Thanks to reddit, I built my first PC! It works, but I have some bugs. Please help!

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 07:37 PM PDT

So I built it, and then I followed this post almost to a t.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/7mn388/so_you_finished_building_your_pc_now_what/

The one thing I didn't do initially was update BIOS...which I ended up doing earlier today. I also realized I didn't install my Ryzen cpu drive until today, which I did and neither of these things seemed to of helped my issues..

So windows 10 is installed, works great. I've been playing a few steam games which are just absolutely amazing coming from console. Everything is working amazing - except for a weird boot.

    Issues:

-(1)- Occasionally disconnects from wired ethernet, especially if I leave to go do something for a few hours and come back. I've updated every driver I can find for the router and downloaded the netgear software, etc. Just seems to randomly disconnect. If I shut down and reboot, it's connected. Spent a lot of time googling, adjusting settings, etc.

-(2) When I boot, it will go to the "ASROCK" screen and just get stuck / frozen.

My options are "Press F1 or DEL to run UEFI", "Press F6 for Instant Flash", "Press F11 for Boot Menu", "Press Tab to Switch Screen". However, I cannot make any selections, it's just frozen.

So I power down, unplug, hold the power button down to discharge capacitors (found this on google) and it boots completely normal to windows 10 with no issues (other than occ. disconnect from ethernet). The ASROCK screen will flash back on for a second before windows boot (like intended) and presumably these selections are available and not frozen because it seems to be a "normal" boot.

I wasn't that concerned until I noticed it was pretty much every time and the reboot also fixed the ethernet. which makes me think mobo. No other bugs I can tell and I've been doing a good deal with it.

I think these will be important?

    from system information:

    Bios Version/Date: American Megatrends Inc. P1.20, 6/19/18

    Bios Mode: Legacy

    Concerns

    - I think I've installed every driver I can find, I just don't know what else to do. Is the MoBo bad?

Here it is, in all it's glory: :)

    Here is my build:

Paying for 120mbps but only getting ~12mbps download

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 10:15 AM PDT

I recently got 120mbps internet, the tech guy came and set it up and on my computer that he wired to my router is getting 120mbps, but everything else in the house that's connected to the wifi is only getting 10-12 Mbps, the thing is I only got this wifi for the two ps4's in the house that are too far away to be wired, and we are still getting the measly 10-12 Mbps like before. Any idea why?

for those asking if I'm misreading, I am not Wired Connection vs Wireless Connection

Need quick help with batch-renaming files in Windows.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 12:11 AM PDT

    I re-named 278 images using F2 in Windows (a useful shortcut).

I used the F2 shortcut and used the name "viz" (because they are visualizations).

This means that the last image should be called "viz (278)."

However, the last file is called "viz (190)," which means that there are 88 duplicates.

I think that the duplicates have something to do with the different formats: if I look at all four different "viz (1)" files then I notice that they all have a different format.

How can I fix this problem?

Not enough storage space on my laptop...bought an external hard drive and having issues.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 12:18 AM PDT

So basically I am taking a QuickBooks class and I needed to install Quickbooks onto my laptop. However in order to do so I had to free up a lot of space because my laptop sucks. I deleted Microsoft Office because I couldn't figure out anything else to delete and was frustrated.

Well it turns out I need Microsoft Excel to complete my assignments in this class as well. So I broke down and bought an external hard drive with 1 terabyte of storage space. I plugged it into my laptop and it pops up when I look at my storage. I changed my settings to save all new data to the external hard drive, but when I try to redownload Microsoft Office my computer still says I need to free up disk space. Can anyone help me figure out what to do next?

Need help cloning 1TB HDD to 500GB SSD drive

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 12:14 AM PDT

I recently bought WD 500gb SSD drive and am looking to replace my old 1TB HDD completely. I have tried using both Macrium and WD Acronis to clone my HDD but I keep getting an error message about the bytes/sector difference between the two drives.

I am wondering if it is even possible...

Also, update: Windows does not see my drive anymore. I think I may have deleted the storage option in Windows 10 settings.

    Thanks!!!

