    Simple Questions - November 28, 2018

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 04:13 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Is putting a PC together REALLY as easy as everyone says it is?

Everyone always says this but as a complete beginner, is it truly that easy to do?

Tempered glass panel shattered in delivery

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 11:55 PM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I ordered the Cooler Master MasterCase H500 from Newegg on the 23rd (Black Friday), and after it arrived today, when I opened up the packaging, I found that the tempered glass panel was completely shattered.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

In an attempt to set the world record on solving the largest jigsaw puzzle, I started piecing the panel together I've sent off a replace request to Newegg.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

    https://imgur.com/a/pM7kRtY

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Is it common for tempered glass cases to be broken in transit? Should I have just gone to a local electronics store for the case instead?

100% cpu usage with a rtx 2080ti and 4690k. Bottleneck?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 06:40 AM PST

Getting 100% cpu usage in assassins creed odyssey using a 4690k and a 2080ti in 4k. Is the cpu becoming a bottleneck? I get around 40 - 50 fps most of the time.

High quality cases that aren't designed for gamers

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 09:56 AM PST

I've had a hard time finding a high quality workstation case that meets my needs and doesn't look like some kid's riced out Honda Civic (and I mean no offense to those who prefer that aesthetic, as it does seem to be quite popular)

The last computer I built, I used a Fractal Design Define R5 case, and it was just about perfect. I liked the understated design, excellent cable management, quiet operation, and overall quality. Unfortunately, the Define R6 only has one optical drive bay and I need two.

    • I don't want a transparent side panel.
    • Preferred color is black or very dark grey.
    • The only lighting I am interested in is a power/hd indicator.
    • At least two external bays in the front for a hot swap drives.
    • Quality is important. It's got to be solid, look good, no sharp edges, no thin punched steel panels.

Right now I'm considering a Lian Li case, but as nice as they are, their cable management options are pretty severely limited.

Thought the retailer forgot to include my screws with the case, it was actually in a HDD Tray...

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 02:00 PM PST

I was furious because I first thought that the retailer who sold me the Phanteks P350x did not include the screws. Looked everywhere for it, until I realized it may be under the PSU Shroud. I removed and saw a little box in a hdd tray. Guess they like to hide things.

I feel a bit stupid because I was about to call customer support and wait another 7 days to achieve my first build. It might be useful for people in a similar situation !

Sudden price jump for R5 2600?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 01:52 PM PST

Why is it that after all the Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals the Ryzen 5 2600 jumped to ~$200 from $160? I'm sort of new when it comes to paying attention to prices so if there's some sort of trend I'm unaware of, please enlighten me. Thanks!

    I just impulsively bought a 2TB M.2 SSD

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 12:50 PM PST

As the title says, i just ordered a 2TB M.2 SSD from amazon that should arrive Friday. I built my own PC a couple months ago, and originally had a 2.5" 500GB SSD and a 3.5" 2TB HDD. When i built the PC, i had an issue with managing the 4 cables for them. I couldn't really fit it cleanly, and, to this day, the side panel is bulging a bit because of that.

Wanting to keep things simple and all in one place, i recently looked into a bigger SSD to fit everything, and M.2s were very tempting because it would get rid of all those cables. I looked online and it seemed like a pretty cool thing. The more i looked, the more i wanted it. I hadn't had this urge to buy something since i first built my PC. i caved pretty quickly and now I'm eagerly awaiting it.

I haven't downloaded that much since i built, but i want to move everything to the new SSD. Mainly, I got a free Windows 10 (from my college even though i graduated years ago.... shh, don't tell) and a very VERY cheap Microsoft Office (from my work HUP program thing) that i desperately want to bring over to the new SSD. I've looked online and i think it should be possible. Please let me know, just wanted to make sure if you guys know if it is.

Anyway, please tell me i didn't make a mistake, my fragile frame won't be able to handle it.

EDIT: Thank you all for your help! I'll do some more research on the stuff you all suggested.

    G-Sync question

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 01:51 PM PST

I'm building a 2070/9700k setup and the time has come to choose a monitor. Since I probably won't be getting stable 144fps on all games with this setup on 1440p, I'm wondering whether or not to buy a g-sync monitor as they're outrageously priced in my country ( and I can choose from 2 models only ).

In order to avoid tearing, can't I just lower the monitor's refresh rate? Let's say that I'm playing Battlefield V and get average 100 FPS. Wouldn't I be able to just set the monitor's refresh rate to 100 hz (and use adaptive sync?)

Need help for a school project

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 01:46 PM PST

I know this is a extremely STRANGE, strange request but if anybody could help me I thought it would be you guys.

So basically it's for a circuits unit. My group decided to take a simple 120mm case fan like this one and powering it using a solar panel by connecting the fan to a fan header to usb type A cable and the usb plugging directly into the panel using something like this

The questions I have are: • Is this even possible? • If so are the materials listed enough or correct? •If not is there anything I'd need to add? • The big question; what solar panel? I've seen a bunch and I'm really unsure what's what and if they have a USB port and things like that. Don't want to order something and get a giant 5 foot panel that's supposed to be sitting on a roof.

I know this is extremely strange and highly unusual but I needed the help and everybody in this community has always been helpful and friendly to me. If there's any subreddit better for me to post this in do tell and I'll be happy to provide any information I can.

