Will you buy flagships in the days to come?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 03:28 PM PST

As you know, phone prices are getting really high every year (especially flagships). Right now there are a lot of really cheap phones with good specs, for instance the new Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, Nokia (Stock Android), Honor etc.

What keeps you buying flagships and will you buy another one if the current is broken? I myself have the S8 which is great, I have no issues with it (besides minor things) but I think that if I were to upgrade, those sub 300 € phones seem really appealing.

I guess that the reason why most people by flagships is the camera. To be frank, I don't really take pictures that often besides taking notes in class or some silly moments. What's more, most of us upload things to social medias, where they are quite compressed. And nowadays Gcam is heavily ported to these phones which significantly entrances the quality for no cost.

I mean budget phones offer like 70 - 80 % of my S8 (for example): Adequate screen Great performance - IF you don't play high end games Most modern features - USB C, BT 5.0 Usually good build - see Nokia phones, even the cheapest of the line is durable

So is there any other valid reasons to buy flagships despite the rising prices? To me it is wireless charging and IP rating.

Whitestone dome warranty is a SCAM- don't fall for it.

    posting because of Galaxy Announcement

    Testimonies on previous post

For those wanting to pick up a "premium screen protector with lifetime warranty" for their shiny new S10

The warranty replacement process on the website is completely broken and will not allow you to process a replacement yourself.

I have been sending multiple emails to feedback at whitestone ( per their website). they keep telling me to re-register the product and try again. I have re-registered FOUR times and each time is the same as the last. You go through the process and the screen where you paid for shipping just say "sorry , this product cannot be purchased"

One of the claims even said " shipped - track here" and the link just brings me to the USPS homepage. I have only got emails from a Johanna which very well may be their only CSR. So a FAKE shipping notification.

All i can say is I feel lied to and scammed and fully believe that there were many fake positive reviews about their product.

The screen itself is great , flawless install. but the premium is for the lifetime warranty which is apparently bunk.

Where else can i post this to get more visibility?

My review of the Samsung SM-W2019: King of the Flip

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 02:34 AM PST

DISCLAIMER: I have no official relation to Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd or Samsung China. I purchased the phone with my own money and all opinion are my own. Images are courtesy of Google because I'm not a product photographer.

I am reviewing the final retail version, Premium Edition Unit #12356 (platinum color with 256GB of storage).

This is not a mass market consumer product, the current street price is about $2700 USD.

It is intended for rich people in Mainland China. The phone is only sold in Mainland China, not even Taiwan/Hong Kong or Macau.

This review will mainly compare the phone with the previous model, the SM-W2018, which I used for the past year as my daily driver.

BACKGROUND: Every year, for the past 11 years, Samsung has released a high-end luxury android flip phone exclusive to the Chinese market through their charity xinxitianxia (heart of the world) in partnership with China Telecom. These phones are known as the W series, with this model being the W2019. Each model year follows the same common theme: two sAMOLED screens, two SIM cards in a traditional clamshell design with T9 keyboard and flagship specs.

The SM-W2019 features the exact same specs as the S9+/Note 9, stuffed into a flip phone chassis.

That means you get the same SD845, 6GB of RAM, and 256GB of ROM, with the same dual camera system and 8mp front facing shooter.

    DESIGN/HARDWARE:

The W2019 has a more angular design than the previous generation. The curved glass is removed and instead replaced by flat glass panels on both the front and back, along with a more angular metal casing. They obviously want to maximize the volume of the phone for the increased battery size. The T9 keyboard has been made smaller and moved higher on the phone to make it easier to use with one hand. The fingerprint sensor has been moved from the back to the side of the phone where the power button is. It can still be used for fingerprint gestures. Unlocking the phone with the new side-mount fingerprint sensor is almost instantaneous. The iris scanner has been retained from the previous generation but it has never worked well for me and I don't recommend it. Personally, while I like the new fingerprint scanner, I am less thrilled about the angular design as I think it is harder to hold in my hand comfortably.

The colors have changed slightly. The regular edition now comes in Rose Gold with 128GB of storage (up from 64) and the premium edition comes with 256GB of storage. They still claim it is platinum, however I find that it is darker than the previous generation and closer to a space grey. Both devices have what Samsung refers to as "edge glow", this is a layer in the edges of the glass imbued with color so that the reflections in the light glow. The rose gold version glows red, and the platinum version glows blue. It's a very beautiful look that is hard to capture on camera.

The new T9 keyboard is however a large improvement and is much easier to type on than the previous generation's oversized monstrosity. Ultimately, that's what the W series is about, so if the T9 keyboard is bad the whole phone is pointless. The engineers knew this and made a necessary change. Typing on the W2019 is truly a joy.

Compared to the W2018, the color temperature of the screens seems different. The W2019 seems bluer and the previous generation seems more yellow.

