Posted: 28 Nov 2018 08:19 PM PST Looking for a laptop that can run CPU intensive games like Hearts of Iron 4 and the upcoming Imperator Rome game. i7-8550U, 16GB RAM, 500g hard drive with 256 GB SSD 16GB DDR4 RAM Intel UHD Graphics 620 Thank you for thoughts! ~ $1000 engineering laptop for graduate coursework, self-training Posted: 29 Nov 2018 02:54 AM PST * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1,200 but ideally under $900. United States of America (California) * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specs for money - really want to make sure I check all my boxes on performance, power, graphics etc. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** The thing can be made of cast iron, so long as the price is right and the specs are met * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows 10, no compromises here. The software I'll be using is almost always for windows. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15" is ideal * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Yes - engineering and architectural analysis software: AutoCAD, Revit, BIM, RISA, Rhino, Solidworks, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** no games, perhaps light video/sports streaming * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** A good keyboard is ideal, I hit the return key and space bar with enthusiasm * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Want to try and take advantage of what's left of holiday sales. I'm late to the party I know. Main thing is taking advantage of free student software for engineering analysis that I can get with the .edu email, so that by next year I will have some solid software skills I can put on my resume. Still new to the computer scene but pretty sure I want at least an i5 Processor, SSD storage and a dedicated graphics card (2GB minimum) for the software I'll likely be multitasking with... 1920 x 1080 resolution too. I was looking at the Lenovo Legion Y530, Ideapad 330 15", HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop - 15t Quad w/ 2GB gfx, OMEN Laptop - 15t gaming as a starting point. However I don't want to go too cheap as it needs to last 4-5 years. Thanks in advance! EDIT: I copy and pasted the form but the formatting didn't come out right dammit. Sorry [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2018 03:47 AM PST I understand that you cannot upgrade the RAM on this model but can you upgrade the SSD on this? I've been trying to find a clear cut answer but I can't. [link] [comments] |

i5-8250U on Laptop for Programming Posted: 29 Nov 2018 03:09 AM PST Hi all. I would like to know if i5-8250U is suitable for pycharm and android studio to run smoothly. Thanks. My other laptop specs: 8GB RAM 240GB SSD 1TB HDD Windows 10 Home - 64bit [link] [comments] |
Need a good laptop that gets me through 4 years of uni Posted: 29 Nov 2018 02:23 AM PST
850€, Italy
Good battery and best specs for the money definitely
Mildly
Anything but Mac, some uni specific programs have issue running on MacOS
N/A
I will be running Photoshop, Final Cut, a few minor algebra/data analysis programs, and an audio editing software
No gaming whatsoever
I could not care less for touchscreen and fingerprint sensors, but I do need a good battery life and a sturdy build quality that gets me through 4 years of uni.
The most important thing is that I'll be able to run those softwares 3/4 years from now (I know that's a lot in laptop terms but still I need something that lasts a few years) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2018 02:03 AM PST Hey y'all I've been a proud owner of a 2012 macbook and cant handle the slow speeds and inability to do anything but web browse and teach online with it. My current job is an online teacher so I do rely on a laptop to work and to have fun. I plan to move back to Asia to teach online so I am looking to buy ASAP.
Cheapest/Leaning most towards (HP Pavillion Gaming Laptop/600$) PROS: 1. Low Price but packs a I5 and 1050TI and 1TB HDD 2. Looks professional 3. Camera is half decent CONS: 1. Deceptively cheap (?) is there a problem with it? The expensive/good looking one (Legion Y530/930$) PROS: 1. Beautiful Design and professional look 2. Rocking an I7 and 1050TI and 1TB HDD 3. Snappy and nice keyboard 4. Comes with CoD! CONS: 1. HORRIBLE CAMERA, need to add on an extra purchase of an already expensive laptop 2.EXPENSIVE The middleman (Acer Nitro 5/800$) PROS:1. I5, 1050Ti, and 256 SSD! 2. I think I can get priced math to amazon CONS: 1. Butt ugly design with the red backlight 2. Little heavier than the others Please let me know what you think of these three and any other possible choices for me! Thank you so much! [link] [comments] |
$800-$900 13-14 inch for moderate editing and light gaming. Posted: 29 Nov 2018 01:58 AM PST I was looking at zenbooks but did more research and now am lost, so whenever I have questions in life, I look towards Reddit for help. Programs I would run would be most of Adobe Cloud, Sony Vegas pro, and strategy games, like total war or rts, not many fps or GTA V esque games. I don't know if what I'm asking for exists, I don't mind bigger screens but just don't want low battery life or a heavy laptop, hopping for less than the weight of a MacBook pro which is 4.3 lbs. Finally I don't really care about the width I prefer a thicker laptop if it means more battery or performance. My dumbass decided I needed an upgrade as soon as bf and cm are over. On mobile so sorry about format. [link] [comments] |
