Purchased a Laptop recently. Quick question about reliability.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 11:41 AM PST

As mentioned, I bought a laptop recently, the MSI PS42, and it already had a screen defect. Then when I received the replacement, that one was even more defective. Now I'm wondering if I should consider a return.

First, I've seen it answered before but not particularly recently: what are the more reliable laptop brands? I understand QC is an issue with all companies, but one where I can get, like, at least a few months before having to RMA would be good to keep in mind.

Second, any Dell XPS 13 or Asus Zenbook owners, have you experienced any issues? And how did their RMA process go?

    Thanks!

What's a good laptop for less than $600?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 01:12 PM PST

I bought an Asus laptop a few years back which already had frequent freezes where the computer would need to be restarted (this happens about twice per hour or so). It really felt like I got ripped off by the store (which incidentally closed not even a month after I bought it).

To avoid something like that again, I wondered if anyone had any good suggestions for a fast and reliable laptop within my tight $600 budget?

What is the absolute best/reliable laptop for under $1000?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 11:19 PM PST

So I'm not really interested in gaming or any of that, just something that'll last. I'm a future accountant and just need something that won't lag out on me or freeze up. I have a MacBook Air but I worry about it's compatibility to PCs and laptops. Is there a laptop that everyone agrees is just the best and compares in reliablity to MacBook Pro or air? Thanks guys

Looking for a lightweight laptop <$600 for general use and photo editing

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 08:17 AM PST

I don't know much about laptops. I'm asking for a family friend. They intend to use this laptop for day to day things (email, browsing, etc) and for photo editing. They want this laptop to be lightweight so its easily portable.

HP Envy x360 vs Lenovo Flex 5 14

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 11:48 AM PST

I have to choose from these 2 options. The specs are as below:

    HP Envy x360: i7 8850U 16GB DDR4 1TB HHD+128GB SSD Integrated graphics 15.6" 1080P IPS touchscreen 880$

    Lenovo Flex 5 14: i5 8250U 8GB DDR4 256GB SSD GT 940MX 14" 1080P IPS touchscreen 650$

I will be using these laptops for web browsing, light photo editing, word processing and very light gaming. The asthetics, weight and battery life are important for me, I'd prefer them over specs. Also, which one has the better screen?

Note: Please don't suggest other models as I live outside the US and these are probably my best options at the moment.

Laptop SSD question for more Steam Games

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:34 AM PST

I have a Dell Inspiron 1500 Series 7000, 7559 if correct with a 250 GB SSD installed. I want to add more room for more Steam games and I am wondering which is the best option.

Should I upgrade the current SSD which is the thin kind or get a nice 2.5 1TB SSD as additional storage for Steam games.

Also want the games to run decent if possible.

    Thanks

    endless macbook issues

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 08:13 AM PST

So, i'm in a sticky situation with my 2014 macbook. Over the summer, a friend spilled coffee on my open macbook, all over the keyboard. The laptop stopped working after that and despite attempting to dry it out, still would not turn on. The friend offered to take it to get repaired and took it to a local shop. The shop replaced the logic board and battery and it worked for about a week, but then the logic board failed and I had to take it back to them so they could replace it. They had told me the board they ordered must have been faulty, ordered another logic board and battery, and replaced them both. Then, the second logic board failed and i took it back in. The guys at the shop profusely apologized for what they had put me through, express shipped a new logic board and battery from a different manufacturer, tested it several times, and replaced it as fast as possible, assuring me this one would work. This was in September, and I finally got the laptop back around September 25. Yesterday, i opened up my laptop to find that it wouldnt turn on. I plugged in the charger, and the laptop finally powered on, but the date and time reset to December 31, 2017, and the battery showed an alert icon saying "replace now". I'm worried that Apple won't replace my battery because it's been touched by a third party repair shop, and that the repair shop won't do anything because it's been over 90 days, which is their time frame for any fixes on repairs they've done. What do i do?

Is the Acer Chromebook worth it?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 07:14 AM PST

I'm a college bound student [18F] and I'm looking for anything under $500. The Acer Chromebook has good reviews but it can't play the Sims unfortunately. Is there any other laptops similar to the Acer that can run Windows?

