    Simple Questions - December 02, 2018

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 04:13 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Everyone needs to hear this apparently: TAKE A VIDEO OF ALL UNBOXING FOR ALL PARTS!!!

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 04:24 AM PST

It seems way too often whether it's here or some other PC sub that someone's saying they got a 1050 in the box of a 2080, or an i3 in the box of an i9.

Even if you bought it in the store, VIDEO. It's extremely easy to swap the parts and fill it with wet sand to make it feel like the correct weight and it won't make the sand sound. It's illegal, obviously, but that isn't stopping them. We're paying way too much money for these parts to not safeguard ourselves.

An unboxing video can prove you got a $100 GPU in the box of a $1,000 GPU.

One last thing: Make sure the video is one single continuous clip. If you edit parts of the video when you're trying to prove you were scammed, they'll say you're the one trying to scam them.

Edit: A lot of people are saying scammers could use this after purchasing a legit item and returning a fake one. While this could happen, video recording the unboxing is still the only concrete evidence you can have besides your say so. If anyone has better suggestions, feel free to post them.

    EVGA 2080/1050??

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 10:52 PM PST

So I'm building my first pc. I didn't open anything until I was ready to build. Got the case yesterday as my last part, got as far as installing my GPU. Opened up my 2080 RTX box and there's a GTX 1050 inside...Best Buy can you explain?

Edit: glad to announce Best Buy truly has some great customer service. The customer service rep was extremely helpful. I was only at the counter for about 5 minutes from start to finish. She asked what the problem was, asked what course of action I wanted to take, I told her I just wanted the correct product and she said she would get one shipped to my house by Thursday. All I did was provide the receipt and order number. Excellent!

My "first" PC is a beast!

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 01:05 PM PST

Friday night I've spent 4 hours building my new computer by myself and surprisingly it booted at the first try! I've spent all Saturday night installing software.

I've never built a PC in my life before, I've only had laptops. Watching Youtube videos from The Verge (joking) LinusTechTips and JayzTwoCents got me confident enough to accept this challenge.

Total spent on the PC itself buying everything from Amazon IT was 1.167€

Sunday finally I did some testings and the CPU never goes above 64°C at full load on the 6 cores running each @ 4.5GHz

The GPU stays between 50-61°C while running @ 1.590MHz with max settings in Rise Of The Tomb Raider

    I already had input/output devices/accessories.
Check out these pictures and check Steam for the specs!

    Free 2600

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 08:39 AM PST

Over the past week, I've been putting a lot of parts on my Amazon cart so I could see their final price with shipping, but without ordering anything. One of those was a Ryzen 5 2600. On Friday, I received that CPU, without paying anything. What should I do with it? Will Amazon charge me? The CPU is still sealed, just in case.

I decided to build this, as I'm finishing my graduate degree next week. Things I learned:

    • Liquid cooling is amazing. The all in one solution was really easy and gave me more room to work with on the motherboard.
    • I'm a huge fan of bigger cases, I'm not the best at cable management, so this allowed me to hide cables easier, that a more proficient builder wouldn't have as much trouble with.
    • I hate glass sided cases, but the version I wanted was sold out.
    • Plug in the CPU 12 V before mounting a top radiator

Things I still have to do:

    • Setup my two other monitors
    • Setup my vive
    • Bench mark
      • Anyone have any good advise here? I'm not going to be a super OC enthusiast, just let my MOBO auto do that

I have no dgpu but my friend id letting me borrow his old evga 1030 gddr5 to see if its the motherboard ports that are the problem. I know its a long shot but does anyone have any suggestions to try in the mean time? I have re-seated everything unplugged and plugged everything back in. This is my first build.

Just finished my first sleeper build: Dell OptiPlex 7010

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 11:40 AM PST

I've built a few PCs in the past for my friends, but never had the budget due to medical school. I always told myself I'd build a rig once I got out into residency and had some money. That is until I saw an Optiplex online that was too good to pass up for a sleeper build. So I sold my new-ish 2-in-1 now that classes are over, and bought a Thinkpad x230 for portability and the Optiplex + parts for desktop gaming.

