What is considered an intermediate linux user?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 08:21 AM PST

More so what would one have to learn about Linux to be considered an intermediate level user?

I have learned several commands for navigation, storage, file editing, user accounts, even a bit of networking. Also about processes, signals, permissions, groups, the / dir, and its sub dir within but Idk what to call myself. Don't get me wrong though, IK THERES PLENTY TO LEARN AND YOU WILL ALWAYS CONTINUE TO LEARN MORE THINGS YOU DIDNT KNOW BEFORE. But when can you take that step and say "Ok I have a medium knowledge of the Linux OS, Im not a noob anymore (or at least a beginner)".

Quantity over quality? Or quality over quantity? Example being you can learn a bunch of commands but does it matter more on learning the important ones.

Having issues with dual booting on a T430 laptop

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 08:19 AM PST

I think my last post did not go through...

So here is the issue: https://youtu.be/wp-4QkcAiYI

Basically, when I get to the GRUB and I select Windows (same drive but on another partition), my computer reboots. I ticked and unticked a few things in the BIOS, such as disabling Secure Boot and enabling legacy mode with no apparent success. Help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that Linux Mint boots, and Windows doesn't (sorry for the confusion).

Open a folder within a directory?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 02:21 PM PST

I am trying to make a file executable. I type cd ~/Documents
and I am in the documents directory. However when I try to open the folder I need to get to, "Standard Notes", it either says the files doesn't exist or too many arguments.

    I've tried cd ~/Documents/Standard Notes
and it just says too many arguments. But when I click "open file in terminal" it has the exact same thing for the file location.

Google isn't much help so I'm here. Thank you for the help :)

I want to create a bootable usb drive with a linux distro. what distro would you recommend a noob and how should I proceed with the procedure?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:56 AM PST

Topic pretty much sums it up.

I know there are guides to doing this on blogs but they differ in detail, and I dont know how dated they are etc. and I wanted to hear input from people who know and use linux on a regular basis. Thanks.

Do microsoft branded hardware such as the Arch mouse compatible with linux, or do they need something windows specific for it to function? I love the sleek look of it but I also want to use it for linux purposes.

Read-only fs error when trying to update ubuntu

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 02:25 PM PST

Weird thing. I'm not at home right now to post the log, but essentially, I tried to run updates and noticed it failed to write to /tmp and like /lib as it was updating so the process errored out.

I tried running uuku to get the newest kernel (currently on 4.19.2) and errored our saying it couldn't write to the disk.

Tried running kparted (I have kde plasma as DE) and it wouldnt even accept my sudo password.

When I went to / and ls -al, everything is root:root with all write permissions correct...

Anyone know offhand what this might be or where to check?

    Ideal dual boot partitions

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:48 AM PST

    'ello r/linux4noobs,

I have several questions regarding dual booting. I've had some partial success in dual booting, but with how I have set things up, I need to enter bios every time I want to swap to a different system which is not ideal.

This time, I'm prepared to start the process by reinstalling everything so that, hopefully, I know where each piece of the puzzle is and why.

Contextual info: 3 different drives (soon to be 4) 120 gb m.2 ssd 500 gb sata ssd 2 tb hdd

Priorities: I want to have my Windows 10 OS on the m.2 (roughly 20-30gb?) And the rest of m.2 dedicated to my Linux OS (not sold on a distro yet). Correct me if I'm wrong, but it should be possible to create a partition on the m.2 that gives enough room (plus a little wiggle room) for the Windows OS, but I should be able to house my C: drive on the 500 gb drive. Is this the ideal setup if I want to boot either operating system very quickly?

If that's the correct (or nearly correct) thought process, then how should I sequence my installs? Two USB drives (one Windows 10, some Linux distro on the other) and a clean slate? I'm guessing I want to install Windows 10 first on the m.2 and at some point during the install point to my sata ssd for where to put my C: drive? And before I wrap up this monstrously helpless thread, may I also ask, how much partitioning should I do in advance to make sure that Windows doesn't overstep it's reach to the point where Linux will be stepping on toes during it's install process?

