Good laptop for IT student thinking about surface pro 6

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    Australia <1500

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1: it's fine either way. good battery is must because I'll be using it to take notes etc for 4-5 hours at a time. Performance should be good but if it comes between battery and performance, battery is more important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'll be using it on train/bus so it can't be too bulky

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Windows as primary but ability to duel boot Linux would be great too but not a must

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13.5 is preferred but 15.5 is fine as well

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No gaming, light photoshop use, no cad/video editing. I don't know which programs I'll be using so thoughts from someone with an IT degree are welcome. I learned that 8gb ram and i5 is appropriate.

    • Gaming

    No

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen

Touch screen is not a must but would be cool. I used a Dell Inspiron and keyboard and touch pad shouldn't be worse than that but no specific requirements like backlit or mechanical keyboard etc

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I like the surface pro 6 but I learned that you can't put it in your lap when attached to keyboard. Not a deal breaker so I'll be willing to work around it if everything else is great. I have mid range computer too so storage/gaming/heavy photo editing etc can be done on that.

I can upgrade HDD to SSD and ram from 4gb to 8gb if it saves money but if it already has both of these things, customizability isn't necessary.

Sorry for writing a paragraph 😁

Please help me choose a computer!

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 12:37 AM PST

Hello, this is my first Reddit post! I've been lurking on this site for years now. I think you guys can help me with this situation!
A little information about myself that might help the process: I'm only a teenager. I need this laptop for school and miscellaneous purposes. I'm not a gamer of any sort. I love huge screens, the current computer I am using to make this post has a moderately big display.
The highest price I am willing to spend: 530 dollars. (Cheap, yes, I know.) Feel free to suggest computers that you believe is good for me! Please and thank you.
The first computer I'm looking at buying is fairly old. It's the HP Pavilion dv7.
My mother has kept her Pavilion on Windows 7 since she first got it, which had to be about 10 years ago. There have been no problems with it at all. The laptop does get incredibly hot at times, which scares me. Overall, I love this computer. If I were to buy this particular model, I would pay no more than 200 dollars for it due to its age.
The second computer is Asus VivoBook 15 F510UA.
I don't know too much about the brand nor model, but I'm trying to find out as much as I can. I like most of the specs. Although, I do wish the screen was bigger. I have heard some amazing things about this laptop. If anyone out there owns this item, let me know about it!
The last computer is Asus X series X751NA.
Just going, to be honest, the size of the screen is the only appealing feature on this thing. Everything else doesn't look too good to me.

17 inch gaming "laptop", Australia, virtually unlimited budget but have weight limitations.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 04:12 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Up to $5kAUD, but it has to earn every dollar over $3500. Australia

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications, Gaming performance

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Has to be under 6kg, including the power brick and the weight of the carry bag for carry on luggage leaving me 1kg for a book etc. I have a targus clamshell type satchel to save weight, but would prefer a backpack if it is really lightweight. (Before the MSI GS60 I used to carry an alienware x51 desktop with a 970 on the plane but I need to bring my screen with me now)

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Win 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17 inch preferred, prefer 1920x1080 but can be 1440, must be g-sync, must be 120Hz or more. Prefer matte screen not glossy. I have a 15.3 now, and would like something a bit bigger but if something meets all of my other needs I will consider a 15.3 again.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming, mostly a variety of open world type games. A few space sims. A bit of pubg occasionally, An embarassing amount of modded java minecraft which needs great single threaded performance and eats ram.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Immersive detailed graphics at high or ultra settings. I currently have a 970M and I want a LOT more.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Ssd for the OS, and an empty SATA drive slot so I can transfer a new 2TB SSD I just bought into the new machine. Solid build quality, I travel a lot. Want good thermals, I am currently using a 2015 MSI GS60 and it roasts and howls because the air intakes suck (heh heh). It also bends in the middle a bit too easily in the backpack so I want a thicker stiffer chassis. 16g of ram. No touch screen. Reasonable keyboard, dont care about looks.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Considering a metabox/clevo Prime-x P775TM-G with a single 1080, but the weight is getting up there. But I am wanting to go bigger than the MSI GS60 I have for better cooling. Trading weight for performance is my dilemma. I definitely don't want to deal with double power bricks, so power supply has to be 330w or less. Happy to wait another 3 or 4 years for the next generation of VR, dont have a HMD yet so VR isnt important.

    Powerful Laptop without GPU

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:28 AM PST

Hello-I am looking for a fast laptop (CPU, SSD, etc) but do not need/do not want to pay for a discrete GPU. Thanks for taking a look!

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA , $3000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Performance & build quality (metal or carbon fiber over plastic)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not a concern.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux, but I will pay for the Windows license if I must.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17in>15in

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No - But I specifically want to avoid discrete gpu for added cost, heat & power drain.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? n/a

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Emphasis on screen quality. Ideally 400nits brightness, 4k resolution, wide viewing angles (IPS, IGZO, etc).

