Switching from paying rental fees to owning my equipment, will this setup work or be efficient? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 06:24 PM PST Hello all, So I've done a little bit of research but not a whole lot admittedly, i went through the what "should i buy" and "networking for beginners" from the sidebar, and tried looking for but i couldn't find anything that really answered what i was looking for for my home use I expect to have about 6 wired connections(3 PC's, one smart TV, an XBOX 1, and a PS4) I would like to use wifi for phones/tables, which a majority of the time will be about 4 (2 phones, 2 tablets, one of which is a surface, if that matters) but i'd like to make sure if i have friends over for D&D or something everyone will be able to connect, so probably about 10 over WiFi at once. the modem I planned on getting was this (from what i understand i want to stay away from the PUMA chipset) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01A1E6BA2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1JCDPLP2335KA&psc=1 I think this 8 port switch should be enough https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C2H0YFU/ref=crt_ewc_title_dp_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER the router i'm a bit torn on, i was looking through threads from the last month looking for something similar to my situation, and saw this recommended https://www.amazon.com/Netgear-R7800-100NAS-Nighthawk-Ethernet-Compatible/dp/B0192911RA?ref_=Oct_DLandingS_PC_fcf6102e_NA&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1 but $200 for a router seems like a bit much and was thinking about getting this one. https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-AC1200-Dual-Band-Router/dp/B0168G0KZY/ref=sr_1_6?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1548986218&sr=1-6&keywords=router&refinements=p_n_feature_keywords_three_browse-bin%3A8514071011%2Cp_36%3A1253505011 Lastly, would going with a switch + router be a decent option or would it be better to find a wireless router that has enough physical ports to accommodate my needs? From what I understand, if I went with the switch + router i would need to have it connected like so, ISP -> Router -> Switch -> wired devices. and it looks like all the ports on the switch are auto-sensing so i wouldn't need to worry about which port i plugged my router to. Also, for a little more(possibly unnecessary) information my ISP Comcast and i'll be using the tablet mainly for streaming for big brother/other TV shows, one of the PC's for gaming, another probably for setting up a server or something for whatever game me and my friends are playing, but that's further down the road until i learn more about that. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Having a good experience with Google Wifi Posted: 31 Jan 2019 08:58 AM PST The wifi in my house sucked. Can't complain much, I was the one who set it up. Based on the layout, the modem came into the basement. I had a wifi router (Belkin) set up down there right off the modem, so 2 wifi channels (2.4 and 5). Upstairs it worked ok, but only in about 1/3 of the house. No issue - ran an ethernet from the router into the workroom (basement) with another wifi router (archer c5). This covered most of the rest of the house, except the one section not directly over the basement, on the other side of a brick wall. But I had lots of issues with the archer. The attached storage was not finable half the time. The wifi on that router would stop working half the time (switching from 2.4 to 5 would fix... until 5 went down and had to go back to 2.4, which would work fine... rinse / repeat). Wife hated it, having to manually switch networks depending on where she was in the house. Anyways, I also got sick of the issues with the C5. Costco had a sale on Google Wifi, so I grabbed a 4-pack. First thing, I removed all the routers I had set up and replaced with small linksys switches. Then setup the google in the basement, and another one upstairs on top of a bookshelf. Those two saw each other fine. I have an ethernet line going out to the garage, and set up a third pod, wired, out there. Everything works great. Most of the heavy data use in the house is wired (computers, xbox one, and 2 TVs). The only wireless TV is the one the kids use most often for youtube and vudu. No issues, no lag, no drops, nothing. Everything else that uses wireless (wife and my phones, kids tablets, google minis/amazon echos, even ring doorbell) don't do a lot of streaming video - just games or websurfing. Works great! One thing I would point out to anyone going that route though - if you have issues with the pods detecting each other on initial setup using the google wifi app - turn off the cellular on your phone. I couldn't get the second pod nor my google home hub to connect to wifi / each other on setup even with them sitting next to each other, but as soon as I turned off cellular on my phone it worked like a charm (and I can turn the cellular back on with no issues at all). Just thought I would share in case anyone else was thinking of going that route. [link] [comments] |
