Posted: 29 Oct 2018 12:36 PM PDT I'm looking to setup my home network and am having trouble figuring out what pieces of kit I need to achieve what I want. At present, I have a router/modem (with very little config options) and an unmanaged switch behind it. Connected to the switch is an ethernet cable to each room in my house, and a WAP (Ubiquiti AC-Lite). On the WAP, I have 3 vlans set up, my main vlan, a guest vlan, and a vlan for my lodger. I need to have one of the rooms to be on the lodger vlan. Additionally, I plan on separating my IOT devices onto their own vlan. I will need my phone on the main vlan, to be able to connect to these devices. However, I don't want the devices to be able to connect to other devices on the main vlan. Then maybe later on my server on yet another vlan, which needs to be accessible from one of the IOT devices and my pc on the main vlan. What devices will I need to achieve the above? Thanks! Temporary Guest Network access Posted: 29 Oct 2018 07:23 PM PDT So hear's the skinny: my mother-in-law is paranoid and insists on setting up a Guest Network with her linksys router. I'm the one that configured it and I know it has the capability to set one up. I don't remember the model. But if anyone needs that info, I'll gladly retrieve it later. As you may have put together, the idea is to create a guest network and then once a device disconnects from the guest network, it essentially forgets the network. I've seen in enterprise environments where devices forget network credentials/settings if it hasn't connected in a while, but I haven't played around with guest networks on a home router as I don't believe them to be as secure as the primary network. (Maybe I'm the paranoid one?) Regardless, does anyone here have experience with something like this? Or have a different suggestion? I'll try to clarify a bit more. I know I'm not the best at describing these sorts of things: Hypothetical: I visit my M-I-L's home and connect my phone/laptop/device to the guest network and I'm able to connect to the internet and do whatever work I need while staying segregated from the primary network where her work computers and sensitive information would be. When I disconnect from the guest network/leave her house, my device would be forced to have the password entered again. Personally, I think changing the guest network password every so often would suffice, but she's not that savvy. When she gets in a jam or wants anything done regarding her network, she either calls me to help out or calls the guy she used to deal with and has to pay him. I could log in through the Linksys remote administrator portal and change it every so often, but I'd REALLY like to avoid that. After talking it over with her, the idea of temporary guest network log ins came to my mind. Tell me if I'm just way off base. I'm willing to learn. [link] [comments] |
Need Help Choosing a router: Asus RT-AC1200 or TP link Archer C60 Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:46 PM PDT I'm currently looking out for a new router and my budget is about $75. I've narrowed it down to the ASUS RT- AC1200 and the TP-Link Archer C60 I need a router that has good range and speed since I stream a lot and play games online, usually, there are at least 8 devices connected to my router. Any suggestions [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2018 07:25 PM PDT Hello. I work in a hospital and their WiFi sucks. Their computers are wired, I believe separately from the "guest WiFi" that we employees have to connect to if we want internet. When I have downtime I like to be on the internet and wanted to know things to look out for when connecting to their system via Ethernet. Can they track me? Will their IT team find out? Not that I want to do anything illegal, I just don't know if they'd frown on it. And I definitely don't want to lose my job. [link] [comments] |
Ethernet Outdoors for IP Cameras Posted: 29 Oct 2018 11:16 AM PDT I had a new construction home that came wired for ethernet. It also came with 1 wire that ends outdoors. I am trying to install 4 outdoor POE cameras and need some help. I currently have a Unifi network indoors with a 24 port POE Switch. I also currently have some cameras setup indoors. My first idea was to take this one wire that was already exiting the house, and get an outdoor mounted POE switch that is daisy chained to the indoor switch from this one wire, and powered from an outdoor outlet. However, I am in Chicago and it gets so cold outside that I think a switch in an enclosure might not be the best idea. My new idea is to drill a hole in the house that can fit 4 ethernet cables coming from the 24 port POE switch and run those wires all the way to the camera location. Is this a better approach? If so, I have some questions:

Need advice setting up 10Gb office network Posted: 29 Oct 2018 04:37 AM PDT Hi there, I'm trying to set up a small 10Gbit network in our office to help speed up the connection of multiple workstations to our NAS. It's a small media agency with around 10 employees, we do a lot of 3D rendering and compositing work, all of which is done off of our Synology DS3617xs with a 10TB (soon to be 20) RAID10 array and an SSD cache that can reach transfer speeds above 1000MB/s with ease. The goal is to get 6 of our workstations on a 10Gb connection to the NAS so we can eliminate the massive bottleneck that is currently our 1Gb network. The rest of the systems would remain on the old network. To do this, I plan to purchase Edimax EN-9320TX-E cards for the workstations, the appropriate 10Gb Synology card for the NAS, and of course a switch. I'm considering both the HP 1850 8-port switch as well as the QNAP QSW-1208-8C. The QNAP is slightly cheaper and has 4 extra SFP+ ports for future upgrades, so that's the one I'm leaning towards right now. The building is wired with CAT6 and the maximum length we'd be going from switch to PC is about 30ft. Now to the actual question, since we don't have an IT department and I'm by no means an expert, I just wanted to ask if anyone here sees any issues with my plan. I'm specifically worried about hardware incompatibilities and what switch to buy. Noise is also an issue, as we don't have a server room and the switch would end up on a shelf with the rest of the hardware. If anyone has any recommendations or experience with either of these switches, I'd love to hear. [link] [comments] |
Is 80mbps on "fiber" really faster than 100mbps broadband? Posted: 29 Oct 2018 08:54 AM PDT CenturyLink is in my neighborhood "for the next few days" as they've just installed a fiber node. They're running an install deal with no setup fee. They claim it'll be way faster than my current broadband but as I asked more questions about actual performance I began having some doubts as it will only be 80mbps and won't be fiber all the way to my modem. I currently use a local broadband company and regularly see around 95mbps down and 5mbps up on my current 100mbps broadband plan. I know fiber is faster but it seems pointless to run it to my house and then have it go through my phone line to my modem. If I'm actually seeing close to 100mbps is it a no-brainer that 80mbps fiber will be slower? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Oct 2018 08:18 PM PDT Ran my own MTR test throughout the past 24 hours and have seen packet losses up to 25%. Accessing any website is at least a 3-4 refresh attempt before it loads up, say goodbye to nba league pass or playing literally any multiplayer games. Isp sent out a tech who was helpful and apologetic, but he confirmed my node is fucked because it's supposed to service at most 500 modems but there's 1000+. He sent the issue to maintenance and told me that they probably wont split the node or perform a fix until the middle of 2019. He got an email from his supervisor saying to tell everyone to upgrade to docsis 3.1 modem.... Will this help at all? Does anyone more knowledgeable in this field have more insight about this kind of situation; can i negotiate my billing down or is it time to change to the only other isp in the area. I'm in the suburbs, modem is Arris SB6183 and Router is Netgear r8000. Thanks for reading [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2018 07:57 PM PDT I need help installing my UniFi AP AC Lite. I'm so confused. I'm a newbie. I only bought the UniFi Lite, I didn't buy a Controller. Do I have to buy a controller? I set it up like how I would set up a normal router. Why is my download speed only giving me a quarter of what it's suppose to be from ISP? [link] [comments] |
Help with work VPN on home network Posted: 29 Oct 2018 07:52 PM PDT Hi, I have an Asus RT-68U at home and when I connect my work laptop with Cisco AnyConnect VPN to my wifi network, I cannot access any websites. VPN is connected and I can access my company's intranet, SharePoint sites and company outlook email but any external sites such a Yahoo don't load. It is the weirdest behavior because when I connect my work laptop through ethernet directly from the modem, external websites work and if i use my phone's mobile hotspot, the external websites work as well. I have no idea why my router is behaving like this or what setting I'm missing. I apologize if this is the wrong subreddit. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Horrible speed through wall jack Posted: 29 Oct 2018 02:14 PM PDT Hello everyone. I just moved into a new apartment. We had AT&T fiber (1GB) setup 2 days ago. When the tech was here he said we got 2 jacks set up for free so I selected the 1 in the living room and 1 in the bedroom. He said he had to rewire the ports which took him about 30 minutes then everything seemed to work and he left. This morning I ran a speed test from my gaming pc in the living room and saw i was getting less then 100 down/up. I've restarted the gateway/router multiple times, tried multiple cables. If I plug a cable directly into my router from my computer i get in the 800+ range for up/downloads. But soon as I use either of the 2 wall jacks I cant get above 100 down/up. I took some pictures of the other end of the jacks in our closet. Is there anything I can do to try and fix this or will I just have to call AT&T back out? Thanks! (Edit: Forgot to mention, I tried both ports he installed and was getting the issue on both.) [link] [comments] |
Any MOCA Solution for Dish Hopper and Joey Setups? Posted: 29 Oct 2018 05:05 PM PDT I was looking into doing a MOCA setup for a friend's house (to connect APs) but he's on Dish Network (USA) and from what I've read standard MOCA to Ethernet adapters don't work since Dish's "Hopper and Joey" MOCA derivative is proprietary. Are there any options out there or do I have to look into running cable (oof) or maybe a mesh network? [link] [comments] |
Simple question regarding NAT type Posted: 29 Oct 2018 04:07 PM PDT I've been having a daily problem with my Xbox having a moderate or strict NAT type even though the Xbox is in my dmz. I'm using a Comcast-provided Arris gateway. How is this even possible? [link] [comments] |
Spectrum Router Suggestions for guy moving into tiny city apartment Posted: 29 Oct 2018 12:07 PM PDT My apartment is only about 500 square feet so the size is not big. The only available provider is spectrum 200mbs. I have a PS4 (original one), 2 Laptops, 2 cell phones, alexa, and all the streaming stuff (netflix, hulu, amazon prime, hbogo, etc). I didn't want to rent the router from Spectrum. Which one should I purchase. I'm using their free modem. [link] [comments] |
How far apart can mesh points be in a mesh network system? Posted: 29 Oct 2018 12:05 PM PDT I'm interested in setting up a mesh network that can cover my house, barn, and yard but I'm unsure of how far apart the mesh points can be from the router. Has anyone had experience putting mesh points in a garage or other detached building? The barn is about 50 yards away from the house. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:43 PM PDT So I'm new to this nas thing. I'm using a netgear r6400. I am able to setup Readyshare and some ftp stuff if I am outside my local network and I'm only using a usb thumbdrive(64gb lol). I am planning to buy a bigger storage and I'm looking at a 2TB WD passport. Would that be enough for streaming videos at home? Is there gonna be any bottleneck when using a usb 3.0 for streaming? There'll be at most 3 people streaming but probably just 2 devices at the same time. I'm probably going to store some photos as well and maybe store some 4k videos captured from my phone. Would I be better building a whole nas storage and spend some more money compared to just buying the WD storage? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Local area network speed testing on multiple devices. Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:13 PM PDT Hello all, I am building a gig home network and am still new to this. I have a networking degree, but one thing we never covered in classes is how to check the speed over the ethernet cables to multiple devices to ensure maximum speed. I currently have cat 5e running on my network and that is supposed to be able to run max speeds on 1 gig, obviously 6 or 6a being better. So before I spend the money to upgrade all of my cables I want to test all of my point to point connections to ensure I am getting full gig speeds. Is there a way to do this? Devices would be from my home pc to my router, ps4, server, and tv. I have heard about lan test but that doesn't seem like it would work for what I want to do. Any help in this would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Large home, need better coverage Posted: 29 Oct 2018 06:19 AM PDT New house. Currently 100Mbps. Maybe 20 devices. No complaints. Adding probably 30 more devices with new roommates downstairs. At&t fiber available. Box is upstairs. Really lacking connectivity downstairs. Non existent in basement and far side of home. Would running access points to the far side and basement from the router be enough to keep a decent connection? Plan to upgrade to fiber in the future as well. Coverage is primary goal, speed is secondary. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
