Looking for good looking architecture student laptop

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 01:41 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

    max 2500€ , Germany.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Clamshell, Good Battery (min. 5 Hours for Browsing,Netflix,Spotify)

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very Important, Im looking for sleek design laptop with weight not over 2,5 kg. I am a mobile person.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Min. 15" Screen with Excellent display, I used to use the retina display 13,3 MBP 2015

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I am studying Architectur, so i use often Vectorworks, Revit, Sketchup, Lumion, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign.

I make sometimes video on Youtube, 4k Video editing on Premier Pro.

I am planning just to play FIFA19 and PES2019 with highest setting min. 60 fps.smoothly.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Build Quality and Longevity are the most important.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

After doing the research I was interested in buying a 2018 Advanced razer blade 15 (i7-8750H, 1060 Max-Q, Full HD 144Hz, 512GB SSD) .But I saw in the Razer subforum a lot of problems that occur on Razer laptops in general, does this apply in Blade 14 "2017 or also applies to RB15 2018. Besides negative things there are also some people who say that the last batch of RB15 has undergone improvements. In addition, Razer only offers a 1-year warranty, but after I asked CS on Amazon they offered a 2-year warranty (due to European rules). I don't know which one is right, maybe someone has experienced a warranty in Europe?

Besides that, did anyone experience a battery that was bloated and exploded in RB15, because last night I had just read the RB14 post, the battery exploded.

Alternatively, I am also interested in XPS 15 2018, but many experience XPS overheating. and only has a 1050Ti Graphic Card which might not be futureproof.

I plan to buy the new laptop no later than the end of April. is it worth it if you wait for RB15 2019 / XPS15 2019

    FYI. I am using MBP 13 2015

Upgrading from MacBook Pro 13" Late 2011, UK, £1200-ish max. Business/personal.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 02:26 AM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

No set budget but I think common sense is probably maximum £1,200 ish. UK.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Don't need 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life is handy, needs to be quick and handle multiple programs & browser pages at once

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    nice but not essential

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

Prefer Mac as used my current one for 8 years ish. But open to Windows. I've never, ever had a problem with my current MacBook (touch wood).

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

13" minimum - 15" max probably. I use 1 external monitor at work and plan on adding a second but my current MacBook can't handle a second external monitor.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Daily use includes: Photo editing (use Affinity photo & designer), Mac mail application, CCTV application, Safari (multiple tabs), Chrome (multiple tabs), Teamviewer, some excel/pages. Current MacBook is really struggling with speed to load everything and often crashes.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Don't game properly. Occasionally online poker.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Reliable build quality, good speed, ability to run two external monitors plus main laptop display.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Reluctant to upgrade my current MacBook Pro as its served me so well and i've had zero issues. Had it for around 8 years and its been great. Its just getting so slow now and struggling to run basic tasks like load e-mails etc. Currently run MacOS High Sierra ver 10.13.6. 2.4 GHz intel core i5, 4GB memory, intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB.

Looking for a decent laptop to play at work.

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 11:58 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ≥$600 in the USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is easily the most important.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Most of the games that I want to run are made for Windows.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Almost exclusively gaming. Maybe Netflix or Hulu.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The most hardware intensive game that I want to run is Total War: Warhammer. I would like to run it on at least medium settings at 30FPS(Console gamer, don't really care about FPS).
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No requirements, really. I would like a keyboard that doesn't have completely flat keys, but I can deal with it.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm not looking for a "console killer" or anything like that, just something to play at work and something to play RTS and City Builders. I've been considering getting a GPD Win, but I wanted to seek out a better informed opinion before making a decision.

Is there a benchmarking website or app for all the different gaming laptops?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 06:34 PM PST

After lots of research, especially seeing advice from this sub, I think an i7-8750H, GTX 1070, 16-32GB Ram, and various SDD/HDD configurations will yield the most bang for the buck.

I see lots of recommendations for zephyrus M, strix, aorus, MSI (quite a few to keep up with), and less so for alienware and others. I try finding comparable laptops, which for me will be 15'', so relatively portable, and with the above components.

Even then I see fluctations in price, with an equivalent alienware being 1800, roughly 400 less than an equivalent zephyrus M for example.

Then I check gaming benchmarks, mostly on youtube channel Jarrod's Tech, and not everything is so cut and dry. For example one of his recent comparisons between zephyrus M and and scar II saw that even though scar II was cheaper, it had higher FPS on multiple games.

This whole world of laptop recommendations can be pretty confusing for me, so I just wanted to find some website that benchmarked all these laptops for various games, and then compare across that.

Good pc, strong battery, 1200€, student purpose

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 11:01 PM PST

    Hello guys,

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1200€, Europe
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Decent battery life, good and bright screen. I don't like rotative things or touch screen but why not? No noticeable emission (noise nor heat while I'm doing small tasks). 15" prefered
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I want it to be classy with a premium look. Note that I kinda like the Thinkpads look.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15".
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Word, Excel, Chrome with Youtube on. All together. And sometimes Hearthstone and Artifact (aka very light gaming)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Artifact and hearthstone: that's why I need atleast an mx150.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -a good keyboard is important and a decent screen resolution (owing to how many videos I watch). I prefer to have an USB-C charging PC since I have a powerbank able to charge laptops using USBC. Seems like an i5 processor would suit my usage needs but would be happy with i7 (the faster the better!). Also I don't want it to be greedy on ressource usage: I want it calm, cool and not overheating. Also no noise. I understand that it will much likely heat up a little bit while playing light games.

