Windows Internals 7th edition Book companion download marked as trojan

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 12:36 PM PDT

Not sure if I was doing something wrong, but I was attempting to download some companion software content for the Win Internals 7th edition book, and Windows Defender indicated that the zip file contained a virus <Trojan:Win32/Zpevdo.A>. The link provided by the book was url: https colon // aka dot ms / winint7ed / downloads

Is this just me, has anyone else run into this? am I using the wrong url? or is this actually a trojan on a legitimate link? Or a false positive? I'll look at this closer in a lab.

Place to buy OEM windows license

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 07:27 AM PDT

Hi all, not sure if this is the right place to ask this question. Mods - If this is not the right place feel free to remove this post.

I am planning to build my own PC's and planning to do it for friends and family for now. I am looking for a place to get OEM licenses for my build. I understand that if I install the OEM edition, I have to provide the support, which I have to do anyway. I am looking for 5-7 copies for now. There are some shady looking sites selling this often at 20$ , not sure if these are legit. Do anyone know if I can get this directly from Microsoft. I don't want to buy the full retail edition as for 7 PC's the cost is going to be too much.

Why does windows have to update when I turn the computer on? Why can't it wait until I turn it off?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 02:53 PM PDT

Are these updates soooo important that they have to do it right now? I've 40 minutes to spend on the computer and now I'm waiting 20 minutes for the updates to finish.

Yes, I haven't used the computer in a couple weeks.

What's wrong with doing it when I turn the damn thing off? I'm using the computer (other computer, not this one) because I need that computer right now. Not in 20 minutes. NOW.

How to prevent window reshuffle when reconnecting main monitor

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 05:54 PM PDT

So I have the most minor of minor problems.

I have two monitors feeding out of my computer, one DVI (w/HDMI adapter) which is my main monitor, and one HDMI for my secondary. I also have an HDMI switch on my main monitor so I can play.. well Switch games on my main monitor.

This works mostly fine except when I use the switch it disconnects monitor 1. This is also mostly fine because I only keep one window open on my main monitor most of the time (whatever I'm currently working on) so my open windows dont have to rearrange themselves over to monitor 2 because they're already there.

What irks me is that when I switch back to the PC, the computer goes "Oh you must want all these windows back, let's return them to the main monitor" even though none of them started there to begin with, so now I have to drag discord and chrome and git and explorer back to monitor 2 to get my workflow back together.

Is there any way to tell windows to not reshuffle my stuff?

    Unable to use task manager

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 09:48 AM PDT

    Unable to use task manager

I am a windows 10 user. I use process explorer to manage my tasks because I find it works better than the default windows task manager. I came into a problem however when I needed to change which programs start on windows startup. After doing some research I've come to the conclusion that I can't use process explorer to manage my programs that boot on startup. After selecting "Replace Task Manager" on process explorer on initial install, I can't find a place to open up the default task manger, I can't even find a place to download it. Ctrl+Alt+Delete just brings me to process explorer, Ctrl+Shift+Esc doesn't do anything either. I've also looked into trying to open it from the system32 folder and also attached a picture of the error. This is extremely frustrating and thanks in advance!!!

My question: Can I modify which programs startup from process explorer? If not, how can I go about getting task manager back.

Question about Windows Insider Program & Windows activation key

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 06:01 PM PDT

I just got Windows set up by Boot Camp on my MacBook Pro.

Is there a way to get a free activation key for Windows? (Yes I am aware it still works without it)

Does being in the Windows Insider Program actually get you an activation key? How?

    I appreciate the help. Thanks.

I had Windows 10 on my laptop, changes to Linux and now I want Windows back...

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 08:21 PM PDT

Title. I had Windows 10 on my laptop (came with Windows 10). However, because I wanted to try Linux I decided to just removed Windows and use Linux (I know, I should have used a bootable USB). Anyway, is there a way I can get windows back?

    Cheers

Edit1: Wow! You gus hace been amazing! Thanks for helping me out :). This laptop is a very small laptop with an Intel atom and came with Windows 10 however due to the power of the laptop, tasks would be completed slowly and I couldn't open more than three programs at a time (edge, word and pdf. Any more than that and it would heavily lag). I decided to use linux Mint and my laptop ran like butter, super fast! BUT working on libreoffice is just not the same as word, therefore I preferred to switch back to windows 10.

    I have a Surface Go.

Oddly enough, apps like Chrome and Task manager don't have any issues, but my Evernote is missing random text/pictures/etc...

Best Operating System for Modded Minecraft ? for modpacks like Feed The Beast (FTB)....

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 11:24 AM PDT

Should i go for a Linux distro like Ubuntu, Linux Mint? or should i pick Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit or Windows 10 Pro 64bit?

Windows 10 usually gives me crashes sometimes - maybe i need to reset though.

Which one will give me the most stability and performance? I might also be hosting a private server some times for my friends.

I heard in Minecraft Linux you can't join servers like Hypixel, Mineplex, Hive and any sort of online servers. You get some error on io.netty or something idk.

i didn't know where else to ask but i guess this is a good subreddit....

For those with broken Modern/Metro apps (e.g. won't open)

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 01:58 AM PDT

After I foolishly updated Windows to 1809 on Day One, I found that none of the Modern/Metro apps worked, including Settings. I would click on an item and it simply wouldn't open. I posted here, I searched forums, I searched Technet, I Googled for hours upon hours - all without success.