Usb3 pen drive not working properly with usb3 ports

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 12:09 AM PDT

Hi, I have this Patriot Supersonic Magnum 64 gb usb3 pen drive that recently started having issues when plugging it in a usb3 port. The problem is the same no matter the computer. So I plug it and in my computer I will see "Removable Disk (D:)", if I click on it, it says to insert a disk. In disk management it says "no media". After 3-4 times I plug it and unplug it, it then works. Once it is recognized it works properly. I always work with usb2. Is it time for a new drive?

    CRT TV Strange Issue

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 11:26 AM PDT

I recenly purchased a 1995 Toshiba Theaterview CRT TV (the kind with a mirror in the back and three (blue, green, red) CRT tubes pointing at the mirror. The screen worked perfectly when I first got it, but the sound was not working. I partially disassembled the back of the screen and repaired the sound (easy fix, the switch was set to external instead of internal speakers, but was hidden by the cover). However, since reassembling it, the image has been extremely bad and the television itself has been making a strange popping sound that seems to be coming from the PSU board (?), which I did not touch while disassembling it. Also, when I turn it on, the blue tube lights up, then the green one starts flashing, and the red one comes on very intermitantly. I have included videos, and any help would be much much appreciated, I'm pulling my hair out as to how this could have happened!

    Videos:

    Here's the TV running: https://1drv.ms/v/s!Aj3u2AXYEDNjofNA6j8WYCo1CKtX4w

Here's a video of the tubes when the TV is turned on: https://1drv.ms/v/s!Aj3u2AXYEDNjofNFZddxRMMo8OlN5w

Update (copied from a comment below):

the model number is TP55E50, I found a manual here that looks promising.

I tried switching the speakers back to 'external' as well as removing the modular board with the sound connectors and switch on it, no dice yet unforunately. If it makes a difference the sound over the speakers is unaffected and is still clear no matter the condition of the lamps.

Also......while I was trying your suggestions the strangest thing happened. I have a video I'll attach to this comment. I turned on the tv and plugged in a wii to test the sound. The bulbs started clicking on and off (as I've come to expect), and as soon as I changed the input to the wii it got much worse, just a super constant clicking on and off which continued for about 20 seconds.....and then it...stopped. The picture is stabalized and the sound is working. So what in the world is going on here? PSU going maybe??

Video of the strangest thing ever

Update 2: I still haven't turned off the tv, but did refocus it to find that although I am now able to see the screen, there are constant lines dancing up and down it (see attached video below). Any suggestions on what might be causing that?

Please help a desperate idiot. My BRAND NEW (bought today) HP laptop is unusable. It is unfathomably slow. I haven't even installed anything or done anything besides the basic setup.

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 06:29 PM PDT

So I had a cheap HP Laptop for the last 3 years that worked brilliantly and then my brother accidentally ran it over with his car (long story tl;dr my fault). It did everything I need, which is just the bare bone basics of internet browsing, email, Netflix, spotify and that's basically it. Nothing crazy at all.

So today I went to Best Buy and got an hp laptop with windows 10 that is super similar, if not the same as my old one.

    Problem:

I did the initial setup (date, time, naming my account, etc) and the laptop booted up fine. But as soon as I logged in, everything is incredibly slow. Ive rebooted several times and its always the same. The CPU usage is always between 87% and %100, disk usage is basically the same.

I cannot open anything that doesn't freeze up the laptop and take 2 minutes to load. Whenever I type, the letters are lagging 7-8 letters behind.

The programs that take up the most CPU are :

    Synaptic Touchpad 64-bit

    The Task Manager itself

    System Interrupts

    System

    Microsoft Windows malicous software removal

    Desktop window ma

This has been incredible frustrating for me, as I am an old fart who usually can figure these things out, but I am by no means computer - savvy. Reddit gold or a small charity donation if anyone can help me.

Adaptive Brightness refuses to turn off

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 11:45 PM PDT

I'm having an issue with Adaptive Brightness. Changing between different windows changes the brightness of the screen (Most apparent in Matlab switching to Word).

This only happens on one "monitor" which is an LG TV (works fine on two Dell monitors), however, I've checked through the TV settings and nothing could be causing this. In addition to this, I've tried a myriad of online solutions, and none of them work.

