    Simple Questions - October 29, 2018

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 05:18 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Some people have asked about the desk. It is an IKEA Ekbacken light oak laminate kitchen worktop with Alex drawers. I really like it. It was £40 for the worktop and £56 for the drawers. The worktop is 1.86m long and 63.5cm deep. It has a very durable surface and being the size it is, there is SO MUCH ROOM FOR ACTIVITIES!!!

A discussion on when to upgrade from 4790k.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 05:01 AM PDT

I have a 4790k that I have OC'd to 4.7. Now that we're starting to get up to 8c/16t and 6c/12t chips becoming mainstream. When does everyone think is, or will be, the optimal time to upgrade?

Outside of the obvious answer of "now is always a good time." This chip is still a beast in most applications. And paired with a gtx 1080, honestly, they seem like a good combo in most scenarios, with little to no bottleneck on either side.

SO, I've been thinking that I might be waiting until after AM4/maybe sometime in 2020. But; what does everyone else think?

Edit: Thank you all for the discussion. It was nice to see everyone's thoughts. I appreciate this sub reddit and the people here a lot for their knowledge and willingness to discuss/help with anything computer related. Please feel free to continue this discussion if you'd like. I will pop back in after work tonight. I would still be interested if anyone has thoughts on where they think the future of cpu's are going? Do we think core count is going to stabilize at 8c/16t for the mainstream users for the near future (because obviously, over time, we will will just continue to get more)? Or is speed going to become the big thing?

2700x vs 2600x The primary use of my PC is gaming, why spent more money on a 2700x when the gaming performance is almost similar?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 02:27 AM PDT

I can afford it, but I really don't see a huge benefit from spending more. The 2700x has more cores and threads but I'm not streaming/editing/working.

Edit: thanks for the anwers, gonna purchase a 2600x

Is there 'sweet spot' for RAM with Ryzen or is it just the higher the clock the better?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 11:16 AM PDT

I know the Ryzen chips can have a significant increase in performance with fast ram, but is there a 'sweet spot' or just the higher your ram is clocked at the better.

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes!

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Purely for gaming and watching videos/anime/movies. I have a work laptop given to me which is excellent for rendering simulations as well as day-to-day browsing. Unfortunately, it is my only device and I'd rather not game on it if I can, nor is it viable for me for modern games.

I'd also like to look into OC'ing within the lifespan of the build.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'd like to future-proof it for at least the next 3-5 years. As for specs, I am looking at 1440P, 60+ FPS and FreeSync/G-Sync compatible. I'd like to pump out as much performance as possible.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

$4000 CAD. All prices in this post are in CAD.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

Purchasing from Canada, mostly online but can search around. /r/bapcsalescanada isn't as active as I'd like it to be.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I have built a PC in the past and once for my brother, but due to an unfortunate accident, I did receive amnesia and some nerve damage so this is effectively my first build as I don't have any past recollection. Fortunately, I'm doing a lot better and have recovered to the point where I am able to keep a steady job and have saved up a lot of money which I do not spend on. I play a lot of videogames at home, using methods I've learned over the years to get around issues of not being able to use a thumb to the fullest extent, or other minor problems and am good with the peripherals I have.

I am looking into spending the money to upgrade from using my laptop and PC (GTX 660), so this will be one hell of a jump.

I also have asked around for the specifics of building it, as well as watching some videos recommended in the sidebar, and most builds appear to use thumbscrews from a response I received. This might be a issue, and I may require help from my dad or brother to build this. However, I am extremely stubborn and will attempt this without them until it reaches the point where I need assistance.

I'll go through my reasoning for the following parts. Note, I'm not looking into any RGB if possible:

    CPU: Intel - Core i7-8700K 3.7GHz 6-Core Processor ($498.75)

I have done reading and research on the i9-series, and it appears to be overpriced for some performance gain but not enough to justify the difference. It appears that the i7-8700K is still the best option for a high-end gaming desktop, unless I am mistaken. I have looked at the Ryzen 2700X as an alternative but if someone could convince me if the difference in performance is negligble and compatibility isn't important, then I might look into that or any other alternative.

