IT intern in over his head - how to access ftp file for a client?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:40 AM PST

Hi guys, I'm an IT intern working for the city I live in. I'm having a bit of a problem, and I would prefer not to bother my superiors, as I am offsite at the moment.

I've just replaced a client's old computer with an Optiplex 7010 with Windows 10. She needs access to some sort of ftp file that she had on her old PC... which I assume means file transfer protocol. I have no idea where to start, however. The file name is "ftp-ben (Paris1)", but that's the only information I have and I'm not sure what process I have to go through to make sure she can access it. The guides I've looked at online don't seem to provide me with the directions I'm looking for.

I would really appreciate some help!

Trying to install Windows 10 on new SSD and receiving error

What causes laptop screen to freeze randomly and only plug or unplug charger gets it working temporarily?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:25 PM PST

I bought this laptop last month and the screen started to freeze yesterday. Doesn't matter if the charger is plugged or unplugged. It just happens randomly. At first I thought it crashed, but it froze while a video was playing and I can still hear the sound. Then I realized I can get the screen to work again by plug or unplug the charger. I tried to look up online but can't find information with my exact problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Please let me know if additional information is needed. Thank you.

Bad Image error, can't restore windows 10, can't reinstall, have had no luck with googling the problem. Been at this for a few days.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:18 PM PST

I originally had 8.1 installed, updated to Windows 10 Home 64-bit, current version is Version 1803. Computer Specs at the bottom:

I ran into system file issues while trying to play steam games [I bought Age of Empires 3 and was trying to play it] I got a bad image errror (I don't have the exact file/error.exe). I started troubleshooting and found this website and followed the steps: What is Bad Image Error in Windows 10?.

May have made a mistake but got to fix 3, and ran a SFC Scan: Command Prompt(admin):

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17134.285] (c) 2018 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>Sfc/scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification 10% complete.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>

I thought maybe it was an update issue, and found this error in Settings>Windows Update 2018-11 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4467702) - Error 0x8e5e03fb

Though all the solutions I found said to run a SFC Scan (results above), next to run DISM RestoreHealth This is the Command Prompt(admin) result: Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17134.285] (c) 2018 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool Version: 10.0.17134.1

    Image Version: 10.0.17134.285

    [============ 21.0% ] Error: 605

The specified buffer contains ill-formed data.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>

Next Reset Computer: It does not work, Message: There was a problem resetting your PC. No Changes were made

I also went to the Windows 10 Download page and downloaded Windows 10 Instillation Media onto an external hard drive, its an older hard drive but I did not have a flash drive big enough [8gb]. Before I tried to install a new version of windows 10 on the C drive, removing all files on there. I tried to install the October 2018 Windows 10 Update. However, I received the Bad Image error again: Windows10upgrade9592.exe - Bad Image

C:\Windows\System32\appresolver.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. Error Status 0xc000012f.

So I tired to install Windows, it did not work. Just have a popup that says: Windows 10 Installation has Failed

On top of all this, I found out my graphics card driver is not working or corrupted... I can't install it because of the bad image error...

I am going to bed. If anyone has any idea what I am doing wrong or what would fix this please let me know.

    PC Specs:

Harddrive: SSD Crucial CT120M500 ATA Device

    AMD 6300 six-core processor

NVIDIA GTX 760 - not working has "graphic device driver error code 39"

How long should a laptop last until needing an upgrade?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:14 PM PST

Hey guys, amateur here so sorry for any poor knowledge but how long should I own a laptop until needing to upgrade? I have been sticking with a PC but due to a new job, portability is now one of my top priorities. The only real 'power consuming' uses would be using the laptop for day trading (involves multiple programs generally open on about two extra screens) but also casual photo editing and VERY casual video editing. No gaming will be involved. I am looking at going for a higher end dell or maybe mid-range (depending on the length of time I should get out of it). Thanks guys!

Can I use CPU with only 2/3 clamp screws without damage? (Dell Optiplex 7010)

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 02:29 AM PST

Hi everyone There are 3 places to put the screws in the CPU clamp but I only have 2. It's a Dell Optiplex 7010 by the way. I was just wondering if this would cause any long-term damage or life-span shortage to any parts even if I have the thermal paste, heatsink etc and the CPU and the pins aren't able to move or shake. Thanks

I want to download this website (https://www.teach.cs.toronto.edu//~csc148h/fall/) and all of its content and be able to view it offline. I tried http://www.httrack.com/ but I'm not sure exactly how to use it to download all of its contents.

