Buy new laptop now or wait til 2019

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:05 AM PST

I'm in the market for a laptop and have a few in mind. While I was researching reviews, I saw a couple of youtube reviewers suggest not buying a laptop if you are looking at higher end equipment as the new 20 series GPUs will be showcased at CES in Jan. This supposedly will reduce current prices drastically early next year.

What is everyone's thoughts on this? =

    Should I avoid the i7 8750h?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 04:16 AM PST

I want to get a Dell G3 with the gtx 1050 TI. I've read that the i7 8750h throttles, so is that actually so bad (in comparison to the i5 8300h) that I should avoid it at all costs? Because I only find the gtx 1050 TI together with the i7.

I would've bought that laptop with the 1050 ti already, the only reason I haven't yet is because I'm afraid the i5 is the better option for the G3, and I can't find a combination for the i5 + 1050 TI

    Recommend A Laptop; $2k Budget

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 10:29 AM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $2,000 * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Not exactly sure what this means but I want good battery life and the specifications that I require. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Very. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows 10 Pro * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15.4 inches or less * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I will be doing a lot of cryptography, map editing. The only games I would ever run on this would be D2:LOD if I was to run any games at all. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** N/A * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I do not want a LED Keeb. I want reliable build quality. I would like touch screen. No FPR required. No optical drive required. At least two USB ports are required and some kind of port to hook up a monitor. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I am coming from a Surface Pro III. I am wanting to replace it because it is lacking processing power needed for school and I cannot open it to change the thermal compound easily. Here are my requirements: 2560x1440 screen, Bezel-free if possible 8GB of RAM 256 SSD Low end dedicated GPU Low end i7 CPU Thinness and the ability to stay cool is important.

Xps 13 problem charging laptop when usb c hub connected

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 01:24 PM PST

Hi all! I just recently purchased a XPS 13 9370 and it works great, however, I just noticed an issue today. When I have a usb-c hub connected to my computer, then I try to plug my laptop charger into another port, the computer states that the charger is plugged in but not charging. Once I unplug the hub and try to plug my charger in again it works correctly. The specific hub I purchased was the James Donkey usb-c hub on Amazon. I was wondering if anyone else had this issue and if it's just this specific hub or some other issue. Thank you!

Gaming laptops don't make any sense - change my mind!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 12:28 PM PST

This all is just from my own experience. I was in the market for a new gaming laptop. Bought a total of 4 laptops and ended up returning them (thanks to the vendor for being so generous). The laptops I purchased were Asus ROG Hero II, MSI GP63, HP Omen 15 and Acer Nitro5. All of these had their own problems. I will give my own points, according to my own personal experience.

    1. Money: to me, gaming on a laptop is just a waste of money. You will never get the same performance that you can get from a desktop that costs the same.
    2. Portability: Yes, you get the said portability from a laptop. But would never get the same portability from a gaming laptop than from a light and thin laptop. Ever held a Asus Zenbook or Dell XPS? Compare that to Alienware VS Predator (lol).
    3. New gaming laptops are getting thin and light: yes they are but we are also getting more powerful cpus and gpus which means these powerful units produce more heat and thin laptops cannot really keep them as cool as a desktop can. Having a cooling issue on your desktop, get more fans or get an AIO for CPU. Problem solved. But if its on a laptop, you need to change the whole laptop.
    4. Durability: due to running at high temps, the lifespan of your gpu and cpu reduces. Yes, new laptops are doing a good job at cooling but still they get really hot that some would throttle to cope with the heat issue.
    5. Maintenance: if something breaks, its really expensive to replace on a laptop. Desktop gives you more options and you do not need a technician to do that for you. The ROG Hero II was running the fans at max speeds when gaming. The fans were so damn loud that I started questioning the longevity of the fans. The fan on your desktop broke? Buy a new one for 10 bucks and you are good to go. Not the same for a laptop.

So, after all this, I built a new desktop and bought a light, thin and cheap laptop for the same price as the ROG Hero II. Yes, I am not getting All in One package but I would rather have 2 systems than one so that if one breaks, I still would have a backup machine.

This is just my opinion. What do you guys think? Do let me know :)

Can an HP Notebook handle recording/publishing music?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:55 AM PST

    Hello,

I'm trying to record and publish music on my HP Notebook, which has an Intel Core i5. I was already doing this using Audacity, but recently the laptop crashed, and the only way to get it to function again was to wipe it clean and re-install Windows 10. At the time of it crashing, I had a lot of unnecessary files and bloatware on the laptop. This time around I cleaned a lot of the bloatware off of it, which I hadn't done before. Now it seems to be running fine, with some occasional lag.

