Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:23 AM PST Basically as the title. I have encountered at least 20 instances with app download/update failing and giving me that string of error code in the past 3 or 4 years using Windows 8/10 across multiple devices, including Surfaces. Sometimes a restart fixes it, sometimes one has to Google the error code and troubleshoot for half an hour or more, sometimes it only fixes when you reinstall or refresh Windows. My question is, what is so different that Windows store produces significantly more errors than Google Play or the Apps Store? They do occasionally have issues, but most are significantly easier to solve, and in the past 8 years of using Android and 9 years of using iOS, nothing really occurred that required extensive troubleshooting with error codes, factory resets etc. I'm still a huge Windows & Surface fan. It just feels that for some reason, even Android surpasses Windows in these basic reliability issues. (I know for productivity and a lot of things, Windows is much more capable, but why is the basic stuff so difficult?) [link] [comments]
New Power Save Mode/Technique? Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:06 PM PST Hey, So I believe sometime in October, or November I read this article on PCGamer, or some tech website regarding a new power saving mode Microsoft is testing, or implementing in Windows. Something like, where the system analyzes the processes being used and sees if particular components need the amount of the energy they are withdrawing. Sort of like, if one is just using excel heavily, most power is focused towards the storage and CPU usage whereas a discrete GPU card (say RTX 2070 MaxQ), isn't really being utilised that it needs all of the power it demands to produce the results. So it limits power delivery to the component, in order to save excess power being used therefore saving total power. Apple just switches the GPU being used to the integrated Intel GPU. Can anyone please point me to it's source once again? One of my friend is asking for evidence, but I just cannot seem to find it using related google search terms. Thanks. [link] [comments]
Laptop Windows 7 running slow and fan loud recently, CPU low, HD low, RAM low... Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:58 PM PST Please someone who actually knows or knows a little more deep tech than the average Microsoft Answers person; the graphical frame rate drops and the fan starts blowing high, but when I check Task Manager or Resource Monitor, CPU System Idle is between 85-99% (even when clicking all users in the Processes tab), and HD read/write is low... I can't see what's slowing things down or causing the fan to run high. If I close all foreground windows (except for this one Chrome tab) and quit Slack, after a while it mostly normalizes but the frame rate still isn't great all the time (like it used to be) and the fan is randomly running low and high. I recently reset BIOS settings to default (after updating EVERYTHING), and I just cannot figure out what's going on... did an update intentionally slow things down? I could try to run Process Explorer but I don't know what to check as the CPU/RAM/Disk usage is very low and just not looking abnormal anywhere. EDIT: In Resource Monitor, I just noticed "System" and "System Interrupts" are running around 10% each constantly... but I'm not finding much out about those yet. Note: I'm worried about the same problems being worse on a Windows 10 [link] [comments]
Windows 7 questions - Unsupported Hardware Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:24 PM PST TL;DR - How do I get rid of annoying Unsupported Hardware pop-up on windows 7? Also, please let me know if this is better suited for r/techsupport. TIA! This is a fairly obvious issue that I knew was going to happen when installing windows 7 on my machine. I'm running a compatibility nightmare to be honest. i5-7600k, Asus Z170 Pro, Zotac 1070ti AMP, then the extras - disc drive, psu, HDD/SSD, wifi card. So, out of the gate I needed a bios update to get this amalgamation working(I didn't read into generations before buying the 7600k), just got lucky that a BIOS update was all I had to do. Running a 7th gen Intel CPU obviously brings up the "Unsupported Hardware" pop up in Win7, and I just want it to go away. Once updates for Win7 are cut off completely and it's officially unsupported by MS, I'm just gonna always have internet off, as I only keep 7 around for syncing my ipod and compatibility on games. I won't ever check for updates anyway, and it's already an incredibly stable OS, and security will not matter with no internet connection. I read that I can remove KB4015549 and KB4012218 and Win7 will stop bitching at me, so I searched for them in installed updates, and no dice, I don't even have them. Where do I go from here? That was the only "fix" my (horrible) google-fu would supply me with. [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Jan 2019 03:26 PM PST The title says everything. It's annoying to me that the folders appears in another place than the top. Extra question: All new folder is opened with the "list view mode", but I prefer the "medium-sized icon view mode", how do I make the "medium-sized icon view mode" be the default view mode in my system? Of course not for every folder, but for the new ones. Note: I don't know if this is relevant, but I have no experience with Windows 8.x, 7 and Vista, I directly came from Windows XP to Windows 10 [link] [comments]