Is an RTX 2070 GPU complete overkill for rendering on a 1080p monitor?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 02:19 PM PST

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/PlatinumPOS/saved/CtTq4D

So I'm planning on using this build to get into Blender / rendering work, and because of that I was completely sold on the 2070's concentration on Ray Tracing. Right now, I'm working on a 27" 1080p monitor . . . but that shouldn't matter for rendering, right? I'm mainly concerned with being able to build & render potentially complex environments and delving into animation. I believe the output resolution would be the biggest hurdle for a system (working in HD, but producing in 4K). I jumped for a new RTX 2070 card thinking it would "future-proof" my computer in case I decide to upgrade my monitor later on, but now I'm having second thoughts after seeing reports of RTX 2070 cards randomly dying, and I'm feeling like an idiot for jumping on a 1st Gen line of devices that I should have known could have problems, rather than going the safer route on something more proven and reliable like a GTX 1080.

Can anyone who knows better than me make me feel better about this decision? Or convince me to return the GPU (it's still being shipped) and get something more sensible? I started out so excited to have my hands on some new tech for the first time in a long time, but now I'm terrified of having spent $500 and watching my GPU burn out in two months.

I'm glad that I've purchased the parts for my first pc build when they were on sale...

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:04 AM PST

I've actually built my first budget pc few weeks ago and now that I look at the prices of these parts, they're quite higher (especially cpu, mobo and gpu) and I'm glad that I purchased them when they were low in price.

    cpu: ryzen 5 2600

gpu: xfx rx 580 gtr 8gb black edition

motherboard: Msi b450 a pro atx

storage: WD 1tb hdd and inland professional 120gb ssd

    ram: G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory

    psu: corsair cx550m semi-modular

case: fractal design focus g black mid-tower atx

    cost: $650 after tax

really gotta thank this subreddit for finding information in building process.

    First RGB Build finally done!

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 04:41 PM PST

Hello everyone! I don't want to drag this out too long, since most of these parts speak for themselves. I mainly built the PC with high FPS gaming in mind, with a little bit of streaming. Along with that, I needed something sort of small form factor because I live in a small apartment at my college, and wanted to be able to transport the PC around from time to time. This isn't my first time building a PC, but this is a first in the RGB world, and my oh my am I sold. I won't keep it in this Rainbow Puke config for long (Probably will do Blue and White for Liquid and C9) but I just wanted to show everything off real quick. If there are any question about why I chose a part, just feel free to comment! Thank you for viewing my build and Happy Holidays :)

The first part of my first build is done (I've bought all the part)!!

Thanks to this reddit and build a pc sales and everyone who has helped I think I've done really good job for my first build. I started with a budget of $1000 but through all the deals people helped me find I was able to get a better pc than the original one I planned and for only $834 ($809 once MIR comes in)! The prices for the parts now usually fluctuate around the $1050-$1100 range so I'm happy with how it turned out. How do you all think I did?

    Issues with Newegg?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:43 AM PST

I thought I may be alone in my issues, but checking the /r/Newegg subreddit, seems I'm not alone. I ordered 75% of my build through Amazon, and the other few parts from Newegg. Estimated delivery from Newegg was yesterday.

Everything arrived from Amazon a few days ago. My order through Newegg is still "packaging." The online chat support has a 1,000+ queue, and the contact by phone service is unavailable (great timing, Newegg). Clicking the "return items" button shows a hefty restocking fee, along with a $50 fee to ship the items back.

I understand it's the busy season, but this seems like craziness. I have no idea when the rest of my build will get here, and I'll be paying almost a quarter of the price of the parts if I try to return them.

Has anyone else experienced issues this bad? Any possible resolutions?

Your motherboard might need updating before it will work with your new CPU.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 04:28 AM PST

Putting this here as I came accross this when helping a mate build a PC this week, I've been building machines here and there for almost 20 years and this had me stumped!

You might need to update your motherboard's BIOS before it wil work with your new 9-series CPU.

We put the whole machine together (MSI Z370-A Pro + i5 9600k) and switched it on, everything started up but no display! No post, no debug LED's on the board, nada. After 2 hours of troubleshooting (swapping out RAM, reseating everything, swapping GPU's) and googling nothing was coming up regarding this issue.

Eventually we figured out that the board only supports the latest chips with a fairly recent BIOS update. A relatively easy process but it does require you have an older 8 sereis chip to do the update int he first place. Some Asus boards will let you update the bios with no CPU installed but for the most part you cant do a whole lot without some RAM and a CPU installed.

This is admittedly fairly basic but I'm sure there are a tonne of new builders out there that wouldnt even consider this option. Like I said, I've been building a lot and its probably just luck that I've never had this issue previously (or I had an older chip around and forgot about the problem). Anyhow, if your shiny new kit isnt starting up but also not giving you any beeps or errors, this could be it!

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 12:21 PM PST

I'm going to be building a new gaming rig here soon, I'm trying to finalize my parts list and have hit a snag. The motherboard I have chosen doesn't have wifi integrated into it. so my question is, what is my best option for wifi on my build? different board? Wifi expansion card? usb wifi adapter?

    PC Suggestions

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 02:27 PM PST

I'm looking to purchase a PC, just for general use! I have previously been using my laptop, but it is now at least a few years old and it's clear that it is getting slower so I want something to replace this of better quality. Any suggestions? I don't really have a price limit, but also I don't want to spend too much on it!

    Thanks for reading!

System won't boot into windows after change from NVIDIA to AMD Gpu

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 02:08 PM PST

As the title says. I have uninstalled all nvidia drivers, but when I put the vega 56 in it either doesn't give an output or will let me into the recovery mode, from which all options cause it to display no output or gives me the loading rings under the Asus logo.

The 1060 still works if I plug it back in.

I also have no integrated graphics (ryzen system).

    What do I do?

Quick Sata Port Question. In the middle of a build right now.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 04:44 PM PST

I'm in the middle of building my first pc. I have tomahawk b450 mobo. Realizing I need 3 sata hookups: CD drive, ssd, and hard drive. However I only see two sata slots on the mobo.

Is there another port I'm not seeing? Does a sata cord with two hookups exist?

    How do I do this?