Lenovo Thinkpad 11e (5th Gen) Review: Good Business Laptop/Child’s First Computer

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:30 PM PST

    Tested Configuration: N4100 Processor, 8 GB DDR4-2400 RAM, 256 GB (M.2 2242) PCIe NVMe SSD, Intel UHD Graphics 600, 11.6" (295mm) 720p (16:9) non-touch display, Windows 10 OS, integrated webcam w/mic, no disk drive, (2) Type-A 3.0 USB, (1) Type-C 3.0 USB, HDMI port, Ethernet port, headphone/microphone jack, microSD port

    Benchmark Test: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/13332094

    Overview:

    • Performance: Windows 10 runs well, applications open quickly and boot times are short. Internet browsing and Microsoft Office perform well, without slow downs. Some lower end games also perform well.
    • Portability: It's a small notebook, with a maximum width of 11.8" (300 mm). But at 3 lb, it's heavier than most other 11.6" screen notebooks. This is likely the result of the extra material needed to make it better able to survive a drop.
    • Durability: The notebook is advertised as being able to survive a 3 ft drop and I believe it, it looks like something that could be dropped from a window and escape with minimal damage. The screen bezel is thick and surrounded by hard rubber. The case is made from a mixture of polycarbonate and ABS plastic.
    • Aesthetics: Not necessarily an ugly laptop but you will have to use a vinyl skin if you're not a fan of matte black.

    Internal Hardware:

    • Processor: Several options are available (including i5-7Y54) but the Gemini Lake N4100 and N5000 seem to be the most common. These processors only use 6 Watts and are cooled passively. This means there are no fans or vents. The bottom of the laptop can get very warm after extended gaming but I didn't have any problems with overheating. Performance is acceptable on the N4100 but the price difference between the better N5000 is minimal. Avoid buying any notebooks with pre-Gemini Lake N-series processors, performance on those is significantly worse.See performance comparison here. https://www.reddit.com/r/intel/comments/a8r9am/are_atombased_processors_still_that_PUbad/
    • GPU: The 11e uses integrated graphics so don't expect it to be able to run new AAA games. The following tested games can be played at medium-high settings: Anno 1701, Half-Life 2, Jedi Academy, Sid Meier's Pirates, Titan Quest and Torchlight II.
    • Storage: Either eMMC or SSD. The SSD has a PCIe interface in M.2 2242 form factor and a NVMe controller. At the time of this review, the M.2 2242 form factor with a PCIe interface is nearly impossible to find. The ubiquitous M.2 2280 form factor is incompatible with the 5th gen 11e. Due to this fact, be cautious when choosing the smaller 128 GB SSD.
    • RAM: 4 GB or 8 GB 2400 MHz DDR4. It's soldered in, so be cautious when choosing the lower size because it can't later be increased. Price difference between 4 GB and 8 GB is small.
    • Battery: Has an advertised 13.9 hour life. When you turn all the battery saving settings off, the battery life seems to be around 6-7 hours. The bottom cover must be removed to access the battery. The battery is replaceable but isn't in a common form factor.

    Interfaces/Output:

    • Display: Looks pretty good despite being only 720p, this may be because the screen is small at only 11.6". The lower resolution likely results in better battery life. Colors are vibrant. Screen brightness goes very low for when using in the dark while laying in bed and the 250 nit screen, can become very bright for when it is being used in natural light. No reflections were observed on the matte display. View angle is merely "good enough".
    • Keyboard: Good quality, pressed keys have a satisfactory feel. Some minor strange design decisions. The Fn and Ctrl buttons are swapped from their normal locations, but Lenovo gives you the option of swapping this with provided software. The PgUp and PgDn buttons are also in an inconvenient location, making them easy to hit when using the arrow keys. Keyboard is advertised as spill resistant, but I have not tested this.
    • Touchpad: Responsive, no complaints.
    • Web Cam: Advertised as 720p but produces a grainy, non-sharp picture. The quality is reminiscent of cheap Chinese Raspberry Pi cameras and is probably much worse than what you currently have on your phone. A cover is not built in for the camera unlike on some higher-end Thinkpads.
    • Speaker: Sound quality is acceptable but not great. Max volume level is sufficient. I generally prefer to use a pair of cheap $10 Panasonic RP-HJE120-K earbuds when listening to music.
    • Docking Station: The laptop is not compatible with any docking station.
    • Ports: You don't get a lot of USB ports (Two-Type A 3.0 USB, One Type-C 3.0 USB). An example of when you might run out of Type-A ports is if you're using a wireless mouse, a memory stick and charging your phone. The number of USB ports is sufficient for me, worst case if I need to use three at a time then I could buy a Type-C adapter. The Ethernet port looks to be keeping the laptop from being thinner.