One major change I am not happy with: Both wireless charging and MST have been removed. Although it was impossible to use MST outside of China since the device's Samsung Pay app only accepts Chinese bank cards, the removal of wireless charging is extremely frustrating. While I understand they wanted to maximize the battery capacity by increasing from 2300 to 3000mah (a 25% increase) and while I also know there are heat concerns revolving the higher clock speed of the SD845, removing features at this price point is a really ballsy move on Samsung and shows too much hubris. I hope the next generations brings this feature back, preferably with reverse wireless charging as well. Frankly, the wireless charging fiasco almost has me feeling ripped off, with the only saving grace of this device being the following section: performance

    PERFORMANCE:

The SD845 is clearly a far superior chip to the SD835. Gaming performance in Fortnite was significantly improved, with the W2019 easily able to handle the game at epic settings with 3D resolution set to 100%. The W2018 struggled with the game set to high. Battery life is also improved thanks to the increase of the battery size from 2300 to 3000mah, however the SD845 has a higher base clockspeed which is part of the reason why the engineers decided to increase battery size. In any case, I am fully satisfied with the device performance especially under high load. It does however get extremely warm, not enough to be alarmed but just something to note.

    CAMERA:

The camera is the same array as on the S9+ and Note9. For the first time ever the W series has a dual rear camera and 8mp autofocus front facing camera, replacing the 5mp non-autofocus from the previous generation.

The cameras take great shots, but I'm not sure the dual camera system is really a feature or a gimmick. In my experience, in most lighting situations pressing the "2x" button doesn't actually use the telephoto lens but instead uses the regular lens with digital zoom. Only in ideal lighting situations is the telephoto lens actually used. Of course, the telephoto lens is always used in portrait mode. The dual lens portrait mode is definitely better than the fake blur effect that was available on the W2018. Also, the improved ISP in the 845 allows for 4k@60 and other shooting modes that simply were not available on the previous generation. Unique to the W2019 is the ability to watermark your photos, for some reason this is popular in China. Otherwise, it's the same as the Note 9, so if you like that camera you will also like this one. Personally, I would have preferred the wide angle lens from the S10 instead of the telephoto, but I can see why they wanted to emphasize the portrait mode,

    SOFTWARE:

This phone is running 8.1 Oreo with Good Lock. 9.0 Pie will be available starting in August. Frankly, for the price of this device, I am annoyed how long it takes to get updates. For $2700 this needs to be getting updates at the same time as the Note and S lines, or at least only a little after. August is almost 6 months late, and I just don't see the excuse for a company with the resources of Samsung.

New software features include Dolby Atmos, but since the device doesn't have dual speakers it is only available when using headphone and only when using the phone's internal DAC. So for me, it's basically useless as I usually prefer an external DAC. I will only use this over bluetooth with the newer Galaxy Buds.

That being said, there is still only a mainland Chinese firmware for this device. However, this time around the thing is properly Google Play certified, so Google Pay works! This was a major gripe on the previous version, especially since rooting trips Knox. But some of the downsides of Chinese firmware are still present: the default browser searches with Baidu (google is not selectable), and Samsung Pay is stuck with Mainland Unionpay cards. I wish there was a way to change all of this, but the method I used to change CSC without root on Nougat no longer works since Oreo. Samsung should really just allow the user to select the region themselves and stop tying it to the firmware.

The firmware still has many bugs that make it feel unfinished (I'm looking at you Samsung keyboard)

    PACKAGING:

The luxury box of the W series has been maintained. This year it is a combination of both calf and snake leather with wooden inner trays. The AKG headphones still include the leather carrying case as you would find in the $99 retail package. However, the premium edition for the W2018 included a case whereas the W2019 gives no accessories aside from the earphones/case, charging brick and cable, and the USB-C OTG adapter. For the price point this really should include more, maybe a 512GB SD card, or Galaxy Watch. I know the preorders for the S10 are including Galaxy Buds, so come on Samsung, throw us a bone.

I did manage to get a case on JD.com which is a knockoff designed to look like the W2018 official case but sized to fit the W2019 and am happy to report it looks and feels great. But I still think Samsung should include their own again, especially with the individually numbered premium edition.

    OVERALL:

So, overall this is a really minor upgrade to the W2018. The performance is better, the camera is better, and the battery is increased in size. The software finally fixes the play store certification issue. But THEY TOOK AWAY MY WIRELESS CHARGING! And for that, I can't really forgive Samsung. Especially not for $2700. This is still the best flip phone on the market, and really the only phone in this category, so it has no competition. But it seems to me that it has taken three steps forward and one step back. I hope Samsung learns from its mistakes with the W2020. Maybe we'll even get reverse wireless charging. Until then, I'll be begrudgingly plugging this thing in every night.

Dolby Atmos sucks, when listening to music

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 08:14 PM PST

I think for music its total garbage. ( At least on my galaxy Tab S3) I spend some time comparing dolby atmos on and off with my Studio Headphones.

When hearing classical music, i feel like i can hear much more details with dolby atmos off. Also when the music gets really quiet, dolby atmos shows strange behaviour and varies the volume. Just listen to this piece on spotify and compare: Maurice Ravel, Eduardo Mate - Bolero, M. 81

I also compared techno music. For some tracks dolby atmos totally changes the bass. I dont know how to properly explain this, but just compare this track on spotify and you will notice: Reset Robot - Self Existence

    What are your thoughts?

Edit: did the same comparison on Computer with Dolby Atmos for Headphones. There, i cant spot any difference between dolby atmos on or off..