CPU Cooler: Noctua - NH-D15 82.5 CFM CPU Cooler ($99.84)

I don't know too much about CPU Coolers. I have seen a lot of builds that use the NZXT Cooler, but I have no experience with watercooling builds. If someone can point me into a direction into reading material, I would appreciate it. Anyways, after some looking around, it appears that the Noctua NH-D15 is well praised and doesn't have anything to do with RGB, but again as I have no experience here, I'd like some advice on what else to look at.

    Motherboard: Gigabyte - Z390 AORUS MASTER ATX LGA1151 ($384.99)

I'd like to future-proof it, and I am looking at this motherboard in case I decide to move upto an i9 series in the future. I have looked at the Gigabyte Z370 AORUS, but once again if someone can advise me into what to look at with this build, I would appreciate it. A network card is a must, as it may come in handy from time to time.

    Memory: G.Skill - Trident Z 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 CL14 ($530.00)

This is overkill, but 32GB is a must. I have looked into memory frequency and latency, and have decided to go with 3200 and CL14, or any other B-die available. It seems to be slightly more of a premium, but useful in case I decide to swap over to a Ryzen CPU in the future. If someone can convince me to drop this and go with something else, I'd appreciate it.

    Storage: Samsung - 970 Evo 250GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive ($120.95) Samsung - 860 Evo 1TB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($244.00)

I am a data hoarder and have plenty of external HDD's. That said, as this will be a gaming-exclusive desktop, I will be running AAA games or those that require higher specs on the SSD, whereas most other games will be run from an external HDD I already have.

I went with the 970 EVO 250GB to use as the storage which will contain the OS (W10 Pro) as well as any other software, and the other 1TB 860 EVO will have the games or anything else downloaded at the time.

I am not familiar with how setups are like these days, and would appreciate any input or direction into alternatives if need be.

Video Card: EVGA - GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB FTW3 GAMING iCX Video Card ($1283.99)

I am looking for a GTX 1080 Ti, and I do not think I will be planning on an SLI-build at this time, but in the future I may consider it if prices can go down further. That said, if anyone has an alternative to the card I chose here, please suggest it and a quick reason why. I would prefer EVGA for its customer support history, if possible.

Case: EVGA - DG-87 ATX Full Tower Case ($334.99)

At first I was looking at the smaller cases, but once I found out about the thumbscrews, I thought I'd need more space to work with, especially with nerve damage in the fingers and with how large my hands are, I saw this case and fell in love. It is overkill, but I am kind of looking at this one. I don't have any plans to move it at all from my room, and the dimensions are fine as is. Temperature reading is a nice gimmick but if this is overkill and definitely not recommended, please let me know. I'll be sad to take this one off my list. :(

PSU: EVGA - SuperNOVA T2 1000W 80+ Titanium Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($285.75) (Already Purchased)

I've already purchased this. There was a sale earlier on, and at my local electronics store, there was a price match for it and it still came with the extended warranty. Is overkill, but since I only had to pay tax and not shipping, became really cheap with the alternatives with the G3, etc.

    OS: W10 Pro

    Monitor: Acer - XB271HU bmiprz 27.0" 2560x1440 165Hz Monitor ($799.99)

I have no experience in this regard, with owning any monitor over 60Hz. I have looked around and this one seems to be well regarded. If anyone can suggest an alternative if possible, let me know for sure.

Please for sure, give me recommendations or other information that will be useful for me. I appreciate all and any help or advice! I am constantly looking at /r/BuildAPCSales subreddit for deals and will buy the parts from now until Black Friday as they appear.

Need help deciding ryzen 5 2600 or Intel i5 8600k

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 08:53 PM PDT

Black Friday is coming soon and I want to build my PC. Idk which CPU should i get. It either the ryzen 5 2600 or intel i5 8600k. I'm planning to play games, coding (java, C etc,), autocad, and run android emulator(nox player, bluestaks etc.).

Edit: thanks for all the advise. I might just go with intel due to amd not supporting VM.

Does anyone build PC’s for a living?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:34 PM PDT

Building my first pc was SO FUN, and I already want to build another for no reason at all.

Just curious if who here builds PC's and then sells them.

Do you do it independently like online, eBay, etc? Or perhaps for a company?

How much do you markup approx?

Full blown career, or just as hobby/on the side?

