    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

    You don't need 7200RPMs

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 07:25 PM PST

So in every single build I'm seeing people get a main SSD and a 7200RPM storage drive. You can typically get double the space if you buy a 5400RPM drive.

The main idea of drive speed came from when your OS and all program files were on your mechanical drive. Your main drive. (Remember 10,000RPM Raptor drives?) Now with the OS on your SSD, these faster access times are not necessary.

Get a 7200RPM if it's your intent, but you can get a 4TB 5400RPM drive for under $100 USD so it is leaving a lot of space on the table to get a faster access time that you will never need.

Edit: A lot of people are commenting that I'm saying "don't buy SSDs." This is false. If anything, I'm saying rely on SSDs for your main program files and use 5400RPM for files not frequently accessed or fully-loaded into RAM.

Edit2: People don't know what xcopy does. Check out Steam Mover. Moves your games on and off your SSD for when you need them to load quickly for a few weeks as you play. Then move off the SSD to save space. No deleting or reinstalling required.

Edit3: People are bringing up price saying 7200RPM is "the same price". In the United States, 4TB of 7200RPM space starts at $193. 4TB of 5400RPM space starts at $99. That's where my numbers come from. Amazon. Take the $100 in savings and get another 500GB SSD from Amazon for $90 (the sales price they'd had recently)

Went from Radeon HD 4870 to GTX 1070 ti. Mind blown.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 05:39 AM PST

The difference is breathtaking. I struggled to play simple older titles, and now I'm flying. Radeon 4870 is 512 mb ram while GTX is the 8gb DDR5. Went from a toddler's toy car to a ferrari. Big jump.

The basic goal is to build a monster video editing workstation. We routinely use Premiere/After Effects/Davinci Resolve with Red 8K RAW footage/A7S ii footage/ Canon RAW footage (clog from C200s) and need something that can chew through editing/vfx and rendering of everything.

The idea is to use the M.2 drives for OS/Apps and scratch and then RAID 0 the 2TB ssds for decent media storage. All these would get backed up daily to the 8TB external.

I'd like to go bigger on the drive storage, but that can always be added onto based on needs. I'm not even sure if the 9960X is worth the price tag, but it would be great to have all those cores.

The motherboard is a mixed bag because while I love that the ASRock has 10GBase-T built in, I haven't found clear thunderbolt 3 support information (through an AiC) but still looking around there.

Any suggestions/advice would be very much appreciated. Trying to get the best bang for the buck, and 7K seems like plenty of wiggle room for a dedicated workstation.

Planning on buying a GTX 1060 and I have a few questions.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:00 PM PST

I've got a lot of questions for you: 1: Are my parts compatible if I were to upgrade? 2: Will the 1060 be bottle-necked by my CPU? 3: Is it a good purchase? If you think so, link me a good place to buy one.

My setup so far is: Motherboard: Gigabyte - GA-990XA-UD3 R5 CPU: AMD 6300fx (4GHz) GPU: AMD Radeon R9 270 I think that's all the relevant stuff. If its not, I can get the others. Thanks for your help!

    Over Clocking gone potentially wrong

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 07:22 AM PST

Hello, I have had my computer for about a year and a half and yesterday I thought I would try get into overclocking, I don't really know why but I read a bit on it and was recommended it by another redditor to give it a shot. So I figured I'd go slowly. My specs are a 1700X @ 3.4 GhZ, trident Z 3000 ram, MOBO is MSI 350B Tomahawk and gpu is a Gigabyte 1060 6GB but I am almost certain the gpu had nothing to do with it.

I at first went from 3.4 to 3.8 and noticed my ram was set to 2133 so I moved it to 2400. Ran a stress test, everything was fine.

Then I went to 3.8 to 4.2 but then this is where I think I made my mistake, I thought my ram was 3200 so I moved it to that setting in the Bios. Upon rebooting it said OC failed and brought me back to the bios I nervously moved the Ram back to 2400 and just hit save and reboot this time I got an infinite black screen with no boot or anything.

I see I needed a jumper cap but I ended up finding a way to reset the CMOS which was to take out the battery and unplugged the system this worked. I moved everything back to auto the way I found it and the computer appeared to be fixed----- but I have few issues now,

    1. Oddly enough the sound through my speakers is VERY quiet. I have no idea if this issue is related but I plug in using a AUX but it used to get very loud before, has a failed OC ever affected a sound card on a mobo?

