Is it possible to actually work only as an indie Android developer?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 07:50 AM PST

I mean can you pay all your bills, live a good life etc. Like any good paid worker as an indie Android developer?

By indie developer I mean you would publish apps on Google play without help of any other person/company. And it's your only way of income.

I'm asking this because I have had successful projects before which like all Android websites talked about but still it never made enough to actually live off it?

Is there anyone here that has done this? I know it's possible to get a ton of money if you make like a huge complicated game or software, but like there aren't that many of those on Google play that aren't done by big or small companies.

2 of my apps suspended for repetitive content

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 12:27 AM PST

I would like to get advice from you guys, because Google suspended two of my apps mistakenly.I have filled the appeal form but I get BOT response always.

These apps are unique in code, design and content, so I'm 100% sure that Google suspended my apps by mistake but I always get a respond from a BOT called Ned (see below). Doesn't matter what my message is, I always get the same respond. I have asked few times to write 'elephant' in the reply to make sure the reply is not by a BOT, but there was no elephant in the reply...

Here are the 2 suspended apps cached version:

    Google reply:

Thanks for contacting the Google Play team. After review, we've confirmed our initial decision and we won't be reinstating your app at this time. Repetitive content violates our Spam policy and is prohibited on Google Play. Developers are important partners in maintaining a great user experience on Google Play and we appreciate your cooperation. If you do choose to re-publish a new version of your app, please review the Developer Program Policies to make sure your app is compliant with our policies. Regards, Ned The Google Play Team

    Why do you use Dagger?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 05:51 AM PST

I have started to delve into Android development recently. I see a heavy use of Libraries and Design Patterns in Android Development compared to iOS. I am fine with using RX Libraries, Retrofit, Timber, Image Libraries and other famous libraries except for Dagger. I hate it to my guts, though I have to use it because all my peers are using it like they are controlled by some curse.

My rules for using a Library are: It should be easily understandable, Learning curve should not be steep, Replacing/ Removing the library should not cost more that 2 hours, It should not make the code untraceable, Should not introduce a lot of Generated code. It should pollute the code base.

I believe, Dagger fails to tick anything.

I am a great fan of DI and I always review code to have no dependencies instantiated within a class or method. It makes it easily testable. And I agree that if it is a project with a very complicated dependency tree we will have some trouble providing them using controller and managers. But, is dagger worth the pain for using it in Small to Medium Sized projects?

For example, the other day I got a 3 year old project that uses Dagger 1 due for a feature upgrade. How do I convince the Product owner that I need extra 2 or 3 days to learn how Dagger 1 worked before starting to work. I have seen so many developers still using pre 2.10 versions of Dagger.

    Additional help Needed: I still don't know how to Lazily load a dependency with Dagger. Is that doable with Dagger? Edit: Answer found: @Inject Lazy<Dependency> dependency;

Configure android mini pc as display client?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:39 PM PST

I want to run some TVs as digital signage.

I know that there are some app solutions out there like viewneo and NoviSign , And they use android mini pcs for this, But they charge a monthly fee etc, and I already have a qnap signage server that works. I just need a client and I can't seem to find any information on how to set up a gadget to simply display a url on boot without any frame.

Does anyone know how I can accomplish this?

Instructions how to configure phone when your app is long running

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 12:42 AM PST

I just found this web page https://dontkillmyapp.com/ and I find it useful so I want to share it with you.

I have multiple long running apps and I often receive complaints from users that app is not working. Most common cause is "smart" battery saver feature of some phones. I had a few prepared instructions for some phones (https://android.hubalek.net/troubleshooting.html) but page above is smarter solution IMHO.

It is open source, so if you are aware of some other phones that need specific configuration, you can contribute via pull request at https://github.com/urbandroid-team/dont-kill-my-app).

    Regarding Square's Interview Process

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 09:49 PM PST

    Hello!

I had seen Square post up some job listings for their Android development team. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what their interview process is like for Android dev. After checking Glassdoor, it seems to be your run of the mill algos/ds, I didn't see anything Android related as early as April of 2018.

Is this still true? Is this information known?

I have final .apk - Can Google handle subscriptions/one time payments for me via Play?

I would like to provide app for some paying customers. I already have .apk and I just need Google Play to make it downloadable for a couple of $. Even subscription would be nice. Simply... if a user pays monthly fee app is available for him.

    Step out of comfortable world

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 07:06 AM PST

I'm a android developer with more than 4 years of experiences. I'm able to code iOS apps too although I'm not a master in this field. In the past year, I work a the technical role and manage a small team of 5 people: devOps, iOS, android, QA and backend dev. I didn't code much as before and stepped in the world of backend, software architecture and cloud services still without any coding but I'm quite confident to step in any new areas accept for android which is old world to me. Should I try to get a new job for mobile team leader where I can lead iOS devs not just android devs, a team leader for a bigger team with a better salary? I mean should we step out of our old world to challenge ourself? Anyone could share your experience please?

What is the efficient way to learn android programming faster?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 07:05 AM PST

I'm new to programming. I have good knowledge of c and fundamental knowledge of java. It's been like a 2 months or so I've been trying to learn android and I feel like I'm making no real time progress,Kinda makes me frustrated. When I watch tutorial or read online courses I feel like I understood it but when I try to code I get stuck at basic things. So what will be the best approach to learn quicker ? Motivate a fellow newbie.

Should I be happy with my salary?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 09:22 PM PST

First off I posted this in /r/cscareerquestions and wanted to post it here as well because as android dev's the input might be different.

I am an Android Developer with 1 year freelance about 2 years experience will full-time work(2 jobs). 5 months ago I took my 2nd full-time position at another company - without taking a raise. I left a very small start-up of about 10 employees and joined a small company with probably 75-150 people total (not even sure). I took this transition to get more of a team environment, a better culture, the promise of no overtime/weekends, and overall more experience.

I applied for the position of a mid-level developer to work with another person on a project that has been in the works for the last year and was offered a position at $75k/year and I took it. In the last 5 months, a lot has changed and a lot more responsibility has been put on my shoulders. A new project was being started to which a "senior" dev was hired to run/operate. The guy turned out to be a liar and long story short was relieved of his position. We still had a deadline to meet so I was given control of the entire project, as well as maintaining and assisting with what I was originally hired for. It was now my duty to jump in and pick up the slack. I had to restructure the entire project, fix the disaster that was created and continue with new features. I've been consistently working 50 hour work weeks/weekends to reach the deadline(I made it) and make up for lost time.

This project is written using all the fun new architecture components: Navigation, Room, MVVM, LiveData, DataBinding, Kotlin

The advice that I'm seeking is if I should be happy at $75k? I currently work in Denver, CO and that is more of an entry-level salary in this area. Is 5 months too soon to bring this up with my lead? If so, what isn't too soon? How should one approach this properly? If I ask and get denied, should I start looking elsewhere or does that short amount of time on a resume reflect poorly on me? I personally feel by stepping in, taking charge, working extra hours and heading a project that met its first deadline deserves more than an entry-level salary...But I also don't want to screw myself by thinking this way.

Thanks for any help/advice given as well as for anyone that took the time to read this.

Help getting the WhatsApp keyboard to be my main keyboard for everything.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 09:04 AM PST

I like the WhatsApp keyboard, its the closest thing I have to my iPhone keyboard. Now I understand that that keyboard is just for WhatsApp itself, but, knowing how android is open and highly customizable, is it possible to somehow extract the keyboard from the WhatsApp apk and turn it into a separate keyboard app?
