Thanks to this subreddit, I can now get blazing speeds on my wifi devices Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:38 PM PST Prior to browsing some posts here, I hadn't thought to simply connect a quality AP to my ISP-provided router (connecting to a fiber channel). Because the wifi is dismal on the ISPs router, I had installed an Archer C7 to handle the wifi duties and pass-through DHCP to the ISPs router. This generally worked, but I was getting horrible upload/download rates from the Archer. Queue 3 days ago, I found some discussion about the Ubiquiti UniFi AC Mesh AP. Ordered on Amazon that night and installed today. Now I'm seeing awesome throughput over WiFi and control software is pretty easy to use if you've poked around a wifi router's settings before. Speed tests done on my iPhone XS with Ookla Speedtest app. Archer C7 (single file test)
LTE - Verizon (single file test)
UniFi AC (single file test)
So, I guess I'm just saying thanks. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Running ethernet throughout my house Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:36 AM PST Hi I'm renovating my new house completely and want to add ethernet ports in most rooms since the walls will be open. I know where I'm running the cables and how to wire the ports, but I don't know the best way to connect to a router. After running all my cat 5e cables from the ports to my routers location, can I join them so that only one cable goes into the router rather than 7? I've done some research and it looks like the only way to do this is with a network switch? I'm an electrician so it seems like it would be a lot easier to strip and connect the wires in the wall using [wago's](https://www.google.co.uk/search?biw=1920&bih=938&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=o99RXPjXMr6J1fAPna6fiAY&q=wago&oq=wago&gs_l=img.3..35i39j0l9.17364.17525..17787...0.0..0.72.125.2......1....1..gws-wiz-img.......0i67.sYzPp4D2B0o) but I'm not sure if ethernet works the same as electricity haha Would love some advice! Can I use a second router to avoid my roommate from stealing my bandwidth? Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:10 AM PST So my roommate and I connect to his router and pay equally for the internet. Unfortunately when he went on a business trip he told me he did some port forwarding or something so he could remote in and ever since I get so little bandwidth that I am completely unable to play games and even Netflix struggles to load. I've already brought it up 4-5 times in the past month but he maintains his internet is fine and he doesn't remember changing anything. I need to get a router for my next place anyway and I'm wondering if setting up a separate router will give me my own bandwidth. I tried to do some research but had trouble finding anything. Also I know it has something to do with his computer because unplugging his PC's Ethernet from the router completely resolves any issues I have. And I have verified that he is not doing any extensive downloading. Edit: thanks everyone I appreciate the responses and what you are saying makes sense. I will try factory resetting the router and if that does not work I will just deal with the confrontation. :) [link] [comments] |
Devices not visible on modem/switch/router network – DHCP issue? Posted: 30 Jan 2019 04:24 PM PST Hi there, So I've been having issues with getting my home network to work. Basically, a number of devices on part of my network are invisible on the rest. They appear to be using a different DHCP mask than the rest of the network. Specifically my (wired) network is set up as follows: My internet connection is a VDSL line that comes into an under-stair closet which is unfortunately not the best place for a WiFi router. To compensate for this problem I moved the router to the living room, and connected it to the wifi via a Netgear ProSafe Plus 8-port switch. The problem lies in that whilst I am connected to the living room router's WiFi network I can't seem to connect to the printer and NAS, which are connected directly to the switch, (or indeed see the switch or modem whilst I'm connected to the WiFi network from the router). The living room router is set up to be the DHCP server, and in theory everything should be visible to it. In practice I can see the NAS and printer (which is an ethernet-only Brother HL-L2360D) only if I am connected directly to the switch with an ethernet cable. I can only see the PS4 and A/V receiver on the router. Where it gets weirder is that whilst there are only two clients connected to the router itself, in the router's device list I can see a lot more than that connected, but with IP addresses that do not respond to queries via ping or my browser, (so presumably some of those devices are the NAS, managed switch, printer and modem – all of whom have web interfaces – entering those 'unknown' IP addresses doesn't seem to be able to load any web interfaces. I would describe myself as someone who is a relatively comfortable Mac and Windows 'power user' who is isn't very comfortable with the nitty-gritty details of home networking. I am generally comfortable using Terminal or Command Prompt, but weak on networking level use cases. I gained a lot of knowledge from this sub-reddit's wiki and this guy's website, and can broadly follow higher level advice, but am concerned that this might be a more specific, device-level issue. My gut feeling here is that something is going wrong with the local DHCP set up. In theory I've disabled DHCP server functionality for both the modem and the switch, but it still seems like there are two networks in existence on my home network – one for the WiFi router and one for the switch. If this isn't the best place for me to seek assistance, would anyone be able to recommend elsewhere? I would be happy to pay someone (UK-based) to provide me with support, but honestly don't know where to start or to ask for help. Thank you in advance for your help! You guys are great – like a glass of ice-water for people in (networking) hell!