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Preferably a top of the line CPU: the coffee lake Xeons or the laptop i9's.

    Gaming/ general use laptop - (US $800-$1200 - 15.6")

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 03:23 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: United States. $800-$1200.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Build quality and specs are the most important to me.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Pref. 15.6, no smaller.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No video editing, just general web browsing, word processing and gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Civillization VI, World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, Overwatch, Crusader Kings, For Honor, Total War: Warhammer II, Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Being able to enjoy new releases would be nice, as I've seldom been able to. I'd like to run as much as possible with as high settings as possible, preferably at 60fps. I am a bit of a stat/ spec noob, so if this isn't possible I accept that.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality and a solid keyboard.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have been running an Acer V Nitro for 4ish years and it's starting to give out on me. I would like to replace it with something solid and reliable that feels like a definite upgrade.

I would also prefer to buy from Amazon, if possible.

Good laptop for college studying moving out

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 04:14 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

England 1000 pounds or france 1100 euros

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1: A balance between battery and perfomance
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

It's important, but not that much, I'll be taking to to college most likely, so i don't wanna bring a monster to class.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Windows as primary but ability to duel boot Linux would be great too but not a must

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Photoshop. Office. Web browsing mostly.

    • Gaming

Running csgo even at lowest setting and a low resolution would be cool, not crucial though, I'm not a gamer.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen

A good keyboard would be great, since i plan to write a lot on it.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

It has to have an i7, and a SSD. The rest is negotiable. I love the swift 3 but the inspiron 7580 costs the same and has better features just a big bigger. The vivobook pro seems amazing but i've heard horrible things about the battery life. The dell g5 looks good specswise but i the battery isn't good and i hate the gamer design(even if not that flashy)

    Laptop recommendation for a parent

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:14 AM PST

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, if it isn't, please guide.

Need a laptop for my dad. He needs it for accounting mainly, plus a little browsing and things like MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint. Preferably Windows, as that particular accounting software works only on Windows.

Also, portability is an important factor, so smaller than 15" preferably. Budget <40k.

I'd thought of Surface Go (128GB) but it seemed like an overkill.

https://www.amazon.in/dp/B07DJRN17C/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_XcjlCbJK6K38 was another, but it's with Celereon Dual core N3350 processor & I'm afraid it might be too slow or laggy in use. ( but with SSD will it be a significant improvement? ).

United States, $800 for school and gaming

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 10:54 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $800 is the absolute max. Preferably less, but I'll take what I can. In the United States.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specs for the money
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Final Fantasy XIV is my main game. Programs I have to have are Mathematica, MATLAB, and Microsoft Visual Studio.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 60fps in Final Fantasy XIV. Beyond that just whatever games catch my attention.. I have a PlayStation 4 so I don't need a hardcore gaming rig.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good build quality is of the utmost importance to me. Anything else is really icing on the cake.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. It'll spend quite a bit of time in my backpack. I'm not concerned about the weight, I can pack however much I have to around, but I want it to be durable. My current laptop, a Lenovo Y50, is being decommissioned, in part, due to a messed up hinge (though apparently it's a common issue with these guys). I don't want a repeat of that. A combination of a 256GB SSD and a 1TB HDD is ideal. It doesn't have to include both, but I at least want the option of having both.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Couldn't care less

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I plan on trying out Linux, but will go back to Windows if I'm not happy with it.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inches sounds good to me

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Skyrim, Fallout, Borderlands, Far Cry... I like fancy graphics as much as the next guy, but ultimately a game running smoothly is what really matters to me.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality comes first, followed by good keyboard. I will probably never use the touchpad.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Three or more USB ports would be nice

$600-800 Reliable student laptop for last few years of high school

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 01:43 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

Around $600 - 800, though the budget is flexible, and Australia

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I dunno what 'best specifications' mean but I saw most other posts pick it, so sure. I don't really want a 2 in 1 though.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

It's the least of my concerns. Thick and heavy, don't really mind.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A, though I notice that the cheaper and non-touchscreen computers all seem to be around 15'6

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I have a wacom and do digital drawing, currently use firealpaca but am looking into Photoshop. Just the office 365 stuff is all I really need though.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Don't really game, unless you count crossy road every once in a while. Might get overwatch because friends play it, might not.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

No touchscreen, please. I have bad experiences with those. Something sturdy that won't break apart like my last one did, as well as a nice keyboard that I can type quickly with would be nice.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

So I'm going into my last three years on high school, and really really need a good reliable laptop. I'm under a reasonable amount of pressure to maintain my high grades from last year, so something that can keep many, many tabs open in a browser along with a couple word documents and a PowerPoint presentation. Am I being unrealistic? I have zero knowledge of technology, much apologies.

