Posted: 28 Nov 2018 03:58 PM PST This is in our master bedroom closet. Originally we had to splice the server line coming in to another room, and setup the Google Fiber box there. After hours of troubleshooting, finally figured out how to replace the Google Fiber box with a UniFi Security Gateway, so now we don't have to do that. Since it still routes to that room, I have an ethernet cable coming from the top of the wall plate to the bottom so that it routes back to the closet. Anyways, I see folks on HomeLab who have a small rack setup, and mounted on the wall. How can I do that? Or should I try and stuff all of this in the small door (heat issues worry me). Or should I try and put another ethernet wall plate at the top so at least this nest is on the top shelve where nobody cares? There is also an Access Point on the top shelf. Lastly, can I get rid of those non-ethernet cables? I have no idea what they are. I know the coax is for cable, which I haven't used in 10 years nor do I know anyone who has cable service. Also don't know what those red or yellow cables are either. [link] [comments] |
Best way to transfer files over network? (Local only) Posted: 28 Nov 2018 03:14 PM PST I'm spending more and more time on my laptop vs my PC. Pretty soon I'm going to remove my keyboard/monitor set up from the PC and just use it as a media server/file server which I will access through teamviewer on my laptop. One thing im struggling with though, what is the best method to transfer files over the network? This is mostly to move large downloaded files from the PC to my laptop. Right now i'm using windows sharing settings to put it on the network, but i'm concerned about its security / would also like to access it from a linux VM. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
How to know if i can get vdsl if my isp refuses to tell me Posted: 28 Nov 2018 08:46 AM PST Hello, I'm totally new to networking but ive done some research and so far i know that adsl and vdsl both use dsl but i havent understood whats the actual technology difference between them. How can i know if my property is capable of vdsl if im currently on adsl2, also the crossbox node is next to my garden. And if it's capable how can i upgrade from adsl to vdsl because my isp isnt responding to me. Also i cant really switch isps because this is the only one that even services me [link] [comments] |

Upgraded from Comcast 100Mbps to RCN 330Mbps. Wifi speeds are all still around 80 though. Normal? Posted: 28 Nov 2018 02:40 PM PST I got this Netgear C7000 AC1900 modem/router: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZUPOF7Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Random googling implies that it may be normal to have slower speeds on wifi, but if I could do better with a better router, I might return this one. [link] [comments] |
Can I connect a switch to ethernet drop behind my TV? Posted: 28 Nov 2018 02:22 PM PST I set up a Ubiquiti set up a few years ago, and trying to determine how to expand - specifically for all the devices behind my main TV. My current setup:
All I have hardwired behind my main TV is the AP. My question is, can I plug a switch in to that terminal to expand how many devices I can hard wire? I'd ideally want the AP, AVR, Android Shield TV... If this is not the best set up, how else would I accomplish this, as all of my rooms are wired up via the patch panel already (new construction) Thanks [link] [comments] |
New (to me) house with incomplete Ethernet drops Posted: 28 Nov 2018 08:12 PM PST Hi guys Just bought a home and noticed phone jacks everywhere - this is a 2015 build so I was a bit confused so pulled one of and there was a disconnected cat5e cable behind it. In fact most of them are like that. They all terminate in the article in a bunch without any connections to anything. The home does have a att fiber connect and there is a couple of cables in the attic that are spliced together . The only Ethernet port in the home is the one in the home office where the router/modem hybrid is. One Ethernet cable connects and we have internet via WiFi. There is an exterior att box with some connections in it but not much. The goal - get the house wired with Ethernet ports and place the modem somewhere and have the netgear orbi on a wired backhaul. Have the devices that can hardline do so via Ethernet and keep the WiFi for the portable devices . I have pix but trying to figure out how to post them here (on mobile) [link] [comments] |
Asus RT-AC66U dropping signal because of broken antenna? Posted: 28 Nov 2018 04:26 PM PST Not really sure if this is the place to ask this so sorry in advance. One of my antennas broke off around 3 weeks ago and I'm not completely sure if it's the reason for my problems. Would having 2 antennas instead of 3 really cause me to drop signal? Recently my internet has shut off and when I look at my router the 2.4ghz light is off. Basically anything connected to the 2.4ghz band and anything that is wired with an ethernet is unable to use internet. The only way to fix this is to just unplug the router for 30 seconds and plug it back in. It usually works fine then but this seems to randomly happen. Basically I am just wondering if this is a problem with the router itself or the fact that I only have 2 antennas vs 3. Edit: Not sure if this matters but there is one antenna to the left and one to the right with the middle one being the one that is broken. [link] [comments] |