I investigated a lot guys: XPS 15 but mane QC issues?

Asus zenbook UX333 ? Beautiful but I saw that asus is a terrible laptop creator.

HP Spectre? I don't like the brand, but maybe a surprise?

Lenovo thinkpad? It's sooooooooooo pricey I wanna cry.

The noise on Matebook huawei is a no go for me.

Any more? I can wait till mid january if necessary.

TL'DR: premium laptop, small usage but intense in time so I need good battery. 15". I need at least an mx150 to play light games. No over heating nor noise.

I wanna enjoy the tasks I have to do on this computer.

I can up the price if it's worth.

Thanks for reading, I hope you will help me for my first reddit post :D

17inch screen laptop recommendation for parents/general use

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 01:11 AM PST

I know I just missed cyber monday deals but I couldn't find any 17 inch ones. I was wondering if any savy folks here know of any decent deals for a 17in laptop. It's for my parents and it's general use, web surfing, nothing intensive. Ideally under $400, but if it's a really crappy laptop I'm ok going a little a bit above as long as it's a decent deal. Will there be sales again close to xmas time and should I wait? Thank you in advance for your help! :D

Acer Predator Helios 300 dropped in price to 999.00. great value for money

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 05:42 AM PST

    Here is the deal

Edit 1: looks like the deal has ended, but you can still get this configuration for 1082, it is the same laptop plus 2 TB HDD so it is almost like you are still paying 999 for the laptop itself and 83 for 2TB HDD.

    Specs:

    • 15.6" FHD IPS w/ 144Hz Refresh Rate (300nit Brightness & 72% NTSC)
    • Intel 6-Core i7-8750H.
    • Overclockable GeForce GTX 1060 6GB.
    • 16GB DDR4, 256GB NVMe SSD (Extra empty accessible slot for 2.5 inch hard drive or SSD).

Main Con: It gets pretty hot, and the CPU throttles, there are conflicting reports that a simple undervolt/repaste resolves that issue, some people claim that the throttle is much harder but for the price the deal is pretty good.

Main Pro: Value for money, at this price almost nothing comes even close to what the predator offer, with Overclockable GeForce GTX 1060 6GB and the 144 HZ refresh rate.

Here is how you should expect the 1060 to perform Scroll down for games fps/settings*

For other deals I would usually list a comperhenisve post with most of the deals, but there are 4 up already so no need to spam you further, so I am upfating my friday's post with Monday's deals, however for now, the The_Adviser100's list is a great resource, check it out..

For previous deals and some on going deals check my other list (this is my friday post that is being updated with Monday's deals.

Laptop for General Use + some music processing, Portugal, 800€

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 04:17 AM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Portugal, up to 800€

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness are not important, I care about design but won't sacrifice specs for it

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preference 15" but it's not that important

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. The most I plan to use the laptop for is music composing and small processing, with a program like Fruit Loops and Audacity

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd say reliability

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been searching around a bit, please keep in mind that I understand very little about computers and hardware. I'd say that something like an Intel i5 or the equivalent AMD with an 128Gb SSD and 8Gb of RAM would do the trick for me. I'm totally ok with online buying

    Thank you for your help

Looking for a new 2-in-1 for programming, word processing, and light gaming.

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 09:40 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1800-$2000 USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I am looking for a 2-in-1 so I can use my own keyboards and occasionally use it as a tablet. Don't really care about battery life because I'll just have it plugged in everywhere.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't want a bulky "gaming" laptop, but nothing paper-thin either. Something with a little weight to it that feels durable.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I will eventually dual-boot Linux and Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-16 inches, 1440p+ required

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be running Word, a few non-intensive games, and some IDEs. I would like a good processor and dedicated graphics to help with machine learning and dealing with large datasets.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League of Legends occasionally, and some indie games/visual novels. I would prefer a refresh rate of above 60 Hz in general but I don't know how realistic that is on a 2-in-1.

    • Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? An Ethernet port would be nice, as well as a USB-C or two. I would prefer one large SSD over dual storage to make dual booting a little less complicated but I can work with whatever. I will be using my own keyboards so the stock keyboard won't matter.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Nothing. Thanks for the help!

Walmart MSI GF63 8RC, cop or drop?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 02:37 AM PST

Hello! I was wondering to see if this was worth it for what I purchased it for on CyberMonday. I've seen some people on other forums say that for this price a GTX 1060 should be in there, so is it still worth it? I compared it to another MSI product. I personally bought the one that I bought because it came with the extra 1TB HDD and didn't mind the slight (or drastic) FPS difference between the 2 based YT videos I watched of frame comparison + the 16gb ram.

