Posted: 03 Jan 2019 04:07 PM PST So the dilemma is how much do I need/is there a point to future proofing. At the moment there is really only one hard line with the rest over WiFi, 3-4 laptops, a few phones, tablets, some smart home shenanigans. I've always shopped for specs but I am quickly realising that my needs might be out of sorts with my old process. I've been looking at the ac1900 routers, and well as the Orbi mesh systems. The x6s is also tempting. Do you guys have any options that I may have overlooked? Cheers [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jan 2019 08:20 AM PST Hi, all, I am far from a "prosumer" and pretty green to Home Networking but I do want a home network that is going to be scalable to technology advancements. This is our longterm home (20+ years) so I want to do things right without having to shell out money every 3 years or so. I was toying with the idea of Orbi RBK50 but it seems like people are geared more toward setting up Access Points. I usually side with the pros on this one. I don't think I have the personal skills to do the wiring myself. So I will probably have to resort to hiring someone to do the installs - unfortunately. So if I am going to be paying someone - I want to make sure that I have the correct equipment: which APs, how many, and where. Here is the layout of my home: https://i.imgur.com/QtGRxTK.png I currently have your basic set up in my living room - on the "upper floor" of a split level ranch. The ISP comes into the living in the corner. I have my modem, router, and home automation hubs all there. There is also a splitter outside that can run the ISP into the "basement." If I went this route, then it might make sense to repurpose the laundry room utility closet to house the network. The room usually stays around 64 degrees Fahrenheit. The one issue would be getting the coaxial there. I know I need a gateway, switch, and cloud key. I imagine I will also be running Cat-7 to the APs so to become as futureproof as possible. I just don't know what APs I would need, how many, and the locations. Again, if I am going to have these professionally installed, I probably won't have the luxury of trial and error. Anyone want to toss their input as to what rooms and what products? I obviously want the whole house covered, as well as the garage, and as much of the 200 foot by 200 foot yard as possible. Would wall units make sense? When do wall units make sense over the ceiling APs? Is there a disadbantage to having the APs on the walls opposed to ceiling? Would I be able to run off an AP (I think secondary?) to a wall jack that I can connect a split to in order to run Roku, Hubs, etc? [link] [comments] |
Best Mesh Router System for a 400Mbps Internet connection. Looking Netgear Orbi Mesh or ASUS AIMesh Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:24 PM PST So I had a client call today about Home Mesh network. I have done Enterprise Mesh. I actually have for myself and some other home stystems where we are talking APs are hardwired. My House is using 2 Asus RT-Ac68U's one in Router mode and second is in Wired AP mode Running Merlin ofor a 100Mbps internet. So while I have access to Asuses AIMesh I have not played with it. He was looking at the Netgear Orbi 3000 setup. I am not a fan of Netgear and it looks like the Orbi is no frills, Only 3 Lan ports a USB 2.0 that you can not hook a disk to and not that much features. Since I am an ASUS fan I would like to push him to Asus. They compared the Orbi 3000 to the RT-AC3200 on Slant.co which I prefer over Quora. They like the RT-Ac3200. The only thing is that it does not do AI mesh. I am wondering what would be a max throughput for the 400Mbps ASUS Setup using AIMESH routers. Also knowing that tings like phones or tablets and Laptops might be 1x1 MIMO or 2x2 MIMO and not get a wireless connection fast as 400Mbps. I was wondering if way to go is the RT-AC3100 for both the Router and AP or The RT-AC5300 as the Router an which should I use for AP another RT-AC5300 or a RT-AC3100? Or should I go ORBI like he wanted? I have not read enough but it mentions in specs that the ORBI uses a 4x4 Dedicated Backhaul and if that makes a difference given the Mesh communicates through its own WIFI channels which I am assuming that is what that means? Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Looking for guides for Wi-Fi extension via antenna Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:15 PM PST I am looking for a guide to extend my Wi-Fi range across the road to my grandparents. Home Network with Many IoT Devices, Trouble with WiFi. Fixable, or a Router Upgrade? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:37 PM PST I'm a prosumer user (CompTIA Network+ and several years of being a "network troubleshooter" at work), and I've just recently started having a lot of trouble with the Netgear R8000 (AC3200). Looking to upgrade to something a bit more robust if it will solve the problems, but I have no idea what I should get. I installed 8 new TPLink Kasa smart switches and another 3 echo dots in my home in late November, and since then I'm having trouble keeping everything online. The biggest issue is a Logitech Circle cam that we use as a baby monitor. I've relegated it to the guest 5G network, and it's still having trouble connecting when I turn it on without me rebooting the router a few times most days. All of the other smart switches/echos are on the 2.4 home network. My regular wifi clients are: Home 2.4 Ghz network
Guest 5Ghz network
Additionally, I have a desktop PC and a file/Plex server that are hard-wired to the router. Any suggestions are welcome, we're getting tired of constantly having to reboot the router. [link] [comments] |
Mesh, Router or Router + Extender? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 02:14 PM PST Hi all, I currently have a bog standard router that doesn't cover my home very well and also doesn't cope with the load from the people using it. We live in a 3 bedroom semi detacthed house in the UK, my Internet speed is currently 64Mbps down and 20Mbps up. According to the router I have 27 devices connected, a various mix of devices, here are some of them.
We tried Google Wifi and I liked it as it seemed stable unlike when I previoulsy had a Netgear Orbi which had loads of firmware issues at that time. Here comes my two main problems with it though, devices like my Samsung S8 and Nintendo Switch consoles were sticking to the 2.4Ghz and even worse, not roaming to the better connection when moving around in the house. I realise that this is to do with the devices themselves and not the google wifi, however I was worse off with the mesh as these devices were not moving on their own, I could force a move by restarting the wifi on those devices but that isn't really the point of having a mesh. The second reason I didn't keep the Google Wifi was that it has no form of QOS and I have many bandwidth hungry devices in my house, the Xbox being one of the worst in regards to completely saturating my internet when it is downloading a patch or update, so much so that everything just buffers and even web browsing is almost unusable. Here is my wishlist; QOS (Either Bufferbloat protection or some form of QOS to stop the bandwidth hogs) Parental Controls (Pause the internet on devices and some form of content filtering, adult sites and such) Full house converage, can be triband but doesn't have to be as long as it can cope with demand and get me 67Mbps. Here are my current ideas;
Having the three mesh nodes of the Google Wifi was nice as it enabled me to have a strong connection downstairs and in my troubled upstairs locations, its just the fact that my internet could get so easily saturated and my devices weren't smart enough to make use of the mesh. Also I know that you can use Asus AIMesh but that doesn't work with Merlins firmware and I haven't heard great things about how well it works. Thanks for reading if you made it all the way down here! Apartment community network for Irrigation Posted: 03 Jan 2019 08:33 PM PST Any thought on how to set up wireless for multiple irrigation controllers in an apartment complex that covers about 2 acres. Upgraded to gigabit internet, time to replace MX64 Posted: 03 Jan 2019 09:44 AM PST Heyall. Right now I am running a full Meraki network. One MX64 at home as my gateway (site-to-site vpn to my second MX64 at work), two MS220-8p at home and my two MR33 (and one at work). The MX64 is limited at 250mbps so that wont cut it at home anymore but I'd still like to keep it on the network for my site to site VPN. I'll worry about replacing everything then the license runs out next year, right now I am just trying to find a gateway to replace my home MX64 while keeping it and everything else on the network. If possible, I'd like to change as little as possible (if i can keep DHCP on the MX64 that's a plus). Forgive my crude draw.io drawing but this is what it is like today https://imgur.com/a/YYEwiaK so if i could move MX64-1 to the side as a VPN Concentrator and DHCP host, i'd just have to plug the rack switch into the new router whichever I end up going with. TLDR: Thoughts on a simple (i.e. no need for wifi) gigabit internet speed router? [link] [comments] |