Home network intermittent issues and troubleshooting Posted: 28 Nov 2018 04:19 PM PST So I don't know where I'm going wrong with my home network, but it seems that somewhere I'm either doing something wrong or don't know what I'm looking for when the problems I have crop up. I have a 300/20mbps service from my ISP that seems to be fairly stable. Here's a crude drawing of my network layout for clarity. Issues I'm having: 1: Full system fail. No devices of any kind can connect for a period of time, mode enters indicates white light status (all ok) but cannot be accessed. IP addresses either fail to be obtained at all or indicate far out of range (example TV is typically assigned 10.0.0.63 (I LABELLED THIS WRONG ON THE DRAWING) through reserved DHCP, sometimes will show connection failure but receives an address such as 163.25.75.203, etc) 2: When connecting to WiFi the devices sometimes hop on/hop off in short 5-10 second intervals, repeatedly, until rebooting the phone/laptop. Tends to hop off when it says "obtaining IP address" 3: TV network extremely spotty even directly connected, takes up to 10 minutes after power-on to detect network and sometimes fails outright. Stuttering during shows sometimes happens. Other days have no issues. Speedtest.net or fast.com show no issues when tested on desktop or gaming PC's while netflix on the TV is acting up. (so it seems its not a problem with network connection as a whole) Things I have tried 1: Checked cables, most importantly tried testing the primary in-wall cable from modem to router. I found it was wired as 568A to the jack in the upstairs and 568B in the basement jack. I re-terminated the basement jack to 568A. I have a basic 8-pin tester/remote that shows no issues but it's nothing fancy just continuity test. 2: Swapped cables from one device to another, bypassed the switch, bypassed in-wall runs with long patch cables, tried testing directly from main drop to PC and it worked well but my problems are not constant so it could have been luck 3: Disconnected all devices and tried testing while adding one at a time back to the switch. 4: Moved feed line from modem from Port 1 to Port 8 on the switch Due to the intermittent nature of the problems and my inexperience I don't know how to narrow it down. My gut feeling is an issue with the TPLink router acting up and breaking my internal subnet IP configurations at random intervals. I feel like I have less issues when it is fully disconnected but I lose wifi signal to the basement and garage entirely so I don't like leaving it off for lengthy periods of time. Sometimes the Arris modem needs to be rebooted before service comes back online after unplugging and reconnecting different components, sometimes it will just start working on its own with no input from myself, and sometimes the downstairs section of my network will fail while the upstairs continues to work. I'm looking into replacing my main cat5e drop with a small bundle of cat6 but it's a pretty significant project to this and I'm not sure if my cable is bad. I doubt I have an interference problem because there is only one or two wall outlets with nothing plugged in on the wall that cable drops down inside. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2018 05:00 AM PST I currently have the TP-Link TD-W8970 300Mbps Wireless N Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router, since 2014. The wifi has recently started acting weird and although the router has an ADSL signal, nothing loads. I had purchased a TL-WR940N to use as a wireless repeater or an access point, depending on whether or not I can actually run an ethernet cable to it. I have thought about disabling the wifi on the TD-W8970 and connecting the TL-WR940N and using it for wifi. Or buying a new ADSL router or modem. Any recommendations? I live in an apartment with crowded wifi and running cables is not very easy. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2018 03:46 PM PST Networking newcomer here, I just bought a netgear r8000 and was reading that upnp is not recommended. So I started researching port forwarding. The thing is, my wife and I both play the same games together and it seems it causes one or the other to disconnect. The threads I was reading were a few years old. Does this still happen with todays technology? And if so how can I prevent it from happening? Is upnp really that bad? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2018 07:07 PM PST While looking through the tutorials on setting my Arris NVG589 to be ready for bridge mode and eventually set the R6250 for port-forwarding and my main source I came across that option under the wireless settings tab. I was wondering if that was an option for establishing it, or something to go around and follow along with the basics? It also has the option of setting it as the "Wireless AP" under the same tab, I'm totally new to these settings so I'm unsure if either are needed or a better solution for this? [link] [comments] |