HP Envy 17 Laptop Issues, Keyboard and Wifi Adapter Stops Working, Caps Lock Light Flashes

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:06 PM PST

I'm not the most computer literate guy, but I have an alright HP Envy laptop that I've owned for about 2-3 years now. A few months after I got the laptop, I started having a strange issue where the keyboard would stop working, the wifi adapter would stop working and eventually turn off, and the caps lock key would also start flashing.

Whenever this happens, any window that I have open slows down to a crawl, virtually freezing. The touchscreen still works, and opening the task manager shows "System Interruptions" at 100% CPU usage. After a couple minutes, the wifi adapter will eventually turn back on and connect to the internet, but the keyboard will only regain function after resetting my laptop.

I haven't been able to notice a real pattern with the issue, either. Sometimes I can go a month or two without the issue happening at all, and sometimes it will happen multiple times a day. It really seems to happen randomly.

How can I find duplicate lines on a .txt file?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 01:34 AM PST

I've searched the Internet and all I can I find ways/software that can delete or remove double lines.

I am not interested in that; I want something that will highlight or print double lines of a .txt file that is like 1000+ lines (not long ones, 20-30 characters).

I am on Windows and have no programming/coding experience.

My computer is stuck at 800x600 resolution.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 01:25 AM PST

I was playing Fallout 4 earlier tonight to try out some new nexus mods. The game froze up at some point, and I could still hear music, but the screen was completely stuck, and none of the regular options were working to get out of the game tab, so I hard reset my PC, and let it sit for a couple of seconds before turning it back on, the usual last resort stuff. When my PC turned on again I got an error that windows didn't load properly, so I selected the restart option. Once everything was working again my computer was stuck in 800x600, so I looked up a solution after restarting once more. I've tried redownloading drivers from Windows and Nvidia (Express Installation) then learned that in my graphics display Windows keeps stopping my graphics card (Code 43). I have no idea what is going on, but nothing seems to be fixing the problem, please help. Thanks.

GTX 970 saying it's connected to DVI-D, but it is not, plus, no signal when it's connected to any output.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 01:12 AM PST

    Hi.

My EVGA GTX 970 stopped working, i thought. When i turn the pc on i'd get only the BIOS splash screen and after that "No Signal" in the monitor.

I thought it was dead gone, but that intrigued me, after trying hundreds of things:

Format and New Install of Windows Buying new cables Testing in another monitor Unninstalling the driver through Safe Mode Etc...

Everytime that i would install the the Nvidia drivers, the screen goes black and "no signal", again...

So i connected the pc through TeamViewer to my Ipad and tried to investigate what was happening.

I ran some stress tests, checked the GPU memory, all perfect.

But it said that a monitor was connected to the DVI-D. A monitor called Digital Video. That mindblowed me a little bit. After hours googleing i didn't find no anwsers.

So, my hypothesis is: Faulty Output Connectors, or something that is making the GPU believes that something is connected to the DVI-D and nothing else more; Even if i try to connect to the HDMI it doesn't get into "multi-monitor" mode.

Do you think it's software related? Or Hardware related?

Is it possible to change the connectors panel in the GPU?

I'm going to test it in another friend's pc today, but i don't have too much hope.

Thank you very much so far.

HyperX Cloud II headphones - Mic quality horrible through Discord

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 12:47 AM PST

I'm having some trouble with my new HyperX Cloud II headphones, and specifically the mic.

When I use the "listen" function in the sound settings, the mic is crystal clear, and my voice sounds fantastic, but the moment I use it in Discord, it sounds like a knockoff mic from the early Xbox 360 days. Super low quality.

I've tried doing some troubleshooting, and some mention that you can use it without the USB-soundcard that comes with, but due to the cable being so short, I cannot use it without the USB-soundcard.

TL;DR: Mic quality sounds fantastic when using "Listen" in Windows settings, but is horrible when actually put to use through Discord.

Reddit not loading properly on mobile unless I use a VPN or 4G

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:32 PM PST

For about 4 days now I've been having this issue. I usually use reddit sync and suddenly loading posts and comments can take upwards of 10 seconds or even just time out when connected to wifi. I've tried boost for reddit, and the default reddit app as well and they're having the exact same issue. Using Chrome works better but still noticeably slower.

The strange thing is if I connect through a VPN everything loads fine. Not having the problem on my laptop, just mobile. I've tried deleting my wifi network and setting it up again, and I even factory reset my router but it hasn't made a difference.