Port help. Print failure over vpn (USG router) Posted: 31 Jan 2019 06:22 PM PST Hey guys. I have gotten my m vpn working on my phone and work pc and I have been able to access my home network as expected. When I try to print the printer does show up as an available device. Takes about 15 seconds to propagate ...but it shows. I am able to access the IP address directly and print from inside the web page. However, whenever I click print i get an error on the print spooler app. I think its timing out but there is no diagnostic info. I am not sure how to check the logs to see if the router is blocking traffic. Im thinking maybe I'll just set an allow all rule for vpn traffic but i'm honestly not exactly sure how to do that either (and it be "somewhat" safe) could anyone help me direct traffic here just to see if it's a port issue? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Best under $100 router with QOS? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 05:17 PM PST I work for a small internet provider (under 1000 customers) and we just supply DSL and fiber connections with modems and ONT's that are in bridge mode. Its up to the customer to provide their own router. But it's getting to the point were I am sick of people bitching about speed issues when I know it's from their kids downloading xbox games or other bandwidth intensive activities. That and buffer bloat. I use a USG at home with smart ques turned on which totally fixes any problems caused by internet saturation. But most people don't want to spend $180 plus for a Ubiquiti setup. So what is the best consumer grade under $100 router with QOS I could set up for them that would limit game downloads and let streaming services work at the same time? Most routers I have used have QOS but you have to set up the mac address of the offending devices for it to work properly. I just want a router that is smart enough to know what is what like with my USG. I have heard good things about the Netgear Nighthawks but don't really have any experience since I've used Ubiquiti at home for the past few years. [link] [comments] |
Resolve lan DNS names on Edgerouter X GUI Posted: 31 Jan 2019 05:12 PM PST How do I get local DNS (.lan) hostnames to appear in the ERX UI? (For example, the traffic analysis tab) I am using pihole as both DNS and DHCP server. I followed this article but it didn't make any difference in the UI, even though I can resolve local dns on the CLI fine. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2019 02:40 PM PST My router has been in use for about 7 years an I'm trying to replace it. Any tips? [link] [comments] |
How often to replace cable modem? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 12:54 PM PST Had a Xfinity tech come out, and he mentioned to me its good practice to replace a cable modem every 2-3 yrs. He mentioned since they are on all the time, and with all the fast speeds these days (I have a Netgear CM1000 Docis 3.1, 2 1/2 yrs old), that one should replace the modems every 2-3 yrs. He said Xfinity even is proactive on it, and will swap out modems after 1 year of use. Anyone ever hear this before? New to me.... [link] [comments] |
Questions about Fios gigabit... Posted: 31 Jan 2019 02:20 PM PST I currently have Fios 25/25 and it is constantly a problem. I recently added a Netgear Nighthawk X4S AC2600 router which made our coverage in the house significantly better, but we still have issues with Internet connectivity at times. I was talking to Verizon and could get 150/150 or go to gigabit for $10/month more. There are 5 of us in the house, my wife, my 3 boys and I. At any point, we could all be using some sort of screen. During our peak usage, we would have 1 kid playing Fortnite, 2 playing Roblox, me working from home and my wife streaming Netflix. The kids are often streaming Netflix or Youtube instead. We're often using PS4 and Switch as well which doesn't need too much bandwidth (not playing online much), but periodically have to download updates. We've also got 3 (soon 4) iPhones, an iPad and a couple of Kindles that get used. Questions:
Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
Any streaming box support DFS channel? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 02:11 PM PST I am trying to use DFS channels and upgrade my streaming box. My current Roku doesn't support DFS channels. I am wondering if anyone has a tested version of any streaming box that will work on WIFI DFS channels. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2019 06:55 PM PST Pretty much at my wits end. I have gigabit internet at home and speed tests are usually 700-800 up and down on avg, testing with multiple cables and ports on the switch my desktop only gets around 200Mbps. It used to get the correct speed, but after switching all the cables from the ONT>Router>Switch to CAT6, only now my desktop seems limited to around 200Mbps, while every other device seems fine. Please help me. I've updated the LAN drivers, reset the IP stack thing, but to no avail. [link] [comments] |