Getting the REAL date of creation of a file. Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:23 PM PST Is that possible or once I move the files from a PC to another PC I'm done? I want to know the dates of some audio and midi files I made because I want to order them by date. So I can really see how I developed. [link] [comments]
Battery saver mode not available? Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:11 PM PST The most it lets me adjust is up to Better Battery. Wonder if I may have accidentally changed the settings? [link] [comments]
The “Photos” app is always super high up in the task manager. Why? Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:58 AM PST The Photos app constantly sits in the background using about 300-500MB of RAM just doing nothing until I end the task. Why? Can I stop this? [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:09 AM PST Brought a season pass on Xbox, Xbox broke, and now I'm trying to watch the show on my computer but the store keeps telling me to use Windows Hello. I tried searching the files with no luck and there doesn't appear to be anything about it online aside from news articles. My laptop is using latest version of Windows 10. [link] [comments]

I got a bug lately with Xbox Controller crashing the game upon disconnection Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:34 AM PST Hello fellas, I'm reposting what i posted on DS3 reddit expecting maybe more answer to my problem : "Sorry if I make mistake with my english, I'll try to be clear : I lost my controller USB adapter since few months and i found it yesterday so i was like "nice finally some dark souls after few month" but i figured that when my controller disconnect from the pc (the USB cable is old so sometime it DC for few second then reconnect) the game crash. At first i thought that the controller disconnected because the game crashed, but i noticed this bug followed me on other game such as Nioh (well i mean it only happens on Nioh and Dark souls so far atm). I also noticed that none of the games actually startup (it freeze then crash) if the controller is not connected to the PC, so i understood that the controller make my game crash when the controller disconnect. So here's my questions : Any one had the same bug ? Do you know how to fix it ? Why does my controller is required for the games to launch? Also the controller appear twice as HID Game controller and Unknown Device but still work in game Thanks for taking time to read TLTR; Its like my controller is a required file that allow the games to launch but also make them crash upon disconnection" [link] [comments]
Google chrome video glitch after installing windows update Posted: 30 Jan 2019 08:35 AM PST I'm having Windows pro N version. After installing media features in Windows 10 N update, I'm having glitches when i run video on google chrome. When i start a video, black screen appears in the whole screen for 1 second and disappears. The funny part is this happens only couple of times when i start my PC and then everything is normal. I tested in other browser and lunch some videos and everything is fine, so Its safe to assume that i have problem with google chrome only. Does anyone share the same problem or can help me out how to solve this ? Maybe roll back to some other update and reinstall ? the update i installed manually : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4134255/media-feature-pack-for-windows-10-n-october-2018 [link] [comments]
Update times on new desktops vs new laptops Posted: 30 Jan 2019 08:21 AM PST I am responsible for handling computer inventory for one of my clients. When someone at one of their sites needs a new machine, I do the initial Windows 10 setup, apply updates, install some software, set up email, and send it on its way. When I do this with a new desktop unit, the Windows update process typically takes 3-4 hours. On the other hand, applying initial updates to a new laptop is done in a matter of minutes. Can anyone explain the difference in the speeds? The computers are all Dell, but the specs have varied a quite a bit over time with the same results while updating. Things like processor, RAM, or SSD vs HDD haven't had a material effect on the gap in update speeds, and the OS has been Windows 10 Pro in all cases. Has anyone else experienced this?