Any ideas what could be up?

Phone is a Galaxy S8, I live in Australia.

Help please! HDMI/CEC soundbar not automatically working with Hisense N7 Smart TV.

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:30 PM PST

When the TV turns on, it detects the soundbar on the HDMI input and switches in on but I still need to manually switch the sound setting to the other input. The settings all seem to be correct. Does anyone know if there is a way to make it automatically pick it up? There have been a couple of times where it was worked this way when turning it on, but 99% of the time it doesn't.

Strange repeated buzzing sound coming from speakers

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 10:29 PM PST

I've been dealing with this on and off for a few years now, and I still can't quite get the reason right.

My audio will be overlayed by a strange, usually half-second long buzzing sound.

My sounds will be fine for a while, then out of nowhere the issue will flare up, happen very frequently, then stop again for a varying amount of time.

The buzzing tends to flare up three times, a second or so in between each time before a varying timeframe of no issues, usually five or six seconds.

I've provided a video where I use a song as an example. It's a little hard to hear at some points but it flares up really bad at around 18 seconds in.

Issues with my new graphics card

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 12:17 AM PST

Hello! I recently built a PC from scratch, and for a couple of weeks everything went fine! My GPU is an MSI GTX 1080, and I am running Windows 10 Pro 10.0.17134. My CPU is an I7 8700k. DDR4 is Corsair Vengeance 3000 MHz.

As of today, nearly every game I have tried to play has become unplayable due to (what I assume is) artifacting.

    https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/459280959536365570/517468153823887360/unknown.png Screenshots of the issue

If you cannot open those links, the issue is that textures appear to be "stretched", or spike out away from character models.

Some games are much worse than others, for example, Doom seems to have no issues whatsoever.

From what I was able to gather, this is a GPU issue. I tried underclocking my GPU. Updating my drivers. Rolling back my drivers. blowing the dust out of my case and GPU. Increasing the voltage to the GPU through MSI afterburner. Re-seating the GPU in the PCIE slot. and I tried increasing the airflow to the card. Nothing worked. The MSI stress tests all appeared to show no issues as far as I could tell.

Temps were never high enough to cause damage, the highest I ever saw was 70c.

Thank you for your help! I really hope my graphics card isn't faulty!

Does the length of HDMI affects connection that much?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 03:57 AM PST

I bought a 5 meter hdmi cable so I can play my console on a new monitor I bought. Console and monitor are far apart. But then the weird thing is that whenever I try to open hdmi connection on my monitor, it doesnt recognise any hdmi cable connected. The only way it does is when I turn my desktop on. Its f*cking weird. When I turn my computer off, the hdmi doesnt disconnect though. It works fine. Its just that, whenever I want to play my ps4, I have to turn on my computer first. My computer is connected via DVI cable.

    Gaming on a non-gaming laptop

    Posted: 29 Nov 2018 03:56 AM PST

I recently bought a laptop on black friday. It is Samsung Notebook 7 Spin. It has 8th gen i5, 8gb RAM, 256 gb ssd and intel hd 620 graphics.

I haven't received it yet but I think this is a perfect for a student like me. I want to do some light gaming and after some research, i found out that it is possible with some lower settings as long as the games are pre-2015 which is fine by me.

My question is; Should I do it? I need the laptop for at least 4 years and I dont want to mess up something especially the battery life. Should I take some kind of precautions or should I not do it at all?

C drive showing as full (99/100 GB) with nothing installed other than a 20 GB Windows 7. Google Drive (on E drive) repeatedly alerting about low space when there is some 80GB free in E. HELP!

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:57 PM PST

    • All my downloads and software installations are in drives other than C.
    • I ran CCleaner wipe feature and manually deleted whichever few GBs that I could. It keeps getting refilled. I can't understand this!
    • I put some heavy files in my Google Drive (which is in E drive and E has 80GB free space!). As those files sync with the cloud, Google drive kept giving error of low storage in local drive, and asking me to disable sync of some folders. This seems nonsensical.

To summarize, whenever Google Drive syncs, C looses free space. I am not even sure what to delete anymore from C. Windows should be 15 GB, or maybe 20 GB. Maximum 30 GB, but not more. But my C drive has like 99GB/100GB. I wiped all Temp files and used CCleaner Wiping tool. What else should I delete from C? Please help!

Edit: ran Disc Cleaner and freed up 5 GB more. The way things look like, Google Drive is going to refill that space (IDK why!) and my PC becomes slow as F%&$! What to do?