I lucked out on finding a "Mid Tower" sized case that could accommodate a PSU and full-size GPU. I tried to have some fun with it and see how "budget sleeper" I could get:

    • Dell Optiplex 7010 Pre-Built: i5-3470 Quad Core, 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM, 320GB 7200RPM HDD - $123
    • GPU: Zotac 1050Ti OC Edition (refurbished from Zotac website) - $88
    • Additional RAM: Kingston HyperX FURY 4GB 1600MHz DDR3 - $22.5
    • SSD: Silicon Power 256GB SSD 3D NAND A55 SLC Cache - $40
    • PSU: EVGA 450 BR, 80+ Bronze - $35
    • I already had a 60 Hz IPS monitor, mech keyboard (blues), and a G203 mouse from a friend's old build
    • Total Price: $308.5

Poor quality pic, still have to do some cable management: https://imgur.com/a/FhXEkeP

CPU and motherboard work separately but not together, what else can I try?

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Was playing a game when my PC became totally unresponsive so I had to force shutdown (held power button down).

Turns out my GPU has died (tested it in 3 diff systems with no luck) and potentially the power supply too. I didn't test if the psu died, but I've got rid of it and have the new one that's in the parts list above.

Using my new PSU, I connect my monitor to the cpu graphics, reach the windows log on screen and then the monitor goes black and I get a "no signal" screen. The PC stays on and the fans are all spinning. I turn the PC off, turn it on again and this time I get a no signal just before the no signal screen.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    • As I've already said, I got a new psu.

    • My SSD works 100% fine when I plug it into my brothers PC

    • I've inserted a different GPU, still get no signal.

    • I've tried hdmi and dvi cables, no luck

    • Brothers PC work's with my monitor/cables fine.

    • I borrowed a friends old motherboard with an i5 2500, I put my CPU in his mobo as well as his CPU in my mobo. Both set ups work, but his CPU in my motherboard cuts signal out for a few seconds every now and then, but always recovers and overall still works.

    • RAM works fine in both of the above set ups

    • I've also taken the battery out of the mobo and put it back in, didn't make a difference

    • Bios shouldn't be an issue as all the parts have worked fine for years?

    • When I swapped the CPU's to the different mobo's. I tried to look for bent pins but didn't see any, so I'm 95% sure it can't be that.

The only thing I can think of is the PSU died (wish I'd tested if it had before getting rid of it) and it killed my GPU and also messed up the mobo. Is that possible?

I'm honestly stumped, anything else I should do?

    Sapphire Nitro+ RX 580 8GB Question...

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 12:55 PM PST

So, I'm pretty much 1 part away from building my PC, and that part is the graphics card. I've decided to buy Sapphire Nitro+ RX 580 8GB , but I'm kinda confused on which one I should choose. So there is Sapphire Nitro+ RX 580 8GB 11265-01-20G, and there is also Sapphire Nitro+ RX 580 8GB Special Edition 11265-21-20G. Aside from their looks, what are the differences between them, and which one is the one that I should buy? The price doesn't really matter. Thank you so much.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 01:10 PM PST

Alright, So I recently built a gaming PC and when I'm playing a game under high load, My computer sometimes turns off.

All of the parts are new.

My CPU and GPU temps are stable.

    Here's a part list:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Z29TRJ

I don't really 100% know why It keeps failing but it does on games like,

    • Fortnite (only on all epic settings)
    • Arizona Sunshine
    • Beat Saber
    • Heaven Benchmark

In rare cases, I get the windows stop code (WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR)

I would really appreciate it if you could possibly tell me whats going on / how to fix it.

