Posted: 27 Nov 2018 11:46 AM PST I've been a fan of Ubiquiti for a few years not. I've had an edgerouter for 3 years or so with 100% uptime. Along with a wireless N AP. Never had to reboot. Since I've been out of the market for so long I wonder if anything more reliable has come out since. I'm particularly looking for something I would be able to deploy in a residential ISP environment. Not looking for any special features. Just affordable, reliable, and remote manageable. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
r/whatisthisthing, but for my router Posted: 27 Nov 2018 07:29 PM PST Hi, As mentioned in my title, I'm a little lost as to what this router is. There is no writing on it, I assume it's a variant of the Airport Extreme but I was wondering if anyone recognizes the specific model. The reason I want this is because I'm looking for a new router with equivalent or better specs (plus a gigabit ethernet/lan port) for 30$, and I'm not sure what I should be looking for. Thanks! rt68u merlin - remotely adding torrents to download master? Posted: 27 Nov 2018 05:53 PM PST Is there a way to remotely add torrents to download master of RT68u? It would be nice to set torrents to download from my phone instead of turning on my computer. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Nov 2018 08:16 PM PST Okay, so I just installed a pair of MOCA adapters in my home and I seem to be having issues, and I think it may be due to my setup of it. My issue is that in the second adapter (the one connecting to my devices) I'm only getting 30-40mbps down. I'm with Spectrum and pay for 100mbps. My moca set up goes like this ISP > POE Filter > 3 Way Coax Splitter (living room, bedroom 1, bedroom 2) > Living Room Coax > MOCA Adapter 1 > Internal port on router > Cable Modem coax connected to coax out on MOCA 1 > Ethernet from modem to router Bedroom 1 Coax > MOCA Adapter 2 > Unmanaged Ethernet Switch > Devices Should I be using a splitter from the living room coax and have different lines going to the cable modem and MOCA adapter 1? How good is OpenWRT as firewall? Posted: 27 Nov 2018 04:16 PM PST I have a smallish home network for a family of 3. No special use-cases like VPN from outside. I plan to block all incoming connections. For my case, would OpenWRT firewall sufficient? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Nov 2018 08:02 PM PST I've got a Ruckus r500 that's been flashed to Ruckus unleashed and I'm looking for a router to pair with it. I was using an old computer from work that I loaded pfsense on, but the internet kept dropping out on me so I switched back to my old Netgear router. I've seen some stuff about ubiquiti and microtik gear, but wasn't sure what would be best or if they'll even work. Thanks in advance for your insights! [link] [comments] |
Tried to upgrade modem/router, What is MoCA? Is it the solution for me? Posted: 27 Nov 2018 02:06 PM PST To start it off, I jumped the gun during Black Friday to replace the equipment that we've been renting from our ISP and bought a Netgear CM600 modem and a Netgear Nighthawk AC2400 Router from Best Buy for $89.99 each respectively. Just called my ISP, Frontier Communications, today to activate the modem and was told by a tech that the CM600 is not gonna work for me and that I need to find a MoCA router. Now before I go back to Best Buy and return my purchase(s), I was wondering if anyone on here can tell me more about MoCA and how it can solve our connection problems. Currently, we are using a FiOS G-1100 router that we've been renting from our ISP along with a Netgear WiFi Range Extender WN3000RP to boost signal downstairs of a 1600 sq. ft home. After a year of hearing complaints about how slow the WiFi speed is downstairs, I went to Best Buy on Black Friday to try to alleviate our problem without any knowledge beforehand. Now I'm trying to find information about MoCA routers which brought me here on this subreddit to ask for guidance. 5 GHz ranges only from my room upstairs to outside my hallway, 2.4 GHz only reaches to the immediate area down the stairs. That is where I have the WiFi extender placed to further increase the range for the rest of the first floor. Ran some Speedtest by Ookla for more info: Internet speed via Ethernet from router to my PC is at 10 ms ping, 91 Mbps down, and 103 Mbps up. Internet speed downstairs via 2.4 GHz WiFi to my phone is at 12 ms ping, 77 Mbps down, and 21 Mbps up. Internet speed downstairs via WiFi range extender to my phone is at 11 ms ping, 25 Mbps down, and 8 Mbps up. This is with 3 different connections: 5 GHz, 2.4 GHz, and 2.4 GHz extended. Only I was connected to the internet during the tests. EDIT: Whenever there's 3 or more connected, speeds drop and Netflix fails to buffer or lowers in quality while streaming. General internet surfing becomes painful and just a bad experience for everyone. Thanks in advance for all replies, I'd appreciate any help I can get. [link] [comments] |