-also, at least an i5 is preferred, and ssd, which I believe is better? There's the inspiron 15 3000 (amd) on sale ($679), but is it any good?

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best specs. Going to be mostly in my room

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Don't care at all

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Not anything too small, but beyond that, don't care.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I just want to be able to run hearthstone and osu. Also possibly games like undertale or emulated Pokémon games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

The games listed previously. Osu would need to be run at high frames.

    College/Gaming laptop, 1100USD

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 01:24 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 6000TRY=~1100USD, Turkey. Can go up a bit higher.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Lighter is better since I will be carrying it around the campus.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some RPG and MOBA games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Witcher 3 at medium-high settings with a playable frame rate.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I need it to last at least 5 years, so some quality build will be nice but I don't have a problem with all plastic laptops. Good keyboard is a bonus but not that important.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm a college student in Turkey and looking for a solid laptop. I will use it for school subjects & gaming. The heaviest game I will play on it will be Witcher 3 at medium to high settings so I think a 1050 or 1050ti will be enough for my needs. I had my eyes on Legion y530 since it has a very elegant design and actually had the chance to test it. But I think there are cheaper options with same specs. I want to learn about alternatives to it and hear you guys' opinions. Thanks in advance!

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? not too terribly important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? nothing at the moment

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

For sure needs to have a SSD for windows and minimum 1tb hd space (for bulkish storage), 16gb minimum ram, ideally Nivida 1070 (can and will setter for a 1060 for the right price provided it's the 6gb verson). Been looking at msi a lot and I have read a lot of great things about them. Also, the wifi has to be ac with at least 2x2 * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -fill here, remove dashes-

Laptop with best graphics for £500-700

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:33 AM PST

edit: forgot to put UK in the title

Would like it to be new and ideally closer to 500 than 700, but if there's a good deal on a better laptop, I don't mind going higher. I play a voxel mmo on my aging Toshiba laptop, and I'm beyond done with the choppy graphics. Current specs are i3-2348M CPU @ 2.30 GHz, 8GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 3000.

As you can see, it's not great. Almost anything would be an improvement. I hate how hot it gets, how loud it is, and the fact that the usb ports are on the same side as the fan.

Aside from that one game, I'll be using it mainly for watching netflix and typing up documents for work. So nothing heavy duty, just looking for the best specs for the money. Windows OS, hard drive size not terribly important, and I have no preference for screen size or battery life. Don't need an optical drive, so thinness is a plus, but can sacrifice thinness for better specs.

Hit me with your suggestions if you have any, thank you, and happy new year!

    No Frills Performance $1000-1500 USD

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 04:07 PM PST

First post on reddit, so hooray me. Thanks in advance for everyone's time.

***Total budget and country of purchase: **\*

    $1000-1500 USD; USA

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.*\*

Do not particularly want 2 in 1, but not a deal breaker if it's included. Specifications and longevity are the two most important factors for me.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\*

Thinness is great but not a real consideration in final purchase; weight doesn't matter much

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.*\*

    Windows or Mac

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\*

    15" or under

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\*

No gaming, just R and SAS for data analysis; sometimes fairly large spreadsheets

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\*

    N/A

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\*

Absolutely do not want a touchscreen. Having a highly functional touchpad is key as I do not use a mouse. Keyboard less important as long as it's functional

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\*

I know it's out of vogue for real tech people but I've used MacBook Pros for years and have loved them. My current laptop is an Acer (albeit a very cheap refurb) and I've hated the bloatware, trackpad, and have had some other significant issues. I'm open to having my mind changed and purchasing another Windows, but I still have a bad taste in my mouth.

I am a phD student in the marine science field and do a significant amount of data analysis involving fairly large spreadsheets (by biology standards) using both R and SAS. I also use the Adobe suite for very light video/photo editing (mainly to prepare videos for use by other programs on desktops in my lab) as well as some basic website design. I do also tend to leave a lot of tabs open in Firefox and often listen to music/podcasts on Youtube, which has significantly impacted my current laptop's ability to perform other tasks simultaneously. I'm not a gamer and certainly not a computer expert so a lot of the discussions I've been reading on here have left me with more questions than I originally had.

Essentially I'm looking for something that will get me through the rest of my program (~5 years) without being replaced and without a significant drop in performance. I don't need a beautiful screen, any kind of fingerprint readers, touchscreens, etc., just high speeds and decent processing power. Build quality is semi-important to me as I will be using it from time to time at conferences and other events where it will be seen (basically I don't want anything too bulky or gamer-y). From what I've read it looks like a business class laptop might be best, but I'm kind of lost on specifics to look for.

