Google's weather service is currently down

Phrased this so the mods don't remove it as a support question this time.

Tried to check the weather this morning and was greeted with this. Refreshing did nothing and switching to 4G did nothing, so I asked the Assistant about the weather and it's reporting 0° everywhere. Other users are having issues as well.

Comparison: Jabra Elite 65t vs. Samsung Gear IconX

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 01:05 PM PST

I wanted to do a comparison of these two truly wireless earbud options that are popular with Android users, in hopes that it's helpful for those of you looking for your next wireless headphones.

By way of background, I saw a great deal on a new pair of the Gear IconX 2018 a few months back ($99) and snagged them. I mostly liked them but had some concerns about their performance on phone calls - people often said they had trouble hearing me if I was using the headphones in anything louder than a quiet room, because of the amount of background noise picked up. This is a problem for me because I like to use the headphones on conference calls and other calls fairly frequently.

I had seen many gushing reviews of the Jabra (which is almost universally recommended by tech sites as the best truly wireless headphone on the market), including of the microphone quality. For Black Friday, Amazon was selling refurbished Jabra Elite 65ts for $99, so I picked a pair up.

I have a gallery of photos of the two sets of headphones, including the cases and what they look like worn, for easy comparison - here.

I think the main tl;dr of my review would be this - both pairs of headphones are excellent, but contrary to what seems to be the consensus on most tech sites, I think the Gear IconX is the one I would choose in a pinch.

    ...

Pros of the Gear IconX vs. the Jabra:

    • I find them more comfortable to wear. The Jabras hurt my ears after a shorter period of time, especially if the microphone stalk isn't tilted to point somewhat downwards.

    • They insert deeper into the ears. This is probably a matter of personal preference for most people, but I prefer a deeper nozzle because it leads to better sound isolation and a more secure fit in my ear.

    • Build quality looks and feels better. The IconX earbuds feel very solid, and feel like they are made of higher-quality materials than the Jabra, which feels a little plasticky. I think overall they look nicer and more premium as well.

    • The bluetooth connection with the IconX feels more stable on my Galaxy Note 8 than the Jabras. Part of this may be the fact that on the IconX, either ear can serve as the "master" headphone, so when I get dropouts, it's usually that the audio stops playing in one ear for a moment but continues in the other. In the Jabra, the right ear is always the master, so when I lose connection to the right ear I lose sound altogether and it sometimes seems like I may lose full seconds of audio on a podcast. I think frequency of dropouts is roughly comparable between the two, but the Jabra dropouts are more severe.

    • The headphones sit more stably in the case. When I open the case when I'm standing up and walking around, I'm not really afraid the headphones will fall out of the case because of the secure way they sit in the case, and because the case opens by pushing a button rather than by lifting the lid. By contrast, I am often worried that I will drop a Jabra out of the case while opening it (and it has happened to me a few times already).

    • USB-C charging case, as /u/longerfeeling reminds me, vs. micro-USB on the Jabra. It continues to boggle my mind that companies penny pinch to this degree on $100+ devices. Use the more modern connector, y'all!

Pros of the Jabra vs. the IconX:

    • Fast connection - The connection between my phone and the Jabra headphones feels quicker and more seamless than the IconX. It's truly instant and works exactly as you'd expect. The IconX isn't exactly unreliable in this respect but the time it takes to connect feels a little longer than the Jabra such that it doesn't feel quite as frictionless.

    • Stable connection to my ear. If the Gear IconX isn't inserted perfectly, the earphone can sometimes spaz a little, quickly registering that it has been inserted and removed into your ear over and over until you stabilize and secure it. It can be an annoyance because the headphone plays a tone every time it thinks it is being removed from or reinserted into your ear. I haven't had that experience with the Jabra at all.

    • More natural hear-through - Both earphones have a feature that allows you to pipe in ambient noise so that you're not totally tuning out the world around you if you don't want to be. Neither one is perfect, but the Jabra sounds a little more natural; the Gear IconX hear-through sounds more artificial.