Is there anyway to improve cell signal indoors? Not sure where else to ask. Posted: 27 Nov 2018 05:11 PM PST I go to a university in the American Southwest, because of the temperatures they window for my dorm room has a UV coating on it that seems to block most of if not all of my cell service. My signal is at full strength as soon as I walk out of the door so I assume the building is acting as a mild Faraday Cage. Is there a way to remedy this? Would changing providers help? Thank you in advance for your help! [link] [comments] |
Asus RT-AC86U 2.4GHz connection issues Posted: 27 Nov 2018 04:55 PM PST Just bought a router for Black Friday and set it up. Everything worked flawlessly for about 24 hours and now the 2.4Ghz band does not seem to broadcast anymore. The strange thing is that after I restarted the router last night, I saw that the 2.4 network was broadcasting, but the speeds were atrocious (eg: 8 Mbps when I have 500/500 from my ISP.) Does anyone here have any suggestions or advice? I'm tempted to return it, but wanted to give it one last chance before going that route. Thank you in advance for your help [link] [comments] |
Is my router slowing down my internet? Posted: 27 Nov 2018 07:55 AM PST My internet provider says they are putting 21mbps into the router (which I have confirmed by going into the router settings), however the max I EVER get out of it is 9mbps (wired or wireless). Is there anyway to increase this speed? Would a new router help fix this problem? P.s. the router combines as a modem so cannot plug directly into a modem. Thanks in advance for your help! :D [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Nov 2018 05:52 AM PST I got one recently, a Netgear, I get a red or Amber light for the connection quality. Mine has a pass through which I have a power strip plugged into. Is this why? Should I put the power strip in the other outlet? [link] [comments] |
Belkin AC1200 DB+ Domain Blocking? Posted: 27 Nov 2018 03:27 PM PST I want to add a blocklist of domains to block ads on my router, but I can't actually find the option to do this. The only domain blocking options are preset "parental filter" lists. Has anyone else with the AC1200 been able to do this? Also, I don't have a raspberry pi or an extra device to run PiHole from. Posted: 27 Nov 2018 04:00 AM PST Why do my PoE cameras work fine from my Nortel Baystack switch with PoE, but my Ubiquiti WAP requires a PoE injector? Also, if I want another PoE switch to power some security cameras, is there a certain switch I need to look for, or will any PoE switch work? I'm just curious because I thought I remember reading somewhere before that there are different types of PoE, and the fact that my PoE switch wont power my WAP has me curious as well. Thanks! Posted: 27 Nov 2018 03:07 PM PST Hello all! Hopefully this is the right sub for this question. A little backstory, I competitively game online and stream myself at the same time. I wasn't having an issue until I moved to a "rural" area and experienced extremely horrible internet. I did a speed test and the best I can get is 19 up and 1.9 down. In order to get any better internet speeds I would have to switch to satellite internet and I couldn't even be guaranteed if it would work any better ( also I do not want to game on satellite internet) I've done some research and found about bonding internet connections. I guess my question is that can I use my current internet provider as well as a satellite internet provider and bond them to get a quicker connection/ better upload speeds? I've read about services like Speedify and routers that can accept dual WANs but I'm a complete newbie at this. Any advice would be great! Thank you all! [link] [comments] |
Need a little guidance on an AP Posted: 27 Nov 2018 02:51 PM PST Hi there, to begin I honestly don't know much about home networking. My problem is that the modem in my current student house is in the front room and the wifi does not reach my room which is more to the back of the house but with some walls in the way. I'm currently using one of those crappy TP-link wifi extenders that one of my friends gave me and it cuts out all the time and provides poor speeds. After some research on here, it looks like an AP point would be my best bet but I have a couple questions about it. Most posts say that the Ubiquiti AP lite would be my best bet but the setup part is what seems to be confusing me. I can't drill