GT65 titan 8rf or GE75 Raider 8rf? Posted: 29 Nov 2018 01:33 AM PST Hello everyone, I am currently trying to decide between these two laptops but I can't seem to decide so I would appreciate any opinions. For the GT65, I would be able to get 32GB ram for free. Please help me decide. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2018 09:09 PM PST I bought the Gigabyte Aero 15X v8 over thanksgiving. It comes with 16GB Ram which I'm almost positive is on a single stick. I want to buy another stick of ram for it to get 32GB. (I haven't been home since the package arrived so I can't open it up and look for myself). Does anyone know what brand of RAM that computer comes with so I can buy another identical one to put in? I'm going to need to run some VMs for work and I'll need a boat load of RAM and I figured since I just got this laptop I might be able to upgrade it to 32GB and use it [link] [comments] |
Don’t buy a laptop with a 15.6 inch 1366x768 screen Posted: 28 Nov 2018 12:24 PM PST My old laptop has this resolution in an 11.6 inch display and it looks just fine, and I didn't think it would look that bad on a 15.6 inch display. 1080p laptops are very expensive and I thought it was a bigger concern for gamers, photo/video editing, etc... But when I got my new laptop, I noticed this resolution is pure garbage. I can actually see the pixels of the image from a normal distance and it's not only bad for movies and games, but also harder to read text. The text isn't very clear and makes my eyes tired. It was so bad I had to return the product. If you ever buy a 15.6 inch laptop, make sure it's full HD. Never go for 1366x768 on a bigger screen. [link] [comments] |

$0-$500 absolute max but the cheaper the better **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs How important is weight and thinness to you? Doesn't matter Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Laptop for a high school student Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:45 PM PST Full disclosure, I know little to nothing about computers, so any help would be much appreciated. And apologies if I sound like a complete idiot. My daughter needs a laptop for highschool next year, we've been given some recommended specs but nothing else. It needs at least 4g of ram, wireless and Bluetooth, I have feeling lots of google apps will be used.

Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:36 PM PST I need a laptop with gtx 1050ti,i7-8750 and most importantly a long battery life and a comfortable keyboard and not to have any thermal issues, budget is 2000$,and dont suggest the dell xps 15 please as it has thermal issues [link] [comments] |
Razer Blade 2017 or Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme? Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:31 PM PST So my Alienware 13 R3's battery has officially taken a dump, it's been plugged in most of the year, yet after examining the battery report's log, it loses some serious battery health every time I use it unplugged (it's on 82.2% of original battery capacity after just 1 year and 4 days of use). Unfortunately, I discovered this battery degradation issue literally on the day my warranty ended, so I'm just gonna sell it. I've narrowed it down to two laptops, the Razer Blade 2017 and the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme (don't like the 2018 Base Model's worse battery life as I'll need to use it unplugged quite often starting next year, and the 2018 Advanced Model is out of my budget and its thermals seem worse according to Notebookcheck), but the most pressing question is, should I be concerned about the Razer Blade's reliability? With the ThinkPad, reliability is not a concern, but I do get a worse GPU (though it does have the newer, better i7-8750H CPU). While I'd much rather an i7-7700HQ with a GTX 1060, than an i7-8750H with a GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q, Razer's reliability and quality control definitely worry me, even though I have consumer protection laws here in Australia, for 2 years from purchase date (Australian Consumer Law). I suppose my question is, how's the Razer Blade 2017 when it comes to reliability? I know there's an expanding battery issue with some units, but doesn't that get RMAed free of charge? Can I solve any possible thermal issues with a thermal repaste? Or should I just play it safe and get the ThinkPad? Worse still, sales for both are ending today (29th) at midnight AEDT (16hr ahead of EST, 19hr ahead of PST, 17hr ahead of CST, 18hr ahead of MST) so the pressure is well and truly on for me to decide. Yeah, I'm kinda fucked haha. [link] [comments] |