Again, thanks to everyone who provides some input.

Laptop for freelancer with matte screen - Aus/EU (Germany, UK) - up to ~900 USD/EUR

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:23 PM PST

    Hi there,

Just stumbled upon this subreddit - super great resource and thanks in advance for any suggestions :)

I work freelance drafting documents and doing research as my main income, based in Berlin but come back for a few months to Australia every year. I've been using a HP Spectre x360 (2014 ed) which has been pretty good, but noticed in particular a) it generates much too much glare when I'm trying to work outside at a cafe or co-work place b) the ultrabook 13" screen is just a little too small to avoid strain and c) the 4gb of ram is not enough and I'm getting performance issues.

I saw a post here from 2017 asking something similar but that was US-focused. I'm currently in Australia until end of Jan, so can pick up any available laptop there, or afterwards any laptop available to be shipped to the EU (e.g. UK or Germany).

On to the form: * Total budget and country of purchase: ~900USD/EUR, from either Australia or EU.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 not important. Best specs most important, and in particular best screen, with enough ram to process the many tabs / docs I often have often (8gb+).

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Medium - prefer lighter all things being equal, but a good matte screen and enough processing power / ram more important given budget.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferred - 14 - 15". Could consider 15.6" if other features for budget are compelling.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No CAD/video editing. Primarily browser games, though I also run some basic 3D PC games (Sniper Party, Tabletop simulator).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A - see above. A separate video card is not a must.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Matte screen as discussed above, helpful to have multiple USB inputs, e.g. 3+. SSD would be good.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

At home I hook up via HDMI to a monitor.

I have an SSD currently loaded into the Spectre x360, so could port that across. Upgradeability of HD / ram would be useful.

Ultimately I'm after something with matte screen, decent ability to handle multiple programs (word, Adobe, Firefox with number of tabs), reasonable form factor, and a lowish capacity for gaming.

Thanks for reading and happy to answer any queries or clarify :)

    Cheers and happy NY!

Laptop for CAD/Modelling and School for $1500

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 11:48 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1500 (willing to go up a bit if insurance is included), USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Do not care at all for 2 in 1, but isn't a deal breaker. Decent battery life is necessary, and best specifications are probably most important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Would rather not look like a bulky gaming laptop, somewhere around size/weight of XPS 15

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. around 15 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not sure of exactly what programs I will be running, but I will be doing some cad and some video editing therefore I definitely need a video card.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Definitely want a good keyboard, reliable build quality, and good touchpad.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd prefer it look nice with smaller bezels, but doesn't matter all that much.

    Thank you!

Gaming laptop recommendation (US, $700-800, 15.6")

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:09 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: US, $700-800. I don't mind buying used on eBay, since my budget is very tight.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specs

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Don't care

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, but might dual boot with Linux for work

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 is fine, bigger is better, but not important.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming. Mainly Overwatch and BFV

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? OW and BFV. 40+ fps on high would be nice in BFV.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality is important as I'll be traveling with it. I'll use an external keyboard and mouse. Solid wifi hardware.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm a desktop guy, but I'll be traveling overseas in Europe for about 5 months, so I want to be able to game and work while I travel. I'll be selling this laptop when I return to the US in September, so something with decent resale value would be nice as I'll be building a new desktop upon my return.

I've been looking at Acer Helios 300's and Overpowered 15+, but the latter is out of stock.

Bonus points: If anyone knows of a decent mobile hotspot that I can buy that will work in Europe and not be horrible in terms of game latency, that would be awesome!

$1000, ~14", USA -- A very portable laptop (possible 2-in-1) that can be used for programming and CAD while traveling.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:07 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$1000 --- USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. !. Portability, 2. Battery Life, 3. Specs, 4. 2-in-1
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important. Lighter and thinner the better.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Primarily windows, although I'd be great to partition and dual boot Ubuntu.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~13" is what I imagine is best. Bigger could be better if it doesn't impact price, weight, or build quality.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.I'd be running SolidWorks (CAD) but only with a few small parts and drawings open at a time. I'd also be writing code to do data analysis.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?Gaming option is nice, but not needed. I'd likely install steam for small games.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality as it might be handled roughly at times, and will always be in and out of a suitcase/backpack. I'd need at least 500GB SSD of storage, preferably 1TB SSD. Battery life is important, ideally >>5hrs.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd be using this a lot on buses/trains/planes while traveling in various countries. I don't need this to have any aesthetic features, because I'll likely cover it in stickers to make it look cheap and less appealing to a thief. I was looking at the Surface Book 2, as it meets most specifications, but the price is steep. I also haven't read too much into reviews to see if it's worth it and if people like it. Beyond work, I'd be using this for basic media entertainment, very light photo editing, browser based website maintenance, and travel research.