Found this router, but not sure if it is good for my needs? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 07:19 PM PST i have a netgear r6200v2 that has slow upload speeds on the 5ghz network (i pay for 300/30 on cox) I get 280 down and 5 up. Directly to the modem i do get the speeds I pay for. I do have good modem signals with no packet loss. Anyways, I found this TP-Link Router & I want to know if anyone had a good experience with this? We only have 5 devices connected and out of the 5 there is only one device that streams netflix (roku), we also backup photos from time to time and because there's no school, my son is normally on his playstation [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jan 2019 10:33 AM PST Anyone running a 100'+ ethernet from their cable modem WAN to first router? What models do this reliably? My current Docsis3.0 doesn't seem to have ethernet power for the router to pick-up the internet feed 100' away and I'm hoping a quick upgrade will solve my new wiring. I've read basically any modem can do this, but mine does not. [link] [comments] |
Can't access modem control panel Posted: 03 Jan 2019 07:00 PM PST I just got an Arris SB8200 and I had it activated with comcast. Internet is working fine, but when I try to get to status page at http://192.168.100.1 I get a connection time out error. I can ping it, and when i tracert it I only show my router(TPlink Archer C50) in the way. Interesting thing is that my router shows the default gateway as a public Comcast IP and not my modem IP. I tried changing this manually to 192.168.100.1 and my internet stopped working. Not sure if i'm doing something wrong. I also tried using google DNS without any luck. I've also factory reset both devices. I can access it when plugged in directly to the modem and bypassing the router though. [link] [comments] |
[Advice] Home networking setup for a rental house next year Posted: 03 Jan 2019 06:39 PM PST I'm currently in college and next year, some friends and I will be living in a house next year in ann arbor. We'll have comcast internet. There's going to be 5 people living in the house. I'm wondering what would be the recommended modem, router, and access point for this situation. If I had to guess, our internet plan would probably be 250Mbps down and 10Mbps up. I've been looking at the Arris surfboard SB6190 and Asus AC2900. However, I see it's generally recommended to have a different router and access point? Just looking for general advice, product recommendations, and anything helpful. Thank you guys and sorry if i left any information out [link] [comments] |

[advice] Asus RT-AC55U Traffic Manager QoS not working properly? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 06:15 PM PST On Traditional QoS page I set up limits using MAC adress of an Ipad, set it to lowest priority. Also lowest priority devices are set to max 2 mbps. On most tests and pages it works fine , device can't exceed 2mbps. But on these two speed tests, somehow device can reach to max possible speed of my internet connection. http://openspeedtest.com/ https://fast.com/ I'm trying to figure out how does the device bypass the limits set by the router. What can the possible explanation and solution may be? [link] [comments] |
Bad hitdetection in games any ideas why? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 09:24 AM PST Tl;dr: I experience terrible hit detection and latency with a low and stable ping how is that possible, what could be the reason and how do I fix it? Long version: Hey for quite some time now I had this weird lateny I simply cannot explain, this has been bothering me daily and I've not been able to explain it to my ISP or fix it in any way. When ever I play online on PC or Console I get this annoying delay. It is not input lag thats for sure since by now I am almost alergic to any sort of delay. The best way I could describe it is like playing on a 200ms ping but having 20ms shown. No stutters or rubberbanding just a big server delays that feels like half a second. For example two games that almost the same yet completely different when it comes to lag. On newer Call of Duties like the Black Ops series I've never been above a 1.0 k/d its simply impossible people kill me the moment I see them thus never been able to get a 11 player killstreak. Yet older games like Modern Warfare 2 have no such issues I can casually get a 25 killstreak with every weapon and have at least a second to react on enemies instead of dying instantly. When I play shooters moving targets are almost unhitable its as if their hitbox becomes thinner than the model as soon as they start walking even with weapon spread I still get no hit markers. But its not just bad hit detecion when enemies walk around the corner its like they see me way earlier almost half a second. Its like I'm dying to aimbot but when I watch the killcam they have just a normal