Can some apps NOT adhere to my theming by default?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:56 AM PST

I prefer a dark theme for my distro (I've done this on XFCE on one machine and MATE on another), but that makes some apps like LibreOffice and PlayonLinux hard to look at. LibreOffice can somewhat be fixed with an icon pack like Oxygen but not every app comes with that sort of fix. I don't know the exact terminology for this but I'm asking if there's a setting somewhere that would let me have the dark theme for some apps but not have that extend to others. I love the idea of universal theming but the implementation isn't as I'd like.

I should mention both envs are running on Ubuntu 18.04.

Two Independent Ubuntu Installations - What's The Best Way?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:50 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I currently have two independent *buntu installations on two separate hard drives. I use my second install for development and testing purposes for the most part. However, booting into it and doing any updates messes with Grub every time. What's the best way to keep this from happening?

    Thanks in advance!

How do I make ncmpcpp display all albums as a list instead of per album artist?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 09:12 AM PST

Change how "pacman -Ss..." displays results.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 02:56 PM PST

I'm running Manjaro 4.19.4-1 and the way that pacman lists results is tough for me to scan through. It lists the package name, newline, then the description. This is tougher to scan through than, say, "apt-cache search" which lists both on the same line, especially when there's a really long list of results. Is there a way to change how the search displays results? Thanks.

    New Ubuntu install...network won't connect

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 02:44 PM PST

I've only had some light Ubuntu experience in the past. I'm primarily a Mac user, but do have CLI chops, where necessary.

I'm repurposing an HP Pavillion 300-220 Mini Desktop and just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS.

Everything went fine during install. I'm up and running, but I can't get network access. I'm plugged directly into my Unifi switch, and it just says "Connection failed...Activation of network connection failed". No sight of the HP in my Unifi controller client table, either.

I see various threads on the Ubuntu forums with steps that require wifi access (apt install commands in the terminal), but that's not working either. Just says "No Wifi Adapter Found". I'm guessing that's because there's various other steps necessary to get the HP's onboard card working with Ubuntu.

I don't care about getting wifi working, as this machine will be in my rack and always hardwired. But I'm happy to go down that road if it's necessary to get the eth working.

    Here's my details panel:

    Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS Memory: 1.8G Processor: Intel Celeron(R) 3205U @ 1.9Ghz x2 Graphics: Intel Broadwell GT1 GNOME: 3.28.2 OS Type: 64-bit Disk: 31.4 GB

Happy to provide whatever terminal outputs that are helpful.

    Thanks.

EDIT: I've rebooted from the USB drive and I'm noticing that the installer doesn't have internet access, either. I also forgot to mention that I did a minimal install the first time around. I'm wondering if that's the issue? But it seems like I should have ethernet connectivity in the installer itself. Is there anyway around this?

I want to install Windows on my extra HDD, advice needed.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 12:21 PM PST

I replaced my laptop's disc drive with an Ultrabay HDD caddy, now I have an extra HDD and I want to install Windows on one of its partitions and use the other for storage, but I have some questions:

    1. I have heard many horror stories of Windows not playing well with Linux when dual booting, should I take any precautions considering that both OS are in different hard drives?

    2. How do I make a Windows installation USB drive? I have a Windows key under the laptop's battery, can I use it somehow?

    3. How much space should I reserve for the Windows partition? The software I want to install on it will probably take less than 10GB, at most.

Are every single Linux distros are secure? How can I know whether a specific distro is secure or not?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:13 AM PST

    I'm a complete Linux noob.

Everyone say Linux is secure, but mostly, they only talk about that since the Linux user group is much smaller than other OS such as MS Windows, makes more sense to target Windows users and so on.

For commercial/enterprise distros such as Ubuntu, RedHat, and OpenSUSE, they are backed with a real company, looks legit to me.

But what about those non-commercial/community distros? From what I know, most of their developers are volunteered, lots of people monitoring for issues and patching vulnerabilities. Even though, how can we know those distros are secure to use?

Thank you in advance for answering my noob question.

Why are these commands not equal? (Bash Scripting)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 07:27 AM PST

Hey guys, I'm trying to write a script to sync some files between some different environments, including into a docker container.

    What I normally do is

    ssh root@XXX.XX.XXX.XX"

    then run

    rsync -avPrz -e 'ssh -p XXXXX' --exclude "." /var/www/APP/ root@0.0.0.0:/var/www/APP/

However now I'm trying to automate things a bit more and hoping I can get it down to just one command I can run from the first box, but it doesn't appear to work. When I run

    ssh root@XXX.XX.XXX.XX "rsync -avPrz -e 'ssh -p XXXXX' --exclude "." /var/www/APP/ root@0.0.0.0:/var/www/APP/"

It seems to be copying the entire filetree from root into the directory! What gives, why does this work so differently?