My question is, is it destined to crash again if I try to start recording again? I'm thinking of using Soundbridge to record and publish this time. I also plan on upgrading my recording equipment, (new interface, etc.) but I can't really afford to get both new gear and a new PC, so I'd rather just bite the bullet and get a better PC now and put off the new gear if this one simply can't handle what I'm trying to do.

Also, are there any ways to lessen the load on the PC while recording? I plan on strictly limiting how many files are on the computer, etc., but should I look into getting an external drive or anything like that?

Thanks for any help you can give!

    About Overpowered lineup from Walmart....

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:52 AM PST

This is a repost coming from r/suggestalaptop

So I am considering buying this

    https://www.walmart.com/ip/OVERPOWERED-Gaming-Laptop-15-144Hz-Intel-i5-8300H-NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1050-Mechanical-LED-Keyboard-128-SSD-1TB-HDD-8GB-RAM-Windows-10/682079574

edit: league is the only game I will probably ever on this laptop I get it. I have a 1080ti pc for other games. So I care a lot about portability and the 144hz screen and strong cpu

Yes, I know how it sounds, this laptop hasn't exactly received too many praises.

However, my main usage of a laptop right now is (1) play some league of legends, which is great on a laptop with 144hz screen and doesn't too much gpu power which a 1050 definitely suffices. (2)school work like machine learning programming tasks which requires a strong cpu and I think this laptop has a decent cpu as well.

I think this laptop kinda matches what I want, do you guys think I should get it

Stuck Between the y530 and y730

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:44 AM PST

Hi I found a solid coupon code for both the y730 and y530. I'm basically spending around 1,100 for either one. There are a few differences in them but I need an input from someone that has experience in certain laptops.

So these are the real important differences.

    Y530 - 144hz / GTX 1060 / Plastic Chassis

    Y730 - 60hz / 1050Ti / Aluminum Chassis / RGB lighting / Thunderbolt port / More Ports

Im leaning towards the y530 but Im unsure about the longevity for it compared to the y730.

Should I wait or buy? XPS 9370 i5 8gb FHD

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:18 AM PST

I'm planning on buying a 9370 i5 8gb model. Is this the wrong time to buy one because 2019 is just around the corner. Any chances of a design or processor update to the XPS? Should I wait or pull the trigger, considering that the new gen processors are also out. Will 8gb Ram be good enough for the next 3 years?

I have lots of gopro videos to process. Costco has laptops on sale can you help me pick one on my list.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:07 AM PST

    Hello,

I haven't bought a computer in years so I'm a little out of touch. Perhaps you fine people can help me. This computer will be used work (MS office and such) and video editing. I'm a console gamer so gaming ability on this is a non issue.

    I'm looking to spend $500-600.

So far I've narrowed the choices down to two.

    Lenovo Flex 5 15 2-in-1 Touchscreen Laptop - Intel Core i5 - GeForce MX130 - 1080p - Active Stylus - $600.

    -OR-

    HP 17.3" Touchscreen Laptop - Intel Core i5 - 2GB AMD Graphics - $600

    What do you think?

How to clean / deodorize a used laptop? WEED. SO MUCH WEED.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 09:54 AM PST

I got what I thought was a good deal on a used laptop. On the drive back I noticed it smelled of weed. I thought I'd just have to air it out for awhile and it would be good to go.

When I got home, I could see the air intake vents were covered in... resin? Weed-tar? I cracked the case and in a couple of places it was so bad it looked like spilled / dried cola.

I started cleaning it, but I don't want to damage anything. Is it safe to clean e.g. PCBs and electrical components with 91% alcohol?

Once I've cleaned what I can, I'm pretty sure this thing will still smell like a reggae concert. Is there a sure-fire way to deodorize it? I'm wondering if products used to deodorize rental cars and hotel rooms could be used in this case.

    ASUS or Lenovo?!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 08:47 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

No more than $950 and US

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

2-1 is ideal but prioritizing specs

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not very important.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows 100%

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15.6 heavily preferred

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Possibly video editing. Light gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    LoL

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Pretty display is preferred. Back-lit keyboard would be beautiful.

Mainly going to be used for school, but side hobbies like photo/video editing and light gaming would be done here and there. I have a gaming desktop so I'm not too worried about games on here whatsoever. Thank you for your help in advance!

~$700 budget, need a durable laptop for university that can also function as a good gaming laptop/music production

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 08:17 AM PST

My last dell Inspiron's hinges slowly warped and broke off after traveling a lot with it. I play lots of triple A titles and stuff so I'd need a competent GPU. My old laptop had the GTX 960 but I couldn't play subnautica and some other stuff so I'm looking for a significant upgrade in that department as well. Multiple suggestions welcome, thanks!

As well, what's the best option for upgrading the mechanical drive to SSD? Are there larger and better m.2 SSD options as well?