EDIT: Here's a screenshot of MSI Afterburner and CPU-z if it helps:

The build above costs me 1500~ with the power supply which is not listed. Additionally i already found a monitor the Samsung U28E590D 28" (3840 x 2160 Pixel) which i think is okay for right now. That makes the total price 1880€.

So my question is if this is okay ? I know how to use one but i dont have no experience with the inner life of a pc. Some friend helped me out with the configuration and i used pcpartpicker.com to make this list.

Looking for help with a custom full tower pc case!! Paying!!

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 03:43 PM PST

First things first. I apologize if this isn't the right place for this post but I'm having a lot of trouble finding someone to make a actual custom pc case.

I recently saw a custom pc case that resembled a "Maliwan" weapon from borderlands 2. Link provided :https://pcpartpicker.com/b/xYCJ7P

I love the entire borderlands franchise and want a "Tediore" weapon style case. Example of the pattern and text: https://ibb.co/PTyPyTd

I'm looking for this to be a full tower case. Case I would like this based off of: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/BKW9TW/corsair-case-750d.

I'm very excited and serious about this build. Anyone willing to make this case please contact me on Reddit!! We can discuss payment details and what not in a personal message.

Upgrade from 4670k, or try overclocking?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 04:25 PM PST

My current CPU is an i5 4670k, along with a GTX 1080 and 8 GB of DDR3 RAM.

My i5-4670k is starting to hit a wall - Battlefield V, for instance, drops to 30 FPS at times even on medium settings. I think it's time for an upgrade, and I'm looking at the i7-8700 (or 8700k). However, that requires a full MOBO and RAM upgrade, too, which comes out to around 600 dollars for an upgrade.

Will overclocking get me playing BFV at a more consistent framerate? Or is that not enough of a bandaid for my current system?

What should I be looking for to improve my PC?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 03:58 PM PST

My current build is the first PC I ever owned, and I've had it for a few years with minimal upgrades. I use it exclusively for gaming. I play Fortnite, CSGO, PUBG, and other random games here and there. I'm mostly just looking for ways to make my PC run smoother and cleaner, as well as increase frame rate for the games I play. Any help is much appreciated. If there is any other info you need to help me I can provide that as well.

    Currently I have:

    AMD-FX8320 8core processor 3.50hz

    GTX-1050ti

    8GB of RAM(unknown company)

    2TB Hard Drive

I'm buying a monitor, what size/resolution should it be?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 03:51 PM PST

I've decided on the rest of the build, what's left is choosing the right monitor and that seems to be more difficult than I had thought it would be.

I'm willing to spend $100-180 on the monitor and not worry about getting a new one in at least a good few years, at least unless I go for a dual monitor.

What I've figured out so far is that an IPS panel is better for me since I won't notice the input lag, and that I definitely don't need anything bigger than a 24" screen with my setup.

But, a monitor of an arbitrary size comes in different resolutions or even aspect ratios, and that confuses me.

For background, my build is a Ryzen 3 2200g APU without a dedicated graphics card, but I might buy one in a few months.

I'm gonna be using the PC for a lot of things, like drawing, programming, game development, music production, too.

What resolution should the monitor be? What about the aspect ratio? And most importantly: why?

    Memory woes

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 10:52 AM PST

    I have a Threadripper 2950x on an ASUS Prime x399-A. Currently I have 3 sticks CT16G4RFD4266 (Crucial, DDR4-2666 16GB CL19, ECC)

This combination won't POST. Edit: I get Q-code 16 (Pre-memory System Agent initialization is started) and the DRAM LED.

I looked into ASUS'Memory-QVL (something I maybe should've done earlier) and this module isn't listed. Actually I don't see any module with a 19 timing. Should I still expect it to work? As I understand it the QVL is more a list of "verified to work" modules rather than "only working" ones.

In a similar vein, the CPU has a quad-channel memory controller. Would it even work with <4 modules?

This isn't my first build, but it feels to me like these details matter more than they used to.