Summary: The 5th gen Thinkpad 11e makes a good business laptop or first laptop for a child. It's portable (11.6", 3 lb), drop resistant and has a good battery life. It's able to play some low-end games (ex: Torchlight II, Half-Life 2) at medium-high settings. There has been a significant improvement in Atom-based processors since 2016, so avoid any pre-Gemini Lake.

Do not pay full price ($700), the 5th Gen 11e routinely goes on sale for between $400-$500. They can sometimes be found even cheaper on Amazon. Refurbished units go for under $250 on the Lenovo Outlet. There will likely be a price cut after Lenovo announces the next generation at CES 2019 in January. The sub $300 range is when this laptop is a steal.

    Convert laptop in a desktop

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 03:34 PM PST

Hi everyone! I recently replaced my Samsung ativ book 8 motherboard, since it had an issue with the discrete graphics card (whenever activated, it would immediately freeze the pc and, besides that, the faulty chip was generating more heat than usual). Beside the gpu problem, the motherboard itself works pretty good. Since it is totally stripped down of case, heatsink and fans, I'm looking for a way to adapt desktop cpu heatsink and fan (I have plenty of them) to overcome the overheating problem, and then build a case to fully convert it to a desktop. The problem I have is about the holes for the heatsink on the motherboard, which are strangely placed. Does anyone have advices for this issue? Thanks.

More money or less money on a Laptop for VR

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 02:40 AM PST

I travel. Allot. I also get bored. So I want to fly Internet spaceships using a HTC Vive wherever I go. (Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous)

I was dead set on a $5000 AUD, ASUS ROG 703GI (8RG). However someone said that's excessive and I should consider a $3700 AUD MSI G73 (8RF) as that will definitely do the job.

I get that the higher the specs the better it'll do, but I also like money.

Is it worth the extra coin? Will I notice a difference between the two?

Lenovo taking a month to ship replacement, what to do?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 05:16 PM PST

On November 13th, I bought the ThinkPad X1 Yoga. It shipped within 1 business days and delivered in 3 days.

On December 3rd, I requested a replacement because it was crashing daily anywhere from one to five times a day. Lenovo lets you keep the original unit until the replacement comes. Took two business days for a case manager to process and shipped on December 8th. It got stuck in Louisville KY for 13 days and eventually got returned to sender because of a missing invoice. Lenovo did not bother to upload the invoice on time.

On December 21st the return to sender was successful. However they still have not reshipped the laptop to me. December 31st and January 1st, Lenovo is not working those days.

It's taking almost a month for Lenovo to ship out a replacement laptop and I still don't have the replacement. What would you guys do if you were in my situation?

Option 1: wait for the replacement, despite how many days it might take. The laptop does not crash anymore after updating thermal drivers. But the battery life is short at only 5 hours and I believe it's defective.

Option 2: return the laptop, spend around $400 more for a Surface Book 2 or XPS 15 2-in-1. Quite tricky finding an alternative 2-in-1 laptop that's not made by Lenovo.

Option 3: forget the replacement, do an on-site repair on the defective battery instead.

If I do a fresh install, will I need to buy a new windows key? (Only have experience with non oem windows keys)

    Dell XPS 13/15

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:27 PM PST

Is Dell XPS laptops still worth it in 2019? But, there are lots of reports for issues with the laptop, coilwine, it doesn't sit flush, killer wifi etc. or can anyone recommend me any other laptops that has a close to perfect infinity display, great trackpad like macbook pro and microsoft surfacebook 2?

It's not even on display at most of the bigbox stores around me, almost every other dell model except for the xps. That seems to be signs that the laptop is not worth the trouble, what do you guys think?

Brand new msi gs65 wont boot

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 03:57 PM PST

    Hey guys,

So I got a new msi gs65 stealth on Friday and today I was doing nothing, watching a YouTube video when it freaked out, told me it needed to restart because of a problem, and tried to restart. Unfortunately it can't get past the Aptio setup utility screen.

Ive tried resetting to the optimized defaults, and changing my boot mode to uefi with csm. It briefly worked and booted after one of the times when I reset to the optimized defaults but as soon as I tried to open chrome it crashed again. I plan on calling msi customer service whenever they open back up but for now I just wanted to see if there were any quick fixes or things im missing from you guys since I'd bet every single one of you knows more about my computer than I do.

Thanks in advance for the help!