Troubleshooting Power Issues on OnQ structured wiring system Posted: 31 Jan 2019 06:46 PM PST I bought a house with a working OnQ system that consists of a single source audio distributed to 4 speakers I think. There is also a house-wide intercom including doorbell to all 4 speaker locations. It was all working until about a week ago when my audio input (single source, flush mount) no longer seems to have power. I removed the wall plate and re-plugged the CAT5 cable in the back of the single source input and got a brief power light which went out after a little bit. I have tested the power supplies to the distribution and interrupt modules and the power supplies seem to be putting out correct voltage. Any idea what would cause these modules to show a power LED then power off? I might be able to provide more info if it would help. I've tried unplugging and replugging all different combinations of cables with no help. Links to the products in my closet Single Source input (Also powers on briefly but turns off) [link] [comments] |
moving to new home, will need new equipment Posted: 31 Jan 2019 07:28 AM PST The family (two adults, three children) is moving to a new home later this week. We had been staying with relatives previously. We have no home networking equipment, but we do or will have smart devices needing WiFi connections (smart TV, phones, tablets, Sonos, ring doorbells, etc). Our ISP will be Xfinity. We have a compatible Netgear Docsis 3.1 modem. New house has three levels, and about 4000 square feet throughout. What are our best options? Doing a mesh router? (Best Buy recommending Linksys Velop.) Hard-wiring the mesh (not sure if we will have this immediate option)? Doing a standard router with access points? [link] [comments] |

Internet ping shooting up around 8pm - How can I monitor this? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 01:56 PM PST Hi, I am playing games that are heavily ping dependant. During the day (8am-8pm) it sits around 50-75ms, then normally around 8 pm onwards til about 11 pm the ping goes up to anywhere between 150-400ms during that time. Since I live in the middle of nowhere, the internet is wireless. It uses a dish on the side of my house, which gets its signal from a mast that is ~5 miles away. The download(20mb) and upload(3ish) speeds are fine all day, but the ping, as mentioned above, shoots up. I am using an ethernet cable to my router. I want to monitor the usage during these times to see what devices are making it lag so much. What can I use to do this? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Hardening my network and servers Posted: 31 Jan 2019 12:45 PM PST I am purely a hobbyist who is looking to harden my network after several side projects have led to some quick and uninformed decisions. I have been running a media server (and supporting apps) on an old desktop running Ubuntu. Each app is run in a Docker container exposed via non-default port. I have NGINX running on this same machine as a proxy for inbound requests from [my domain]/app. My router (AsusWRT-Merlin) is forwarding 443 to this machine. This machine also handles my DDNS. I recently began hardening my network and identified an issue - my web server is on the same machine as all of my apps I am looking to secure. I purchased a Raspberry Pi 3 for the purpose of running NGINX on the Pi and removing NGINX from my media server. I will forward 443 to the Pi and configure NGINX to communicate with the media server. The Pi will handle DDNS and SSL certs as well. All access will be via SSH. I don't believe I have the ability to create a true DMZ or VLANs with my router. I'm hoping this will create a pseudo-DMZ. I'm hesitant to flash to a different firmware like DD-WRT as I have a lot of settings in Merlin set as I'd like them. Plus, I accidentally bricked an old router trying it once before. :) Some questions -
Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Netgear Powerline 1000 - Slow speed Posted: 31 Jan 2019 12:06 PM PST So I bought a set of Netgear Powerline adapters from Target a couple months ago. In all the specs online and in the manual, it is mentioned that they are capable of up to 1000Mbs. According to the 'Pick A Plug' LED, I should be getting at least 80Mbps. However, I am lucky of I can get 10Mbps through the adapters. Is there anything I am doing wrong or anything I can do to boost performance? *The house was built at the end of 2017 so the wiring should be good. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:43 AM PST Does anyone have experience with the Circle? I'm curious as it seems like a good solution for us, but I'm just suspicious about devices like this. Does it "phone home" with browsing and/or usage data to Disney/Circle? Does it share anything outside the home network? Edit:. Didn't realize this worked on ARP spoofing. [link] [comments] |