holes to run wires or anything, so I'm wondering is it possible just to run a CAT-6 cable along the outside of the wall to connect to the Ubiquiti AP? I also won't be able to mount the AP onto the ceiling like in the instructions I've read so I'm not sure if that would cause problems or not. I have a 50ft Ethernet laying around that would make it pretty far, but does it plug directly into the AP lite or the small black thing that comes with the Ubiquiti product? In that case I would need another Ethernet cable correct? Sorry for being so clueless, if anyone can answer these questions or has an alternative solution that would be awesome. Thanks! For reference, it was this AP I was considering buying: https://www.amazon.ca/UBIQUITI-UAP-AC-LITE-Unifi-Wireless-Access/dp/B01DRM6MLI/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1543359045&sr=8-5&keywords=ubiquiti [link] [comments] |
WiFi: High upload speed, but slower download. Posted: 27 Nov 2018 12:35 AM PST Hi, In a effort to remove all or at least most of all network cables laying around my house, i did a small upgrade by bying some new hardware on sale this friday. I got myself a Linksys EA9500 and Asus PCE-AC88. At home i got myself a 1Gbps fiber connection and after settings everything up i get 620Mbps down and 930Mbps up over Wifi, Anyone got any tips for what settings to tweak or a explanation to why my upload is higher than my download? Installed New Modem and Router, Ethernet Connections No Longer Work Posted: 27 Nov 2018 12:20 PM PST I've been going to my in-laws for Thanksgiving week every year for six years and they don't know their wi-fi password and the signal didn't reach anywhere anyone needed wi-fi anyways, so I went ahead and purchased a new Arris Modem, Google Wi-Fi router and set them up. Phones, tablets, and my laptop worked just fine over wifi but they have a home ethernet setup too and I was able to access the internet just fine by directly plugging my laptop into their switch, before I had logged into the wi-fi, so I thought everything was fine. Almost a week later my father in-law tells me that the desktops connected via ethernet aren't working and the network printer isn't working either. These are on Windows 7 64-bit and on the adapter it says that the computer is connected to the network via IPv4 but they can't access the internet. It's really hard to trouble shoot this from 1,300 miles away, particularly without the internet there so I'm trying to limit the number of things I'm asking him to do. So is this likely a computer, router, modem, or provider problem? Since my laptop, Windows 10 Dell Latitude 7480, was able to connect through the switch, I'm assuming that it's the computers. I did have him try connecting to the wifi which worked but still no internet but he didn't unplug the network cable at the time, so what would Windows do in that scenario? Even if I get it working over wifi, will the printer work? The LAN has a static IP address and WAN is DHCP and IPv6 is turned off on the router. [link] [comments] |
What's more important, router or adapter? Posted: 27 Nov 2018 04:38 AM PST I have a Synology RT2600ac and an old N450 adapter from TP Link in my main PC. Unfortunately with the room I'm in running ethernet isn't possible. Since I got the Synology my download and upload speed has gone up significantly. I pay for 100 down/10 up and get 115 down/12 up on my PC right now. Is there any point in putting something more modern in where I'm already exceeding what I pay for in speed? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Nov 2018 06:07 AM PST My wireless router is going kaput so I'm replacing it with an ERX-SFP and one (or more) AC AP LITE's. I live in an ~1300 sqft (24'x54') single story house (2x and sheetrock) so it seems like a single, attic mounted, AP should get the job done. I should even get yard coverage in the 2.4 G band at least. The confounding factor is that the house has a metal roof. Before I go crawling through my attic on my hands and knees to move a cable pull, will reflections off the inside of my roof hamper my signal strength? Especially in the 5G band? EDIT: Bit the bullet and climbed up there. Looks like strong 5G where I need it decent coverage throughout the house. It even extends to the boundaries of my 50'x120' lot, barely. I doubt I will bring it back down to compare but it seems like there isn't much detrimental interference due to the roof. I'm now wondering if all the duct work up there is a bigger problem though. Ubiquiti Nanostation for PtP WiFi link? Posted: 27 Nov 2018 11:14 AM PST I have a 1700sf house with a detatched 16x20 workshop about 100ft away that I would like to extend connectivity to. I currently