard, no touch screen, a webcam is not needed but since it seems to be standard these days I will be fine with one. I want USB ports, a microphone jack for sure, anything else will be a bonus. I have seen some models with a finger print reader and the paranoid side of me loves the idea, but if there is not a computer within budget I will be fine. *

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\*

I have experience with Mac, Windows and Chrome OS, so moving to another system will not be a problem for me. I am looking for a laptop I can keep for many years and upgrade myself if needed, while I say I like Apple products, I am not a fan of how you cannot customize things for your personal use.

I have looked at thinkpads before and have an interest in them not only because I like the brand but I like how long lasting and durable they are, my only thing is finding the right model for me.

So I appreciate any and all input, because while I am not looking for something to run a space ship, I do want something that is better than the slow brick I have now.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'd go with better specs, but I'm open to every suggestion
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not really important
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15,6" or something close to it
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'd like to play a few games, besides studying
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League of Legends at high settings with 60FPS
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A matte display
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thank you for your time!

Do I pay $475 to repair Macbook, or cough up an extra few hundred dollars for something new?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:15 PM PST

    Currently, I have a MacBook "Core M" 1.1 12" (Early 2015).

Yesterday, I dropped my phone on it and the entire display just broke. Went to Apple; they quoted me $475 to fix.

I'm a senior in college and will be in grad school next year. All I really do on my laptop now is: - type papers - watch YouTube - surf the Internet - watch movies

I realize I don't need a powerhouse laptop since I really don't use it for much (The MacBook was a high school graduation gift).

What would you guys suggest? Just fix my laptop or get a more practical option?

    2 in 1 Laptop for note-taking, gaming, drawing/animating, photoshop/premiere, CAD, under $2000 CAD ($1500 USD)

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:15 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: would like one under $2000 Canadian (~$1500 usd), could push up to $2500 if I think it's worth it
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'd like a 2 in 1 (taking notes at uni), a battery that will last throughout the day (8-4 is my longest day), and would like it to last for a few years
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inch, FHD is fine
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD, adobe premier/photoshop, drawing/animating software, gaming
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? BO4 and other FPS/TPS, thinking of getting Anthem, would like to run at medium-high and 45fps min, 60fps would be preferable though
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? solid build quality, ssd of at least 500GB could install myself if cheaper, would be nice if it came with an active pen but could buy one separately
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've had people recommend buying a desktop in addition to a 2 in 1 to run games better for the same price (would need monitor and keyboard). Maybe thoughts on this instead of shelling out for one dedicated system for everything.

I'll link the systems I've been looking at. Open to other options of course. Thoughts on these systems, how they are with cooling, and their flaws would be nice.

HP Spectre x360, Canadian site seemed to have very limited customization options so I linked the US site

Lenova Yoga 730 (also what is the difference between 720 and 730, couldn't see any when briefly looking and this was more expensive)

Was also looking at the Surface Book 2 but it's very expensive

    Upgrade-able i7/Ryzen 7/i5 G under $1000?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:17 PM PST

Are there any 13" to 16" Windows laptops with an 8th Gen i7 U/i5 G or 2nd Gen Ryzen 7 with minimum of 8 GBs of RAM, 256 SSD and 1080 IPS screen. Good battery life (8+ hrs), nice keyboard, reliable build quality and under 5 lbs. For the Intel chips, MX150 or higher and for AMD, obviously the Vega 10 that is already there.

Just asking for now. Will probably buy during back to school season (apparently best deals are during that time).

Also might do some light video editing. Was considering a Microsoft Surface Go because it of its size and versatility.

HELP ME DECIDE ROG STRIX SCAR II or ROG Zephyrus S

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:07 PM PST

Hi guys , I hope that someone can help me out. I am confused between the two options

    1. ROG STRIX SCAR II
    2. ROG ZEPHYRUS S SLIM

On paper they have the same specs. I went online to figure out some the differences between them, most of which consisted of thermal issues and screen bleed. If anyone has experience with any of these system can I get an advice for which one to get?

    Thanks in advance.