Thank you for any amount of help, and I'm sorry for the long windedness.

Must I format the entire drive when reinstalling?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:45 AM PST

This just hit me: if I were to reinstall on my drive with two partitions (sda1 as /boot and sda2 as /), could I just format sda2 with fdisk and leave all bootloader files on sda1 which is exclusively for GRUB? I don't have to go through the tedious process of partitioning twice and installing the bootloader again. Once completed, I should be able to boot up with a fresh install with the old GRUB settings, right?

Audio Not Working on Ubuntu 16.04

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:49 AM PST

Just yesterday, everything was fine. Previously, only my input devices would not work. Now nothing works.

I have checked Alsamixer. I have purged and reinstalled Pulseaudio. I have rebooted my device countless times. I have changed my sound card, including external and internal sound cards. I have unmuted everything, volume is full. I have tried different browsers and playing files from my desktop itself.

    Please somebody help.

In what other terminals besides alacritty and kitty can I bind key codes to shortcuts?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 11:07 AM PST

In alacritty/kitty I send char/keycodes by binding them to a shortcut. So for example by pressing Super+v I can send C-b % and this make controlling tmux very easy.

Are there any other terminals that can do this? I tried multiple ones but I can seem to find this functionality,

Can't boot into Ubuntu after installing

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 11:05 PM PST

I've recently installed Ubuntu 18.04 alongside my installation of Windows 10 on my Acer laptop. I cleared ample disk space for Ubuntu, disabled Fast Boot and installed Ubuntu with the "Install alongside Windows 10" option in the installer. The installation finished without issue.

Unfortunately, Windows 10 is the only option to boot into on the boot menu. I disabled UEFI and tried booting into all the options there, and no luck. Why can't I boot into Ubuntu? Did the installation actually fail and just not tell me? What did I do wrong?

How do you run daemons from an interactive shell?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 11:47 PM PST

If I were to run the dunst daemon, I would have dunst & in my startup bash script but if I were to for some reason kill it after, I would open up a new terminal and run said command but if I close the terminal, it'd go down with it. The only way I know to make it run in the background again is either restarting my X session or running the script again which would be inconvenient as it contains other startup programs.

    Cheers.

Error Installing RPM Package on CentOS 7.5 : Requires: libdouble-conversion.so.1()(64bit)

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:08 AM PST

    Hey all

I'm new to Linux in general but I'm having problems getting a rpm package to install. I get the error:

    Error: Package: WinCC_OA_3.16-base-rhel-0-4.x86_64 (/WinCC_OA_3.16-base-rhel-0-4.x86_64)

    Requires: libdouble-conversion.so.1()(64bit)

I've looked up the libdouble thing online but I'm not sure how to get that lib to install.

SSD and HDD setup for new install

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 09:08 AM PST

Planning to start fresh with a 500GB SSD and 1TB HDD, and I'm curious how to best organize and partition the drives for Ubuntu. I have no plans to dual boot. I have some music and documents, which I assume will go on HDD, but beyond that the only other large storage sink are games, which I would like on the SSD for performance.

Could someone outline a basic organization of partitions and sizes I should use? I think I want / on SSD and /home on HDD, but I'm unsure if I need any other partitions set up. Last time I used linux I just had one disk, and no SSD.

    Intel/AMD Laptop Switchable Graphics Question

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 08:56 AM PST

Apologies if this is the wrong forum for this question: I am seriously trying to switch from Win10 to either Ubuntu or Manjaro and the major holdup for me is the Nvidia / Intel hybrid graphics in my current laptop.

Are Switchable Graphics officially supported by amdgpu for the RX 550 on either Ubuntu or Manjaro (or even other distros)? If they are then I will sell my current laptop and buy one with the RX 550 / Intel HD 630 configuration.