I feel like it'd be cool to do it as a service, where people tell me what they want to use it for, how important looks and lighting are, etc and then I build one for them.

I'm sure independent people do that already, but I thought of it after my friend bought a new prebuilt ibuypower gaming rig and he told me he couldn't be bothered to build one himself and would gladly pay a nice markup to not have to.

This is all just me looking to find a way to make a little money doing something I enjoyed, but curious to hear some thoughts!

Anyone here run their top mounted radiator as intake?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 02:12 PM PDT

Just wondering what people's experience is with that. My case has 3 intakes (2 front, 1 bottom), and currently 3 exhaust (2 from the radiator (in push) and 1 rear exhaust fan. CPU temperatures are around 55-60 while gaming, and gpu temperature (open shroud 1080) are around 70, so not too bad, but I do feel like my idle temperatures could be better, and I think that my GPU temperatures used to be lower. Case is a Nano S Mini btw, but I have an sfx power supply so the graphics card has a lot of space to breath. I have mesh filters for the top, bottom and front.

Edit: I have an EVGA 240 CLC rad on a ryzen 2600x.

Anyway, since it seems it's common knowledge that warm air raises and top radiators are better as exhaust, but very little real testing that I can find about it, just wanted to see what people have observed in their own cases and why they decided to do the opposite of the common knowledge. Thanks.

So the goal with this was to try out liquid cooling and now that I'm stepping into a new job where I make more money I figured I could splurge a little on a PC. The only questions I've got before throwing money at this is cpu and video card related. I'm not up to date on these specific parts, is there a good AMD card comparable to the 1070 at this price point (or cheaper?) Also with the CPU should I get an AMD card or will it simply not matter. I don't plan to overclock or multithread or any of that fun jazz, it's for casual gaming.

    Remote system monitoring

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 05:00 AM PDT

I recently built four PCs for friends. I would like an easy to use application where I could monitor their system performance - mainly temps - from my computer or via app.

I see HWmonitor PRO advertises this. Anyone have experience using this program? Or recommend another program?

    Thanks.

What is going on with my psu?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 08:44 AM PDT

    Troubleshooting Help:

    Hey guys.

I just bought the last parts need to complete my build and tried to build today.

    The build:

    Ryzen 5 2400g

    Gigabyte DSH3 B450

    Patriot 2x4gb 3000mhz

    • Sharkoon WPM 500watt semi modular 80plus bronze *

I first tried to make the pc post (built it on top of the motherboard box). So I have the ram,cpu and cpu cooler plugged it and I connect the psu cable 24pin and 8pin and nothing happens.

After trying the paperclip test I realise I need to move the psu power cable to work because it is loose. Thankfully I had a power cable from an old monitor and replaced the one that came with the psu (they had exactly the same specifications).

After that the psu easily passed the paperclip test but still refuses to work when the 24pin and 8pin are connected (the psu fan doesn't spin).

Am I doing something wrong? Did I buy a damaged psu? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

I prefer to not return it because it will take ages to come back to me from wherever it has to go and I have to pay shipping(?). Is there any chance the shop I bought it from (a local one) will replace it themselves without having me wait?

Newegg now ships exclusively from the USA??

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 12:28 PM PDT

So it's been a while since I've been on the website and before they didn't include VAT in the price and it said that they are shipping the product from Germany. Now every product I look at ships from the US and has an additional 27% tariff on it.

I was planning on buying a gaming PC but the prices with the tariffs are ridiculous!

What the hell happened? Am I browsing the wrong site? Do they not ship from Germany anymore? If so, why isn't anyone talking about this?

First time build: Ryzen 2600X + RX 580. Am I missing something?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 04:32 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Several times.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I will use this computer for gaming and productivity (word, excel, Matlab and web surfing) in equal measure, and sometimes I'll watch videos or listen to music. I don't have plans of overclocking anything.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'm looking for 1080p 60+ FPS (if possible 90+ FPS) at max or nearly max settings, with FreeSync (G-Sync is too expensive).

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I would like to spend 1200 € (~1370 $) monitor included, but I don't mind spending a max of 1400 € if I am able to get meaningful improvements that way.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

Spain, Europe (prices are worse here than in the US, but the worst part is that it is almost impossible to find good sales).