Schrodinger's Internet Connection Posted: 28 Nov 2018 06:33 PM PST Hello everybody! Since I set up my ER-X my Windows 10 PC has been connected via ethernet. In the network & internet settings infolet at the bottom right it shows "Network 4: No Internet". This was strange because I have been using the internet without problems (until now). A minute ago, I tried to download an app off of Windows Store and it kicked back "You will need internet for this" even though I used the internet to navigate there and am currently posting to reddit. What could be the issue here? [link] [comments] |
Wireless cams with limited wifi ? Posted: 28 Nov 2018 06:20 PM PST I have a 4 acre property and my wifi rang isn't enough for where I want to put my cams. Is there a way around this ? If I was able to connect one cam to my wifi then spread the others out would each camera increase the WiFi range ? Probably not I'm guessing. I don't care about remote viewing I just don't want to wire 500ft per camera to my DVR. Any other suggestions thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2018 06:16 PM PST I have been dealing with this same bullshit ever since I switched to WOW!'s 1gig Coax plan. I am suppose to get 1000 down and 50 up, but it being coax I never really get past 800. I've had times where my upload slows to less than 1/5 of it's advertised speed, but still craps when doing things like streaming. 10mbps should be able to handle a 3000kbps, but no. It buffers like the dickens. I've done several tests, speedtest.net, WOW!'s speedtest.net, testmy.net, here are a few links I suppose. Right now: https://testmy.net/1yLf5MpW0.png https://www.speedtest.net/result/7837995455.png http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/42447654 When it's bad: https://www.speedtest.net/result/7832421701.png This went on for 4 hours. I am directly linked to my modem, and here are the parts that deal with the connection: Arris CM8200A Docsis 3.1 Cat 7 ethernet Asrock x370 taichi Mobo I've had 5 guys come to my place with no answer. I get insane bloat buffer on dslreports in excess of 100's of MS. This is my first post here, I really have tried looking all around for answers but I think I need personalized help. If there is any information that I can supplement please let me know. My provider is WOW! My modem is an Arris Touchstone CM8200A Docsis 3.1 I have a cat 7 ethernet cord hooked directly to an Asrock x370 Taichi Motherboard. Thank you for your trouble. [link] [comments] |
Help with physically stick Alcatel Lucent ONT Posted: 28 Nov 2018 05:43 PM PST I have a (I think) G240G-A for AT&T fiber that's mounted on a wall bracket inside my closet. I can't get it off the mount that's screwed into the punch out box. Unit wiggles a bit left to right diagonal but does not release from the backer panel- I found the manual online and unfortunately the bracket is not shown in either the AL or Nokia version of the ONT. Install tech did a shit job while I was out and have the Pace 5268 literally wedged in place under some coax. Looks similar to this unit but no make model etc: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30358349-New-ONT-made-for-both-Indoor-Outdoor-Use [link] [comments] |

Trying to find a specialty PoE Switch Posted: 28 Nov 2018 01:41 PM PST Hello, Looking for a PoE Switch that has 10+ Powered Switches and uses a computer style power plug. Has to be either (LxWxH) 9.5" x 4" x 4" ~OR~ 7.5" x 7.5" x 4" Max - Smaller will work. Would also be able to work with 2 8 port PoEs that would fit within those measurements, or 3 4 port PoEs. Best option is the computer power plug, if not possible a way to use 1 brick to power 2 or 3 smaller PoEs as there is not enough room for 3 PoE and 3 Bricks, or 2 and 2. EX: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FR42VYH (but it is just a little over 1 inch to wide. We are trying to fit these all into a Octagon that measures 5" on each side, and 4" deep. Edge to edge is 12" but the lip is approx 10 inches (one side is sealed off, the opposite side has a door) The PoE does need to supply Power, and not be a gigabit switch. We are using this to power 9 cameras. [link] [comments] |
Can I use my own WiFi router with the provided Xfinity modem? Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:27 AM PST I understand that the rental unit provided by Xfinity is garbage. I am first-hand witness of the WiFi router been spotty when used from one floor to another. I followed the conversation thread on this thread, but found that after looking at some of the recommendations, and doing my research, I can't afford the router+modem upgrade all in one go (I'm a student). My long term goal is to swap the Xfinity all-in-one (the one I have is an Xfinity branded version of this, I think), with the ASUS CM-16, and the ASUS RT-ACRH13. Is there a chance that for the time-being, I upgrade my WiFi router by plugging it into the Xfinity modem ethernet port and then later swap the modem a month or two later? Would this create two wifi connections? (One from the Xfinity router and one with my new one?) Is it sub-optimal because of the Xfinity modem? My intention is to only improve network reach/strength as of now, as it seems that the provided Xfinity modem has a garbage router in-built with it, and going to the floor above has WiFi speeds drop from 100Mbps to under 6Mbps. If there is an alternative modem/router recommendation for a student trying to get the best out of a combo of ~$100-$120, that would help as well. [link] [comments] |