Edit: So it turns out I can't just post StackEdit's version of markdown and hope it works on reddit. The weird syntax that I wrote at the beginning of the first paragraph should have displayed as such. [link] [comments] |

Cannot Connect AirPort Extreme as Router on AT&T BGW210-700 Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:18 PM PST The fact that Im forced to use this BGW210-700 router/modem combo sucks but it makes it worse that I cannot for the love of god configure IP passthrough. The issue is I want to setup a PiHole which is not compatible with the BGW, so I have been trying to set up IP Passthrough. When I save the cascade router settings I keep getting this error:
This is the guide I'm following:

Two Ubiquiti wireless APs, one randomly dropping wireless Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:52 PM PST Hey guys, I have a two story house.. the wifi was dodgy at the back, so I moved my wired AP to the basement, and added a wireless one in the upstairs hallway. It works great 99% of the time.. however, a couple times a week, we will be using it, and it will drop out for 10 minutes or so. The light stays green on both units, but wifi drops on the one upstairs... I am not a network guy... I am a super casual. Can anyone tell me what the problem maybe? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Nighthawk R7000 has been slow for years, tried everything Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:51 PM PST I bought my R7000 awhile ago and was living with family at the time so I didn't have access to the ISP info. After moving out to my own place I set up the internet with 100/15 and never got download even close to that. I tried messing with settings and googled every possible solution but nothing worked. A few months ago I upgraded to 400/30 and I always get that upload speed but download is always around 200-250 tops. Here is some extra info: Every time I tested speeds I used a hardwired computer plugged into the number one spot on the router. No one else was on network. I'm using a modem from Spectrum that has no wifi built in. When I plug directly into that I get the speeds I pay for plus usually a bit more. I've tried using old firmware and the most up to date, still no change. QoS is off, Turing it on would slow my speeds down even more. It's not a huge issue but just sucks that I bought this thing for like 200 bucks and it's been a terrible experience. I can provide more info if anyone needs anymore. Thanks for your help. TP-Link Archer A7 only getting 10Mbps up and down on 75/75 Verizon FIOS connection Posted: 30 Jan 2019 03:02 AM PST Hello I recently bought an Archer A7 to replace my very old Verizon-supplied Actiontec router. I am having a bit of a problem with it though, after getting connected I am only getting 10Mbps both up and down whether I am over Wi-Fi or ethernet. I've got a Cat5e cable going from the wall into the router. What is most strange to me is that if I hook my Actiontec back up and run a cable from the Actiontec's LAN port to the Archer A7's WAN, I can get 85 Mbps down and 70 or so up...it is only when I take the Actiontec out of of the chain and go directly from the wall into the Archer A7 that the speed seems to get capped. Is there any reason why this could be happening, or anything I could do to fix it? Does Verizon somehow know I am trying to replace their hardware and capping the speed (maybe a silly question)? Thanks EDIT: Thanks for the responses, everyone. I fought with it all day and couldn't resolve the speed issue, going to return the router and try a R7000. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2019 08:24 PM PST Subject says it all for the most part. I use a NAS and I run a Plex server, so I do a lot of bandwidth traffic. I also do photography for a living so at any given time I'm loading dozens of gigs of data into the NAS and then pulling it into my processing apps. I hardwire in most of the time to my desktop, but I do occasionally link wirelessly on laptops, iPads etc too. I'm upgrading internet - from 75 down to 400. The new speed makes me wanna optimize my router performance too. Some preliminary research showed that Netgear Nighthawk line is good; as well as a new Asus. But I also read some about a Synology Router that is great. So I'm open to suggestions! Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

Upgrading to 500mbps, will my equipment be able to handle it? Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:17 AM PST Hi, In 2 months I will be moving to a new apartment that is serviced by our local fiber ISP. I can't wait to upgrade from 20mbps for $65/mo to 500mbps for $50/mo. That said I currently have an Arris SB6141 modem connected to a Netgear R6700 AC1750 router. These two items have served me well on my slow ass connection but I am wondering if they can handle a 500mbps connection and properly serve that via wired and wireless connection when I move. Any and all advice is appreciated! Also if these won't be ideal, recommendations on affordable replacements are welcomed! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:38 PM PST I have received the go ahead for setting up commercial wifi for my dorm to use. Dorm management is restricting us on the specifics of the set up due to contracts with Boingo Wireless and with their construction regulations. Here are the specific restrictions and details on the set up:
The current plan is to use 3 routers (+modem) to provide coverage in 3 hallways. The dorm is a T shape with the modem+router in the center of vertical line of the T. The other two routers will work as secondary access points on the top left and right corners of the T. We intend to use the 2.4hz freq to backhaul to the central router (because we can't use ethernet cables to connect them) because I believe it will have greater range and penetration - we are getting gigabit so I believe it does not require 5ghz especially if we can split it between the three routers. We could then use 5ghz channel or channels (if triband) to connect to each device. I currently am looking at Netgear Docsis 3.1 Modem and the ASUS AC2900 or the Netgear AC5300 for routers. So, does this sound reasonable? What routers would you recommend for this project? Any changes I should do within the constraints (maybe more, cheaper, routers)? Is a wifi backhaul possible with consumer routers? Thank you for any help! [link] [comments] |
How to secure Samba with a sensitive anonymous share? Posted: 30 Jan 2019 01:32 PM PST Hi Reddit community. I've been struggling with my home network setup, and couldn't find a viable solution yet. I'm using Emby with my library files on a Qnap Nas. Unfortunately, Emby can't handle Samba credentials, so use only anonymous access. Qnap is using file ACL's to apply Samba configuration on shared files. A shared folder can also be accessible from specific Ip's too. I've tried to make a ip filtered anonymous share with all needed shares soft linked in it. But ACL's block further access. And I tried to map anonymous connection to semi admin account. Doesn't seem to work. I'm at the end of options I can think of. Except, I was wondering about a Samba proxy like in between, which would make appropriate authenticated connection to the actual Nas shares. Any other idea welcome. Thank you in advance. Tracing/connecting network cables. Advice needed! Posted: 30 Jan 2019 01:30 PM PST Hi all, Let me first preface this by saying that I know very little about home networking, so bear with me. I just moved into a newly built townhouse that is "equipped" for Ethernet. There are 5-7 CAT6 wall plates throughout the house. Today I finally got my internet set up by a technician and realized that the main wiring panel is just a bunch of loose, unlabeled cabling. None of the CAT5 jacks are connected to the network. What I want to do is to get the various CAT5 jacks throughout the house working so that I can hardwire my devices. At this point, I need to know what I equipment I need, and how to go about figuring out what I need to do to make the CAT5 jacks functional. Here are a few pictures for context: Wiring panel: https://i.imgur.com/Gssa6Gw.jpg Wires: https://i.imgur.com/lwTL5jp.jpg At this point, I think I need a tone generator to trace the unlabeled network cables to their respective jacks, and a cable stripper/crimper + CAT5 RJ45 ends. Is there anything I'm missing? What do I plug the stripped/crimped cables into? Any tips as to how to do any of this would be greatly appreciated! EDIT: CAT5, not CAT6. Also, it looks like I need an RJ45 bridge to connect the cable currently in the modem to the stripped/crimped cable that corresponds to the jack I've toned out. [link] [comments] |
Understanding how the Ethernet In my new home is interconnected Posted: 30 Jan 2019 03:36 PM PST Hi all, this might be a long shot but I'm hoping someone knows about my situation and may be able to help. In my new house (I'm in Australia) each room has an Ethernet port and in the kitchen there are two panels which have multiple connection point. One of the panel has 5 Ethernet ports labeled with the various rooms. The other has what looks to be an Ethernet port labeled 'Modem ADSL' and a circular port, labeled 'Modem Cable.' What I'm wondering is if I plug the modem/router into the ADSL slot if the internet will go to all the other rooms or will I have to plug it into the modem and then the modem into each individual rooms slot? The main reason I am asking is because I don't want to have to put the router in the cupboard as it will ruin the Wi-Fi signal. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated, sorry for the possibly confusing question without much information. And finally I can't test it yet because there is no internet to the house yet. Thanks again! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:11 PM PST So today was an absolute disaster trying to start a setup with Ubiquiti and looking for some help. Fios is setup with ONT only already into their router. Now short of just releasing the dhcp from it at letting the edge router lite be on its own which I couldn't do for some unknown reason can I turn off the wifi on the Verizon router and set a dmz ip to connect the edge to? So if I need to revert back to the verzion for wifi while I continue to configure the 4 new Ubiquiti products that I have no idea how to use or set up yet I'll be able to? I currently have the Edge Lite, the 60w poe switch, cloud key, and an access point to set up. I can work on the network during the day but I need to have working wifi every night for my disabled son without exception. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Difficulty Making Cat 5e Connections Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:21 PM PST I ran cat5e and cat 6 wiring throughout my house, and I'm finally getting around to installing male connectors on the ends. Out of the 5 connections I've made so far, only 2 work. My network connection tester doesn't light up at all for the other 3.