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

I am sorry for not posting a PCPartPicker list, but many components or retailers can't be found in the Spanish site. I'll post the parts and the best prices that I've found myself with the links below.

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, 220.00 €, Amazon.es

    CPU Cooler: Wraith Spire (Stock)

MotherBoard: MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC, 129.90 €, Amazon.es

    Memory: G.Skill Trident Z 3200 MHz CL16 (F4-3200C16D-16GTZB), 148.82 €, Newegg (Spanish site)

    Storage: Samsung 860 EVO 500 Gb, 88.16 €, Amazon.es

    Video Card: Sapphire NITRO+ RX 580 8GB, 275.99 €, Amazon.es

Case: Cougar Panzer-S, 80.90 €, IN POSSESSION (I thought it was a good offer, and I like this case a lot)

PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G3, 88.03 €, Newegg (Spanish site)

    TOTAL: 1030.98 € ~1178 $

    ALTERNATIVES THAT I'M STILL CONSIDERING

CPU: i5-8400. As long as it is more expensive than the Ryzen (+12 € here in Spain), I'll stay with AMD.

MotherBoard: ASRock B450M-HDV, 72.59 €, Newegg. It's a lot cheaper, but has less ports and connectors and it doesn't have Wi-Fi nor Bluetooth (I would miss both, specially Bluetooth).

PSU: Corsair RM650x and Seasonic SSR-650FX or their Platinum variants. All depends on the price, at the moment the EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G3 is the winner.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

    I have some questions:

    • Is 650 W for the PSU too much? 550 W seems a bit tight with the power hungry AMD parts.
    • Will I miss any port if I get the Asrock Mobo? Does it have enough connectors for at least 4 case fans and the CPU cooler? I tried to look it in the datasheet but I didn't understand it.
    • Are the better connectivity and better cooling system of the MSI Mobo worth the extra 57 €?
    • My RAM is not in the QVL list, will I have any problem?

And here is a bit of my thought process in choosing the parts:

    • As I don't intend overclocking anything, 2600X and RX 580 limited overclocking capabilities aren't an issue.
    • I've tried to look for the cheapest dual rank RAM of a well-known brand in order to get the best performance with just enabling XMP and not overclocking.
    • Maybe I buy extra storage down the road, but I don't need it right now.
    • I will be looking at offers for around 1 month (until black friday ends).
    • I plan on buying an IPS or VA 1080p monitor. In fact I'd like to get LG 34UC79G-B, but I need good sales on the other components in order to afford that. Other options that I'm considering are the AOC AG272FCX, the AOC C27G1 and the MSI Optix MAG271C.

Any tip or answer to my questions is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for all your help and all the posts that I have been reading this last month in this subreddit.

Edit: I'm now considering Ryzen 5 2600 too because many of you told me that, taking into account the much lower price, it is totally worth it.

First Time Building a Gaming PC, Advice Needed.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 04:07 PM PDT

I'm planning on building a gaming pc for the first time, and through my very limited knowledge of pc parts I've managed to come up with a build. I would love some suggestions on how I could optimize this build and still stay around the maximum price point of $1200 if possible.

Initially I plan on playing in 1080p and I want to be able to play new/future AAA titles on relativley high settings with 60+ FPS. Will this build be sufficient?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have no idea what I'm doing. All these big names with letters and numbers and I have no idea what they mean. I know what the parts do but I don't know what parts to get. I would like something under $1000.

Is it worthwhile to upgrade a 6600k yet?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 12:18 PM PDT

Alright so I've been considering upgrading my cpu for a while now but I'm kind of out of the loop on hardware atm due to uni and what not.

I am currently sitting on a 6600k and a gtx 1080 (which I'm not looking to upgrade and the new series is looking very underwhelming) and am simply wondering if it'd be worth it to upgrade it yet? I've often thought about trying an i7 and see if I notice a difference since I don't only play games and then turn it back off.

So tl;dr of what I am wondering: Do you think upgrading my 6600k would be a good/bad idea? Why/why not?

If the answer is yes, which i7 should I be looking into? I was eyeing the new 9000 something but think I read something about them running very hot?

    Thank you.

Edit: just going to add that I play at 1440p if that matters.