WiFi can't access to Internet for no reason and happens everyday Posted: 29 Oct 2018 07:30 AM PDT 1.My ASUS RT-AC 5300 router can't access to any internet services even the "admin page" for no reason everyday on uncertain time. This will happen around 10s, after that every thing will be right again. WiFi stays on but can't load any internet services and the admin page. 2.It happens around 17:30 and 22:20 mostly. 3.It only happens on my laptop, my another PC and phones both are OK on the same 5G network. 4.newest laptop WiFi divers(killer-wireless-ac-1535) and newest router firmware. ------------------------------------------------- I've contacted the ASUS support, they said they haven't experience this issue so let me return my router for repair. Basically I can confirm that my router is OK due to my issue description 3, so I really want to know what's my laptop's problem, is there any tools for me to track and analyzer this issue? Please help me and I'll post all my setting if you guys need it. [link] [comments] |
Windows 10 PCs lose Connection to Synology NAS and Can't Connect to Mapped Drives? Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:00 PM PDT So, I had a recent power outtage, my NAS's and most of my PCs were backed up with a UPS ( so this may or may not be related). Right now, my PCs are not recognizing the Synology NAS, even when I use the Synology Assistant - it does not find it. I tried poking around with firewall settings, and even when I disable it, it does not work. I know that I can connect to the NAS if I go in through the Web Portal, just not through browsing through my network mapped drives. It's like Windows can't see the NAS via the network. I even tried going to the Credentials Manager and deleting the old profiles. No luck. As far as I know, my configuration does allow SMB and/or allow network discovery I know one one of my PCs, I can connect to it via a mapped network drive just fine. Anyone come across this before? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Best Way to approach extension of wifi ? Posted: 29 Oct 2018 02:50 PM PDT Hey guys, My GF recently moved in to a shared apartment, the land lord lady is fine with sharing wifi but the signal is pretty poor in my girlfriend's room. I'm either thinking of just buying an router that can act as a repeater and just extend the wifi or either buy something like an ubiquiti nano station , put it just like a tad outside her room running an Ethernet cable and then connect that internet cable to a WiFi AP or cheap router. Which one you guys think is a better idea ? [link] [comments] |
Powerline adapters and second wifi network Posted: 29 Oct 2018 06:17 AM PDT I live in a basement apt underneath a house that I rent. I am responsible for providing wifi. Currently a have a Linksys router upstairs connect to a a 200mb Charter modem. Downstairs the signal can get sketchy. I also would like to have my own private network. My thinking is use a powerline adapter and come out of the linksys Router upstairs and then in the basement configure another router (with a different IP scheme) for wifi down here. I would connect the other powerline Ethernet port to my desktop. Everything I am reading says to configure the second router as an access point but I would prefer my own wifi network. Am I missing something or is this doable? Or should I also get a cheap wired router and put it before the Linksys upstairs? This avoids all of my traffic going through the wifi router the upstairs tenants use. Open to suggestions. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
My Asus RT-N66R router frequently shuts off Wifi for a few seconds Posted: 29 Oct 2018 07:35 AM PDT Lately my Asus router has been turning off WiFi momentarily. I will be watching Netflix or something and I'll see a pop-up that says "no internet connection". When that happens if I look at my phone I'll see no WiFi at all. It comes back pretty quickly though. My smart TV also has a light that will blink when there is no connection and my Harmony hub has an LED that turns red if there is a problem. So I know it's not the devices. I do have quite a few WiFi devices in my house (cameras, smart lights, speakers, etc..). Maybe I'm overloading the network? Though most of those devices aren't particularly active at any given time. Any ideas? I am on the latest Asus firmware. I have been rebooting the router frequently since this started happening but it still happens. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2018 07:33 AM PDT I have a nighthawk m1 that I am using as my modem due to living in the country. I have a netgear router connected to it. I need to be able to boost the m1 signal to get better data speeds. I am not sure what the best way to do this is. I have signal but I fluctuate between 10mb and 1mb download. Will just an antenna work of do I need a booster as well? Any help is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