TIA! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:12 PM PST I am a teen so i dont know everything about our house but know enough to get by. Tripolar plug and bandwith issues Posted: 30 Jan 2019 01:34 PM PST I've moved to a new house (one of the oldest buildings I've ever seen). They just hooked up the router and stuff. ISP suppose to provide me with 100mbps down but I am getting 4mbps. Thing is speed tests just maxes out at 4mbps and the way that it hits 4mbps is weird because it just hits the 4mbps and doesn't even fluctuate a byte. They gave me this extremely old plug so I am wondering would the plug or the old cable limit the bandwidth to 4mbps like that or there is some other bs going on? And I got this cable running from the plug to my router (an older and shitter version of it) [link] [comments] |
Question on RouterOS and CRS328-24P-4S+RM vs USG Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:16 AM PST Use to have 1gb download via Cable internet, and 50 Mb upload. Recently dropped it to 500Mb download, and 50 Mb upload. Trying to understand the tables from https://mikrotik.com/product/crs328_24p_4s_rm Looks like 64 byte Routing would limit me to 175Mb correct? Basically I am thinking of replacing my USG with the CRS328 as a router, if it can route my full Download speed. The only thing I have setup in the routers are a few IP reservations and a few Port Forwards. Currently I have SWOS on the CRS328 and it plugged into the USG and just using it mainly as a dumb switch. Would like to simplify some and maybe sell the USG off. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2019 08:38 AM PST I've been given the chance to upgrade from my current 100/10 speeds. I'm curious what others real world speeds are like on Cox's gig line and if theres anything I should be aware of. I'm in the Tulsa Oklahoma area. [link] [comments] |
Setting up a VPN with Archer A7 Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:05 PM PST Hello guys, I've recently moved and bought a new router which is the Archer A7. I've noticed it has a feature to act as a VPN server apparently. I've tried to set it up, because i got a fixed IP at my new home and I thought I might try to get Steam-Inhome Streaming running through a VPN, as described HERE. I've enabled the feature on the router and set up a Login for my PC and my Laptop. First I just tried connecting with my laptop to the server through a seperate connection, and it connected successfully, but there was no internet connection unfortunately. I then tried to both connect the desktop and the laptop to the VPN, even though the desktop is directly wired to the A7 anyway. Thought maybe both devices need to be in the *virtual* private network aswell. Unfortunately this didn't resolve the problem either. Cheers DMetal! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:27 AM PST Apparently, my Google-fu is awful, or maybe what I'm looking for doesn't exist. So I'm asking… I'm remodeling an old house room by room, and adding ethernet jacks as we go. What I'd like is for all these cables to terminate in or over (as in flush mount OK, surface mount OK) a particular stud bay in a particular room. I'd like there to be an enclosure/cover containing a mounting block with/for keystones that can either:
The router and a mini-switch will be mounted right near the enclosure. Six or eight surface mounted jacks would be ideal. This is halfway there, but this particular thing is direct mount and I want an enclosure to hide excess spaghetti. Does such a thing exist or am I missing something? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