have two older Linksys APs running DD-WRT (one is a WRT-54G and one is a WRT-54GS), with the first in my attic powered via a PoE adapter, and the second in the shop in repeater/bridge mode plugged into my switch. It worked okay for a while, but the one in the shop is starting to fail. At first I would have to power cycle it about once a week, but now it needs to be power cycled 5 or 6 times a day. I'm eventually planning on replacing the AP in the attic with a Ubiquiti Unifi Ap AC-Lite (for linking to the shop as well as general purpose WiFi), and was wondering if I could use a Ubiquiti Nanostation in the shop as a bridge (repeater functionality would be nice, but not a requirement.) I would like to replace one piece at a time if possible since budget is a factor, would the Nanostation link up with my existing Linksys AP in the meantime (at lower G speeds?) Will the Ubiquiti equipment work over PoE? (I've heard some of their older gear uses a different PoE spec, but not sure about their newer stuff.) Also, it gets quite hot in my area, outdoor temps in the summer can hit 110F, which means attic temps can get up into the 150F range, would the Ubiquiti equipment survive in these conditons? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
BT home mesh and Dlink router. Posted: 27 Nov 2018 10:47 AM PST Hi, I currently have a 5 disc mesh setup with pretty much a disc in each room. Despite only having a 3 bed bungalow I still struggle to get a signal to the wifi cameras attached to the side of the house. The walls must be mega thick since even between internal rooms I teeter between blue and orange on some of the discs. I've placed one disc in the loft to try and attrack the wifi cameras to it (since its a bungalow this disc is about the same height as the cameras. It can manage two of the cameras but the other two still try to connect to discs in the house and end up with 1 or no bars signal. I have been gifted a Dlink dir 878 router which looks like a serious bit of kit. In setting it up I can actually get wifi in pretty much every room independent of the BT discs. I havent tried connecting the cameras just yet due to the hassle of having to remove them to scan the codes inside to connect to another network. I was wondering if there were some way to utilise this router within my setup. I wonder whether I can hang it off the disc in the loft but then it will create its own Wifi network im guessing. Is there anyway for it to 'mesh in' with the rest, or to just extend the signal that loft disc is making for further reach. Or could I make the DLink create a SSID thats the same as the BT discs? Again I think this may create a distinct network. Its clear I dont know what im doing with this. I really know very little about networking and all this stuff. But it would appear with 5 discs and a decent wifi router i should be able to get decent signal to all my devices and my cameras within a 3 bed bungalow! Thanks for any advice. [link] [comments] |

Markings on ancient Wisecom hub Posted: 27 Nov 2018 10:00 AM PST I'm sorting through a box of miscellaneous network junk and I find an old hub. It seems to work OK on my test network. The blinkenlights are marked with abbreviations that don't match any of the semiotic conventions I am familiar with. Similarly, there is a toggle-switch marked in a format that I'm unfamiliar with. Google suggests this device may have been manufactured by Wisecom. I'd really like to understand the LED light function to get the most use out of this. The switch on the side is marked with positions for "5X" and "5=". I am guessing that these have something to do with either forcing the speed of the device to be 5Mbps, or allowing it to vary speeds up to 5Mbps. Like I said, this thing is ancient. And that's just a guess. The green "PWR" led is pretty obvious, but it also has an amber "COL" state. Packet collision perhaps? On the port lights, "LNK" and "ACT" are ones I have seen before, but the amber state for these is "PAR" and I haven't encountered that abbreviation. Any suggestions what "5X 5=" or "PAR" might mean? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Does my ISP do different types of authentication depending on the type of device connected to it? Posted: 27 Nov 2018 03:32 AM PST My ISP is a fibre provider. They provide an ethernet cable which is connected to the router which the user has to authenticate with PPPoE. But if I connect my laptop directly to the 'internet' cable, I'll be redirected to the ISPs webpage where I'll sign in and can now browse normally. Does this mean my ISP authenticates my laptop in a different manner since I doubt my web browser does PPPoE authentication? [link] [comments] |