WiFi router for multiple devices at the same time? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:41 AM PST Hi for the past few years my household has relied on the Apple AirPort Extreme as a router it worked great at first but I feel lately (the past few months) it has gotten worse. With at times up to two people steaming and two others gaming online I was looking for a router that would be reliable in this situation. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Century Link hardwired fiber speeds show slow downloads and fast uploads. Advice needed! Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:15 AM PST Hi all, I just got CenturyLink Fiber installed in my home, and I noticed that my hardwired download speeds hang at around 400mbps, whereas my upload speeds are in the 900s, very similar to this post. A bit of context: I'm using my own VLAN compatible router (TP-Link AC2300). However, this pattern of download/upload speed is the same even when using the CenturyLink-provided equipment. I'm using a Mac running Mojave. A tech told me that this has to do with my computer's antivirus software essentially throttling down the incoming (download) packets, but not the upload packets. However, using this same router and computer, I was easily able to download/upload the full gig with my previous ISP that offered fiber. Also, I'm not using any antivirus software, unless OSX is running things behind the scenes. Is there a fundamental incompatibility with OSX? What is contributing to the slower downloads? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Checking my work/plan before I put it into action. Posted: 31 Jan 2019 10:16 AM PST Simply put, after a very small frustration today (broken 10 foot usb cable, just got it less than a week ago) and needing to order a new one from Amazon, I am deciding to kill 2 birds with one stone. My plan? I have a R8000 Netgear AC3200 Triband router. Works good, love it, however the wireless at the other end of the house is hell. So since I need to order something from Amazon anyway, I figure, why not get a 100ft Cat5e cable, run it through the attic to the other end of the house, and set up some sort of access point or bridge. It doesn't need to be a powerhouse since I have about 100 down, 10 up connection, so I am looking at picking up an Asus Wireless N300 for $30 to use, since its 300mbps speed is still nearly 3x what I need, then planning to put it in AP or Bridge mode. Thats where the hiccup comes in, I am rather tech and networking savvy, and can figure out the setup part, but am unsure of this Asus N300 and if it will accomplish the job. I don't want/need a POE AP option, but ideally if there is a way to have it set as the same as my 2.4ghz ssid so wifi devices roaming through the house will have uninterrupted coverage thats ideal and I believe thats what setting it up as an AP will accomplish where Bridging is more like a repeater situation. Someone want to sanity check my work and the hardware? I am trying to stay at about $50 before tax ($10 for the ethernet, $10 for the USB, $30 for the router/AP/Etc) Would highly appreciate it since I plan to order it all this evening! Edit: Bolded some stuff to make it a bit faster for someone to skim. [link] [comments] |

5ghz WiFi keeps dropping with slow speeds but 2.4ghz gets faster speeds and is stable? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 05:49 AM PST Not only is this issue odd, but this has never happened to me. Nothing has changed in terms of relocating the router/modem, or adding new devices or any of that. I live in NYC and my ISP is optimum/altice if that helps. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2019 08:43 AM PST Apologies in advance if this has been answered somewhere, but I'm getting desperate. Just moved into a new apartment approximately 2000 sqft. The modem and router are located in the ceiling in the bathroom on the other side of the house. The area where i work is essentially an internet deadzone. I had the guys from cox come out and they showed that when plugging into the router and the modem they were getting 100-130mbps which is what I'm paying for, but I'm not getting any internet at all where I'm at...they mentioned needing to get a new router. I have no idea what to purchase thinking about getting google's internet mesh, but I don't really know what I'm talking about so hoping to solicit some thoughts or opinions beforehand For context, the router is Linksys EA6350 and the modem is an Arris Touchstone CM8200. Also, I heard a crash in the bathroom while the Cox guy was fixing things so I'm thinking he might have dropped the router/modem. THanks in advance for your help [link] [comments] |
keep hearing about Ubiquiti, is it necessary for my setup? Posted: 31 Jan 2019 08:30 AM PST My setup will be a Netgear R6700 router with Netgear C600 modem with a 300/20 plan and in a 1800sq ft 3bd room home. the modem and router will be in the room about the middle of the house. is this something necessary or is everyone using them for their business or bigger homes? Currently using my ISP modem/router combo and will be ditching that soon for my own gear. My home isn't equipped with Ethernet so i'm running one to each room from the room where the router will be. we have 2 POE security cameras, 2 wifi cameras, 2 iPhones, 2 Macbooks, an iPad, a fire stick and two Roku's. Of course not all iPhones/iPad/Macbooks are connected at the same time. when i run my Ethernet - the Roku Ultra in the main room will be connected to the Ethernet so one less device. that main room will also have a switch so i can connect my XBOX and maybe any other device i need. We're cutting the cord today i think so both Roku's will be running YouTube TV so more streaming than before. although again, one will be on ethernet. thanks. [link] [comments] |