Are on-disk structures like inodes, datablocks etc. simply an abstraction?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 11:01 AM PST

I'm reading about file-systems in OS and specifically about Unix-like file systems(the book I'm referring to is Three Easy Pieces by Remzi H.). The book discusses the 'on disk-structures' which are used for developing the file system such as the superblock, inodes, bitmaps and datablocks. However, a previous chapter (and my previous knowledge) states that the disk simply consists of regions of sectors placed within many tracks on a circular surface. These sectors are where persistent data is stored. Are inodes and the other structures simply an abstraction layer at which the OS interacts with the disk?

Trying to install Kubuntu from flash drive for first time

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 09:49 AM PST

I have installed a few distros before with no issues at all but it has always been by burning the image to disk and then booting from it. I am trying to install on an ASUS laptop with no optical drive so USB drive is my only option. I used unetbootin to create the bootable drive. That seemed to work properly, but when I boot from it the laptop just says no operating system found instead of starting the install process. I feel like the USB drive isn't being set up properly. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Help me choose a distro for a pretty weak computer.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 12:21 AM PST

For my personal computer I'm using Ubuntu 18.10 and am very happy with it. But I have an old computer which I want to get in usable shape, it's currently running (if you could call it that) windows 7. It has 2GB of RAM, and some kind of core 2 duo. My main use for it will be light work in libreoffice writer.

ddrescue unable to copy a disk past 5% rescued, even after days of running?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 02:43 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm using gddrescue to image a number of HDDs that have bad sectors. Out of approximately 6 HDDs, they've all gone smoothly other than this one HDD.

Gddrescue just fails to image the disk. I've run it a few times on the same disk, where each run was left for around 24 hours to complete before i would interrupt the process. Each and every time, ddrescue was only able to recover approximately 5% of the disk. It's only a 160GB disk, so 5% is ~8GB.

I run ddrescue with the -n switch to start and then i run it again with the -r3 switch. At this point, if the drive is not 100% rescued, i make a copy of the image and then run ddrescue with an -r5 switch to attempt to squeeze the last bit of data out of it.

After running the -n and then the -r3 on this particular drive. DDrescue tells me that the entire disk other than the 5% copied are bad-sectors (152GB of bad-sectors) and the read errors are in the billions.

Interestingly, if i mount the drive and navigate to the videos section in a user folder, i can load and play a 4GB file or load a number of images that weren't copied by ddrescue.

What might be happening and how can i resolve this?

    Thanks

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 07:28 AM PST

I know Ive had similar issues before with other files like this but I edited the source to use the files I had at the time but Im having issues finding that in this source.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Copy sound from right input channel to the right one

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 03:33 AM PST

I am using a stereo microphone and the problem is that it's not working as expected: while recording, left channel gives me a lot of noise and the right one records just fine. I've confirmed that my mic is broken, not the PC, but I've found a way to ignore this problem on Windows: using Equalizer APO, I'm muting the left channel altogether and then copy a signal from right to left to at least create an illusion of stereo. This way I don't have to edit my audio clips when recording AND not experience voice chat problems in some games which, apparently, only listen to a sound from the left channel. On Ubuntu, though, I've only found a way to mute one channel by using PulseAudio Volume Control, but not copy from one to another. So, is there even a way to do so?

    Edit: grammar

    Good resources for learning more?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 06:48 AM PST

I've always been pretty tech savvy, but I'm looking for some good resources on how to get better. I grew up exclusively using a Windows environment (I'm 36 now). I messed around with Ubuntu during college, but never ventured away from the GUI. About 10-15 years ago I made the switch to a Mac, and have very recently started messing around with a Raspberry Pi. Over the years I've had to install things like Docker, Python, Homebrew, and various other things that required using the Terminal on my Mac. I'm to a point where I'm able to fumble my way around things, and I can somewhat easily make my way through guides that require using various commands in the Terminal or via SSHing into my Pi.

Anyway, with that bit of rambling out of the way, I'm looking for a way to get better. I want to be able to figure out how to do various troubleshooting and fixes on my own, without relying on Google to give me step-by-step directions on things. When I was a kid, I would go out and try to find physical books on things like the Windows environment and PC building to increase my knowledge. While I'm sure I could do that for this as well, I'm wondering if there are better resources out there. I've always been someone who learns best by actually doing what it is I'm trying to learn. Are there any interactive ways of learning more about unix/linux environments and how to do things in them?

Thanks in advance to anyone who has taken the time to read my overly long post and offer some suggestions.