reaction time. But it gets funny when playing against the top 1% because I see shots without an enemy model since they are not spawned yet or are not completely around the corner. I became tired of this and switched over to PC in hope of getting more insight and fixing this problem but I had my hopes too high and still have the same laggy experience. Overwatch Deathmatch for example I can get killed in blackscreen from respawning but others are still glowing blue from spawning take no damage but are already able to shoot me. I looked this up and only found console players with the same issue, almost like I am the only players on PC walking with a black screen against walls after spawning. What makes this even more mysterious is hit detection and latency only becomes bad after restart without my ping changing at all so restarting my router only helps for a minute or two. I can be perfectly hitting shots at the start but suddenly miss everything in the same match for the rest of game. It makes me want to punch my monitor, close the game and cry on my keyboard lol. Any ideas what could be the reason and how I can fix it? Here is my setup: Gtx 1050TI , Msi gaming pro carbon, 16GB gskill 3200 CL16 ram, i5 8600k, 500W PSU, 960 evo m.2 ssd and a BenQ XL2430T monitor connected via displayport... thats what I remember at the top of my head. Router: Fritzbox 6490 cable, pc connected with a new Cat6 ethernet cable, 100mbs download / 6mbps upload, ping 13ms but in game (Overwatch) a consistent latency of 40ms. With stable 200fps but capped at 144. Blizzard Support wants me to run WinMTR but when I do it shows no information at the first hop (the router is from my isp and doesn't give details). Programms like Haste and wtfast however show a packetloss of 20-30% but what confuses me is they are only not recieved on the first hop. For example: Hop 1: fritz.box / sent: 500 / recieved 400 Hop 2: very long ip adress / sent: 500 / recieved: 500 and so on... When I try to ping on cmd it shows no packet loss only when choosing a bigger packet size I'm guessing ddos protection? My ISP sent me a new coaxial cable but that didn't help and I've tried almost everything like portforwarding, using better dns, messing with network adapter settings, downloading programs like tcp optimizer, tuning regedit for gaming, reinstalling windows 10 and updating drivers. I believe the only thing I haven't changed yet is my router itself but it doesn't seem defect to me. I would be thankful for any kind of help since my motivation to even turn on my pc reached zero. Posted: 03 Jan 2019 10:21 AM PST I'm going to be living in an AirBnB for four months while I do a work term. It's in a newish townhouse in Toronto. Thing is, I like to play games on my PC and I've had horrible luck doing this over shared WiFi in the past because whenever someone starts seeding torrents or something, my ping shoots way up to unplayable amounts. I lived out of AirBnBs for a few months a few years ago and couldn't game the entire time for this reason (a surprising number of people unknowingly seed torrents 24/7). I don't care about download speed so much as the quality of connection, hence considering a Powerline. I actually haven't heard of this technology before until yesterday. Anyway, I know that it has to be on the same circuit or else the quality degrades but if it's not on the same circuit and the router is in a different room on a different floor, what will the connection be like? Again, reliability > download speed for me. In the worst case scenario, is it still better for gaming than WiFi? Also I plan to ask the owners before doing this because not asking would be a dick move. Cheers. [link] [comments] |

Are sim card routers fast enough for gaming? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:54 PM PST I will be going overseas for 5+ weeks and the place Im staying has no internet, so I'm forced to look for rental wifis or data sim cards, and wondering if getting a sim card router would be fast enough for gaming. Cutting the Cord and giving up Xfiniti equipment. But would like a vpn SERVER on the router Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:47 PM PST I am seeking some advice. As the title says I am cutting the comcast cable cord but maintaining their internet (business class). So I am giving up the Xfinity modem/router and need to replace them. I've pretty much decided on the Arris surfboard docsis 3.1 modem but will also need a new wifi router to connect to the modem. Coverage is not a big deal, I have two older linksys routers running dd-wrt that function as access points. (I suppose I could retire them, they don't have 5 gig bands, but they work fine for most things) But.... I would really like the new router to have a built in VPN SERVER (not passthrough). I'm having a hard time simply finding that information. Good firmware is always a plus but other than that I'm open. Can anybody recommend a moderately priced wifi router that includes a good VPN server? Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Jan 2019 05:13 PM PST Here's the stuff they installed as well as the kind of wall port that's all over the house. I've tested that Ethernet port with my PC's motherboard Ethernet, as well as my laptop's Ethernet. I also tested some other ports downstairs with the laptop. Neither of those things work. In the basement I can see what appears to be a switch, with labeled cables coming out, into a white box, and into the ceiling but frankly past that I have no idea what's up. I'd appreciate any assistance, thanks [link] [comments] |
Need help with wireless extension throughout the house. Posted: 03 Jan 2019 11:08 AM PST My ISP only offered 100mbps connection for the longest time, so I was forced to pay for 2 separate connections (upstairs and downstairs) in my house. Recently, they now offer a 300-400mbps connection which is quite a bit cheaper than paying for 2 separate connections. I decided to do that but realized that the connection is spotty traveling to the upstairs of my house. We also decided to ditch cable tv and rely on amazon fire / roku for netflix and streaming service through our cable company. So we will have about 2-3 rooms streaming tv at any given time (some upstairs, some downstairs). What is the best way to utilize our internet connection to the fullest and extend the 5ghz signal into the upstairs of my house? We will have several heavy loaded connections depending on this 300-400mbps internet which I know is not much compared to others. I currently have a Netgear R6230 (ac1200) and our ISP has provided us with a free Sagemcom 5260 which seems to be quite limited and practically useless. I've been trying to do much reading as possible, but it seems some people advise against using the 2nd router as a repeater (if even possible) because it eats up bandwidth. I would like to keep my R6230 if possible but I'm open to spending more money on a different router if it will offer obvious benefit. Also it seems that the wall plug ins for AP extension seem to be the most reliable in terms of putting the signal upstairs, but I'm a bit lost on which hardware would benefit the most. I'm trying my best to keep my budget under 200, as the whole reason why I'm condensing this internet into 1 connection and cancelling my cable is to save money. Thank you. Edit: I'm renting this house, so running Ethernet is probably not going to be feasible for the most part. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jan 2019 01:09 PM PST Hi- so I was on here about two weeks ago and asked about a redo of modem/routers we were recommended by Best Buy. Our home size is 2800sq/ft and the number of devices we would be using is two iMacs, 1 MacBook, 4 iPads, 4 iPhones. The router we had purchased was a NetGear Nighthawk X6S AC4000 Tri-Band WiFi Router and I have till the 12th to return it if need be. The general opinion was that they oversold us with the Nighthawk. One of the recommendations was to get Google Wifi so I'm curious if anyone has any experience with them? We were curious whether we'd actually need the 3 pack or if we could get away with 2 (one main on the downstairs main floor and one upstairs)? I know that the Google Wifis operate at an AC1200 which is way less than the Nighthawk AC4000 but it sounds like essentially the two google pods would in their way be their own router thus kind of splitting our house wifi into multiple households essentially (yes I know they're still technically the same house and wifi that's just my way of explaining it to other people in my house so they get why "downgrading" from an AC4000 to AC1200 would be exactly that). If anyone has any opinions on Google Wifi and if it'd be worth the switch (cost wise it'd save us about $50 which isn't a lot but every dollar counts I guess) I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts. Up and down speeds lower than normal Posted: 03 Jan 2019 12:55 PM PST I using a paired TP-Link adapter set to mimic a wired connection between my PS4 and router. When I first set up this wired connection a few months ago I was getting 5-12 Mbps up and 15-25 Mbps down. My speeds have dropped significantly when I checked recently. Now getting less than 1 Mbps up and only about 3-4 Mbps down. Any ideas as to why this has happened? Is there anything I can do about it or is it just because of a weakened connection? Any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