    • Slightly smaller case - from the photos you'll see that the case sizes on the two are fairly similar. But I think the slightly thinner Jabra case and its less pebble-like dimensions make it a little more comfortable to hold and to store in, e.g., a pocket. But the difference is fairly minimal.

    • Battery life - I think the battery life on the Jabra is better. But I'm pretty good about keeping my headphones charged so I haven't run into problems on either one very often.

    • Better controls - The physical button controls on the Jabra are more reliable than the slightly finicky and unpredictable touch/swipe controls on the Samsungs, which regularly mis-interpret my inputs.

Both of the headphones sound quite good, I haven't dived deep into sound quality with either of them. Maybe at some point I can do that and update this review, but for now just know that both are pretty good, neither one is going to sound atrocious.

The biggest surprise for me, however, has been that the microphone quality on the Jabra does not sound any better than my mediocre experiences with the Gear IconX. I was really hoping that the Jabra would be more versatile for phone calls in noisy conditions than the Samsung, given what reviewers have said about the microphone quality and Jabra's background in the headset business.

Unfortunately, that just doesn't seem to be the case. I made a set of recordings of each headphone in a quiet environment, outside on the street, and in a noisy cafe, and you can hear that the Jabra does not perform noticeably better than the Samsung (and, in fact, may even be a little worse). It's not the most scientific test ever but I tried to keep my voice at about the same volume for both and in similar conditions, going back and forth.

    ...

So in conclusion - they're both pretty excellent headphones, each with some relative (but not glaring) strengths and weaknesses that will matter differently to different people. For me, I think the Gear IconX is a better package, given that the Jabra didn't solve my call quality issues. And while I think people can happily justify buying either of these headphones, the one thing I will push back on is the notion that the Jabra is the uncontested king of the hill. I think the IconX is great in its own right and doesn't deserve to be considered in a tier below the Jabra.

Hope this is helpful to some of you!

We use this in our car to charge my S8 and my wife's S9. This morning, my wife went to charge her phone and the thing was melted and burnt. Not sure what happened, but I take very good care of my devices and accessories, so I don't think this is a case of "user error".

[DEV] Check out my first app - An Anki Flashcard Maker and Reading Assist for Language Learners

    Posted: 30 Nov 2018 06:59 AM PST

Hi, if you've ever try to read in a new language, you'd know it's a huge pain in the ass to look up words with your fat thumb on a small screen. Or you've just discovered a totally awesome word and want to remember it using Anki, but typing it out is just so..o slo..w. That's why I created an app to help relieve that pain. It's called ReadDict.

More specifically, there are 3 main functionalities:

    • Text tokenizer: For languages which do not use white space as a word barrier (Chinese, Japanese) it is really tricky to know which character belong to which word. ReadDict use specialized NLP tokenizers to pick up individual words for you, which make reading those cryptic text much easier. Example:
    1. Turning "すもももももももものうち" into -> "すもも" - "も" - "もも" - "も" - "もも" - の - うち
    2. Turning " 今天很残酷明天更残酷后天很美好 " into -> "今天" - "很" - "残酷" - "明天" -"更" - "残酷" - "后天" -"很" - "美好"
    • 1 click look up: For any language, the definition of any word is just 1 tap away. You can use any dictionary site you want.
    • Flashcard with context: The best way to learn new word is with flashcard, and the best way to create flash card is with context in which the word is used. Create your own flashcard with ReadDict and you'll have a beautifully formatted card in Anki with context sentence. The word itself is highlighted so you can recognize it in a glance.

    Watch it in action here

Download for free on Google Play or just simply search for "ReadDict".

This app started out as a personal project to deal with many issues I encountered while learning a foreign language. The process of coding this app is much ... much longer and harder than I anticipated. But I am proud of the finished app because I believe it brings real value to learners :)

This is my first attempt as an Android developer, so I would really like to hear feedback from you guys. Which feature you find most helpful? What is confusing? How can I improve it? Thanks a lot.