Fed up of waiting after lacklusture Black Friday. Help!! Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:07 PM PST Having held off for my new laptop over the sales I'm really missing a laptop after ditching the surfacebook about 6 weeks ago. Here in the UK, there wasn't many good deals on for new tech, and I was hoping huawei would pull there foot out and sort the 16gb model of the matebook x pro. Nothing of the sort happened and now Im coming to the last two months of my current job contract after graduating. Many a Job applications on the horizon!! So far the best deals I've found Dell xps 13 4k. Used but still in warranty. I7/16gb/512gb £1200 Dell xps 15 1080p used. 2 years warranty. I7(8750h)/16gb/512gb 1050ti £1200 Or just foot the risk Huawei matebook x pro 3k 3:2 i7/8gb/512gb/mx150 from Microsoft for £1349. I battery life is the main thing for me as I hate having to be plugged in, all do 6+hours, and will be used with an egpu for gaming on a TV, and maybe the occasional older game (halflife/lotrbfme/civ) or emulator on the actual system. 9370- The hd620 may not be good enough for the occasion game, but 4x pcie. 9570-The xps 1080p panel really lacks behind the 3/4k panels. Mbxp-I know as soon as I buy it, huawei will release the 16gb model and I'll be stuck for no upgrades. New matebook x pro coming Feb 2019? [link] [comments] |
$500-$800 USD entry level gaming laptop Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:05 PM PST So I'm going to try not to be too redundant to every other listing here, and if I fail I apologize. As the title says I'm looking to spend somewhere between $500-$800 on an entry level gaming machine. There's a little wiggle room there, but less than $100. I don't understand much about CPU differences so I've mostly been comparing based on ram, storage, and graphics cards. My big problem is I'm not sure how much power I really need. I'm not going to be loading up any cutting edge FPS games, but I'd like to be able to run games like WoW, The Sims 4, and casual games of that nature flawlessly and also be confident that in a few years I'll still be able to run those types of games without having to worry too much about whether I meet the minimum specs. I'd say my main goal is to get the most bang for my buck in my price range so I can stretch the life of my laptop as long as I can. I've been looking into refurbished and used laptops for extra savings. I very rarely travel with my laptop, so weight, size, and battery life are not very big factors in the decision making process. If anything I have a slight preference toward a bigger screen and keyboard. I can't really tell from most listings which laptops these would be, but I'd also have a preference for machines that have extra slots if I wanted to add 8gb of ram or an HDD to a machine that only has a smaller SSD. Some of the laptops I've found that seem like good deals: $814, Acer Predator Helios 300 - Newegg, Refurbished: Currently out of stock https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834316212&ignorebbr=1 $600+, Alienware 17 R3 - Used, requires battery replacement $880, HP Omen - New $659, Asus Tuf - New $600, MSI GF63 - New Personally I think the best deal on the board is the refurbished Predator 300 which is close to $400 savings from new. But its currently out of stock and it also seems like its probably more machine than I need. The GTX 1060 graphics card rates much higher on passmark than any other card in this price range so my thought process was even though its a pricey machine it would serve my purposes for several years. The HP omen I just threw up for kicks because it's actually new and seems to be a comparable machine other than the GTX 1050ti. On the lower end the MSI seems like a pretty good deal, but the specs listing is a little ambiguous whether the graphics card is a gtx 1050 or gtx 1050ti which have a pretty material difference between their benchmarks. The MSI also has a SSD which is nice, but the ASUS has a full TB of hybrid memory, but I have no idea how good a value that is. Any opinions as to which of those laptops is the best deal, or which fits my criteria the best, or other laptops I should consider would be great. I'm especially interested if the machines I'm looking at have more performance than I need and I can go even cheaper. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2018 09:36 PM PST Not sure if it really exists but I'm looking for a 2 in 1 laptop that supports HDR and around 13 inch screen. I need something I can do light workload but also something I can simply lounge around in bed with. I've been told to simply get the new iPad but I live in a Google and Windows ecosystem so Apple simply won't work. A decent keyboard would be nice. As far as power goes I would prefer battery life over power and while I understand I might need a GPU to power the screen I do not need anything beyond a 1060 [link] [comments] |
Anyone have experience with Computer Upgrade King? Posted: 28 Nov 2018 05:32 PM PST I was looking at the CUK W650 listed at $1249.99 with very good specs. I'm hesitating because I have never heard of this brand. It sounds like they take existing laptops and upgrade them to resell? The specific laptop in question is this one: https://www.amazon.com/W650-Powerful-i9-8950HK-Notebook-Computer/dp/B07FK7TG97/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1543453583&sr=1-1&keywords=Intel%2Bi7-8700&refinements=p_n_feature_twelve_browse-bin%3A9521908011%2Cp_n_feature_four_browse-bin%3A2289792011&th=1 Any help, comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I feel a bit in over my head looking at all these laptops. I was also looking at the Dell G5587-7866BLK-PUS. If anyone has advice on this one I would be very thankful. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