Was the purchase worth it? I feel like I need some validation for my decision. I didn't care so much about the free COD4.

    Specs for what I bought.

    • MSI GF63 8RC
    • -264 Performance Gaming Laptop 15.6"
    • -Intel 8th Gen i7-8750H
    • - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 4G
    • -256GB SSD + 1TB HDD
    • -16GB RAM,
    • -Windows 10
    • - Free COD4 Black Ops

Specs for what I compared it to

    • Intel 8th Generation 6-Core processors
    • Next generation VR Ready graphics up to NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060
    • 15.6 FHD (1920x1080) screen
    • Cooler Boost Technology keeps your laptop performing cool and efficiently
    • Program your game specific macros for a backlit keyboard by SteelSeries
    • Equipped with HDMI, mDP, USB and Type-C ports
    • 256GB SSD Storage
    • Windows 10 operating system

    Portable budget laptop

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 01:55 AM PST

Currently own an Asus c101 Chromebook, which I love the feel and simplicity of. Beautiful to hold and travel with, but I'm starting to miss playing football manager and other simple games with friends and the flexibility a Windows PC has.

Originally thought the Surface Go was ideal, but going for the better spec version or adding keyboard etc pushes the price quite high.

Looking to keep the cost as low as possible whilst still owning something useable that suits my needs.

Nearest to hitting the mark on everything seems to be Acer switch alpha 12, thoughts?

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-SA5-271-Touchscreen-Detachable-i3-6100/dp/B01KHTMXNK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1543312200&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=acer+switch+alpha+12&dpPl=1&dpID=41YWpPwdy-L&ref=plSrch

Total budget and country of purchase:

-approx £400 UK, lower is possible

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    -touchscreen/convertible/2in1 is ideal

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    - I definitely prefer it to be light and portable

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    -Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • 10-13"ish

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Mostly web browsing and documents on Google drive. Watching videos/streaming sports. Support for taking notes/drawing with stylus would be great

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Mostly football manager 2019 and some other low spec games

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

-USB charging as I dislike carrying around bulky chargers, touchscreen and possibly stylus support. SSD hard drive is preferred, but ok if not, at least 64gb.

    Thanks

    Multipurpose gaming laptop <$1,000

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 07:51 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1,000, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specs are a priority, but battery life is nice

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming mostly but also, Microsoft Word, browsing internet, watching Netflix,

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Skyrim, Fortnite. At least 60 FPS. I want it to look, play and run better than an Xbox One but it doesn't need to be crazy.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd like it to be upgradable for the future. I'd like all programs on it, whether it's a game, Microsoft Word, internet, etc, to always run smoothly and quickly, even when all are running simultaneously. I've seen reviews about people complaining they bought a $700 paperweight. I'd like it to last me 4-5 years at least. Thank you all for considering my requirements.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1k ish USD
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best value for the money and good battery life are important. I need to use this laptop in all of my classes this year
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Quite important t I would prefer something not too bulky or heavy if possible.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows due to software
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? this is more about weight and thin-ness a 15" with a very small bezel would be ok - or smaller screen
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I need this laptop to run AutoCAD, Revit, Sketchup
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This is for my girlfriend who wanted a Pixelbook. Obviously a pixelbook cant get this done (and multiple posts address this) So whats the sleekest best form factor that wont affect function for software and typing in class that is also relatively cheap.

    • Thanks!!

    Good budget gaming laptop?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 11:46 PM PST

I've been looking to get more involved with PC gaming for a while, but I simply don't have the room at my place to look into a full fledged gaming PC. I've heard quite a bit about gaming laptops though, and I came here to look for some more diverse opinions.

I'm not looking for anything crazy great, but if it makes the games look nice and run well, I'm fine with it. I'm mostly looking for things at around 500$ CAD or less, but I'd be open to hear suggestions about anything that goes higher than that if it's worth the price.

I'm also making this post right before I go to sleep, so depending on whether or not I end up actually falling asleep, I'll take a look at the replies in the morning.

    Questions about buying refurbished laptops

    Posted: 26 Nov 2018 05:40 PM PST

Hey guys, I've been in the market for a development and travel laptop for a while. I recently stumbled through articles like this one: https://www.windowscentral.com/new-used-or-refurbished-laptop-which-should-you-buy

    Which lead me here: https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/buying-refurbished-laptops/

So the consensus is that it's a bit risky, but I think I have enough experience to handle the risk. Some places I've found are pretty adamant about buying refurbished: https://www.technugget.net/2018/11/25/important-thing-big-companies-wont-tell-you-abou-choosing-and-purchasing-a-laptop/

So I'm kind of overwhelmed. Should I avoid refurbished? Should I avoid certain retailers? I apologize if this is a commonly discussed topic, I'm trying to get some solid, recent advice to influence my purchase. Thanks in advance!

Looking for a laptop that will last for a bit and is versatile. I would prefer something slim but that tends to be out of my price range.

    Max of something 1500-1600

    Prefer 1070

Looking at the HP OMEN 17-AN188NR and Dell Alienware 17 R5.

Screen quality does matter to me.