    2. This one is more problematic for me, when I try to boot games (Pubg and Subnautica are the ones I tried) it takes about 60 seconds for them to pop up. Plus last night I was having problems getting into games and I kept getting server disconnected and if I did get into a game I would just be stuck at the loading screen and never actually get into a game. I don't know how connectivity issues would be happening and I know this is more for the PUBG community but maybe there is overlap.

So if anyone has any experience with the above issues Id applicate any info on it.

TL;DR Did some small over clocking, got black screen while messing with settings in bios, restored factory settings on bios, game back to some sound issues and connectivity issues.

    ASRock Z390 Extreme4 build - mobo gets power/lights up, fans won't spin

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:30 PM PST

    Build list:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Dr.StrangeBalls/saved/fkkr6h

Just finished this build and was pleasantly greeted with the onboard LEDs of the mobo glowing, but I'm having fan problems. GPU fans spin successfully. The CPU fan spins up but stops after just a couple seconds. Case fans don't spin up at all. Have checked all fan header connections and am at a loss.

Thanks for any help or suggestions offered.

A couple days ago, I was given $500 towards buying a new graphics card. I don't mind spending some of my own money on top of that. Is now a good time to get a nice card, or is there a reason to expect prices to drop in the near future?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:30 PM PST

Currently have a 970, but I want to upgrade for vr and 1080@144.

Also, my motherboard is an Asus Gryphon bought in 2014. Is there any possibility of problems with newer NVidia cards? I'm assuming not, but thought I'd ask.

    Build upgrade advice

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 11:59 AM PST

    Hi everyone!

I haven't done a full upgrade of my PC in a long time (7+ years) and was looking for some advice. The budget would be around £1000, maybe more depending on what I can get with the extra money and if it would be worth it long term. Looking for something with a bit of longevity to it so it can last another 5+ years.

    My current setup is:
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3
    CPU: Intel i7 3930k
    GPU: 1060 6gb
    RAM: 16gb Corsair Dominator Platinum
(not sure if any other info is needed)

    Thanks!

Still cant get a boot usb to work

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:28 PM PST

So since I have gotten my pc I have been trying to instal windows but everytime I try to place a bootable usb in it keeps giving me the error 0x8007000D stating Windows cannot open the required file C:\Sources\install.wim.

The file is there and it isnt corrupt. No way it could be after 2 other downloads of the ISO on two different connections and devices. Yet no matter what I keep getting this error. The only place I can use to try to make these things is at work so I cant even use Rufus; just Unetbootin. And from what I saw no one seems to have my issue when using it.

    2700X worth it?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:24 PM PST

So my current setup is Ryzen 5 2600 with an EVGA CLC 280 cooler Asrock X470 Taichi 8x2 GB 3000 MHz C16 RX 580 8GB

I just upgraded to this (minus GPU, had that for a bit). I found a guy that is selling his 2700X for $240 and I'm wondering if it's worth it upgrading the CPU and selling off the 2600 and then eventually upgrading the GPU when navi rolls around?

Tips after everything turns on properly

Just completed my first build and after everything turned on, I would like to know some tips to manually boost some of my hardware and get everything set up properly .

I've installed windows and my graphics drivers as well as enabling my hard drive so that my PC recognizes it.

What else should I be doing that is crucial and/or beneficial for my gaming experience?

Question about fan headers and splinters.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:20 PM PST

So I'm considering using an Asus prime b450-a/csm MATX board for my first build. I noticed it only has 2 4 pin fan headers. I have more fans than that. I see they are gaged for 1 amp and the fans I'm using at at .3 amps. Does that mean I could use a three four pin fan splitters to be able to use my fans? Thanks

Not sure if this is where I should post this, or r/techsupport

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:18 PM PST

So my friend just got his new PC built and he has windows 10 version 1803. He downloaded java, the latest version and whenever he tries to run a .jar file, a command prompt opens and then immediately closes. He can't install the 5zig mod for minecraft or any other mod. I have tried to help him with many solutions but nothing right now. The only way to run a .jar file is to make a .bat file executing said .jar file. But this method doesn't properly work sometimes. Could anyone help me with this? Is it because he is using windows 10 1803 when 1809 is the latest version? Could Java 8 Update 191 only work on the latest version of windows ten? He did check for updates but 1809 is not available for him yet.