Do I need any additional components besides the Ubiquiti AC Lite WAP? Posted: 28 Nov 2018 04:56 PM PST I have an edgerouter-x and my apartment's wifi is so inconsistent that I am contemplating buying a WAP. Do I only need the Ubiquiti WAP or do I also need the cloudkey? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2018 08:12 AM PST Just moved into a new townhome. Previous owners said that the outlets in the images below connect, but they are for AT&T Uverse. I'm currently signed on with Spectrum. The outlets below for some reason do not connect: Outlet located downstairs near the working coaxial cable: https://i.imgur.com/wOcwy1P.png Outlet that goes through the wall to the upstairs room: https://i.imgur.com/g3VGnyN.png Spectrum technician came by and tested that line with a tool (wasn't connecting), then went out to the AT&T box and changed something, but I didn't get a chance to see what he changed. Here's the picture of this panel: https://i.imgur.com/ctVI3Yf.jpg Then he tested those Ethernet outlets again after doing something in the panel, and no dice. He mentioned that there's another panel which may be of use that is hidden behind the Security Torx screw in that last picture. He said that of course he isn't able to touch it, but I am wondering if there may be something in there that I can connect or disconnect to get that Ethernet outlet to work. As seen in the last picture, there's an unplugged Ethernet cable, but I have already tried plugging that back in and tested the outlet again with no results. Does anyone know if that panel that is hidden behind the Security Torx screw is something that would be of use to poke into? I've ordered a cheap set of Torx tools that will open it, but I'll send it back to Amazon before using it if everyone says there's nothing of use in there. Would there be any other reason why that Ethernet outlet from downstairs does not work when going upstairs? I've went around every room to see if there's another outlet, I even opened up the outlet covers that were completely solid to see what was behind them, I was only able to find just a bunch of landline connections. How to get a wired connection in a separate room from the router. Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:54 AM PST Sorry if some of the questions I'm asking are stupid. I don't know much about networks/routers. Right now my router is in the living room, while my PC and PS4 is in my bedroom. How can I get a connection as good as a normal wired connection without setting up a wire all the way from the living room to my bedroom. I've tried using a powerline connection in the past but it's even slower than wireless. Also would it be somehow possible to install 2 routers with the same broadband, in different locations? I also read about the Google Wifi, but I don't actually know how it works exactly. Is it just a device that extends and improves your wireless connection? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
"Mesh" packages vs 2x Asus AIMesh Routers Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:43 AM PST Looking at the "mesh" setups and AImesh now that my Asus AP has died. Current setup: 1) Asus N66R N900 2x2 router 2) Asus AC56 AP 3) 50mb cable modem AP and router connected by ~100ft CAT 5 from one end of the house laterally to the other laterally, with both nodes are on the main floor. House: 2 floor house + basement. 20ft x 65ft floors. Cable modem more or less needs to be at one end of the house. Main A/V is near cable modem with an AppleTV 4k wired. Office is on 2nd floor on the other end of the house. Without the AP, the wifi is spotty on the far side of the house and office. The 5ghz and 2.4ghz connections will drop, but can do "2-bars" 75% of the time. The Asus AP unit seems to be having a memory failure as it won't hold a config, which is why I'm looking Goals: 1) Wifi coverage / single SSID / seamless roaming handoffs 2) minimize network monopolization when the kids are flipping through Netflix 3) No drops 4) I'd like an Ethernet outlet in the office for the NAS / data storage device. I do not need outright speed, just seamless connectivity. So... In looking at the mesh setups the Orbi units looks like a homerun as long as the nodes have solid network connection. A three AC2200 setup is $270 or $199 for the AC3000 two unit. Velop seems similar, but has better backbone management and more expensive. Eero and a few others are lacking Ethernet satellites. What looks to be a good option is the $179 for two Asus RT-AC68U Routers over AImesh. AImesh seems testy to setup, but will get me what I want otherwise. [link] [comments] |
Why does my WiFi work, but not my Ethernet? Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:29 AM PST I have Google Fiber. When I use Ethernet on my PC or Xbox, it disconnects often, and sometimes doesn't even connect. Both devices say I am not connected to the internet, but my Wi-Fi still works. When I connect my Xbox to Wi-Fi, I don't have any problems other than it being slow sometimes. I've tried different Ethernet cables. Two different cat5e cables, a cat5 and a cat6. None of them have fixed anything. Anyone know what I can do to fix it? [link] [comments] |