I did find a fix, though, via a combination of suggestions and guessing. This was especially helpful with the Settings cog not doing anything on the Start menu (as well as Weather, News and any Right-click option or CTRL+X menu option that led to Settings). I will use the Settings app as an example for this guide, but it works with all Modern/Metro applications (for me).

    • Open Start Menu
    • Right-click on the Settings cog wheel
    • Select More -> App Settings
    • A new window will appear - scroll down to Reset
    • Select Reset and restart your PC, or log-off and back on

The app should now work. The same can be done for any Modern/Metro app via a Right-click or in the Apps list part of the Settings menu, but Settings itself doesn't appear there (I hope that made sense).

I hope this helps someone. People often ask for help and then don't post a solution if they find it - it really annoys me! I apologise if this post is not formatted correctly. I try with Reddit but find it hard to use.

My USB Bluetooth adapter keeps shutting off whenever my PC wakes from sleep.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 12:32 AM PDT

For a quick heads up I am running the latest Windows 10 update (the one that was pulled due to the File Explorer bug), and this was not caused by it. This has actually been an issue for me for quite a few months now. As for the issue itself, every single time I put my PC into sleep mode, my USB Bluetooth adapter (a generic CSR 4.0 reciever, such as the one seen here) shuts off entirely and won't turn back on until I manually unplug it and plug it back in after waking my PC up. Interestingly, this only happens when using sleep mode. If I turn my PC off entirely and then turn it back on from a cold boot, the adapter will turn on with the rest of the PC like it should.

I've been dealing with this for a while now but at this point, I'm really starting to get annoyed by it so does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Windows 10 problems with keyboard layouts

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:01 AM PDT

Story time: I had an old laptop dual booting Windows 7 and Arch Linux. My wife was using Windows 7 most of the time, so if she was doing something on it and I wanted to check for something on the web or do something quick I just used her account. Most of the time I used it for writing text (in Romanian) for my website - I had no issue at all with changing between Romanian (Programmers) and English (US) layouts.

Then, we bought a new laptop which came with Windows 8, which I upgraded to Windows 10. And this is where my hell starts.

As I said above, I'm using Romanian (Programmers) keyboard layout when I write text and English (US) when doing general surfing. Besides the fact that the keyboard shortcuts are a mess now, I keep getting switched to Romanian (Standard) for some reason. I tried all combinations: Remove English (US) layout completely and stay on Ro (Porgrammers), or removing and adding back Ro (Programmers). It would work for some time (a few days at most) and then switch automatically to Ro (Standard), but the problem is that the icon indicator still shows Ro (Programmers). I've also done a fresh install at some point and still get this issue.

Another problem I found during these tests was that when I removed English (US) keyboard layout completely, even though I chose that the interface language should be English, I got all my menus in Romanian - and it's not a complete translation: there are some parts that are translated and some that are still in English, so it's a mess.

Is there a way to fix the keyboard layout problem? Is it a known problem?

[Win10] How To Give Default Apps Parameters?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 11:21 AM PDT

I setup my mother's computer this weekend. She's not very tech-savvy, and I created a bunch of Google Chrome shortcuts with custom icons on her desktop to the websites she needs for work. An issue we encountered is that she uses QuickBookOnline, which doesn't allow multiple Chrome instances of different companies to be opened at the same time. Unless the instances have their own Google "person" profile. So she has a shortcut for every company that uses QuickBookOnline, and she has other shortcuts which use a "person" we named "Chrome".

The issue we have is that, other than the QuickBookOnline shortcuts, all her passwords and Google settings are on "Chrome". If an application launches a website (i.e. if she clicks on an Outlook link), it will launch "Chrome.exe", which defaults to the previous "person" used. This means it can open one of the users used for QuickBookOnline. We want to avoid her having her passwords on every chrome "person" (as this was a problem with her previous setup, since she didn't remember who had access to what).

The obvious solution seemed to be to add the --profile-directory="Default" parameter to Chrome.exe, but you can't. You can only add a parameter to a shortcut to my knowledge. On top of that, you can't set a default application to point to a shortcut using the settings page.

Is there a way, either through Windows 10 or through a third-party app, to either set her default web application to a Chrome shortcut that has the --profile-directory="Default" parameter? If not, is there a way to give always run a default application with a parameter?

If none of these are possible, would it be possible to write a program in C++ or something that just runs the Chrome.exe file with the desired parameter and forwards all other parameters to Chrome.exe, and set that as the default web app? (since it appears default apps need to be ".exe" files.)

    Windows 10 Bluescreen Error Code

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 10:50 AM PDT

    Hey Guys,

I just self built a PC and tried to install Windows 10 Home. In order to do that, i first bootet the ISO-File on an USB-Device. Then i booted Windows from it and it worked out.

After every restart i usually get bluescreen error code. I nearly tried all of the solution approaches you can find on the web but nothing seemed to fix this problem.

I got the Windows Key from mmoga, a third provider, who sold me this key. 9€.

Do you guys think this error appears as a result of the key beeing "illegal" ?

I uninstalled the key with cmd and now, my Windows is deactivated, but the Bluescreen wont pass.

How do you revert your primary display?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 12:01 AM PDT

Hi guys! I'm new to PC's and Windows, and so I don't know what I'm really doing. I have a dual monitor setup, and I accidentally checked the "Make this my primary display box" on my secondary monitor. Now I can't press it again to revert it. Any way that I can maybe revert this setting? It's getting a bit annoying that all my apps and the tabs that I open on my browser isn't appearing in front of me. Please help! Thanks!