    System Specs:
    Windows 10 Pro
    Intel 8700k
    Asus GTX 1080 Ti
    MSI motherboard of some sort

    Things I've tried:

    -Adjusting display power settings
-No way to adjust Intel display settings because I'm using an Nvidia graphics card, so Intel drivers aren't even installed
    -Modifying the registry
-All sorts of Nvidia control panel settings
    -Updating drivers, updating Windows

Nothing so far works. Is there any way I can disable this shit? So fucking annoying

    SSD compatibility

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 01:34 AM PDT

    Hello.
I recently bought an M2 SSD for my laptop, and it has 3 "pins" that connect to the slot, my slot has only 2 "pins" to connect to, but the ssd showed up in disk management. Im wondering if I will have any issues in the future?

My ssd, which looks like this:

Sony Android TV HDMI Ports dying?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 12:58 AM PDT

I have this Sony Andoird smart TV (X830C) out of warranty and around 6 months ago we had a lightning strike which blew HDMI 1. HDMI 1 just appears as 'No Signal' regardless of what I insert into it (PS4, SET TOP BOX, BLURAY PLAYER). Seeing as the TV has 4 HDMI ports I just used the the other 3.

Now today my set top box wasn't getting a signal in HDMI 2 so after messing around with the ports I noticed that it works with HDMI 3 and 4. However, HDMI 2 isn't dead as the BluRay player works on port 2. So I'm basically asking two things.

1- At this rate are all the ports eventually going to just die on me?

    2- Is it worth repairing?

    GTX 1080ti and i5 7600k issues.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 12:50 AM PDT

    Hi all,

How can I improve my fps? Do I just need to buy a better CPU?

I've recently upgraded my PC to a 1080ti and i5 7600k, and it seems that I'm getting on par, and sub par performance compared to my old parts, gtx 1060 6gb and i5 6400.

EG, Overwatch is at 100fps, wheras when it was on the 1060 it had around 120-150fps.

    - Final Fantasy 15, has >60fps, which as the same as my 1060.

I'm pretty new to PC computer things. Any help would be greatly appreciated, If you require more info just let me know.

(Also my CPU and RAM max out during any game, and 1.8/8gb of my ram is being reserved for Hardware use.)

I have attached a URL of my dxdiag.txt file.

Monitor screen stays completely dark when it is plugged into the motherboard (Asus Z170-A)

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 09:47 PM PDT

I removed my graphics card from my PC and now I want the graphics to be handled by the processor (Intel Core i7).

I think that all I have to do is change a setting in the BIOS, but since I can't see anything, I can't access the BIOS in the first place.

If needed, I could re-install the graphics card and access the BIOS that way as everything works well when the monitor is plugged into the graphics card, but I was wondering if this is really the only way?

    Thanks!

Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 11:50 PM PDT

I've been getting this issue a lot while playing games. My screen will turn black for about 5 seconds and when it comes back on it says "display driver has stopped responding and has recovered" at the bottom. It usually crashes whatever game I'm playing as well and says "fatal error". I have an NVIDIA GeForce 740, not the best for gaming but it works well with the games I play. Yesterday I downloaded DDU and uninstalled the graphics card card and reinstalled it with the latest driver but I still got the same issue while playing games. I honestly have no idea how to figure out what's going on therefore I don't know what needs to be replaced if anything at all. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I can provide anything else if needed

Sudden Freezing with No Clear Cause

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 11:19 PM PDT

I don't do anything crazy with my pc. Usually just browsing Reddit and playing League of Legends. About once a day, at random, my computer will freeze hard in the middle of whatever I'm doing.

I've tried paying very close attention to what I'm doing immediately before it freezes, and can't come up with anything.

No blue screens or blackouts. Just a freeze of everything other than Windows. My only option when it happens is to restart.

Running Windows 7 Home Premium on

    -AMD FX8350

    -8GB DDR3 GSkill RAM

    -ASUS 970 Pro Gaming Motherboard

    -Kingston 120GB SSD

    -EVGA Geforce GTX 750

You can click here to see an imgur post I just uploaded with screenshots of Event Viewer error codes.

Please let me know if there's any more information I can offer. I'm a little in over my head. Thanks.
